Good morning Keith. I use Mirka pads but draw the line at the cost of their sander, preferring the versatility of my De Walt cordless tool and use a 2 ah battery for lightness. I discovered Rutland at the same time as Charnwood and have been happy with most of the kit purchased from them. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work 🌞
I’ve had my Mirka for 6 years - great sander and it;s done work above what it was designed for. Dust collection excellent. I justified the cost because I was fitting out a salon for my lad. Could I justify the cost now - doubtful. I did get the Mirka as a package with the vac at a very good price. Great and useful vid.
I bought my Deros 2 a few months ago and its had a big workout recently sanding a whole load of plasterwork. I was expecting this to be (a) very dusty and (b) very tiring, but it was neither, the dust collection is phenomenal and it was a dream to use. Yes it was expensive but I don’t regret the purchase at all. Price wise I shopped around and found a professional decorating company that was selling the kit which included 150 sanding discs in 3 different grits for £511, bringing the sander alone price down to about £400. Impressed by the Rutlands sander though, it performed great in your test. I’d probably still buy the Deros for the dust extraction and low vibration but the Rutlands is a great DIYer choice
Excellent video as always. I've just (last month) bought a baby DEROS II and absolutely love it. It was out of necessity to polish epoxy river placemats I sell on Etsy as I thought it would be an easier way of just sanding/polishing just the resin. It's a the Mirka DEROS 325CV 77mm sander so pretty niche and very limited options for sanders in this size format, it was the Mirka or a battery Milwaukee. Anyway, I will be expanding the Deros II family to include the one you have used in this video. I considered a Festool for a while but since having the baby DEROS it would be good to keep a single wire format and build a boom arm for it to feature on permanently.
Fantastic review Keith! Just purchased the Rutlands with the extractor package (which is honestly incredible I should add) - looking forward to using the sander!!
They sent me the extractor (I didn't ask for it and I'm not sure if I'll review it) but I'm actually very fond of it, for many reasons. It's the third tool of theirs I've tried and of all three, it's by far my favourite
I would be very interested in your thoughts on the extractor. I am quite tempted to pick up the bundle due to the cost saving. Is the filtration as good as they advertise? Any niggles with it at all?
@ I’m a massive fan, it’s by far the most powerful vacuum/extractor I have seen for the money and is a lot quieter than expected. Would massively recommend, haven’t done anything scientific on the filtration but it seems bang on to me
Thanks Keith, this seemed like a very balanced and fair review, it's a shame about the noise variation issue as otherwise it seems to stack up very well considering the price differential. Thanks also for returning to that subject to clarify, I was thinking the same - surely increased noise is likely to be associated with increased vibration so it's good to know you didn't feel this was the case ! Your reviewd are always helpful and just the right balance dealing with the issues whilst remaining fair, I can't think of anyone who does it better, so thanks again !
I was going to comment the same thing. Seems like the balance on my sander goes a little off when I’m on the edge of the workpiece as well. It’s a cheaper sander but the noise does change when I’m on the edge.
Great comparison. By the way, the Mirka Deros II 5650 with 100 discs is "only" £500 from the PowerToolMate site right now, best price I've seen it offered at. I just ordered mine. I also confirmed with them that despite the product images being of the original Deros, it is in fact the Deros II.
Another great review I think the mirka and Festool are really expensive but looking at that Rutlands I wasn’t sold on it ,would any of these expensive sanders make me do a better job no it wouldn’t ,would it make it an easier and quicker job yes it would like with the speed settings and the geared mode on the festool although festool wasn’t mentioned in the vid I do put that along side the mirka in terms of performance. Nice one 👏👏👏
I noticed it looks like you're switching up your extraction at the end of the video. I hope and can not wait for the video on this, I find it a huge challenge to find a powerful 240v extractor that doesn't take uo loads of space as I too have a small workshop and space/ functionality/ practicality is number one. I do enjoy all your videos especially the machine and tool comparisons.
At least in the few bits you showed, the Rutlands seemed to only make that noise when it went over the edges, could it be related to air flow increasing, or the air extraction pulling more air than "normal" (if you call never sanding an edge normal)?
Great Video as always Keith didn't know that the Mirka deros was a lot more expensive in the UK compared to Europe we can get it here in Germany with prices starting at 508€ that's equal to 425£ That's some difference gotta admit then in our case we don't have Ruthlands here in Europe so hard to compare with an equal brand just for reference the kit we looked at was the Mirka deros in a systainer with power cable and 2 sanding pads 125mm plus 150mm the new model like you have still 125£ difference in price is a lot Best regards from Denmark
I’ve always used ZALTEK orbital sanders but they’re hard to find in the UK. They’re a Bulgarian brand. The ZALTEK BRF119C pads are excellent as well and have dust extraction and last ages!
Well, nobody apart from you knows about that Bulgarian brand. Me, as a Bulgarian - have never heard of it, nor can I find it in the Bulgarian internet. …?
I was originally going to get the Festool EC150 as I have a Festool dust extractor but for the money the Rutlands is difficult to ignore. The only thing im concerned about is that in the Rutlands promotional videos the hose connector looks different to the one in your video and it looks to me like it would be less compatible. But its difficult to be sure so im not sure which one to get.
I'm currently looking at orbital sanders with a view to purchasing one very soon. I was trying to decide whether a 125mm or 150mm tool would be best so the Rutlands might suit me very well. I certainly can't justify the price of the Mirka since I'm an amateur DIY person with an average house and a boat to look after. I'd not previously come across the Rutlands sander so thanks for this excellent and thorough review. Much appreciated!
Fascinating. Looks like Rutlands quality is better than it was a few years ago. I think Bosch do a sander at a midpoint price between Rutlands & Deros. But that Rutlands price will let me wear out a few samples before I'm too old to bother and our children clear out our workshop. My Rutlands table saw... that is a disaster
Good review of both sanders and to my reckoning there wasn't much between them to bother me too much. For me the Rutland's won hands down purely based on price
Could you review the Rutland's nail gun please. It looks pretty good at its price point but does it have some similar issues to the last couple of Rutland's tools?
I don't understand why so few manufacturers have variable orbit sanders, like the DeWalt D26410 / Metabo SXE 450 (which are basically the same sander), where you can switch between 3mm and 6mm orbits just by pressing a button and turning the base. Or rather, maybe I do: this way they force some people to buy two sanders instead.
I’ve commented on your instagram but will reply here too. Really enjoyed the video. My only other experience of Rutlands tools is their powered respirator that I use for woodturning and it’s been excellent. I can’t thoil the Mirka so based on your review will happily purchase this.
I was literally about to buy the Rutlands sander but as soon as I saw their response to the completely not normal noises, I noped out of that decision faster than you can say "customer service brush-off".
Just to add, the response suggests that they are aware of the issue and are flat out denying it because to do anything else would require a product recall. If they thought it might be an issue with just your unit, they would suggest that you send it in. Shady, dismissive and not getting my money!
Must say Keith ive been looking at this for a while and unfortunately i can't afford the dros right now but based on that i may take a punt on the rutlands one. Would be interested if you ever get offered to look at there new variable speed 1/4 inch router 🤷👍🏴
Interesting. Obviously you do a lot more woodworking than the average DIYer, but what is more superior on these types of orbital sanders over the more traditional shaped ones you get in DIY stores? Is it just comfort and efficiency for larger areas? I have a cheap Mac Allister OS from B&Q and it worked well for me when stripping some French doors. Are these considered more for professionals? Also, what does the bit on the top of the sander do?
I would say comfort/ergonomics and speed. Sanding is such a boring and time consuming job, so anything that makes it more enjoyable is money well spent in my opinion!
@ I must be weird, I find sanding quite relaxing 😅 Like someone else said, for the casual DIYer / hobbyist, the Rutland’s one would be good value, so I do appreciate these kinds of reviews. I really wanted a top brand track saw some time back but I could not justify the expenditure really as it would only get used on occasion. Opted for a budget brand instead and it’s done me well so far. The likes of yourself, Peter Millard, Proper DIY and Skillbuilder are my go-to for tool reviews!
The problem with all these budget power tools both wired and battery tools is if anything goes wrong after the warranty period they are disposable. Why because you can’t get spare parts. On the plus side they are affordable
I'm surprised that you didnt mention the plastic gears in the Rutlands sander, which will wear down within a year or 2 of use, thats just the reality with plastic gears.
Looks almost identical to the MAXXT. The only difference is that the MAXXT is flat under the palm, like the Mirka. I picked one up on special for AU$150 (normally $200), which is about £80. Regardless of how it compares to the Mirka, Festool or 3M, I've found it to be significantly better than any of the upright-style sanders from DeWalt, Bosch, etc.
I have a Macallister mouse sander I bought from B&Q getting on 20 years ago and it still works fine. I have had my money’s worth and then some, probably a quid a year or less. Loud enough to wake the dead though.
Good video l like it but you sud contact mawaki tool for 2 random obit sanders because they have a 12v and a 18v and they are meant to be a copy off the marker sander as .
Dear "Ragnbonebrown" friend!, Thanks for your fine video on this sander... You just gave me what seems a perfectly good idea to modify my Makita BO6050, that has an exactly looking conterbalace than your new sander: Why not ADD that clever way to fine tune the balance of these kind of sanders? !!! Just drilling a couple of 1/8" holes close to the edge of the counterweight, and try different weight of screws until the residual vibration is tuned out!!!). In my case, as a just retired engineer now living on my pension, I wanted to maximize the Performance/price of all my tools, and when I got tired, desperately tired with my old Bosch 5" Random Orbit sander, with only about 370 watt motor, a too small 3mm orbit size and the common free-spinning excentrically mounted platter bearing, for finding it desperately slow for sanding or polishing larger than a desk size job, and learning about the really larger 6" sanders with twice the power (above 600 to 800 watt) and the powerful "Forced-Rotation" geared mode, that forcefully rotates the platter with gears, at the same time makes it do excentric orbits, I wanted "pne of those"... BUT, when checking the prices of several of them, had to stop!, as the Festool, the 3M, and the Mirka were way above my budget... But fortunately, I found a way less expensive Makita BO6050 at sale here in my country (Mexico), and I bought it immediately, and while IT IS NO "FESTOOL", and it has some brutish manners, and required me to learn its own "Learning Curve", after some four hours of taming the beast, I can say that it is a perfectly acceptable sander, albeit it is NOT as low profile as both of yours, and therefore it needs me to "learn" how to properly hold it, to avoid the lesser stability of its height... Now, thanks to your fine video, I will be trying the clever way to fine tune the conterweigh on my Makita, to get rid of the residual vibration that I could easily correct with the holes for screws on the end of that conterweight! Best Wishes from Mexico!
But what sort of brand is that Ruthlnds anyway? Certainly they don’t have producing capacity to make all those tools. I have a small, silent Ruthlnds air compressor, that looks every little bit like a Hitachi one. The difference is only in colour. So - obviously this is a licensed thing. And how about the other tools they offer? About Mirka - it is simply amazing. The comfort, the operation, the sanding, the dust collection. We have the venerable Mirka Ceros in the Worksop for 15 years. It is just unbelievable the amount of workload and abuse this thing has endured through those years…
I don't really see the appeal of these paddle sanders myself I'm a fan of on or off and being able toi change your grip without it stoping, same with angle grinders. That being said for me a sander is a means to and end, I bought a cheapo Erbaurer sander a few years ago, it seems to do the job and is pretty well made if a bit numbing after a while. For people who spend a lot of time sanding I think from a health perspective spending more money for lower vibes is probably smart.
A offer good grate video But you should contact mawaki tools Because they have got a new 12 volt random orbit Sunday And the 18 volt random or bit Sander And it's meant to be a copy of the maker dros as .
Why would you want to have a sander 'Bluetoothed!' Anyway I'm glad Rutland are trying to impact the tool industry with products that are a good price point (I used to buy my router bits from them) a bit like Evolution upping their game but seem to be at the Ryobi price points (I think Ryobi are a bit overpriced now) I have the Festool sander as I'm not a fan of 'paddle' sanders
@RagnBoneBrown why would anyone bother, I have it on Mt festool Sanders never felt the need to install the app only Bluetooth I have is for my extractor in the form of a on/off button for just hoovering without going to the unit
@RagnBoneBrown QUESTION!: Have you used the rebalancing feature ? And how much do the weight added to the counterbalance do add? (It gave me what seems a perfectly good idea to modify my Makita BO6050, that has an exactly looking conterbalace to your new sander... just drill a couple of 1/8" holes close to the edge of the counterweight, and try different weight of screws until the residual vibration is tuned out!!!).
Should we trust a Rutlands tool after their past poor quality products and customer service? That's the question here for me. The noise variation is also a red flag for me. If there is a random noise variation I am inclined to think this is because of a mechanical inconsistency within the tool but I could be wrong. Either way it's off putting. I wouldn't buy either of them tbh. One is f3om a questionable brand and the other just silly expensive. It's a sander!! I bought a titan for peanuts and it does exactly the job I want it to. When it packs up I will toss it in the bin and buy another. If I used a sander more then I would spend a bit more but I don't sand much. Thanks for the video and honesty.
Mirka are over priced and very costly to repair, there are no out of warranty repair centres in the UK, I have a Leros 950 that stopped working after very little use now its out of warranty it needs to go to Ireland for repair, if it's a problem with the main circuit board they quoted £250 not including man hours and postage to ireland for a huge parcel, it could easily cost £500 to fix, considering it cost £1100 to buy I'm feeling ripped off.
Gender is irrelevant, why shouldn't you enjoy what you like? I'm all blokey, into DIY and repairs, but choose decor and fabrics covered in flowers and butterflies. Get your mitts on a pile of power tools and do some damage! 🙃
When it breaks (and it will), good luck getting the Rutlands repaired / serviced. A poorly balanced motor and noisy bearings, who'd've thought! Use that for a year and the bearings will be knackered. I bet if you stripped it down you'd find it's no better than a £20 sander with a Deros look to it. While I wouldn't personally pay £550 for an orbital sander because the excellent Dewalt is less than £100, at leas the Deros will stand the test of time.
@@ashleycox432i cant see where Rutland fit in the market, theyre too expensive for hobbyists/DIYers and just lack the refinement and customer care of the established brands. Buy something from screwfix or TS and it doesn't work, just take it back and its pretty much replaced without question. All I've heard about rutland is completely opposite
@@RagnBoneBrown Yes. That seems right. We used "DA" sanders in the '60s that were dual action. They were air-driven and used in the body shop. They worked then, they should work now. Good point.
A 5 mm Orbit is a good balance between forceful sanding and fine polishing. My 5 year old Makita BO6050 has a 5.6 mm orbit size and that is the best orbit size... My older Bosch PE-12 AE has a all too common 3 mm orbit, and is only good for polishing, but too slow for sanding, desperately slow. The Makita also has the powerful "Forced Rotation" mode, which makes the platter to spin with gears connected to the motor, at the same time the platter does excentric orbits. In that mode, and with almost 800 watts motor, it is a "Real" sander, and by switching out the forced rotation mode, it is also a fine polisher!

Not sure I'd trust that Rutlands warranty either given my customer experience
You do this so well Keith. I am well provisioned, sander-wise, but I am now worrying that I am missing girth and power.
Thanks!
Would massively recommend, haven’t done anything scientific on the filtration but it seems bang on to me
@@samhouse8922 thanks for the review. I will probably pick up the bundle then.
What’s your thoughts on the Rutland sander having used it now?
Thanks Keith, this seemed like a very balanced and fair review, it's a shame about the noise variation issue as otherwise it seems to stack up very well considering the price differential. Thanks also for returning to that subject to clarify, I was thinking the same - surely increased noise is likely to be associated with increased vibration so it's good to know you didn't feel this was the case ! Your reviewd are always helpful and just the right balance dealing with the issues whilst remaining fair, I can't think of anyone who does it better, so thanks again !
Thanks so much
Fantastic testing and comparison, Keith! Thanks a bunch!!! 😃
I hope one of those gets here to Brazil!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! 👍
Fab comparison Keith. I love my Deros but man was it pricey. Glad there are a few out there at a lesser price point to give some competition.
I wonder if the noise on the Rutlands was worse near the edges of the workpiece - that's how it looked to my eye.
Cheers!
It seems to do it randomly... It's a bit odd. Rutlands did respond though (see pinned comment) 👍
Cheers, yes video coming soon on that 👍
At least in the few bits you showed, the Rutlands seemed to only make that noise when it went over the edges, could it be related to air flow increasing, or the air extraction pulling more air than "normal" (if you call never sanding an edge normal)?
That could very well be! Good eye!
Great Video as always Keith didn't know that the Mirka deros was a lot more expensive in the UK compared to Europe we can get it here in Germany with prices starting at 508€ that's equal to 425£ That's some difference gotta admit then in our case we don't have Ruthlands here in Europe so hard to compare with an equal brand
just for reference the kit we looked at was the Mirka deros in a systainer with power cable and 2 sanding pads 125mm plus 150mm the new model like you have
still 125£ difference in price is a lot
Best regards from Denmark
That's a good deal, maybe we should import them!! 👍
@ sounds like an idea 😉 I’ve gotta include Peter Millard in this will talk with him at the end of this month 😊
A sander with a Bluetooth app isn't the dumbest thing I've ever heard of but it certainly wins this month.
Apparently if your phone rings, but it’s on the other side of the workshop, you can answer it by talking into your sander 😂😂
Knowing when you’re reaching a level of vibration that leads to nerve damage feels worthwhile
A (poor) constant speed function could explain the noise variation ?
The hose connector pulls off 👍
Good review and comparison Keith!
Thank you!
What are you sanding? Large or smaller areas? 150 clears larger areas much quicker, however small projects and spaces can be an issue.
Would be good to see a test of the Rutland and Mirka against the 3M, Bosch, and Festool sanders
Haha nailed it with the "that's what she said"
Any more news on the noise variation, it’s stopping going for a Rutland to replace my now defunkt Deros
👍👍👍. Great review. Thanks Keith
Great review. Thanks for sharing
I’ve commented on your instagram but will reply here too. Really enjoyed the video. My only other experience of Rutlands tools is their powered respirator that I use for woodturning and it’s been excellent. I can’t thoil the Mirka so based on your review will happily purchase this.
Really useful video. Thanks.
Would be interested if you ever get offered to look at there new variable speed 1/4 inch router 🤷👍🏴
it seems that the noise gets louder when you sand clode to the edge
In practice, it does it randomly
FYI: Mirka had 8mm orbital sanders, not just 2.5 and 5mm ones.
That noise is a harmonic that is developing from the motor. They have to dampen it
I'm surprised that you didnt mention the plastic gears in the Rutlands sander, which will wear down within a year or 2 of use, thats just the reality with plastic gears.
I almost pulled the trigger on this last week. My finger is hovering again 🤣
Over which buy button, Rutlands or Mirka?
Looks almost identical to the MAXXT. The only difference is that the MAXXT is flat under the palm, like the Mirka. I picked one up on special for AU$150 (normally $200), which is about £80. Regardless of how it compares to the Mirka, Festool or 3M, I've found it to be significantly better than any of the upright-style sanders from DeWalt, Bosch, etc.
My sander was 25 quid from B&Q, been using it for 3 years, its fine.
Milwaukee?
I suppose the noise issue wouldn't matter if you're wearing ear defenders!
Yeah... Unless there's some kind of underlying issue creating the noise.
@RagnBoneBrown like tinnitus? 🤣🤣
Good review.
my mirka mk1 has been okay,,, it is a bit shitty build quality and is a bit weak. going for a festool next!
Thank you
But what sort of brand is that Ruthlnds anyway?
#enter, also a great video, love the fact that you are honest and don’t hide any imperfections
Instagram....
Where’s your dust extractor gone
I'm moving things about at the moment 👍
I think the vibration sensor gives good information about how well the sander is configured, but it's not a feature I'd ever use tbh
Tough chocie for rutlands or rhe other knock off you reviewed ages ago
It sounds like it could be resonance.
Just realized your based in Norfolk. Same here!
Same here !
you marked Rutland down twice for the same issue :(
Yes... As I explained 🤷♂️
the noise is when you take it over the edge of a panel
At 4x the price you would expect the Deros to be better in all areas
It pretty much is... Just not substantially so. Also it may last much much longer but there's no way of knowing without some serious years of testing
@@RagnBoneBrown Just keep in mind that the first generation Mirka did fail in numerous cases all too soon!
Why would a sander have Bluetooth how stupid just make a button.
How would a button give you vibration sensor information?
How come, I’m a girlie yet really enjoy your videos…….confused🤣
I watch some very random stuff on TH-cam too! 👍
Gender is irrelevant, why shouldn't you enjoy what you like? I'm all blokey, into DIY and repairs, but choose decor and fabrics covered in flowers and butterflies. Get your mitts on a pile of power tools and do some damage! 🙃
Needs more songs
🤣 maybe next time!
Rutlands looks more like the 3M
Dynabrade
When it breaks (and it will), good luck getting the Rutlands repaired / serviced. A poorly balanced motor and noisy bearings, who'd've thought! Use that for a year and the bearings will be knackered. I bet if you stripped it down you'd find it's no better than a £20 sander with a Deros look to it. While I wouldn't personally pay £550 for an orbital sander because the excellent Dewalt is less than £100, at leas the Deros will stand the test of time.
It has a 3 year warranty.... But I can't confirm whether the warranty service is good or not as I've never tried it
@@RagnBoneBrown They'll only honour it if they feel like it.
5mm orbit? Why bother? That seems too small.
It's a good balance between fine finishing and rough sanding
