    Good video Keith, I’m very happy with my Sealey DAS150PS (£200), it certainly doesn’t make that noise with a pad saver fitted. The cord was annoyingly short & stiff, so I converted it to a Festool plug-it connector 👍.

    Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing. I live in Minnesota where we have strong loyalty to 3M as almost all of us have a family relative that has worked there. I don’t think I would buy the 3M extract because it is a great first attempt but a second revision would be that much better. May not happen and the Mirka is a quality professional tool that seems very refined. The only reservation I have is costumer support which is difficult to really know because you cannot base it on hearsay from random people on the internet. If a button stops working I’d think they’d make it right.
    As an aside 3M’s air/pneumatic sanders are something I’d probably buy. Automotive industry has refined them over a few decades.

    I have a 3M Extractor sander like yours and can 100% confirm the loud noise and vibrations as you mentioned. It is so bad that I don’t feel comfortable turning it on up in mid air like you did as it gives me the impression it’s on the verge of breaking down with very loud noise and vibration (the two goes together). I don’t have a Mirka yet but after watching this video I’m planning to buy one. Thank you for the thorough review 👍

    I have to admit that given the video's title and your well documented challenges with the Mirka I was expecting a different result. That said I tend to agree with the key points you made in favour of the mirka. I chose Mirka for the dust extraction because anything less than the best I can afford is not good enough and noise. The fact it stops quickly and it's really comfortable were bonuses. I used a 3m on a community project I volunteered for a few weeks ago and found it to be a good machine - very effective on sanding old paint and I can see why the professional on the project who owned it liked its performance. On a busy noisy site it didn't sound out of place but 'hearing' the comparison in the video side-by side I know which one my neighbour would prefer when she's out in the garden and I'm spending an hour or two finishing in the workshop. K.

      Cheers Karl. Yeah I expected the opposite result too to be honest! I do wonder if the one I have hasn't been balanced properly or something, as it really is quite jerky. A bit disappointing! If I had a contact at 3M I'd be asking them to check it over!

    Nice review Keith. I bought a new sander in the middle of last year. I was using a cordless DeWalt (can’t remember the exact model) and it was so heavy and noisy. After a bit of research I went for the Festool ETS 150/5 which I got for €499 (similar or even a bit cheaper than the Mirka). My decision was swayed by the fact I bought a new Shop vac which was also Festool so the lack of a need for adapters was a plus for me. I’m honestly blown away by it. How quiet it is and also the speed at which it removes material. Dust collection is great also. Obviously comparing to,the old DeWalt is like night and day and I always wondered was it much different to the Mirka. Thanks as always for your content.

    • @ruben9912
      @ruben9912 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RagnBoneBrown gotta love that rotex.. I also use Mirka's and would like to get one of my own but the Rotex 150 with some rough paper is like a flap disk grinder for wood and with a switch of the knob and a new paper you're back to fine polishing. Heavy as it is, there is a reason it is so ubiquitous. If you haven't you should also take a look at makita's big belt sander, I've seen some old school pros use that thing effectively as a thicknesser, just having a dance with it.

    • @S7tronic
      @S7tronic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You should get on to Festool UK to send you one to test Keith. 👍
      I have an ETS 150/5 for the last 3 years, fantastic tool. The hard backer pad is much better than the stock one, and I switched to Abranet instead of the Festool Granat discs, way better.
      I am not a fanboy by any stretch, and when I upgraded my trusty old blue Bosch at the time, I also looked at a Mirka. I just don't like the paddle type trigger-the button on the front of the ETS is much better IMO; especially for longer sanding I find it's easier on my hands to be able change grip.

    Had my own Deros for 4 years, been using them for 7….zero issues aside from when one was dropped from height, fixed in 2 weeks under warranty. Have sanded entire (very large) floors with one in the past, on all day (8 hours) for 3 whole days as an example. Not the ideal way to do it obvs but that’s what I was told to do at the time. Never gets too hot, dust collection is the best going and most ergonomic to use, picked up an equivalent sized Festool recently the weight difference is mental, felt really heavy. Be sure you give them a very thorough clean like every 6 months, (preferably out of warranty if taking case off)helps with cooling if used for long periods of time. Easy to do with the provided spanner and a torx bit. Or else use a vac and blower to remove dust build up from any vented areas. Vid on here somewhere no doubt. All in, have zero reason to use any other brand!

    I purchased a MENZER ETS 150 Random Orbital Sander as could not afford the Mirka. Still not cheap bit I've found it wonderful to use, low enough vibration not to upset my faulty hand. And quiet enough to be drowned out by the dust extractor.

    Check your Deros manual for the section on balancing. You can remove the actual pad using the provided spanner and install a bolt or remove a couple of nuts. It's all in the manual and it's supposed to be set up different if you use the pad saver instead of just the standard pad.
    That being said, if the 3M sounds like that because of the Pad saver it must be built VERY poorly. Even without setting up the Mirka it never makes that sort of racket!

    When I first got my Mirka (I have 4) I put a Mirka pad saver on the 5” sander. After using it for a while the sander would shut off??? Called dealer they had me send it back for warranty repair. When I got it back service department said nothing wrong with it!? It kept cutting off for me?! Finally I looked at manual. If you use pad saver you must realign balance screws under sanding pad which I did and haven’t had a problem since.

    I have the extract sander and had the same unpleasant noise issue when I put the pad-saver on it.
    I had been using the sander for a bit while waiting for the pad saver to arrive in the mail so I took it back off and the sound went back to normal with a MUCH nicer tone, less vibration in my hand, and overall quieter.
    I strongly suggest comparing the extract with the pad saver on and off to compare the difference.
    For me, it was night & day.

    Does the Xtract have that same tone when its actually being used to sand? This is purely speculation but that sound when the Xtract is being run while you are simply holding it up sounds a bit like there is something loose and its rattling, making that extra noise. I'm wondering if the pressure against the sanding pad muffles that extra noise while actively sanding.

    I have the 6” version of the 3M Extract. It does not sound anything like the one in your video. I agree with you, if mine sounded like yours I would find it objectionable as well. Mine is quiet and sands beautifully. It may have something to do with the motor? In the states we use 120V 60 cycle power. In Britain your power is 50 cycle (?) thus requiring a different motor perhaps? Just a thought. Thanks for the review.

    Nice head to head mate. That 3M sander noise ain't right. I've had similar sometimes on my sanders when either my disc/sheet isn't holding well or my saver/disc is badly aligned. Either cause vibration at full chat. I've never used the 3M but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't design one that sounds like that. Maybe crack the nut holding the pad on too. The DEROS has gone up quite a bit in price recently out of nowhere. MSRP on them now is sitting around $750 USD. I'm kicking myself for not buying a couple of them 2-3 years ago when they were around $500. It's almost impossible to find them used anywhere, I suspect because they're so good no one ever wants to get rid of them.
    I'd be curious to try the 3M for myself, but having spent several years using the Mirka on a daily basis (Taylor Guitars' factory uses them exclusively and I worked there from 2021 until the beginning of this year), the Mirka really is the best sander I've ever used in my life.
    I'm mostly curious if you get good fine motor control with the 3M by changing pressure on the paddle with your palm like you can do with the Mirka.
