PLEASE NOTE: the sander broke after not very much use, and I've since found out that others (Matt at Badger Workshop and Leo at Hand-i-Craft) have had issues with theirs too. I talk about the problem and repair in this video: th-cam.com/video/WNPD_6-Gdmw/w-d-xo.html please watch that for more info. I still love the sander, but I also hate it, because it has proven to be unreliable. Therefore I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING IT!
Thanks for the update. For the last few years I’ve had a festool RO150. For the first 3 years of its life it had light use I mean like used 5-6 times, never in anger. Now I’m using it more commercially, and today it’s shate itself. Just next to Christmas so can’t get it fixed until new year. They ‘tool manufacturers’ are all at it, hyp it up saying our tools are the best, but still made to a budget. I’d go pneumatic DA sander but need the extraction.
I’ve had the Mirka including their branded vacuum and hoses and I have to say how superb it is. I’ve even sanded a shop floor made out of oak with it. Fantastic dust collection when in the horizontal mode. I bought mine through a trade Dulux event and it worked out to be great value. Mirka hoses fit perfectly. Once you get used to it it really works itself. Not had issue with Abranet disks, for the oak floor I used 80 grit paper. Would buy it again - real workhorse. Thanks for the review.
Its been my experience that there is no discount alternatives in sanding. I think I mentioned it, I've been using Mirka almost exclusively since 1992. The paper discs are the only way to go. For sanding flat I use an air powered Mirka ($200 USD) over a down draft sanding table. Probably not useable in a small shop. On the bench and in the field I use the corded version which has to be over $600 these days. You will find that using the sander in the field with a shop-vac attached will make very little mess to clean later. The ability of a shop-vac attachment to hoover debris as it's created is a top factor in selecting field tools. Great review.
Awesome this review was brilliant you get what you pay for I’ve bought 2 and it has given my Bespoke Furniture that extra edge and sales have increased because it cuts work time down too 🤗
I have had a Mirka Deros since they were first available - excellent product especially when used with a shop vac with a power take off. Great for workshop sanding and invaluable for diy plaster repairs etc around the house. It’s a case of you get what you are able or willing to pay for.
Just got my Mirka sander today, my previous sander is a Metabo 450 turbo orbital had it 10 years and apart from replacing the VELCRO disc last year it’s never let me down and still works perfectly but it’s heavy. As I’m now doing a lot of sanding on the vertical I decided to purchase the Mirka, now I’ve only had it one day but it’s a joy to use if you can say that about Sanding. No one likes doing it but this machine makes it a pleasure to use, so I’m just sanding predominantly Redwood and the time it takes and the finish is phenomenal. I really can not believe for such a small lightweight fits in the hand sander just how this performs, I’m using the supplied Abranet discs and yes the one I have had on all day is showing a slight distortion on a section of the perimeter but the stock removal is something else. I have a Metabo 25ltr vacuum which I bought with the sander again never let me down and are about £260 I think now, the supplied Mirka hose fits perfectly so was we’ll chuffed. I’ve paid £395 for this which includes 50 assorted Abranet discs, yes it’s a big outlay but if Carslberg did sanders this would be it ( not that I drink that shite ) I know there are some reliability problems but after having spoken to a painter polisher friend he’s had one over 5 years with the vac and never had a problem and that’s used everyday, so fingers crossed. I don’t usually get excited over new tools machines and I have some top class stuff, but because sanding is such a monotonous pain in the arse got to do task it’s made it about as good as it gets. So well done Mirka, only gripe the hose does not fit in the Systainer box but I can live with that 😊
Tip. You can wash abranet disks to revive them and, when they edge rip (as ripping can occur when being clumsy) you trim them with scissors to use on the smaller sanding head thereby getting twice the use. I have found abranet can last a very long time if you are careful much longer than other sand papers and that is very cost effective. .
If you buy a mirka dust extractor and use the correct hose supplied you’ll find you will be able to remove the power cable easier as the hose is easily removable rather than using yellow tape.
Another great review Keith, you really do cover all bases, 125 and 150 ha ha, get it, bases, I use Mirka and 3M air powered sanders in my day job, and the Abranet discs, the trouble is air pipes are worse than a power cable, keep up the good work, enjoyable as ever.
Rest Express sell Mirka hose to tool adaptors for under 7 quid. And the Mirka hoses themselves are a fraction of the Festool costs. Nice honest and useful review.
Thanks for that. I have a Bosch RO sander and I have the same problem - the discs won't stick to the base (despite buying a new base) - so this was very useful food for thought.
discoverd this tool in australia , i loved !!! best sander in therm of grip and shape use , agree that is easy to acidentaly fire if not turned off , and disc rip quickly and like you said they cost big money , luckily hard use every day ot broken yet with his vaccum power kit , i need to replage the grip disk because i used other disk that fly away or old abra disk that damage my velcro surface and yes belive me that spare parts cost aloot , but still my favorite sander so compact
Thanks for the review. I've had my eye on the mirka for a while was gonna go Rotex but I love the low profile, top trigger var.speed and shape of this one the on /off button features are a plus too
The Abranet discs are quite delicate so for trade use you need Abranet ACE which are stronger, still not unbreakable but will last longer. They also do Abranet HD in grits from 40-120 i believe, which i haven't managed to damage, very sturdy. The abranet discs are about twice the price of other premium discs but then they last 4 or 5 times longer so in reality they work out to be cheaper, work faster, cleaner and give a better finish. I have used the discs for a while but sadly don't yet have the machine.
Great review keith, and an impressive machine, i agree with you on sanding in can be a chore at times especially for long periods the dust it creates is an utter annoyance and a health hazard so i try to avoid it as much as possible, thats why i liked your card scraper video, i think thats the way forward for me or a scraper plane to save on my thumbs!!!, thanks again, really enjoy your channel.
Hi there; I want to buy a Mirka Deros to sand my epoxy work. There are two options in front of me, which one I choose will give me a better performance and result. Mirka Deros orbit 5.0 or Mirka Deros orbit 2.5?
Abranet is great for fine finish work and also in between paint and clearcoats. It’s the best type of sanding for plastics as it doesn’t fur up the plastic like traditional abrasives. The Mirka Sander although expensive is worth the dollar in my opinion. Very economical to use compared with air, and also OHS with noise and vibration issues with a lot of sanders makes this a winner winner chicken dinner in my book. 3 year guarantee on a daily tool suggests the quality of this brand. I’ve used these for the last 8 years in the automotive industry and wouldn’t recommend anything else.
I was looking at picking one of these up tomorrow so this couldn’t have come at a better time. I was pretty sold on it anyway but it’s always good to know other people’s opinions! Cheers mate!
Thank you....very informative especially as I’ve been looking at the Bosch one you mentioned and the Festool. I want to work on cars as well as wood so this has swung my vote. Thanks again.
I bought a Mirka around three years ago. It’s the best I have ever had and makes sanding pleasurable quick and gives brilliant results. It’s light and easy to use, but expensive. Is it worth the extra money? Yes!
buy the mirka dust extractor hose its $50 on amazon no adapter needed and hose it self screws right into the sander i love it even more with the mirka hose
Try 3m 150mm cubitron. Best pads I've ever used. Way way stronger than abranet. Loads of tiny holes for great dust extraction. Last ages. I currently use the discontinued ceros sander
Interesting that you didn't get on with the Bosch GEX 150 Turbo. I didn't either. It's priced as if their flagship but I tested that and the GEX 125/150 AVE and it was no competition. The 125/150 AVE is easily the better sander. It's very nearly a masterpiece! The dual chassis makes it hands down THE most comfortable rand/orbital I've ever used. As at home with delicate polishing as with high removal. Love it. Have to say though, if I get a second, I'll defo give the Mirka a look.
I use this Mirka too.. it's a fine tool but the speed control on mine failed and had to be replaced while still in warranty...this maybe a common fault because another workshop on the same industrial estate with the same tool developed a similar fault.. I got the Mirka extraction/ hoover at the same time but with hindsight should had got a suitable festool unit..
I have an old Mirka w the external power pack that STILL gets down 5 days a week, best orbital sander ever in my opinion...guess the new ones are not the same, thanks for the heads up
Chris Perry Hi I have three of the bosh Sanders that he shown they work very very well but they are heavy and you must use two hands. But we do use other smaller Sanders for more detail sanding the Bosch is a good tool but heavy
Been looking some more at these Mirka sanders and have found that the exact same sander is sold under Metabo and Delmeq brands. Thought the Metabo one would be cheaper but unfortunately not. In fact, my guess is that they're all made by Metabo for Mirka and Delmeq as Metabo appear to produce tools for other brands.
Yeah looks like you’re right! The metabo is actually £350 at Anglia tool centre and comes without some of the Mirka accessories but that’s a good price!
Wurth Emerald multi hole discs...the best that i have found. Try them and thank me later. I have been using a Ceros for probably over 4 years now and it is simply awesome!!
Great review!! I haven't seen any good sander that don't need a vacuum hose connected to it for it to have good dust collection, and if you are forced to use a vacuum hose on it then I don't see the point of having it cordless. If you pair it up with an extractor with a socket for automatic start on it then it will make more sense to have a sander with a cable, else you would have to have some sort of wireless connection for the sander to the extractor for this feature to work.
The best thing about cordless sander would be the ability to sand outdoors and where dust getting in the air is less of a concern, but for workshop sanding dust collection is definitely best I think
Rag 'n' Bone Brown True but that's more for diy use, for professional use then you would use an extractor so you won't have to clean up a huge mess afterwards and not waste time to go outside instead, since both of those mean that you will spend more time on a job instead of taking in more projects instead = more money earned. And that Mirka kit is as you said really awesome for professional use.
As a fan of yellow tools I would have thought maybe a flexvolt one would be possible to be as good as a corded one. Annoyingly they don't even make an 18v cordless sander yet. Surely being tied to the mains isn't a huge issue as you are still tethered to the hose for the dust extraction?
Yeah I was surprised to see that DeWalt don’t have one, and that’s what makes me think maybe the technology isn’t available to make a good cordless one yet... who knows. Battery operated means you can use it outdoors where connecting to a vacuum isn’t as critical and also I think unless your power lead is tethered to your vacuum hose, having two things hooked up to a tool can be a bit of a pain. Another good thing about the Mirka which I forgot to mention in the video is that the power cable is a generous length which makes it easier to move around
The point of these sanders is control. If you have ever use a pneumatic d/a you have almost complete control all wrist motion and with one hand. Plus power, low end torque allows you to sand at low rpms and still cut aggressively. This keeps sand paper sharper. Point of all this is, to match this with cordless, it would be heavy and awkward as hell.
Very good review. Thanks for sharing. What material is the abranet sanding disk made of? I thought at first it was a kind of metal mesh. But when it is so easy to tear or brake it is probably an other material.
Great review, mate 👌 That sander looks impressive, however it's a scary price tag for DIY'ers. Bizarre how the cordless sanders have no get up and go considering the cordless grinders are beasts and cut through some pretty thick steel. Go figure, huh!
@@RagnBoneBrown Three reasons: (1) Duration of use: An average grinding session is way shorter than an average sanding session. (2) Weight: One of the Mirka's greatest features is its light weight. (3) Power: You can get away with less power on a grinder (disk slows down, you wait until it speeds up again), but not so much on a sander. At 650W, you would run through a 4Ah battery every 6 minutes. The math just doesn't add up. Battery technology is going to get better, but not that better anytime soon.
Hi I bought the sander on the back of listening to you and I wouldn't be with out it .but I've lost the wrench .where Could i order it I'm in a bit of a fix .
Keith, it’s nearly a year now since you bought this and are you still as happy with it? I’m only asking as at some point in the future I am going to have to expand beyond my black and decker mouse sander and invest in a random orbital sander. This is a huge sum of money, but the idea of it being very light weight and easily useable with one hand is very appealing to me. Cheers, Leo 😀
Hi Leo, yes still very happy with it. I did find out though that Metabo do exactly the same sander in a green colour so worth checking the prices to see what works out cheapest. Model no is sxe150 and they do models with different orbits
All you mirka users have failed to mention all abranet type discs require a protective interface pad to protect your backing plate. I myself have gone through 500 mirka abranet discs and love them. I was about to get this sander, but seems to be unreliable. Your test on 120grit is slow compared to my sander. Most sanders generate vacuum without a dust extractor. So a dust bag is enough.
Being tethered to one thing is always going to be less awkward than two unless you have the means to tie them together (which I don’t because my dust collection comes from the ceiling and power socket from the perimeter). In a small workshop like mine where power is on the walls, the more cables that you have to climb over or under the worse the situation is
I just don't understand why Mirka thinks it is necessary to give the cord a plug on the device side. a sander is a device with all kinds of vibrations there can be. My Mirka Deros keeps cutting out because the plug on the device side vibrates out of the holder. otherwise a very nice sander. but worthless if I have to keep pressing the plug.
What's the point of cordless if you've got to have a dust extraction hose? I've got an air driven Mirka and the air hose is attached to the dust hose. If it were electric, and had a battery, you'd still have the connection headache, but it would weigh way more because of the battery. Any portable power tool that needs dust collection will have less benefit when it comes to cordlessness.
@@RagnBoneBrown just saw it. Oh that's bad. Festool do a nearly identical product for same sort of money. Mirka have offered to come and do a demo at my workshop so I'll be asking them about this to see if it's a common fault. Not that the rep will admit anything like that.
99% of the use cases for Festool and Mirka sanders are shops in which people are hooking up to the air systems [either shop collection or the ecosystem based extractors]. As such, going cordless is ........... pointless. You won't be tied down to a cord while you're ... tied down ... to a hose. Plus batteries tend to cost money, wear out, and run out during use, so for me, its only valuable for something for which the cord is exceptionally annoying, like a power drill [and frankly even then i only need to be cordless half the time].
Being tethered to one thing is better than being tethered to two, especially in a small workshop where it’s not always possible to tie the two together, plus winding cables up and unravelling them each time you use a tool is super annoying!
Mirka has a huge problem with their Deros as more and more users experience malfunctions - especially with the electronics and the motor that gets floppy loose. ARE YOU LISTENING, MIRKA ??? !!!
I hear your preference for cordless..... but fail to understand your quest when I see you use a vacuum hose. I too have read of many failures of this model. Costs like a Rolls-Royce......operates like a harbor freight quality tool!! (Thee worst, cheapest Chinese junk you can buy)!! Like marrying a beautiful woman ....only to find out after the wedding.....the biggest mistake of your life.....!! just jim

Have you found a good sander yet?
ive had my bosch 125/150 sander for ten years never missed a beat absolutely brilliant and never changed a Velcro pad
@@anthonymiddlesex6859 nice one, thanks I'll have a look. Most of my tools are Bosch and have lasted ages.

That sander looks impressive, however it's a scary price tag for DIY'ers. Bizarre how the cordless sanders have no get up and go considering the cordless grinders are beasts and cut through some pretty thick steel. Go figure, huh!
Yeah, it’s difficult to understand!
Don't think they're targeting the do it yourself market
@@RagnBoneBrown Three reasons: (1) Duration of use: An average grinding session is way shorter than an average sanding session. (2) Weight: One of the Mirka's greatest features is its light weight. (3) Power: You can get away with less power on a grinder (disk slows down, you wait until it speeds up again), but not so much on a sander. At 650W, you would run through a 4Ah battery every 6 minutes. The math just doesn't add up. Battery technology is going to get better, but not that better anytime soon.
Can it sand plaster walls
Hi I bought the sander on the back of listening to you and I wouldn't be with out it .but I've lost the wrench .where Could i order it I'm in a bit of a fix .
I think it’s a standard size, I can measure it for you tomorrow - you might wanna drop me an email and remind me to check though!
The size should be 24 mm 👍
Keith, it’s nearly a year now since you bought this and are you still as happy with it? I’m only asking as at some point in the future I am going to have to expand beyond my black and decker mouse sander and invest in a random orbital sander. This is a huge sum of money, but the idea of it being very light weight and easily useable with one hand is very appealing to me. Cheers, Leo 😀
Hi Leo, yes still very happy with it. I did find out though that Metabo do exactly the same sander in a green colour so worth checking the prices to see what works out cheapest. Model no is sxe150 and they do models with different orbits
This sander seems very similar to automotive air DA sanders. One wonders if a auto sander would work well for wood working
Definitely. Automotive abrasive definitely more premium than wood abrasives.
Can u use diablo sanding discs? I love diablo discs last forever..
Most of the other sanders have a 12K high speed. The super expensive Mirka max is 10K. Could you notice the difference? Thx
Honestly what’s the point of a cordless sander if you use dust collection? You still have the hose there.
How important is cordless on a tool that you can't sensibly use without dust extraction attached?
You can’t use it outside and in the workshop 1 hose is better than a hose and a power cable
if you want it to be cordless, you better prepare to hold a 5kmAh battery... amazing machine, probably the best on the market.
I agree it's a great tool, shame it broke after not very much use
Saw some comments elsewhere about it being prone to overheating causing failures. You had any grief?
Yes I've had issues, check my latest vlog
@@RagnBoneBrown just saw it. Oh that's bad. Festool do a nearly identical product for same sort of money. Mirka have offered to come and do a demo at my workshop so I'll be asking them about this to see if it's a common fault. Not that the rep will admit anything like that.
nice is that mirka or mirkava.....
Why not Festool?
Mine stopped working after 5 years...I used it alot but I'm. Not sure I can justify $650 for 5 years... Not happy about that...
Hi just come across this review how is the sander holding up and are you still happy with it.
I’m still happy. Matt at Badger Workshop has had an issue with his
Rag 'n' Bone Brown . Thanks for the reply do you know what the issue was that Matt had .
Festool has a cordless sander.
How come you didn't buy the festtool sander?
One word: Price!
Rag 'n' Bone Brown how much did you pay for the mirka
Gamer97 it's in the video man
Jacob Porter thanks man
easy pad fix get a dynobrade pad slap it on bam easy and durable pad (this is what my father does and he makes high end solid surface counters)
Festool...Festool...Festool. Just bought their new cordless sander and it’s brilliant.
FestFOOL
Is that an oak hat stand upright behind you? They just won’t die!
Haha you must be a long term viewer! Yeah I’ve still got about two oak ones and 4 mahogany ones, will use them at some point
Rag 'n' Bone Brown Quite sure I have seen them all. Subscribed when you had under 10k
@@RagnBoneBrown Yes, but that's why they sell the hose and power combo, and run the power through their extractors. One tether, two functions.
Mirka has a huge problem with their Deros as more and more users experience malfunctions - especially with the electronics and the motor that gets floppy loose. ARE YOU LISTENING, MIRKA ??? !!!
That pad appears to be designed in a way that is similar to Festool's Multijetstream pad
holy cow you look red at the start of the video
I blame the sun
Easier to have two machines
Nope. There is absolutely no justification for a $600 palm sander.
It’s not for everyone
:)
Like marrying a beautiful woman ....only to find out after the wedding.....the biggest mistake of your life.....!!
just jim
Simple: one tether is better than two. Unless you tie the two together, but that's too much hassle when using multiple tools with the same hose
