Honestly this was so much fun to make! When I first watched this moment I fangirled so much! They are literally the perfect definition of a slow burn and honestly with one of the most satisfying first kiss (technically) moments I've seen in a while.
This is also one of my first real animatics for a semi-long scene like this, so It was definitely a new challenge for me, and I am fully aware there are issues with it, but I am really happy with the end result and honestly just want to make more now.

One of the best things about Critical Role Campaign 2 is how we get to see Travis fall in love with his wife all over again. The romances in the last game were fun and all, but this is pure magic.
I think part of the reason why this is so good is that we got to see it develop. Sure, the same thing happened in Campaign 1, but we never go to see the characters at the start, so we missed out on a lot of development of their relationships. With Fjord and Jester, we saw them go from childishly flirting with each other to deeply caring about each other, and not being afraid to show it. We've seen every subtle development to their relationship (Jester complimenting Fjord as she knows he's self-conscious about himself, and Fjord throwing away his pride a lot to act goofy and make her laugh) and it makes the relationship a lot more real, and makes this moment a lot more satisfying.

Love the animation, but watching Laura's face during this exchange was just incredible. She'd been pushing from the start to develop something between Jester and Fjord, but Travis had gone on record a few times declaring that he hated roleplaying romance. Grog makes a lot of sense in that light. He wasn't oblivious to Laura's plans, he just wanted to avoid it. His growth in finally allowing Fjord to acknowledge feelings toward Jesterlooked like a total wave of relief on her face. And I'm pretty sure Travis very nearly changed colors right before he decided to do that.
Also, Fjord gets a hat trick.

And perhaps go even further still, not being restrained by mere atmosphere, sailing into the stars, and seeing the universe.
This is the true origin of a ship. To yearn for a new shore, no matter where it may be, no matter the hardships it must undertake to get there. This is what a ship means. This is the reason for the existence of ships. To take those upon them to a new place. Or even to see new sights on a journey they traveled before.
I am sure The Traveler appreciates ships too, given their nature and name. Traveling is literally in their name. Its about the sights and sounds and friends you meet, on the way to your unexplored path.
A ship is not a dream. A ship is a hope to seeing a new shore to lay anchor at, to disembark and find a new home, a new treasure, a new life.
When the ship sets sails, it is only the beginning. Whether it be by sails, turbines, plasma thrusters, or gravitic warp engines. Departing the port is a commitment, and the start. It is the destination, possibly even full of unknowns, which really holds the heart of the vessel.
And thus, a ship will set sail. And experience the seas it may traverse, whether of water, air, hyperspace, or transplanar magical shifting. This is what a ship is.

Nothing against any other scenes or actors from CR, but this is the most powerfully romantic thing that the show has ever done. I know Travis was extremely reluctant to do any romance on the show, but he absolutely NAILED it. The fact that he got to share this moment with his wife, too, made it *extra* meaningful.
Its a great scene. we also get to watch as a married couple gets to roleplay the starting of a relationship.
I mean look at what there is to compare in this campaign. Beau and Yasha? My god that is just cringy at the best of times. There is just nothing about that comes off as romantic at all. Veth and Yeza, I mean that is played up to much as a joke to take seriously and really Veth should have been long since retired by this point as there is really no reason for her to be with the group at this point.
Back in season 1. Scanlan and Pike had a lot of.....creepy vibes to be honest. Vex and Percy was very interesting but a bit hammy at times but sweet none the less. Vax and Keyleth, ya didn't care for that. Vax and Gilmore, that was pretty good and it ended in such a bittersweet way that gave it a real touch that made it stand out from all the rest.

@@dseray9494 Beauyasha is certainly much more awkward, sort of by design. The early stages of their knowing one another, Beau was very lustfully attracted to Yasha, unfortunately unaware of the fact that Yasha was mourning the loss of her wife. Time and distance (caused by Yasha being away from the party) has afforded her the chance to be more genuine in her attraction, but it still comes across as awkward because neither of them are all that suave; Beau usually relies on her attractiveness and blunt nature to 'get things done' as it were, and Yasha has a low opinion of herself so she'd be very hard pressed to make the first move. Notice that neither made any moves until someone in the party they trusted were like 'Hey so they are MEGA into you just fyi'
@@kinghoenn3478 the beau yasha combo feels super forced, to have a gay couple for diversity instead of naturally occurring. I could picture a story of one of them being straight and something dramatic happen to the party that brings out a more romantic sense to a friendship and having it develop from there. Instead beau was ho-ing it up left and right and just happened to get tasha in her crosshairs. They haven't had any meaningful interactions imo.
Lets be honest. Laura was gonna win in the end. Everyone knew Travis would eventually give in to her. Because he loves his wife and Jester is adorable.
This not suppose to be real life you know, not matter if they are together or not.

Honestly the part that makes it for me is the joking immediately before the kiss.
You know Laura threw that cheekbones comment in there to give Travis a sort of lifeline, room to breathe and release tension before taking the proverbial plunge, and also possibly as a way 'out' if he needed it.
I totally read it as Laura trying to ease the tension with comedy because that is what she did in the previous session when things got a little real for Fjord. Give Travis "No romance in my dnd" Willingham a way out of the situation if he needed to.

I won't lie, I was devastated. 😂 That said, it had been a long time coming, and I certainly don't begrudge the Fjorester shippers getting their fairy tale ending. Part of shipping Widojest is the angst of knowing - deep down - it was never gonna happen.

I loved so much, how this was just a natural progression of their characters. They have always cared for each other deeply. There was no “roll to seduce” this was just the culmination of these two characters who loved each other.
Roll to seduce? So you mean roll to see if you can rape the other character without the player's consent?
@@grins9882 Hunter Duncan already said it was a good thing that there was no "roll to seduce", and IMHO that should not be a thing, although there are gamer groups who treat it as if it were a thing and the horny bard who seduces every NPC of his preferred gender is a running gag for some. D&D has no "seduction" skill, it's persuasion/diplomacy and even a high result on such a social role should never be treated as if it was mind control, it just means that that the character is very persuasive and the target character regards it as compelling and will react favorably to it within the boundries of what their character would possibly do. The character doesn't get brainwashed or lose his mind in the process. So if the target character has a reason not to engage with the seducing character in a romantic/sexual way despite finding them very charming, likeable and attractive, they are entirely free to decline such an offer no matter how high the roll was.
Critical Role rarely used social skill rolls when interacting with fellow PCs at all, except for circumstances in which a character already is in a state of losing control (like rolling to calm a character down who panicked), which IMHO is generally the preferable way to handle inter-character roleplay, not only in regard to romance

You should watch it. Their relationship goes through so many stages to get to this point. But the one thing that carries through all the awkward flirtation and a little heartache... Is that Fjord trusts Jester with everything.
The show is chock full of heart to hearts between the two of them that really just makes this moment all the sweeter.

I love how Fjord talks about "going back to Nicodranas" and not Port Damalis. Even before fully confessing, he was already implying he wants to go back to where Jester's from/go back with her.

Laura was of course, adorable, but Travis is an inspiration to me personally. Back in the early nighties, I was in 8th grade and had my first "real" girlfriend. Went on my first "real date". Sometime during the relationship, I remember me and her alone and I asked if I could kiss her. She said yes. and so we did. It was about as awkward as you could imagine, but it meant something to me. The next day I found out she told her friend I asked her for permission and a few others had found out. They didn't outright laugh at me for asking, but you could see it in their eyes and hear it in their comments. They thought I was a joke and scared, or that I wasn't very romantic. That moment forever changed how I acted in relationships. Only in my age and with the grace of my wife have I been able to become a better person. The days are quickly approaching when I will need to teach my own sons about how to treat whoever they choose to date. I am definitely going to point out that there is nothing weak, or unromantic about asking for consent. Respect is one of the most romantic things that can be given to another person. Thank you Travis.

Yeah, it might be a bit less romantic than just leaning in and kissing someone like we see in the movies...but real life isn't like the movies.
I bet those girls (that were still kids as well I might add) were expecting that from you. They might have seen you as a joke back then but I bet, looking back, they realise how much of a gentleman you were and potentially even feel bad for making fun of you.
One of the biggest fears I have. Is being seen as one of those creeps that just expect a girl to want to do something with me...to the point I probably have annoyed my partners by constantly asking "Are you sure?!" Doing intimate moments...but fuck it...I rather be seen as a bit of a lame moron than a fucking rapist so ya know....
Personally, I think asking someone "may I kiss you" is actually incredibly romantic.
@@raychances6251 yeah, I mean, this was one of the most romantic moments I've ever seen anywhere. Those moments in the movies where they just do it just always seemed abrupt and forced. This is actually romantic.
All I take from this story is that you were a nice kid who had a good set of manners.
I can't imagine the intense pressure Travis was under showing of his emotions so openly while in roleplay. You can feel the difficulty in initiating the romance, but he pulled it off masterfully.
it's always fun to see different artists' interpretations of the CR characters. This one was really good. I like how you made jester's appearance and attire appear more refined and mature as it reinforces the change in her life as well as her physical change after the statue incident. Well done!

It’s very heartwarming to see fjord express his feelings to jester when she was super concerned about the city and gave her some solace when she was scared. This was a sweet moment and I finally got to that point, and while I am a supportive shipper of fjord and jester I am such a die hard shipper of Travis and Laura!

Seeing this makes me more scared for the Mighty Nein. It's so beautiful and I'm still floored that my ship became canon, and you nailed the beauty of this moment! The fear of what they're going to have to face, the small moments of them joking around with each other. This brought tears into my eyes.

The animation is so well done and I love that you didn't cut the scene short at the kiss. Their silly dialogue afterwards is so important to the scene!

The love scene was great, but what really gets me is the way the most chaotic and random of personalities among the M9 is also the most steadfast and firm when it really matters. Fjord is great, but if Jester would have agreed with him, I am not so sure he would walk back from that choice. I am also not so sure the rest of the group would remain certain - especially once they have that big double-uber-fight-off confrontation - and not start leaning to agree with a Fjord and Jester who decided to leave.
It really is amazing how Laura weaves that balance of chaos while still having such a firm foundation which threatens 'lawfulness', tempts the realms of 'neutrality', but really holds true to 'chaotic' with a manifestation of principled ethics so strong as to steer even a paladin before he has a chance to drift wayward.
the thing I love so much is the "can I kiss you?" There are so very few examples of concent in media. It is nice that this beautiful one is out there in the world. Thank you and the animation complements the moment perfectly.

To be fair, most kisses tend to be the result of passion or affection overwhelming the characters who are attracted to each other.
(A good animation example would be in The Dragon Prince.) Having them take a second to ask could kill the atmosphere narrative wise, or be very sweet depending on the set up like here.
Few examples of consent in media? What? Where? Unless you mean few examples of people audibly consenting to each other, which makes sense since most romances don't require it as the two people are "clearly" in love with each other and both know it.

I still don't understand that. I think Jester had a bigger chance of getting together romantically with almost anyone else in the M9 than with Caleb.
Two people who fall in love because of mutual respect and care for one another built on healthy boundaries and communication... that's what Fjord and Jester have. Sure it lacks the "passion" we see in movies and tv shows... but movies and tv shows often portray dysfunction as passion.
Caleb still needs a lot of healing himself and a lot of widowjest (I was someone who flip-flopped between widowjest and Fjorester so I can attest to this) have this idea that somehow Jester's personality will"fix/heal" Caleb. The thing is that in healthy relationships it shouldn't be on one person to "heal/fix" the other person. Caleb needs to move forward on his own with the help of his friends supporting him in his journey.

The first time I saw this scene, I grinned and giggled along with the rest of the cast. Yours had me smiling and sighing. You have done a fantastic job of capturing the sweet romance of this moment.

THIS IS SO GOOD!!!! i have been praying for an animatic of this moment for so long bc we only heard the kiss roleplayed out, we didn't actually see it, yknow? and your music choice is such a lovely frame for such a lovely scene. also, you did a fantastic job with the audio editing!!!!! cutting out all the background noise and just focusing on the two of them was so sweet. and honestly the way the music swells at the kiss just made MY heart swell. this was glorious and beautiful, thank you for making it.

Excellent foley/sound design. The steps are easy enough, but that soft fabric swish is perfect, and then the kiss at the end.... You even grabbed what I strongly believe is LB's little Jester giggle. Top-notch.

Watching this moment in the episode, I had a reaction very similar to the rest of the cast - hiding behind my hands, being giddy and almost screaming when the kiss finally happened. Watching your version of it almost made me cry. The music, the art style, the emotions so visible in the faces and gestures...gaww, this is too soft, I can´t.

I love the irony of art imitating life at 3:15 where Fjord tells Jester 'I told your mother I would look after you'; which is exactly what Travis will have told Laura's mother! Beautiful, simply beautiful.

Holy smokes, that was spectacular. Wholesome, cute, heartwarming. Bailey did what she said she was gonna do, and it turned into an iconic CR moment. "Ahhh Love is real!"
