Thanks so much, David, for creating these incredibly informative videos. I ended up watching the entire series over the weekend! Big congratulations on your new Flicka - it’s definitely going to make winter cruising possible for you. I’m really impressed with all the updates you’ve made to Tramontana over the years, and the thought process behind each modification. If you ever consider selling her, then please keep me in mind. I started sailing in San Francisco, trained at Club Nautique, and was fortunate to charter sailboats around the world before the kids came along. Now that they’re at the right age, I’d love to introduce them to sailing, and I think an M17 would be perfect for us. Please keep the Flicka videos coming - it’s such a great, sturdy little cruiser, and I’m excited to see what you do with it and where it takes you!
Hi Paul, thank you for watching all my videos and writing the great comment. Montgomery 17 sailboats are very capable and safe boats that would be perfect for your family to learn sailing on. I will eventually sell Tramontana but I need to repair the keel.
Good morning Olive, it’s been fun setting Tramontana up and making her into the ultimate cruising machine! Thanks for continuing to watch and comment on my channel. David
lovely ,all neat and tidy very well equipped no worries for any any situations thats what makes it fun and you can set sail with confidence, this has to be one of the best montgomery 17 out there
Hi, surely there’s someone there. You’re right about setting sail with confidence. Tramontana has keep me safe in all kinds of conditions. Thanks for watching y channel.
Phenomenal Dave! I really appreciate this, and admire the ingenuity. It looks like it is beneficial to have a little artistic creativity and bit of an engineers mind. I have the older M17 and the aft section of the cockpit bench (seat located under the tiller) is enclosed-there is no place to store the gas tank. So I’m trying to envision the best way to access this area to store a 3-6 gallon tank.. Thank you also for explaining the PVC storage-I had wondered, and it is a great place to store combustible material.
Good morning Mel, it’s been fun coming up with ideas to make Tramontana into a comfortable pocket cruiser that meets my needs. Enjoy coming up with ideas that will meet your needs. Thanks for watching and commenting on my channel, David
Thank you David for sharing. Several great ideas I hope to copy some this year and the years to come. Hope to be sailing this year, my refurb is finally progressing to the point I hope to splash soon. Hull 333
Hi TJ, thanks for watching my video. Enjoy working on and making modifications to 333. They are fantastic pocket cruisers that are very capable on the water. Enjoy the day you make the big splash!
Hi Chris, it’s been fun modifying Tramontana and turning her into a pocket cruiser that meets my needs. There is a change in the future, I bought a Pacific Seacraft Flicka. I decided that a little more comfort would be nice on my longer journeys. I have mixed feelings about getting rid of Tramontana I need to make sure I like the Flicka. Tramontana is a capable little pocket cruiser that has keep me safe for several thousand miles.
@@davidyoung5321 that's exciting news David. The Flicka looks like a very capable boat. If it wasn't for the whole of the north and south Pacific I would make you an offer for Tramontana 🤠 Good luck with the changes. Looking forward to seeing how it all goes.
I just came across the channel last week and have really enjoyed watching your voyages. As a fellow Bainbridge pocket yachter, welcome to the island. I'm berthed in Eagle Harbor, see you on the water!
Mod's look great David! I am waiting for it to warm up to make hopefully the last repair to make my cabin water tight. Every time I think about selling Grace again I watch one of your videos and say well maybe not. I like a lot of your mod's and would love to add the cabin doors, I have always admired those on Larry's boat.
Hi Jim, I hope you found the magic ticket that will repair Grace. I bought a Pacific Seacraft Flicka and have mixed feelings about sell Tramontana. For now I’m hanging onto her while I try out the Flicka. It is nice having more comfort and being able to cruise in the winter months.
I@@davidyoung5321 I have always had a thing for the Flicka's too. Well with you and Randy going from M17 to Flicka, maybe I will have to keep my eyes open for one. I guess that does not match my downsizing to the Scamp and Norseboat but you can't argue with a comfortable cabin especially sailing up in your area. Looking forward to some videos from the new boat. Just got a GoPro myself and starting to play with it. Way behind the curve on editing but I should get that figured out before long.
Great little video in upgrades. I know your Monty felt comfy n looked uncluttered when I chatted with you down at Swanstown 2023 .. I’ve got a long ways to go upgrade wise on my 1978 Monty but if my health stays good n healthy I’ll start upgrade stuff. Added bigger battery n hoping for solar too, bought new anchoring ground tackle n ropes too, as well as Nav plotter with depth sounder. I’ll see how cruise works out in 2024 Salish 100 n go from there. Maybe see ya out on the water, Nick ( on Vera Mae ) name of boat after my late Sweetheart’s passing. Cheers 🥂
Hi Nick, I love the name of your new sailboat. It’s a lot of fun modifying a sailboat to fit your needs. Sounds like you have a good start making her yours. Enjoy the Salish 100 this year. Hopefully we can rendezvous sometime this summer, David

Hello again David. Thanks so much for sharing the detail of all of your upgrades. Really great work! Question: You mentioned that you use your vang as a preventer. To what do you attach the vang to on your boat? Looking to rig one on my boat as well. Have used a mid-ship cheat but not the best angle. Thinking of running a line up to one of the bow cleats. Was happy to see you post again and looking forward to following your next adventure. All the best! Bob
Hi Bob, thanks for following my channel and taking the time to comment. My Stanchions have support braces on each side. They are backed with a solid metal backing plates making them very strong and they are located towards the bow giving them a great angle for the preventer. I just unsnap the lower shackle and hook it to my stanchions base. Have you thought about placing a stainless steel pad eye, in a good location, to hook your vang to. Thanks again, David
@@davidyoung5321 Hi again David. Thanks for the quick reply and my apologies for hitting back so late. I have a Catalina 320 so my vang is what I would consider permanently attached (unless requiring service of course). I have mid-ship cleats but they are on top of my cabin top which I've used. I wish they were mounted more outboard to create a better angle back to the boom. Given my increase loads, I'm reluctant to put that kind of pressure on my stanchions. I think my best play would be to add two additional cleats just forward of mid-ship as far outboard as I can get to below to properly secure. Thank you again and looking forward to the season and more of your content. Bob
I noticed you have a Saturn dinghy. Their website has a picture of you towing the SD260. How do you like it? Did you look at other options such as the West Marine version of that size. Thanks Mike
Hi Mike, I looked at West Marine but they didn’t offer a dinghy 7’ 2” in length and that was only 58 lbs. I wanted a boat small enough to blow up in my cockpit, the Saturn worked perfectly. Happy that I bought it before they stopped making the SD260. David
Hi Amedaius, I’m definitely not a minamulist. Tramontana was packed for cruising several weeks with safety, comfort and tasty meals on board. Thanks for watching and commenting on my channel.
