They did not bury the canons. The Canons, they are so heavy, they actually sink in the dirt. I know bcz we hv some Forts over here with same canons. One even bigger then the one shown. The guns that you see were probably 7-inch Armstrong rifled breechloading guns (1860-70). Which were probably replaced with 9-inch rifled muzzle loaders in 1872 till 1890. Then the larger cannons on the rails still will be 9-inch rifled muzzle loaders which will have been used in 1893 onwards towards WW1. The 9 inch guns took a team of 9 men to load and fire. These guns fired projectiles weighing 256 pounds (116 kg). They were absolute warship killers. The bunker itself will have probably been built around 1850 so not anywhere near the 1600's and a little later than the Napolionic period. There are tonnes of these ace bunkers along the UK's coastline and they were mainly used to guard the coast from enemy warships. The most famous one being The Old Battery on the Isle Of Wight above the Needle stacks. Most of them are now privately owned by people living on them, or companies having hotels like this one in the video. Still very very cool intricate and interesting buildings. Definitely make the trip to the Isle of Wight one sometime Josh as theres tonnes of abandoned ones near there! :)
Drake's Island is a privately owned island in Plymouth Sound. The first recorded name for the island was in 1135, when it was referred to as St Michael's after the chapel erected on it. The chapel was rededicated to St Nicholas and the island adopted the same name. From the latter part of the 16th century the island was occasionally referred to as Drake's Island after Sir Francis Drake. Ii is only in about the last 100 years that this name has slipped into disuse and the name Drake's Island has been adopted. In 1583 Drake was made governor of the island. From 1549 the island began to be fortified as a defense against the French and Spanish, with barracks for 300 men being built on the island in the late 16th century. The 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom recommended a huge program of new fortifications to defend Plymouth. On Drake's Island, the existing battery at the center of the island was to be replaced by five 12-inch muzzle loading guns in open emplacements. A new battery was to be built on the southwestern end, of 21 9-inch guns in an arc of stone casemates with iron shields. The work was not complete in 1880. Six 12-pounder quick firing guns were added in 1897 and three 6-inch guns became the main armament in 1901; the original muzzle loaders were dumped under a pile of earth. Finally, in 1942, a modern twin 6-pounder gun was installed. Following World War II Drake's Island remained under the administration of the War Office, which, despite having announced in 1956 that it was no longer needed for defense purposes, did not finally vacate the island until 1963, when Plymouth City Council obtained a lease from the Crown with the aim of establishing a youth adventure training center there. It was opened in 1964, the year in which a mains water supply finally reached the island. Drake's Island Adventure Centre, under the custody of the Mayflower Centre Trust, operated until 31 March 1989, when the Mayflower Trust surrendered their lease to the Crown and sold off the boats and sports equipment. In 1995, Dan McCauley purchased Drake's Island with the intention of turning it into a hotel complex. In 2003, Plymouth City Council turned down a planning application from McCauley to build a hotel and leisure complex complete with helipad. In May 2005 the island attracted British media attention when one of the empty buildings on the island was squatted by a group of anti-nuclear protestors, Trident Ploughshares. In October 2018, the island was put up for sale and was purchased by Morgan Phillips, who plans to open the island to the public with a museum and heritage center. It was due to open for a one-off tour by 105 visitors on 15 March 2020 but this was cancelled due to COVID 19.

If you get back to the UK. Why not go to Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian Kingdom. Its a really lovely place to come.

A video with all of my favorite explorers in one video, today is a great day.
There’s a much easier entrance around the back of the island through a big window.
Also someone has just bought island and they are doing work on it at the mo .
They are looking into turning it into a hotel .
What an amazing video guy's. Worked out perfect for you and what a gent for showing you around ! Looking forward for the next .. Stay Safe
Josh there's still SOO much you haven't seen in the UK. Kent is rich of history with castles, forts, and everything. You need to come back and let us know when you do so we can meet!
Great video. Saw you on tv again. Caught the tale end of some kind of shut down power plant.
This is legit like a plot right out of a horror movie!! LOL. So fun to watch. Thanks for taking us these places!!
That guy was awesome showing you dudes around the island. What a legend. Great video, guys! :)
Matt Williams is the best love his channel the secret vault great content almost daily.
It's amazing seeing this place. Here in Portugal we have a fort too with the huge cannons still on it.
LMAOOO you were just straddling behind him like y’all were on a motorcycle😭 I love it
Love your videos of abandoned places and I like this video of the island and man was nice to show you the island.🌈🤗
The story in this video was so interesting, and it definitely was an adventure. Whenever Dan, or Matt, or all those great Brits I always follow are involved, it's usually no disappointment, believe me. I would need too much equipment to do that at my age. Lol. 😂
I was getting anxious waiting for zombie to come ruining out. lol ghosts in the tunnels.... lol its good that guy was nice & not rude .
Hi Josh i was very surprised by the video it is phenomenal thank you another surprise was listening to one of my fellow South African recognized the accent. Love from Johannesburg South Africa💝💝💝
I feel like Josh just kept talking over the worker while he was trying to explain shit. Haha
holds hands with a fighter while exploring LOL
Hey Josh have you ever thought of exploring Rancho los amigias in Downey California? I worked in one of the buildings back when I work with a patient eerie place.
Love seeing you do videos in my country. Hope you can get some time soon.
Your country? Is it now?
How Josh says "slippy" instead of "slippery" love it 😆 🤣

Wow, only just saw this has dropped... 11 days later. Cant wai to watch.
Exploring With Josh: "We're gonna go raid that island like Pirates!"
Me: "Yarrr shiver me timbers!" 🏴☠️ 🦜
You should go visit Corregidor(Fort Mills) it’s an island that was used to be a harbor defense in WW2 it’s located in the Philippines. Search it on google so you can know more about the history, and yes it's haunted.
Watching your vids has become part of my afternoon routine.
THERE you ARE!! I've been looking for to upload and asking other explorers where you were! I keep track of ALL of my adopted grandsons. Relieved to see you, Josh! NY Nana
