RIVER OF TEARS
This song was recorded very early in the Pilgrim sessions. Eric Clapton believes this song is as good as anything he’s ever done before. In fact, it became the standard for the rest of the album. “Lyrically, it is about a specific person. My impulse for writing the song was initially very manipulative. I was always toying with the idea that when she’d hear this song there would be a reconciliation or something. It had a purpose. Then it started getting vindictive and at some point I started feeling like the lyrics were becoming too melodramatic. I realized that the way to save it was to bring it back to talking about me and that maybe I’m an unavailable person. Maybe it’s me that’s unavailable. That whole thing in the song about just drifting from town to town and not really being able to fit in, takes the blame off somebody else and places in on myself.” (From May 1998 Guitar World)

ANYBODY who has ever lost a loved one can understand this song. Written by someone who has lost large, but written from a heart that we all know, as we have all lost loved ones. He put his soul and emotion into a song for ALL of us to understand.

I too first heard this in Dancing At The Blue Iguana. I had to stop - rewind - listen again. So moving. I believe this performance is clearly Clapton's best vocal work. Also credit the production. Very spare. As if Eric is sitting right next to you telling his woes.

Last year I lost my mom to Covid-19 and didn't get to say goodbye. I played this song again and cried. I know I will see them again in the next life. Keep your Faith in Christ.

I lost my wife and baby to a home fire and this was played at their memorial it's been 12 years and I still breakdown wishing one day I can go back in time and save them, the hurt has ever stopped, I miss them so much, when they needed me the most I wasn't fast enough to save them ...that guilt 😔 😭 of not being able to save them and hearing them scream haunts me ,I break down daily,that's when you know, that love was unconditional and true to your soul, when you cry like you just lost them 12 years later, and you search and search for way to get over it and you never get where you want because you feel that was the path you were supposed to go down being with them and not with out them 💔 😢, I pray everyday that I pass on from a natural death just to be with them and feel the love from her once more because nothing else feels right...

I watched my uncle Tom rock back and forth to this song after finding out he was dying of cancer that spread thru his body. We drank to the the many good times we shared, and he put this song on repeat and cried for hours. We both cried in a profound understanding. It is something I will never forget.
For my 1st (late) husband & our daughter, Sarah. He passed away in 1981 (he had lymphoma & was only 36 yrs. young) & our Sarah passed away in 1984. She was diagnosed with leukemia less than a year from her daddy’s passing. She was 7-1/2 yrs young. Their memories are made of light.

I just came across this song...not meaning to find this song but I did. I'm crying my eyes out. My late husband suffered from COPD, he had a difficult time breathing and was on oxygen, we slept in different rooms for quite some time bc of his condition. I just wanted him to feel comfortable. I now regret feeling like that bc I could have been mistaken, maybe it would have made him feel better, me lying bedside him. A week before he passed I had a feeling of just wanting to go lay by him and hold him to let him know I loved him, that he was loved. He knew I did but this feeling I felt from within felt important to pursue. I walked in the room and he was resting quitely, I chose not to interrupt his calmness, his sleeo bc he wasn't struggling at that moment to sleep. I walked away. He passed away on Mother's Day 2020. Then last night before I laid down I was reminiscing in my mind about that time, feeling guilty, wishing I would have just laid down by him and held him. I got teary eyed and went to sleep. I had a dream in the middle of the night that he was sitting on the couch in our living room and he looked really healthy and good I was scrubbing the floor on my hands and knees.I heard him say something, not sure what he said but the look in his eye made me feel like he was feeling sorrowful. I thought to myself I can ignore what he was saying and continue on scrubbing or I could stop for a moment and give him attention as that's what I felt he was trying to say to me. I chose to crawl over and lay my head gently on his lap to allow him to know I was there and that I loved him. I looked up and he smiled and then he began fading away. I couldn't understand why he was leaving but then I realized he wasn't really there bc he had passed away. I started crying really hard and I woke up bawling my.eyes out, realizing it was only a dream. Was he telling me to not feel guilty for not taking that opportunity in lying down beside him bc he now knows where my heart truly was and the smile he gave me was a sign of happiness that he wanted me to feel in letting me know, he knows he was loved by me. I'm not sure, but I feel like that's what he was doing as he drifted away, it felt like he was telling me to be at peace and goodbye. I Love You, Honey!! May you rest in peace! "I will see you again!" People don't take life for granted...move when your spirit tells you to move bc it could be your last chance!! Embrace your loved ones and let then know you are always there for them heart, mind, body and soul!! God Bless each and everyone of you! Love to ALL!

I ‘grew up’ with him and still love his ‘older’, more ‘classics’ like Layla and Cocaine, as well as this one (although done later on), along with his more recent songs and performances (such as his live concert in ‘23 that I went to). But THIS - with him playing and singing AND the added video background makes it my favorite yet! * I’m not implying that I didn’t like or feel the others versions weren’t good - they were/are. To me, this song shows and proves that there’s a completely different ‘side’ and style to Clapton’s more ‘well known’ one based on its meaningful lyrics and the more thought provoking, ‘melancholy’ vibe it gives (as opposed to ‘Layla’). Another winner in my book! 👏
