He explained 80’s hip hop in NYC really well. To be apart of the beginnings was special. When he mentioned DJ AJ I started singing “Aaaa-Jaayyyy…Aaaa-jaaay-aaa”” lol. The memories. And now that I think of it I can agree that the hip hop sound was changing pretty quickly. We were going from (on wax)Kurtis Blow to LL-the beatboxing of Doug E Fresh and the Fat Boys--Whodini-Run DMC--and by the end of the 80’s comes Eric B &Rakim, KRS-1,etc.
Crazy…People who didn’t do well in school, dressed the flyest!. But his mom kicking him out after. Him & LL Cool J kinda living on the bus. From Andrew Jackson. At 14, Him no where to go, but to his grandparents In Atlanta. Real culture shock!. Factz, No matter where u were from, u wanted to be B1- Black First, even back then. U wanted to be part of that hiphop movement . I really felt his story!.
If they he to Jackson with LL that means he went to school with Bimmy from the Supreme team too. Jackson is also the same high school that 50 Cent would attend and later drop out.
I grew up in South Ozone Park Jamaica Queens and can confirm what Bryce is describing as fact. Sounds like he's taking about 1985-1988?? This was the height of the crack era. Normal hard working middle class families were infiltrated by the crack epidemic. Dad went from owning two yellow cabs making big money to hitting that pipe and loosing it all.My brother was selling on the corner, probable a little pion soldier for the supreme crew for all I know. And Yes the back drop of all of this coincided with the evolution of hip hop. I believe this dark time period in NYC birthed the conscious rap era of Native Tongue and the like. Masterful Art is better borne from adversity. Great convo...still have Groove Theory in my rotation. Good times and a great time to have lived in the NY.
