    Watching Manchester City down the years I think the best debut I ever saw was Carl Griffiths, we signed him for 500,000 from Shrewsbury(then in the 3rd Div) I think he came on as a sub 20mins or so to go against a very good Leeds side scored and really turned the game. Our next game was at home to Everton and he scored very early on, but was sadly injured within the first 15mins... In the rest of his time with us he only managed 2 goals in 20 odd games and he dropped down the leagues again

    • @thesecond4767
      @thesecond4767 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Do you think his injury was the catalyst of his demise?

    • @mjc8281
      @mjc8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@thesecond4767 Honestly I think it was more of a confidence thing going from the 4th tier to the top is a huge ask, even then he really did explode in those two games, I will add that the Everton game he was kicked to hell and when he came back it was into a side that was also struggling to score goals(and in general). I will maintain though that had his career been managed better he would have played at the top level for an extended period of time, but anyway I guess that's football the margins between success and failure are so small.

    That Thiago Silva entry reminded me of a video idea with some potential (hopefully). I don't think many people will know that Thiago Silva used to play for FC Porto and Dynamo Moscow on his first attempt in Europe, but that his second attempt in Europe was the succesful one. Could you list seven Brasilians who failed on their first attempt in Europe, but succeeded on their second one?

    At a lower level, I remember Portsmouth signing Peter Marinello from Arsenal for £100K in 1972, a huge sum in those days. His debut was in a friendly against top division West Ham where he played a crucial role on the wing as Pompey won 4-2. But in the league he achieved very little and Portsmouth struggled in the lower reaches of the old Div 2 for a couple of years before being relegated.

    • @newforestpixie5297
      @newforestpixie5297 ปีที่แล้ว

      In 2000 the Cherries signed Chukki Eribenne and his debut was memorable because of the 30 yard rocket which he tucked away in the top corner of the net. Dean Court went mental believing that they had the new Pele - come the next game , many kids had his name on their replica shirts and the place was buzzing with expectation for this new hero. Unfortunately Chukki never scored again for the club but did manage to gain his own chant after creeping up behind the Reading Mascot , lifting of his head and getting chased which earned him the then controversial chant which went “ Chukkis’ gonna get you “……I have a feeling he was moved on to Weymouth then Havant & Waterlooville or vice versa. I do remember Peter Maranello being touted as “ the new George Best “ because it’s the first time I’d heard this phrase connected to another player. Best of luck to Pompey 👍

He was a finalist of FIFA 2007 U-20 World Cup in which he scored 3 goals and won the award "Talent of Year 2007" in Czech Republic. In his first ever game in Bundesliga he scored a hattrick (Frankfurt won 3:0), but since then everything went down for him. Alcoholism, depressions, injuries, this all led to his downfall. In 2013 he came back from Germany to the Czech League, but injuries didn't let him to play football regurarly. He was losing his form, he then shortly experienced French second division, German third division and in 2017 he ended his professional career in Czech second division with FK Varnsdorf at the age of 30. Now he plays only on amateur level with FK Řeporyje in 6th divison of Czech League system

    Re Ibrahimovic - It's worth noting that Cesena that season (either newly-promoted or starting their second season in the top division, I forget which but I think they'd just been promoted) were very impressive against the bigger teams, and stayed up with relative ease. That first-season courage and enterprise was very much with them, and in that context, it's not quite so surprising that Zlatan didn't make an impact against them...no-one else really did that either!

    Kinda disappointed you didn't include the great ROYSTON DRENTHE for Real Madrid. 20 minutes into his debut against Sevilla in the Spanish Supercup he scored an absolute banger from 40 meters and looked unbelievable all game... he was being hyped upon his signing as Madrid's response to the emergence of Messi at Barcelona, and after that performance people genuinely thought that he could be the guy. It was all Madrid, football fans and the press would talk about for the next 2 weeks... aaaand after that he only scored 3 more goals in 65 games over 5 seasons, went on to play for a handful of clubs with unpronounceable names and now he's playing in Spain's 4th tier at 34.

      Also, 2 years prior to that, ROBINHO made arguably one of the best debuts in football ever against Cádiz. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, look it up. One of the best individual performances I've seen coming from the bench. Every ball he touched he turned it into gold. He had been hyped up back in Brazil as the New Pelé (sure, one of many, but they were really serious about Robinho), and Madrid had to go through a really tough negotiation process with Santos that lasted from November to August, with a lot of media drama and attention, and in that match Madrid's effort and patience seemed more than justified... after that he was half decent during his 4 seasons at Madrid, but never lived up to the hype and is overall seen as a flop in Spain.

    I remember fredrico mecadea at man United back in the day 😭😭😭😭. Flopped so badly 😢😔. We still had a brilliant team back then between 2007-2009. 3 league titles in a row , 1 champions league title , 2 champions league finals in a row , 3 champions league semi finals in a row & the best player in the world CR7 😎😱

    Messi's debut for Argentina was an omen of his less than stellar international career rather than his out-of-this-world cosmic club career...

    • @innocento.1552
      @innocento.1552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Less than stellar I don't think. He was always a star for Argen. The problem was the coaching. Even for the Copa America he carried the team on his back up to victory.

    • @jimbob-robob
      @jimbob-robob 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@innocento.1552 like, that's just your opinion man...
      Every time I watched him for Argentina he looked a little stifled and lost under the weight of expectations and his rate of scoring was some way behind his club effort and never on the most important moments or games even if still respectable.
