Artist: Derek And The Dominos
Album: Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Year: 1970
I do not claim ownership to this song.
Lyrics:
What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.
Chorus
Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.
Chorus

1970. I (27) was madly in love with a 21-year-old, woman who went on to do modeling. A real beauty. But ya know, that was only a part of it. She had this amazing sexy, fluid tenor voice and a laugh that would melt my heart. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SONG. I bought the cassette and every time we hit the road, top-down on a Buick Grand Sport, we'd sing, pound on the dash, swinging and swaying....Sadly, I drove her to modeling school in Miami 2 years later and we never saw one another again. This song still after all these years tugs at my heartstrings.

The first three minutes of the song are just the foreplay to the magical piano part and ending.... A masterpiece!
Piano ending? I always thought of it as the slide guitar ending myself.
It's all about the coda.
@@edthacow It's both slide guitar and piano, I think
🍎
@@edthacow It's Duane Allman's slide guitar through out the entire song, though Clapton plays a good melody guitar.
The last 4 minutes of this song sounds like the credit scene of life. Simply heavenly.

Happy Birthday Eric.....
Funny story about this song. A couple of years ago, I had heard the "Classic Rock" station play this song on about 3 different occasions and cut in before the song was over. I HAD to e-mail them and tell them, you can't call yourself a "Classic Rock" station if you are going to do that! The song is NOT over until Duane does the "little bird" at the end! About 2-3 days after my e-mail I heard the song again on the station and they waited until it was over and the DJ said....."Gotta wait for the bird, it's not over until then". I guess I got through to them! :)
Excellent, and true
Ha that's so cool! :-)
Rick Bray Damn right! In classic rock you play the entire song with out talking over it!!
You rock Rick...... Thanks for schooling them good!

The majority of my friends only like the first three minutes of this song, but personally you have to listen to all of it to get the most out of it. It's one of the best songs ever created

I've loved this song since I heard it in Goodfellas.
I always choke up when that piano transition hits, idk why but I do
👍 I personally like 2:05 - 3:05 just as much as the Epic outro.
I don't know what it is but it just strikes me as simply genius. It's like a resounding outburst of joy, tension and even sadness. It's astonishing and the most 'trance/techno' part of the song too.
Reminds me of Rainbow bridge Mario kart 64
The piano part feels so bittersweet. Idk how else to put it
The transition to the piano part is one of the best things I have ever heard in my life

No one is talking about Jim Gordon's drumming. He smashed the drums in this one!!
@@NoOne-kr4jc - Nice try. When Rita Coolidge attempted to sue over that bullshit claim, the studio records were produced and the recording of the Coda itself - two years before Coolidge started dating Gordon. Jim Gordon has even called by many in the profession the greatest rock drummer of all time.

You’re missing the point of this song
I dedicate this classic to the late great Rat Liotta. This song was lengendary 18 years before Goodfellas was released. But sometimes a movie and its characters can make the song their own. When the piano exit comes on in the second part of this song i can hear the voice of Henry Hill describing how Jimmy wanted all of the cash for himself. Classic. Thank you Ray for your great and memorable work. Rip.
Mannn I swear everytime it comes on I recite the whole scene out lol beautiful

Never get tired of this classic. IMO one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded.
A song of two halves. The first half is like a raging hard fire, the second half is a glorious procession through the embers.
The end of this song, with the piano--the instrumental--is SO beautiful!😊💒

Kudos to Clapton for deciding on the spot to add on Jim Gordon's piano melody as an ending after hearing him by chance play it in the studio. Its effect is of beautiful rain washing down a summer heatwave, and it gives the song its full epic dimension.

OMG. That piano is just beautiful. I love this song. One of my favorites to come out of the 60's. What can I say. Eric Clapton aka Derek and the Domino's.
I grew up in the 70's so was very familiar with Layla. But not the full length version with the piano section - because they never played that on the radio, only a truncated version without it. So I spent much of my life never knowing it even existed. Fast forward to 1989 and I'm on holiday with some friends and we're staying in a hotel. I'm in my room and getting ready to go out, and this comes on over those entertainment consoles that some hotels have, which is probably just the hotel putting on a CD. And Layla came on. I just thought, oh I haven't heard that for a while.....as the first part played. Then came the piano part that I never knew existed. I was simply lost for words. I'm sat on the edge of the bed, moved beyond belief, just staring ahead, not quite being able to comprehend the beauty of what I'm hearing. Fast forward again to 2019 and the last proper episode of The Grand Tour in front of an audience. They played the full version of it over a montage of things Clarkson Hammond and May had done over the previous 17 years. The combination of the memories and the music moved me to tears, as it did a lot of people. That's the effect this music has.
And to think, this piano section was a complete accident. When it was written this tune was never intended to have this part. It only went on after Clapton heard Jim Gordon playing a piano piece in the studio he had composed completely separately. He convinced him to include it in Layla and it was recorded about a week after the first part.
The brilliance of Martin Sorcesse to take a piece of this song and make it a perfectly selected theme song.
In what movie?im asking because i can watch it and dont remember

From: A fan of an iconic trio and great music!
This song has two stories. The first part is all about fatuation, lust and desire. When it becomes instrumental, it’s all about guilt of wanting another man’s wife. Guilt of betraying mateship. Hence no vocals, he couldn’t put words into those guilty feelings.
That’s my take on the song. Probs not true but I love the second part of the song.
Regardless, it’s a timeless masterpiece.

Had an amazing ride with the trio since Top Gear. And when The Grand Tour came out I was over filled with joy seeing our 3 best mates do adventures again. And its sad the Tent has to go..I personally loved the tent and conversation street, the Ebola Drome, Abbie, The American and they after show discussion. While it was a tearful wnding montage from Top Gears best moments to these, its also a happy ending to a story that's been told. And while the chapter closes at the tent, the story goes on with their adventures. When the trio retire, no one can take their place as our childhood and adolescent stage of life when it comes to laughter...even as adults its hard. But they will always be remembered. The Orangutan, The Hammster and Captain Slow. And on that Bombshell and Terrible dissappointment, I hope we all continue to enjoy their adventures till the end. See you guys there💖
2:51 that high note...
this is like a drug to me
Derek and the Dominoes were an extraordinary band. The piano ending to Layla was written by the drummer, Jim Gordon. What we have in the Layla album is a group of suberb musicians that were all on the same groove and allowed to perform and contribute their best. Bobby Whitlock in his youtube videos talks about Clapton encouraging the band to add what they could to each song. Apparently there was little ego involved. I think the music speaks for itself. IMHO the greatest R&R/blues album ever made. This music never grows old.
