Thank you Ryan for making a specific video about this. When I first heard you mention this in a different video a few years ago, it got me thinking. Then I started doing a lot of research on the various boost setups. You are dead nuts on point with this. There's a lot of youngsters that think a blower is just a different style turbo, and more boost means more power. WRONG lol. Love this video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm going to share it in hopes that some one else will listen to what you're saying, and then maybe start doing a little more research before going crazy buying go fast parts lol.
Ryan is right about this especially if you are still on stock internals for either the ecotec or 3800. Myself I'm going to be maximizing the setup im going with which is a 3.1 pulley on my le5 2.4 G5 gt sedan. I have ported stage 2 blower, ls4 tb, 3 inch intake, dual pass, option b, mid length 1.75 header, catless downpipe and 2.5 zzp exhaust.
Smokey took a 2.5L( Iron Duke) stock motor and used a supercharger on it with a turbocharger also. With a tweak on the HEI and fuel curve, he pulled 250HP from a bone stock worn-out engine. Just shows that even with a stock non supercharger cam you can make decent power if you don't try going overboard on the boost.
Is the 3.8” pulley already in the best efficiency range for a stock motor? I want to focus on suspension for now and just have an intake setup and maybe some exhaust work in the future but I want to know what pulley size would work for me
That Eaton M90 needs to just be replaced by a larger twinscrew supercharger instead of decreasing the pully size. The M90 on those 3800's is so, so underpowered. If you want to make real power with a positive displacement supercharger, you need to buy a twinscrew charger that's about twice the size or bigger. It's gonna cost money, obviously, but it's worth it if you are willin to spend.
Well, you're not going to find one that bolts directly onto the 3800. But the larger 3.0L + size displacement superchargers from Whipple or Kenne Bell or the like can be "retrofitted" with custom parts to work with it... And like I said, a lot of money is going to need to be spent to make it work.
There are a few ways! So 1) you can look at your IAT1 and 2 to see. 2) you can remove the pump, put power and water to it and see if it moves water. or 3) take the cap off of the intercooler system fill neck and see if water is flowing through. This is the easiest method. :)
These are MAF based cars. The computer has no idea what pulley size is on the blower. It could be two inches, could be five, the MAF measures the incoming air and makes the necessary changes. Absolutely no need to re-tune for a pulley size change once you've already been tuned.

I’m just gonna say it. If someone calls and wants a stage 3 kit with a 2.7 pulley don’t tell them no or ask “what mods do you already have”You don’t know they’re Motorsports background or mechanical abilities/performance knowledge. I like ZZP parts but when I personally called and got asked what mods I had and was told to order a stage 3 kit with a 2.8 pulley I was pissed off 😤 so I did buy it and I then immediately ordered an OTTP 2.7 pulley and hub. Not every customer you have is a dumbass.
You're exactly right. Not every customer is a dumbass. And we DONT know every person's background. More often than not, being conservative and inquisitive on our end saves some poor inexperienced kids engine.
@@GTPonYOU1 I’m 29 years old and have built high performance diesels for 8 years most in the 400-700hp range and even up to the 900-1200hp range used the best parts money can buy from all over the country. You too bro 😂😂😂😂. This was me until I noticed they do way better with larger pulleys and the motor built better.

At first I heard 300 guys; then I started the video over. Yep still troubleshooting the KR's. Now I got a baseline of 6-8lbs of boost.

Thank you this helped me a lot better understand superchargers. And how they work
Need supporting mods. Intake, exhaust, (inter)cooling, fuel supply and tuning.
2.55" break input shafts :D just sayin'
You rock guys
So what I'm hearing is that I should drop straight to a 2.8 stock for those high boost# to impress my friends?
Exactly

This makes so much sense
So for a stock 2006 GT supercharged that's healthy what pulley size could i go ?
Running 3.4 on xp cam and intercooled setup boost doesn't seem to kick up hard till top rpm but I'm not upset.. It's fast lol
The CTS-V2 guys need to see this video. Lol. My GTP was on a 3.4 and she scooted
My rivi is on the 3.4 and it woke it up 4 sure
Isn't 16-17psi on an lsj the maximum you could go, not the most efficient?
PCM can't properly compensate fueling past 17psi. It's the upper end of the efficiency range, but again like Ryan said more psi is not always better.
@@gbrunner24 looking at the efficiency curves of the gen5 m62, even the 15 psi on a 2.9" I'm running isn't anywhere near peak blower efficiency

Hey Ryan at ZZP,
I have an 07 cobalt how would I know if the balt's intercooler pump is dead?
There are a few ways! So 1) you can look at your IAT1 and 2 to see. 2) you can remove the pump, put power and water to it and see if it moves water. or 3) take the cap off of the intercooler system fill neck and see if water is flowing through. This is the easiest method. :)
I give you a nine inch pulley!!!
Get to ride every girl in town!!!
Pretty sure you need a tune for a smaller pulley need to compensate air flow with fuel.

But you sell the tune for it why sell one if you yourself can't make it work for you
I’m running a 2.8 and it makes 12 pounds of boost Buick Regal gs just I’m tryna make a moon landing
So size does matter? 😅
Without a pulley change, you can actually lose boost by going with an exhaust that is to free flowing.
