I met my wife in 2015. I went to her house in that same year and noticed that her neighbor had a Land Cruiser parked outside their house. While going through my wife’s photo album, I saw a picture of her when she was 4 playing outside her house. And in the background of that photo? That SAME damn Land Cruiser. My wife was 24 when we met… Toyota products are just built differently.
Toyota and Lexus seems to understand that they are caught in a hard place between evolving towards modern vehicles and avoiding fixing what’s not broken.
What a great way to put it. I was thinking along the same way. "What if I just want I to work? What if the difference between 14 and 19mpg doesn't honestly matter?"
Toyota still built vehicles prioritizing reliability more than anything else… but i think they’re caught up concerning fuel consumption… that’s why they have to modernize even though their formula is effective
I bought a ‘22 in July, I love it. Burns gas but it’s a “real” suv. Drove through that recent big winter storm from Chicago to Winter Park. It was unstoppable and I had the piece of mind that it wouldn’t leave me stranded. Which when you have little kids means almost everything.
I have a 16GX and I replaced the 18inch for 17in wheels, and was able to fit meatier Goodyear KO2s on it, and get rid the soccer mom tires. I get about 16mpgs maybe 19 if it's all highway, but its extremely capable in snowy conditions especially with a center diff locked. I drove it on a highway going 75mph on a complety snowed in road and not once did it show a hint of slipping or losing traction. In fact I passed wranglers patting along. With good off road tires these things are tanks in the worst conditions, extremely capable and very confident. Mine had crawl control and it feels better on snowy road then my wife's 4Runner.
I had a 2010 F150 until 2022. I started watching reviews and hearing all the great things about the GX460. So after watching your last 2020 GX “Suited for worlds end” video I decided to drive the GX and was so impressed with its smoothness and reliability. I purchased a certified 2021 GX and have been pleased with driving it everyday. It is capable on road and off-road in whatever weather conditions. It is quite, smooth, engine power is balanced for the vehicle, and I plan to drive it for the next 10 years… the price tags of new cars are outrageous and the dependence on electronics will be extremely complicatedly expensive. Mark and Jack you guys do awesome work. Thanks for the dedication to your channel.
If you mean the price to repair said electronics on new cars, the GX is no different. I was fortunately able to talk insurance into footing the bill if a $6500 repair on my GX when it had just 100k miles on it. It was due to a sunroof drainage leak that fried both the door harness and junction harness. Of course things like this can happen to any modern car with a sunroof, but it being a Lexus made it exorbitantly expensive to fix. One still needs to kee in mind that when buying *any* high end car that freak expensive things can come about, other than engine and transmission problems.
This video sums up why I can't let go of my 2006 V8 4Runner. Over 200K miles and its a tank! Interior has zero rattles. Only real maintenance has been 2 timing belts and oil changes. Best vehicle I have ever owned hands down!
I agree. Owned my '08 Limited for a year and a half now and was surprised I only had to change the rear brakes, timing belt, and some other important milestone maintenance. But it's pretty much bulletproof. It's important to meet milestone items regardless if they seem "fine", all you're doing is prolonging the life Vs putting off expected maintenance.
'08 limited V8 and fully agree. Also have added 2 LS430's. Toyota/Lexus products with UZ v8's may be the high point of reliability from any manufacturer. Interestingly I seem to like them more the longer I own them...kind of a reversal of my usual vehicle experiences.
418K miles on my 2004 V-8 4Runner Bought the 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner and returned it because I missed my V-8 so badly kid you not! Just put in a new timing belt recommended every 90K miles also new center differential actuator for the 1st time pricey repairs to do but worth it to me. Having had the truck in Salt free Florida has definitely elongated the frame life and lack of rust
if I reached US soon and find second gx that cost at least 50k, i would buy it but if lets say 60k+?,... ummmm im thinking about 4runner limited if thats the case
Bought a 2023 GX two weeks ago. Coming from Marc and Audi, this has an analog world that is a breath of fresh air. I still own and Audi, but I look forward to driving this one with it old school gauges, comfort, drivability, etc. It's just an amazing all arounder.
@@Rocket9944 Can't do that to my baby! It's a 4 year old convertible that I purchased new and has less than 40k miles. I take excellent care of it maintenance-wise and use AMMO products to keep her sparkling. I'll keep her until 80k or so then see what's what.
@@jmartin2778 , 4 years old, I'd get rid of it ASAP , you can still get something decent for it and before it starts having all kinds of issues. Personally I think Audi is a silly car brand but that's just my opinion.
As a recently retired software engineer, I've learned over time that complexity breeds bugs/problems. I really appreciate the keep it simple stupid and if it ain't broke don't change it approach. With that said, 2022 gx tech and safety systems update was badly needed 8). This doesn't get talked about enough but the Tahara plant produces some of the best quality and problem free cars in the world. mark, you triggered me to goto my local tucson lexus dealer and buy a 2023 gx new arrival in silver/red combo (non blackline). 🙏
Here in New Zealand I drive a 1995 Land Cruiser with 480k km's, full mechanical turbo diesel, just went on a 3000km off road tour of the south Island in it, crossing numerous rivers, up mountain passes, through forest etc. with no issues whatsoever. Did the equivalent of 18mpg as well fully loaded up. I'll be keeping this one for a loooong time.
I remember getting into a Lexus for the first time and being blown away. My parents had used beater cars from the 80s when i was a kid. I've never lost that love and appreciation for the brand.
Have you been any other luxury brands since…? Lol. Even as a kid with no knowledge or care of cars I always felt like they were just a Toyota and not a luxury car when I was in one. Today it’s even worse with literal economy brand performance and interior and infotainment that is decades behind the other luxury brands
@TheRidersChoice thanks for shaming me for being poor as a kid lol. I've been in other luxury cars now and agree with your points on Lexus currently. At 18 though I'd never been in a car with leather seats. I can remember being blown away by the speedometer being back lit and being bright white instead of yellowish green. It seems ridiculous now but at the time it was the nicest car I'd ever been in.
@@jesserhodes7430 that’s the thing about Lexus. It just adds leather over a Toyota! Like I wish I could get a BMW with a cloth interior. So just adding leather and not making the rest of the interior or infotainment is such a loss for me. Since leather has no value to me in the luxury experience, Lexus always felt like “wow, this is just a toyota”
I just bought a GX 460 2023 , I love it, I live in California so I don’t have to worry much about the rust, only the gas but I really don’t care because driving this thing it’s a blissful of a moment…. excellent video guys..
You did well by buying the 460 and avoiding the new 550! The older 460 rides like a cloud, engine is so smooth and if you take it easy on the accelerator you can get decent gas mileage too!
I'm truly impressed with Mark's ability describe the character and characteristics of a car, without having to own it! Mark or Jack never owned a GX yet this review was completey spot on about the GX, this is exacrtly why I bought one as a work horse, alongside a former AMG and now an M5 as my "fun" cars. It's impressive how they are able to "understand" the car, the why behind it and be so articulate about it. This is only solidified my trust and interest in their reviews. I don't get to drive as many cars as they do, so I don't have any impressions of cars that I've never owned. So this was very interesting to watch as an owner, and they hit the nail on the head. I respectfully disagree on some of the things they said about M5, but i understand where they come from. It's almost maddening watching other car reviewers and seeing them completely miss the mark about the car and essentially talk some nonsense opinion of theirs.
@@sunflash101Normal job like everyone else, I was just single and I bring home about 80-90k after taxes a year. I bought an E63S during Covid lock down for a big discount and earlier in 2022, I sold it for the same price that I bought it and, bought an M5 for MSRP, had to add 20k, which I just took out a 3 year loan for. Essentially 2 cars for the price of one these past 2 years. And l disagree what they said about the M5 Comp, yes its not as dramatic as the E63S, but trust me I still look back at it when I park and still have a huge green on my face when I drive it. I bought a used 2016 GX in 2021 as a daily/utility vehicle, also its my forever car. It's got almost 80k miles on it now, I do all the maintaince myself on it and not even slightly wortied thats it well past its warrant now. I wish you can keep the M5 or AMG past their warranty period, it's essentially a huge gamble and risk once those cars start to get to 100k and above. And I got a GX not cause it's a Lexus. I didn't know they even existed in fact. I just needed a reliable body on frame 4x4 for the winter. So naturally I was looking at 4Runners, and lo and behold since GXs depreciate more, I saw a 2016 GX being sold for the same amount as a 2016 TRD Off Roaf 4runner with the same miles, no kidding. Except GX had premium Audio, 3 zone climate control, heated back seats, heated steering ect. I didn't care about soccer mom looks so it was a no Brainer.
@@sunflash101 100-120k annual can easily swing a 2k mortgage, utilities, upwards of 100k in car notes or more, with money to bank... and significantly more toys if you're in a dual income household.
@@sly9263 Yep, a lot of people love cars and can relate to them. But very few can presenters like these guys. You need to be very articulate in describing the car, asking the right questions and answering them and being objective vs just saying it's fast or its fun.
Peace of mind in the disposable world we live in. I have a 2019 and absolutely love the solid feel of the truck. The V8 is so smooth that it reminds me of my dad's Buick station wagon. As far as not having Apple Car Play, which I've found buggy on our previous Honda products, the Blue Tooth system just works. All of the time. I listen to Audible, with Waze overriding, or the Sat radio, and make phone calls, all hands free. When I forgot my phone the other day, the onboard navigation was a fine backup. It hauled my wife, our 3 kids, and 5 large suitcases to the airport for the holidays, and can easily pull the boat up a steep, slippery ramp. Gas mileage has been 16 to 18 mpg per tank, depending on who has been driving it. It is much easier to park compared to full size SUVs. The rear view camera could be better shielded and have better lowlight performance. Pretty much my only complaint. Maintenance costs have been moderate.
And the new infotainment system is pulled from the IS, which has both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, albeit wired - that quibble is now solved. Ironically, like you, I end up using bluetooth more than AA - AA does some weird things to audio apps, and I prefer the bluetooth route.
Recently picked up a 2010 with 120k and love it, my 5th Lexus. 95% the same as my pops 2019, and very capable especially with a mild lift. On the road or off and especially in inclement weather it just feels solid and capable. The truck is dated, but has everything you need and nothing you don't. My 12 mpg commute is offset by the wifes 45 mpg ct200h. Other than basic maintenance and maybe a coolant leak repair, this will last for decades.
Nice!! Was waiting for this from you guys since the center console update. I bought a ‘23 Lux package couple months ago, and am so in love. Essentially the final “new” V8 Toyota truck left, and I’ll gladly never sell her. Cheers 🍻
The same thing with me! I could have waited another year for the brand new GX 550 Twin turbo V6 or go with the 2023 V8- the tried & true V8 won my emotions and it is cheaper and simpler than the new 2024 model. Live the V8 every time I drive it! The new GX 550 is not a proven platform yet!
I have driven my GX a dozen 1,000 mile days. I can set the cruise at 95mph and just go. Its comfortable, and I know my 10 year old GX has at least 10 more years left. It was expensive, but its stupid simple , and I can replace the rusted parts with the 22 parts, and they all fit. I love my GX.
I feel like we're entering, or are already in, the "Great Era of Unreliability" caused by these new complex hybrid systems being rushed out due to government mandates regarding MPG. It's ironic that as soon as the industry seemed to have finally reached a point of solid reliability in automotive design in the late 2010's, everything got thrown in the trash for the new hybrid systems to satisfy mandates. Add this to the obsession with computers, screens, and sensors, and we're driving something that's more disposable than something 10 years ago. We're going backwards. It's depressing. I'm glad to see Lexus stayed true to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." design so I can buy one of these used for $30k in 20 years.
We have 2 GX (2015 and 2021) and 1 LX (2020) and we aren’t planning on upgrading anytime soon for the turbo change engines. The 2015 GX (8 year car and 180k miles) and we had no issues at all. Not even one day at the mechanic shop, since I do my own oil changes and transmission drain and fill.
I have a 2017 GX Premium with 119k miles. Had an ATF service and a few other things so the dealer gave me a 2022 loaner. Drove the same. And I mean EXACT SAME. Not a single additional rattle/sound/vibration in my 6yr old, 119k mile GX. THAT is luxury. Mark and Scott get it. They really do. I'll be adding another GX or an LC200 in the next year or two. Oh and I average 16.5mpg while driving like a tool, in traffic. Premium, top tier gas, 5k oil changes. 60k ATF services. Easy. 👍😎
My 2007 GX is still going strong. Other than replacing the catalytic converters, the most expensive maintenance was tires. As far as rot goes, having the undercarriage coated goes a long way. The only modern tech I long for is adaptive cruise control. When I do finally replace it, I will simply choose a later model V8 GX.
Rustproofing is mandatory in the Salt Belt if you want the body to last as long as the mechanical components. Neglected unibody vehicles rot just as quickly when neglected.
My wife has a 2020 GX. She freakin loves it. That V8 Is silky smooth, no lack of passing power. The full time 4WD is awesome. She said she’s is going to run it to the ground. It’ll last 20-25 years.
Absolutely nailed why we bought our 2022. To me, luxury is comfort and reliability. This has it in spades. It feels like it will survive an apocalypse. I don't need a ton of tech or complicated systems. I need something that will start every time, not light the dash up like a Christmas tree and comfortably transport me wherever I'm going, even if there's not a road. This, I believe, is one of the last great Lexus vehicles.
Ordered my 2022 GX Black Edition when they were first released and absolutely love it, so glad I waited and got what I wanted. My 4th Lexus and absolute favorite. Toyota rides, Lexus glides!!!!
Reason I bought my 22 GX. I’ve owned 5 Toyota vehicles and 6 Lexus SUVs and all have been reliable. The GX460 is the last of a breed. Not only because of the V8 but also the build quality. They don’t make them the same anymore!. Just look at the new Tundra!.
We own a 2017 GX460. Probably my favorite vehicle ever right next to our now retired 530xi wagon- another last of its kind perfected car that always did what we asked if it. Now all of our other cars are electric and will replaced every five years or so. But we hope to keep the GX for 500k miles plus.
We have a 2011 GX460, its been in our family since new. And it has been unproblematic, it has 154 thousand kilometers which is roughly mid 90 thousand miles. It has never been rust proofed, and its got some rust underneath but it keeps on trooping. To see that the GX460 is largely unchanged is crazy, a new artifact of the past. Great video guys, fully addresses everything on the truck.
I own a '97 LC (335k) and will probably 'upgrade' to a GX460 like this when I get tired of solid axles and the I6. If I wait, with 80 Series values going up, perhaps I'll be able to trade straight across for one of these in 10 years. My father-in-law has a '99 LC with 375k on it, so you're speaking our language. Very happy to be a Patreon supporter now with these little tidbits of straight talk from you guys. Thanks for your continued great work and perspective on the 'real world' of cars and SUVs.
Well said guys! We were so close buying a Q7…when that deal fell apart our back up was a GX. Things happen for a reason and what u all are explaining is the exact reason why we are so glad we got a 2023 gx. And we live in texas so gas prices don’t really phase us vs living in a price gouging gas state
Sorry for repeating myself on GX videos but I traded my '14 GX for a '14 LX and the GX was gone within hours of being listed at the Mercedes dealer. The salesman was blown away how easy it was to move vs the usual drudgery of selling MB products. Out-of-state buyer took it sight unseen. I since traded the '14 LX for a '17 LX, and it's the right blend of tech and reliability and I'll be driving it until I don't need to drive anymore. Put in an aftermarket Apple CarPlay/Android Auto box and it does everything I want it to and other things I'll never need it to do. The GX will always make me smile, my in-laws parents once commented on how safe they felt when I took them to the airport during a Seattle snow/ice storm through the hills and highways. No better approval for me!
Still driving my 2004 GX-470 after 250K miles. What a great return on an investment! Will probably by another one when my final does die. Thanks for the great review.
I've been looking for a family car and researching a bunch of different vehicles for the last year or so. Finally landed on this exact car/trim. Can't wait to buy something that I know will be around at least until my kid graduates college. Such a great all arounder. Thanks for the great reviews as always guys.
@@GarthGoldberg No thanks, I'm good. When bands come out with new albums I think I'm like one of a dozen people that still buy the CD. So I have a big collection of all the "trash" I like to listen to.

Bought a 2020 Luxury with the sport package (Captain's Chairs!) for my wife last year with 65k on it. We don't give 2 shits about the MPGs. We bought it because it has all the luxury you could possibly need, is the most reliable used vehicle in the US, has great off-road capabilities for bad weather, and still looks good. Added some 18" fuel rims and all terrain tires. My wife couldn't be happier. Our other truck is a 2004 4runner v6 Limited named Sharon. Has 245k on her and still drives brand new :)
Say hi to Sharon for me, please. I am really thinking on getting one, my first Lexus. My lease is almost done on my Cherokee. I was thinking on moving to the new Grand Cherokee, but this one calls me. I might just buy it and keep her for many years. All the tech in other cars just brings trouble and running to the dealers.
Happy, thus far, owner of a new 2023 GX460. I put down my kidney for it, along with the equity I had from a 2022 GLC AMG43 that I traded in. Per the last review here at Sg, I want to be launched into space with my GX in the future. That's why I bought it.
The secret to the GX is to buy it off lease. Lightly used in southern markets (i.e. no road salt) these regularly sell 3-4 years old under 30K miles around $40K. These trucks, on the used market, are criminally cheap compared to 4Runners and FJ's.
I love 4Runners but there was no way I was going to pay more for a same age, same mileage used 4Runner. I've had my '18 GX for 2 years now and love it as much as the day I got it.
2019s here on the west coast w 36k or less miles $45k+. Anything 2020 (new steering wheel and display) $50k+. 2021s are still mid-high $50s - albeit 15k or less miles on those. That said, they were $58k new, so effectively zero depreciation...
Great review guys! I am 6 months into my first Lexus, a ‘22 IS350. If you read the reviews on that people bash it till no end, old tech, old drivetrain, blah, blah, blah…Thank you for your realistic review of the GX, not everyone wants/needs the latest and greatest tech and exactly what you said, overcomplicating things. Dependability, tried and true, seriously considering as my next SUV.
Would you guys ever do a video on an 'older' land cruiser? Like a 60 or 80 series? It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on one of the older models, and how it'd compare to modern SUVs.
I own this trim in the nori green color 2022 ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I took a hard look at the new defender but the fact that JLR builds the defender was enough to get me to purchase the GX. At 40 years of age I don’t want any problems from a vehicle.
@@Bearded1 Thats awesome, the 22 is preferable for me because the interior on the 23 is to lite. I prefer the darker interior easier to keep clean since I have a young child. Enjoy that tank my friend, you made a wise decision.
Same thing with me! I could have waited and waited and waited for the new GX 550 and I would be very disappointed too. The new GX 550 is backlogged 6-12 months, it is at least $5K more expensive, the engine is very complicated and might have serious problems, the interior is not as lush as the GX 460, etc.
Thank you for explaining the KDSS. It gives you sway control on the exit ramps and great vertical wheel travel to keep all of its paws on the ground in uneven terrain. Not a poseur.
That's what bugs me about the Armada. The world market Patrol on which it's based features Nissan's hydraulic body motion control system, similar to KDSS. However it's not available on the Armada and only comes on the very top and very rare, $85k Sensory trim of the QX80.
Car safety progresses light years every decade. Enjoy the money saved driving a old jalopy that gets 13 mpg since you’ll have to spend it in hospital bills down the road with 8000 lb electric trucks that can go 0-60 in 3s. I wouldn’t want to be in this top heavy dinosaur
@DOGS LOL absolutely. Roads are becoming an arms race at this point. These trucks are going to be super dangerous, not to mention inefficient. Regardless, I wouldn’t buy a car as a daily thinking 20 years from now because who knows what features will be available and what others are driving.
Thank you Toyota! Just when I thought I was gonna throw out my CD-holder on my sun visor, you went and showed us that there is no need to do so. I just wish it still came with a tape-deck.
Glad to see you two have come around from your "looks like it's from 1871" opinion. There's a reason the 4Runner has grown massively in popularity and the GX 460 is just a luxury 4R with a V8 (and a horridly massive front grille). The 4R Off Road Premium or TRD Pro will run you $50-$55k, so buying a slightly used GX in the low $40's, chopping the bumper and throwing on a lift gives you an equally impressive off road rig with full time 4WD (amazing in the snow) for less money.
@@savagegeese Agreed, but I do find hope in Toyota dragging their feet to update the 4R and GX460. Hope that they won't walk away from what makes those two trucks great. Hope that they can blend old and new like a master winemaker. In the meantime, I'm going to buy one of these two to hedge my bets.
It’s kind of nice hearing an automotive journalist praising simplicity and reliability and not praising these new disposable cell phone like cars they are building now… thank you.
This video helped me decide. to purchase a 2023 GX. Most expensive vehicle I've owned but I don't regret upgrading from a long history of growing up and owning 4runners.
I went from a 4th gen 4runner to a GX and I think the upgrade in ride quality and more powerful engine are worth the extra cost, especially if buying used. The ride in the GX is much improved, especially on the interstate, and towing a 22ft boat is far more comfortable with the GX. The only thing I wish I had in my 2015 model is adaptive cruise control.
I am surprised you felt the difference in power between them. Maybe when towing it is more apparent. 22 foot would have been right near the 5000lb limit on the 4Runner.
@@Steven-xj2rf I was surprised at the difference myself. I think you're right about being close to the limit on the 4runner. That little bit of extra torque with the V8 gave me the headroom I needed for big hills or merging on the interstate with a trailer.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD thanks for the heads up! Hopefully it's something that can be sorted. My wife's accord has both adaptive cruise and lane assist and I find both to be great for longer road trips.
Excellent points about the long term benefits of a normally aspirated engine and a conventional auto trans. Technology is great....but when it comes time to make repairs it can and will be expensive.
I know you guys aren't into podcasts as you've got enough on your plate already, but aside from the occasional live streams you do, this is perhaps the most podcast-like review video you've done. Just letting you know that I appreciate the candor and the perspective. Not sure if the GX470/Land Cruiser Prado J150 is long for this world, but people probably ought to snap them up while they can. In addition to the famous Toyota reliability, Land Cruisers are built to last 25 years while most other cars are built to last 10 - they really don't make them like they used to.
Great video. your 2020 video made me buy my 2021 GX 460. I now have 15k miles on it and love it. You are right , this vehicle is BOMB PROOF. You can feel it when you drive it. Thank for the followup video on the GX. You guys give an honest review.
Test drove Toyota Land Cruiser Black Edition last month, loved it. Basically the same car, but with Toyota badge and a diesel engine. I think it had older infotainment though, which is something I really don't care about. Amazing visibility, comfortable, reliable. Dealer told me that if I ordered one in December 2022, I would get it in September 2023, assuming no surprise delays. Second lowest spec "Luxury" without all the fancy stuff.
Such a great review, guys. Statistics don't lie......period. Record show, this truck is a tank, by all means. many people do 250K or more and never touch engines. This GX is an animal. If I had 65K to spare, I would walk into a dealer and order one, just as is. No BMW, no Audi, No Land Rover. GX as simple as that. Also, if I am not mistaken, 23 is the last year for them.
I have heard some horror stories from Lexus mechanics about the new V6 Twin Turbo engines and engine mounts. The V8 N/A engine is just fine and proven.
@@edmundcharles5278 Over played. It’s a small batch of awful junky built new Tundras & some bad components on the turbo 6 in some. But rare. The bigger issue with the newer models & newer GX is now the tinny feel and still shaky, shuddering driving dynamics since Toyota’s truck division refuses to advance past a 1986 design or look at competition.
Five Toyota's in my lifetime, licensed at 14. '74 corolla, lasted through high school. 84 celica, lasted through the military and college. 1998 corolla, totalled by a red light runner, replaced by a used 01, ran that to 180k miles, sold for 80% of what I paid for it, and replaced with a lightly-used 06 corolla, now with 160k. Pretty good for a total investment of under $20k.
Ok. I've had the same refrigerator for a long time too. Great appliances for us. It came in the house when I bought it. Never owned one Toyota unless you consider the FRS. It was pretty cool too.
Its damn good if you have driven. No flashes, no colourful, just delivers smooth ride with reliability. Own 2021 with offroad packages, love every time i drive.
I just purchased a 2023 GX460 and we love everything so far. I had a lot of problems with the new GMC Denali so we decided to go back to having not just a car but a great car.
Even though the KDSS system is hydraulic, it does not prevent it from seeing failure as witnessed in the 4runners. It is an expensive system to fix, and anytime it fails, ppl convert to Bilstein shocks. Then we got the starter motor location where you have to remove the exhaust manifold to get to. The exhaust manifolds tend to form cracks and leak after awhile. Time will tell how reliable the new TT engines are.
DR KDSS sells a switch and wiring kit that lets you turn off kdss for driving on bumpy roads faster than 12mph. If the KDSS ever has an expensive failure, it can be deleted.
When you live in africa and want a some luxury nothing beats this. As for old ways is best. In south africa the old way body on frame is the only way. Thanks for the cool video and channel am a big fan.
My dad drives his 2001 Landcruiser 200 4.2 turbo diesel everyday. 514,000 miles on the clock and you can rely on it to start every single day. An incredible vehicle really considering how hard it's life has been and how moist our climate is.
I have the 22 GX BL. The 23 comes with the 360 camera, it was not an option in 22 BL. The GX customer is a bit older and it really works for this demographic. I wish it had less tech not more. Lexus 'stopped sale' on the hitch for the GX since Oct 2021, Why?
I bought a 2018 GX460 for its reliability and durability. It was stolen about a year ago, driven to the closest seaport, loaded on a ship and taken somewhere where they really value this car for its reliability and durability - and don’t necessarily have the tools available to fix modern cars.

This would be a great buy, if it would only fit in my basement garage parking space. I wish Toyota retains some of these traits which made these have such great longevity on the next gen models.
This reminds me a lot of my 08 grand cherokee. The older 5.7 hemi without VVT, a 5 speed, solid rear axle, 2 speed transfer case, LSD's front and rear, 7200lbs towing. It gets 15 mpg on a good day but it just keeps going. Had a fuel pump go bad and a few tiny electrical issues here and there but honestly its been a dream for the most part. I don't really want anything new because its all way too much. Only thing I'd wanna try and do is try and replace the old first gen uconnect system with an aftermarket one that has android auto and I will drive that jeep into the ground. I have an ioniq for commuting and being an older, much less complicated EV that thing will probably drive into the ground too. Simple cars are honestly the best ones and no amount of luxury will compensate for the luxury of not getting stuck on the side of the road or worse
I just bought mine - Also, a minor correction the black line is limited to *3,000 units in the US. I love this vehicle so far, you can tell how well made it is.
I bought a new 2004 Tundra dbl-cab and I never thought that 18 plus years and well over 200,000 miles later, I would still be driving it almost daily. The V8 in it is still as smooth today as it was one-hundred-thousand miles ago.
I've been nothing but happy with my 2022 GX460 Starfire Pearl Black Line Edition after ~5500 miles now. They've finally release the OEM Class IV tow hitch for it after putting it on Stop Sale back in 10/2021...I'm still not sure what's take then so long but oh well I guess. The only thing I've done is put on a set of OEM sized Falken Rubitrek XL tires, and a full set of Bud Built 3/16" stainless (powder coated black) skid plates. I'm getting 12-14mpg towing a 3500lb trailer in the winter, 19-22mpg with mixed driving in the summer, and 17-19mpg with mixed driving in the winter here in Nebraska. It's going to be sad when the GX550 comes out and the V8 goes away 😒
@@reyperez3424 Everyone will get different mileage depending on how and where they drive. Do they have lots of hills, is it windy, is it cold, what are their tire pressures, what tires do they have, etc. I really don't care if you believe me as that's what I get for mileage and I'm completely happy with it. They were getting 14mpg in the video because they were hammering on it constantly. I live in Nebraska and it's relatively flat here so I'm going to get much better mileage than someone that lives in Denver. Also, it's the EPA *average* that 's listed...average. That means some will get better and some will get worse mileage than advertised.
Jamie I’m driving conservatively too with my 22 GX and getting 21-22 mpg on the hwy. Most people drive with a heavy foot and wonder why they get lousy mileage.
Great- there appear to be some issues with the V6 Twin Turbo engine and engine mounts in the other Toyota vehicles. I hope the new GX 550 does mot have these issues, still I wanted the last V8 GX that they were going to make. I am most happy with m y purchase.
I went through 2 G500s, X5s, Land/Range Rovers, Nissan Patrol, so on and so on, and ended up in a Lexus GX. This is what a proper car guy buys once they’ve been through it all, a simple, reliable, capable, comfortable and well built car like this one. Luxury became not having to worry about anything.
KDSS does have electronics it has an ECU and electronic solenoid. It electronically activates around 12mph. This is essentially a KDSS "on/off" switch that is indeed electronically controlled. After that it's all mechanical.
....that a CD player? I've heard about those things. they were like physical Spotify playlists or something. cool. would definitely be useful when you're off roading and there's no signal.
Wow are physical digital media so foreign to people that you wouldn't just play tunes off your phone memory or a USB drive? Maybe I'm just behind the times but wow
I have a '14 FJ Cruiser with the even more bomb-proof 1GR-FE engine. Once you get used to Toyota reliability, its hard to buy anything else. The peace of mind is hugely underrated
I never understood until I got older and didn’t want to fix my old cars all the time. Now I own a Hilux and I can’t see myself driving anything else but Toyota. I convinced my mom to trade her VW for a Lexus CT hybrid. Best decision ever. Even my uncle who is stuck on Mercedes is now driving a Hilux and loves it
Make sure to keep up with transmission fluid change every 50k miles or so. I also had a Fj cruiser. Transmission went out at 196k but a shudder started at 80k miles. Just do a single drain and fill every 50k and you’ll be golden.
Again? This has r changed in a decade why review same thing every year
Because the HVAC controls are different.
It's more of a comment on Toyota new offerings vs the gx.
Because this is the last year to review the best most dependable vehicle in production and worth reviewing again.

If you’ll keep doing these reviews Toyota will keep this car forever.:)
Nine years later, I still daily my 2013 Land Cruiser. It has 165k miles on it. It’s still tight as a drum. No wiggles, no creeks, no rattles.
No battery life or range anxiety to worry about. Can last another 300k-400k without any issues.
AMEN! I have a 2017 w/22k miles. 😂
I drive my wife’s 20 GX more than mine because, it’s drives SO much nicer!!!

Sad to see that changing now.

that's a great story, thanks for sharing bro
You need to have the wife go back and see if her old neighbor would sell her the truck
14mpg is broken.
Government regulation is what's broken.
Toyota still built vehicles prioritizing reliability more than anything else… but i think they’re caught up concerning fuel consumption… that’s why they have to modernize even though their formula is effective
@ If you’re looking to buy something like this than 14mpg doesn’t matter
I bought a ‘22 in July, I love it. Burns gas but it’s a “real” suv. Drove through that recent big winter storm from Chicago to Winter Park. It was unstoppable and I had the piece of mind that it wouldn’t leave me stranded. Which when you have little kids means almost everything.
It's such a reliable vehicle.
Good purchase
Aw man. Part of the experience of childhood is being stranded on an 80mph highway in the middle of nowhere.
@@GXMAN16 so true, they are tanks!
Can you share us the price, monthly insurance and whether you have downpayment. Tnx
Really silly to CPO one of these. Get one a bit older. They last forever, its a waste of money
Same video, sold my 2009 Ford Expedition limited for a 2019 GX460 Luxury. Will keep until I fall apart.
How is the truck
418K miles on my 2004 V-8 4Runner
Bought the 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner and returned it because I missed my V-8 so badly kid you not!
Just put in a new timing belt recommended every 90K miles also new center differential actuator for the 1st time pricey repairs to do but worth it to me.
Having had the truck in Salt free Florida has definitely elongated the frame life and lack of rust
2007 Limited 4x4 V8 just went to West from Midwest, brilliant in ❄️
if I reached US soon and find second gx that cost at least 50k, i would buy it but if lets say 60k+?,... ummmm im thinking about 4runner limited if thats the case
Bought a 2023 GX two weeks ago. Coming from Marc and Audi, this has an analog world that is a breath of fresh air. I still own and Audi, but I look forward to driving this one with it old school gauges, comfort, drivability, etc. It's just an amazing all arounder.
Traded in my 2022 GLC 43 with 8k on the clock, that had a bad LED headlight assembly for a '23 GX460. The GLC lost lots of value. The GX is a keeper.
2023 should be the best of them all, essentially it's been 13 years of them working out all the kinks in an already hyper reliable engine.
Get rid of the Audi while you can still get something for it
@@Rocket9944 Can't do that to my baby! It's a 4 year old convertible that I purchased new and has less than 40k miles. I take excellent care of it maintenance-wise and use AMMO products to keep her sparkling. I'll keep her until 80k or so then see what's what.

Please report back at 265,000 .
I know when I was younger having used simple cars, one time I had to move a Lexus and it was so smooth I couldn't figure out if the car was on or off.
Mate, you bought a GX, some AMG, and a M5? What do you do as a job? Lol

I have a grom vline2 in my 2010, carplay for $500 and works pretty well. May be available for your 19 as well.
And the new infotainment system is pulled from the IS, which has both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, albeit wired - that quibble is now solved. Ironically, like you, I end up using bluetooth more than AA - AA does some weird things to audio apps, and I prefer the bluetooth route.
Onboard nav was fine? What if it fails? Well; what about a good old paper map, right!

@@KakerMix that's exactly it.
It’ll last 20-25 years.
such a durable car
I bought an '87 fj60 about 5 years ago, fixed it up and sold for $34k. Replaced it with an 06 GX for $12k with 120k miles. I can do this forever.
If we never repeated ourselves, TH-cam comment sections would be empty . Best of luck with the LX. 😁

I bought a brand new '22 GX in September. It is a beast and will stay in my family until I die.
Happy, thus far, owner of a new 2023 GX460. I put down my kidney for it, along with the equity I had from a 2022 GLC AMG43 that I traded in. Per the last review here at Sg, I want to be launched into space with my GX in the future. That's why I bought it.
Wow, jack and mark having a philosophical conversation, love the concept. Sometimes less is more, in this case for this vehicle true.
That discount price was certainly the case before the supply chain crisis. Does it still hold true?

Loving my 22’ Premium! 32” AT wrapped around Volks was all it needed👌🏻
Oh and I changed the exhaust… LONG LIVE THE V8 🎉
I still have my 2004 GX! I really like the way that it drives and it has served me very well over the years. Amazing how much has stayed the same.
It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on one of the older models, and how it'd compare to modern SUVs.
seconded
Or 100 series
I own this trim in the nori green color 2022 ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
I took a hard look at the new defender but the fact that JLR builds the defender was enough to get me to purchase the GX. At 40 years of age I don’t want any problems from a vehicle.
Same bro, flew down to GA from NC to grab a 22 BLS in Nori Green. I love it. Just wish it had the camera updates they did for 23
@@Bearded1 Thats awesome, the 22 is preferable for me because the interior on the 23 is to lite. I prefer the darker interior easier to keep clean since I have a young child. Enjoy that tank my friend, you made a wise decision.
@@freshdotholla you too bro
What you guys said is why I bought the 2023 and plan to keep it for a long time. They are great for a long comfier road trips too.
Just bought a 2021 GX with 11k miles, great truck- plan to keep it forever!
A TH-camr measured KDSS at something around 80% more articulation in the front and ~equal in the rear
And actually understanding kdss, unlike so many videos out there.
The GX460 being a 150-series Land Cruiser will outlast anything.
It will outlast your Jeep, Bronco, Land Rover and G-Wagon.
Well said in the summary. Planned obsolescence is just wrong
Best review ever on a GX period. This is the reason we buy them, p.s. I have 3 of them
Thank you Toyota!
At the time we did not see what the future of Toyota trucks looked like. So, we had hoped it would better blend of old and new. Not so much.
Thank you so much for reviewing my favorite vehicle. An awesome video for an awesome legacy of a vehicle.
That's the one thing I wish my '18 had as well.
our 21 has adaptive and ironically its the only thing that doesn't work lol...perhaps the wheel sensors are muddy or aomething?
My friend recently bought a 16 GX and I love the thing. It's so solid and well built, I'm not even a truck or SUV person but I want one.
Very good content as usual, and the new HDR format adds to the production quality, specially in the interior shots, Keep it up guys and Thanks!
Idk how many people noticed , but I did , the videos look spot on in HDR
Sometimes the old ways are the best.
Well Done.
Not offered in the states...
@@Rexmorgan687 Yep. And in Europe we don't get GX460
@@slava_trushkin that's a win in my book; prices have finally come back to earth and I might be able to buy one in a year or two lol.
Great video from actual car enthusiasts that know what they are talking about! Toyota FTW!
In like 10 years this thing is going to be a great vehicle
Such a great review, guys. Statistics don't lie......period. Record show, this truck is a tank, by all means. many people do 250K or more and never touch engines. This GX is an animal. If I had 65K to spare, I would walk into a dealer and order one, just as is. No BMW, no Audi, No Land Rover. GX as simple as that. Also, if I am not mistaken, 23 is the last year for them.
Well presented, objective discussion of this vehicle. Loved the 'philosophical' in-vehicle points of view about the pros and cons of the GX460.
Just traded my 2023 LX600 for an end of era 2023 GX460…many reasons as all described in this video. Dead on. So good.
It’s basically a Land Cruiser!
I just purchased a 2023 GX460 and we love everything so far. I had a lot of problems with the new GMC Denali so we decided to go back to having not just a car but a great car.
My family has THREE V8 Land Cruisers with 300k+ miles EACH. There’s no greater luxury than a vehicle that just keeps going.
Well said.
It's like going back to a time when TH-cam reviews were trusty and reliable without gimicks.
Those are gx 470 problems. Fixed, or mostly fixed, in the newer GX 460.
It’s also not fully mechanical. The valve open/close is electronic. 12 mpg and below it’s open, above 12 closed
love the KDSS
DR KDSS sells a switch and wiring kit that lets you turn off kdss for driving on bumpy roads faster than 12mph. If the KDSS ever has an expensive failure, it can be deleted.
@@brianphillips8228 yep I have it.
When you live in africa and want a some luxury nothing beats this. As for old ways is best. In south africa the old way body on frame is the only way. Thanks for the cool video and channel am a big fan.
Facts! Especially, considering our roads.
My dad drives his 2001 Landcruiser 200 4.2 turbo diesel everyday. 514,000 miles on the clock and you can rely on it to start every single day.
An incredible vehicle really considering how hard it's life has been and how moist our climate is.
Nice review guys, I have a 2023 GX460 V8 and it’s fantastic. It drives really smoothly for a truck and the simplicity is great.
Not a fan but this beast will outlast 70 percent of most marriages n like 80 percent in Cali!
Well done review🏆
I have the 22 GX BL. The 23 comes with the 360 camera, it was not an option in 22 BL. The GX customer is a bit older and it really works for this demographic. I wish it had less tech not more. Lexus 'stopped sale' on the hitch for the GX since Oct 2021, Why?
I bought a 2018 GX460 for its reliability and durability. It was stolen about a year ago, driven to the closest seaport, loaded on a ship and taken somewhere where they really value this car for its reliability and durability - and don’t necessarily have the tools available to fix modern cars.
Amazing video quality and the HDR definitively brings a big plus to the image quality. I always have watched your videos from my Home Cinema room and I love the new quality 🙂
This would be a great buy, if it would only fit in my basement garage parking space. I wish Toyota retains some of these traits which made these have such great longevity on the next gen models.
Very honest review and is true that not everyhing new is better.Bravo guys keep be honest that's what peoples want !Thank you for the good work!
I’ll take this any day of the week over the newer models 👍
I bought a new 2004 Tundra dbl-cab and I never thought that 18 plus years and well over 200,000 miles later, I would still be driving it almost daily. The V8 in it is still as smooth today as it was one-hundred-thousand miles ago.
You'll have it for another 200k. Best manufacturer by far.
Another magic gas user , you get more MPG than what it is advertised for , it’s unbelievable
As as a 40 year old that does the family car maintenance. I watch Savage geese vids over all other channels. Love it
I went through 2 G500s, X5s, Land/Range Rovers, Nissan Patrol, so on and so on, and ended up in a Lexus GX. This is what a proper car guy buys once they’ve been through it all, a simple, reliable, capable, comfortable and well built car like this one. Luxury became not having to worry about anything.
Basically, and did exactly the same💯
All the fancy higher end stuff for years. Then back…
You guys are the best ! I really appreciate your honest and professional reviews !! I am sold on this incredibly reliable SUV !!!
Thank you 😊
My 6-month and I are watching this. He says it's been the same for the last 10 years.
I love the simple engineering of it.
