I love the way Red Dead Redemption 2 put you in the shoes of an older person somewhat past his prime who’s dying along with his way of life. The somewhat clunky controls actually helped this because you didn’t feel like the usual over powered player character, you felt like someone who was part of this world.

Agreed. "What Remains of Edith Finch" is an incredible experience. Annapurna publishes the best story-driven games. "If Found" is one of the most intensely vulnerable and raw stories I've ever encountered in a game. Also, "The First Tree" is pretty intense with the deep family trauma.

Shadow of collosus, objectively, doesn't have elite gameplay, graphics or distinctive and developed storytelling, altough it has its highpoints and a great ending. However there isnt a game in the history of gaming that has created such and overwhelmingly immersive and eerie atmosphere. Its minimalistic world is still one of the best to explore and just well look at. But that sense of darkness and danger even in broad daylight, the fact you sensed youre missing the tiniest piece of the puzzle from the first to last second of the game makes you live the life of your character. Masterpiece? Nah, that doesn't do it justice.

Yakuza/Like A Dragon, Kiryu has been a major part of my life since his debut in 2005, it is my favourite game series of all time and to anyone who hasn't played it yet, play it, it is an experience that will stick with you, with highs, lows, emotional moments and so many memories and bonds forged, you will really grow to love the characters and the stories these games will take you on. I really wish i could go back and play them all for the first time, they have become a huge part of my life with me replaying them on a regular basis. One last thing to say, you enjoy it and i'm really jealous and i can't wait for Like A Dragon 8.

    • @ghintz2156

I worship the Yakuza series but I'd never nominate any of the games for best writing lol. Rubber bullets and people needlessly getting killed because no one disarms the antagonist are reasons enough. They really aren't doing much to go beyond cliches. The characters themselves are the strength of the series, not the stories so much.
Yakuza 0 and Judgment probably have the best writing. 7 is pretty good overall. Gaiden was good but I think it could have gone further with the themes.

@@ghintz2156 I do agree w the "protag fails to disarm the villain and 'aniki' character gets shot" is annoying but rubber bullets I think isn't that bad of a twist that people make it out to be personally y4 and y5 are the lowest of the series in terms of writing but yeah aside from that the game's definitely deserve attention and awards

@sneaky5141 I didn't have an issue with the ending. Was tragic and different. But an ending that hate so much was assassins creed odessy. I actually loved the game and characters. Had 147 hours and cleared the map. But then the last like 2 hours was so rushed and unsatisfying. It's like they were working on the ending when the deadline for the game came up. It was such a fun game but that ending really took the wind out of my sails.

I will never get all the praise for APTI. The gameplay was bad, simple "puzzles" how to get through the level/plague or boring "throw a stone and sneak through" stealth parts.
No, I haven't felt for the characters, the kid was annoying, storytelling was great, but the story itself nothing special and the ending was absolutly ridiculous.
The game was okay, for such a small studio it was nice, but that's it and I hope the 2nd game improves a lot.
It's like Greedfall, looks nice, interesting setting, does a lot things right, but still misses some things and is a bit meh at the end.

Life is Strange (2015) has to be the best game I've ever played because of its story. The way this game makes you feel and care about the characters is really special. Also, the way the game keeps building up this bond up to the very end, forcing you to take what logically is supposed to be an easy decision and making it impossible to take after what you've just experienced.

Not so much the story of the game, but the backstory to Horizon Zero Dawn is brilliant. It is an excellent sci-fi tale, and then weaving in the game which is based on things going wrong as they inevitably do in a story, and how the world might still be saved was very satisfying to me (as a fan of sci-fi from a childhood reading Asimov to today).

I felt like the Horizon games had great potential, but didn't deliver for me. Feel they are overrated. Graphically amazing. But very repetitive. NPCs and markets were bland and boring. It just felt like fight, traverse, loot over and over. The conversation and dialogue never pulled me in like Witcher and Mass Effect. I often just skipped through because they were so pointless and uninteresting.

I would say that not only does Nier: Automata have one of the best stories in recent memory, but is also significant for telling it through more than mere exposition. I know it’s kinda old now, but my personal favourite backstory is actually in Assassin’s Creed 2.
The graphics are very dated now, but the story has stuck with me all these years later. It is so powerfully written, and imo, the greatest that Ubisoft has ever done!
The tale of Ezio Auditore, a arrogant young nobleman, whose world is turned upside down by betrayal by those he thought he could trust, was an epic rollercoaster ride of highs and lows.
Seeing Ezio becoming an assassin like his father, to hunt down those who conspired to his father’s and brothers deaths, was truly a masterpiece.
The compelling storyline, the well-developed characters, and set during the immersive historical Renaissance Italy ticked so many boxes, that even today, I regard it as one of the best games in the entire franchise!

You should absolutely play Tales from the Borderlands. It might be hard to get a decent copy of Silent Hill 2 though. I don't know about the remake but the original Mafia broke me with a boring taxi driving sequence that lasted over a half an hour. What an exciting way to start a game.
Also I know they can't: because gamers. But Last of Us II is better than part I. He alludes to the fact that the only thing really interesting about the plot of the first game is the finale. A lot of people hate the bold swings the sequel made, but I just think it's proof that games aren't really a medium for radical storytelling. People become too attached to the characters and too forgiving of their faults, makes it all but impossible to shift perspectives any way but laterally

I gotta toss one out for FF14 here, one of the best epic stories in gaming ever, in the highly unusual trappings of an mmo. It's a hell of a time investment since the main story is currently effectively 5 full length jrpgs back to back with all the expansions right now, and growing with every patch and expansion...but if you DO have the time available and want a really REALLY good fantasy epic its more than worth it, even if you have no intention to stick around for the endgame stuff and only want the story.
