The interesting thing about Steve Bruce is that he wasn't just a centre back, but he could play defensive midfield at a pinch, and do reasonably well - which is exactly why Ferguson bought him.

Frank McDougall at Aberdeen. Brought in to replace Mark McGhee. Costing only £100,000 he scored 22 goals in the league in his first season scoring a hat trick against Hearts in a 3-0 win to clinch the Scottish premier division. McDougall is still considered by many Aberdeen fans as one of the greatest players to play for Aberdeen. His career would have been far more recognised if he hadn't been forced into early retirement due to Spondylitis. His career at Aberdeen was plagued by injury but the fact that he cost only £100,000 and he effectively fired the dons towards a league title surely has to be considered one of his greatest signings.

Wa thinking that myself. I remember that game when it happened. Complete freak accident from a collision between mcclare, irwin & busst. Schmeichel ran away covering his eyes and got sick on the pitch. There was a pool of blood left in the goalmouth from the compound fracture. Unfortunately David Busst never played again. United held a testimonial for him about 5 years later. Think he was only able to play for about half an hour due to the effects of the injury.

Whoever bought RVP that season was going to win the prem, Buying him was essentially buying the league, and after that season he dropped off massively. Fergie knew this but was happy to get the league 1 final time, when you think of cost spend and impact it was only the one season. I would even say Tevez was a better signing than RVP using Alfie’s criteria

What about doing the '7 Worst Offloads', the players that were sold by each club for pretty much nothing that went onto greater success.
Such as Alex Ferguson letting Gordon Strachan go to Leeds for half a million as he thought that he was a spent force.
Gary McAllister from Leeds to Liverpool as he wanted a two year contract and Leeds only offered 1, then he won loads and stayed there for five years.
You see where I'm going with this!
