My favorite references are those that build legitimate lore between the series. For example, in GX, the name "Atem" is mentioned in Season3 two times. I at least checked one of those instances in japanese and it wasn't there. For that to be the case, Seto himself likely added the missing info to the history books of his duelschool. Another one of them is the mention of the name Truesdale in 5ds that is explained in this video. In the dubcontinuity, Season 4 of GX never happened, so Zane is dead. This means that after the death of his brother and disappearance of his best friend, Cyrus stopped being a scrub and worked himself up the ranks in the pro-leagues. Considering Zane said that he was proud of him, this much effort and success to carry on his legacy is just a great result of Cyrus' characterarc. Even if the most significant part of the arc happened offscreen between shows. -------‐--------------- Okay, and now the Reference I dislike. The Kaibadome. Considering they would name this not-dome in reference to the original kaibadome instead of Kaiba himself just building a second Kaibadome basically tells me that Seto actually *did* kick the bucket during zero reverse. Otherwise, there would be no reason to randomly dedicate a building to his memory. The issue with this is, the circut in the building is unnamed because 4kids edit. Issue with this is that the potential context of the Kaiba dome only really becomes clear in combination with the name "memorial circuit" itself. So basically, this reference relies on context from an entirely diffrent continuity to actually work in the first place. And I just don't like that. If they want to have a selfcontained western version, then it should actually be selfcontained and not be reliant on the jp original.
@@facebooklinked6610 That has nothing to do with my point, because that literally involves either timetravel or a shared dream. The reason his name being known inuniverse is a big deal is that it was lost to time originally.
Another niche one is in Yusei's duel against Roman - he says 'a duel's not over 'til the last card is played' which while not as iconic as 'get your game on,' is still a reference to Jaden since it was another of his frequently used phrases throughout GX.
I almost forgot about Yusei saying Get Your Game On I’m that episode. It was just great to hear again in 5DS as it was one of my favourite catchphrases.
The Akiza being a Slifer Red is a pretty easy one for the dub to slip in, as the uniforms in the flashback look to the naked eye like Obelisk and Slifer ones (some red some blue). But actually, they are just boys/girls uniform color differences.
Should also mention that the Hyperdrive instrumental plays in Arc-V when Dennis and Gongenzaka take the elevator down to the underground riding duel arena.
Honestly I love the dub only lines because the references make the YuGiOh timeline actually FEEL toed together. I understand that in actuality it is tied somewhat but the references really let you see it and know that these other duelists from past series actually exist and hold status in continuity.
9:44 See, this is a video idea I kinda want to see. What changes did the dub make that is actually preferable than the original. As dorky as it is, I liked "Heart of the Cards" Because it kinda emphasizes the bond a player has with their deck, and it ended up being a bigger thing in later series, like when Judai tells the people in the world of Darkness to remember the bond they have with their deck.
I may be a bit wrong, but I think that at least some versions of the early manga chapters do mention something like a "Heart of the Cards", but I'm not sure about the original japanese version. Also, if there's a good thing they did, that was the Shadow Realm, not only is it stupidly iconic as a concept, but also is basically "just dying" on the japanese version, while the 4kids version had hell for kids.
I honestly prefer some of the dub terms. Maybe it's just because I was introduced to the franchise with Dub, but I think Duel Runner and Turbo Duel just sound super cool.
Yeah, the heart of the cards actually was mentioned in EP1 of duel monsters. It is just the continued mention of it that is 4kids-exclusive. If we want to talk about standout dub-terms, that would be sent to he stars. It just made he story of GX Season3 better overall with no strings attached.(Even the Shadow Realm has some issues to it, due to the japanese just plainly making more sense sometimes.)
During the dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds when Yusei encountered Z-ONE, some music played that often featured in GX Not music-related, in a recent Sevens episode , some one tributed two monsters to summon a Utopia-like monster with someone even saying that the duellist had two level 4s (ZEXAL reference)
similar one. in the GX episode King of Copycats. a lot of the music used during the Dimitri vs Jaden duel was from the duel monsters anime. Capsule Monsters arc specifically. I'd love to find an isolated version of the track used when he summoned Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning
I knew all of these easter eggs Dylan Thanks for this video my #1 favorite is Yusei saying "Get your Game on" I bust a gut cracking up everytime I watch that episode during my yugithon as my tribute to my mom, & I agree that they should have kept the gag going with later seasons. Also this video was a wonderful early birthday gift from you since I'll be turning 40 on Aug. 18th.
I remember the first time I saw the episode where Yusei said, "Get your game on!", and I cracked up when I heard it. With how serious the rest of the episode was, that little bit of goofiness was JUST the amount I needed to keep watching the episode, and it's STILL my favorite moment that the English Dub did for Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's.
What's interesting about the Truesdale name drop is that towards the end of GX the Truesdale brothers were talking about changing dueling or something. I always thought it was hinted at that they had a lot to do with the creation of turbo duels.
I actually like the idea that they based the Slifer Red Obelisk Blue reference because Aki wears a Red Uniform in the flashback and the student she Attacked was in a Blue Uniform
The "dinner plans with Seto Kaiba" line was *sarcasm,* 'cause the guard didn't believe Crow's claim. Doesn't matter if Kaiba's alive at that point or not.
I love these refernces. I'm guessing the Japanese version doesn't make these as a point to distance each series from each other but the English version defiantly has fun with world building.
This is a fascinating list - Thank You! There is something else in your vid, though. At 11:21s - when you talk about the Crash Town episode dub - there is a sign above the Flower Shop that reads "The Classy Ass". I just noticed that and it made me giggle. X-D
Would consider doing more dub related videos say for example too 10 funniest dub moment (genuinely funny not unintentionally funny)? Moments like Jack’s job hunting, Martha joking Yusei of him possibly fancying Akiza (sub and dub of that moment is grand), Astral’s observations (some of which aren’t even from the original sub) etc.
You should also do times that the English dub changed the plot or storyline For example in episode 66 of zexal in the bun version Yuma wanted to transform into zexal while in the original version he didn’t wanted to do it because of the public also in the dub people cheered Yuma while in the original was zexalura Or when shima said that he knew Yusaku secret he made puns with the words play Hanoi and make, while in the original he only said he knew his secret
Thank you Dylan for a Good Video! I knew most of the references in this video. Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS references I didn't know because I only watch one episode of the dubbed.
If I'm not mistaken, Yusei said ''A Duel's not over until the last card is played!" against the Guard Robot, which is Yugi's dub catchphrase. I think he also said "I need to get my game on!" in his rematch with Roman
Tbf saying Slifer Red and Obelisk Blue doesn’t mean they went to the same Duel Academy as GX. Just that it uses the same ranking system. It’s even shown in Episode 67 which Duel Academy that Aki (and Rua and Ruka) went to
I love how yusei said get you game on yeah i would laugh if yusaku said my monsters a ready to swing into action or ladies and gentleman that dosen't suit yusaku's personallity and yuga into the vrains

My favorite dub change in 5ds is actually from the first few episodes. Jack is portrayed as more antagonistic, being the one to come up with the part to track Yusei through Riley and that is cool to me. Going to get Stardust back from Jack is Yusei's initially goal and that makes him our initial antagonist.
Yeah Jack does give anti villain vibes in the first arc. Although Godwin was still the chess master and overall "villain" when the show started, he never actually dueled during the Fortune Cup so Jack was a more direct threat to actually be taken on.

I do wish other media acknowledged other series besides duel monsters. I know that’s the standard cause it’s what people recognize the most(like the 80s ninja turtles, G1 transformers, Batman tas, Jojo part 3 or 4, dragonball Z, etc) but I feel it’s a more loving gesture cause it shows a better understanding and sense of acknowledgment of the franchise than just the surface stuff everyone knows.
12:30 I could have sworn that when Yusei is trapped in that warehouse and has to duel the robot to escape, and they are celebrating 10 years, as the episode is fading Yusei says, "I've got to get my game on, or else we can't escape."
You do know that is Yugioh GX, the first time jaden fights Aster he says it’s time to duel and then corrects himself and says wrong catchphrase and says get your game on
Well that's not completely true, he only cannot duel anymore with the cyberdarks as they were the cause of his heart condition. At the end of S4 of GX Zane actually says that he will start over with a new deck and he lets the cyberdarks to Cyrus which means he can actually duel with anyother deck that he might have built and by the time 5D's happens he surely is recovered from his condition so he could very well be Zane himself one of the elite champions
In Arc V, one of the advanced dueling mechanics in the Leo Institute mentions the Fudo Method in its Synchro curriculum. It's written, not spoken, but I found that to be an interesting little nod.

Season 3 mentions Atem? Cool, season 4 actually has him in a scene.
@@facebooklinked6610 That has nothing to do with my point, because that literally involves either timetravel or a shared dream. The reason his name being known inuniverse is a big deal is that it was lost to time originally.
@@facebooklinked6610 What does that have to do with anything?
Zanes still alive they just didn’t dub it like Jack having Red Nova
@A guy with an anime Profile Pic Because I can the same way Jack got Red Nova Dragon
4Kids: How many references should we put in 5Ds?
Everyone: Yes!
Another niche one is in Yusei's duel against Roman - he says 'a duel's not over 'til the last card is played' which while not as iconic as 'get your game on,' is still a reference to Jaden since it was another of his frequently used phrases throughout GX.
Jesse Wheeler will always be canon in my heart 💔
In GX episode 19, Jaden is (also) mentioned the Heart of the Cards
Thats pretty cool! I feel like he mentioned the heart of the cards a few times!
@@YugiohEverything he did. Imposter Yugi(Forgot his name) also referenced it when dueling Jaden
@@NinetyLegos Dimitri
Yusei: “Get you game on”
Jaden: “tf Yusei”
Can you feel the power was actually a really good easter egg i love that opening
I almost forgot about Yusei saying Get Your Game On I’m that episode. It was just great to hear again in 5DS as it was one of my favourite catchphrases.
Didn't he also say "Game On!" against the Crowler clone?
@@darkknight5541 Who? Yusei? He only said it once in the English dub
@@rainbowdragon168 I could've sworn he said a shorter version of it in episode 67, though maybe i'm misremembering it.
@@darkknight5541 He didn’t
The Akiza being a Slifer Red is a pretty easy one for the dub to slip in, as the uniforms in the flashback look to the naked eye like Obelisk and Slifer ones (some red some blue). But actually, they are just boys/girls uniform color differences.
It’s all fun and games until Yusaku has to say”Ladies and Gentlemen!!!”
Should also mention that the Hyperdrive instrumental plays in Arc-V when Dennis and Gongenzaka take the elevator down to the underground riding duel arena.
I actually had never even heard of that one until a few of you pointed it out! You learn something new everyday!
Thats actually a pretty good idea!! I think I am definitely going to try and whip up a video like that! :)
For me it's the openings. From Get your Game on and Halfway To Forever to Can You Feel the Power and Into the Vrains are fucking bangers
I like learning more about these Easter Eggs! Thanks Dylan!
Also in the background of Vrains there was a duel school of arc v
Where?
That would be a dub only reference though
@@hunterhq295 episode 105 when aoi is walking
During the dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds when Yusei encountered Z-ONE, some music played that often featured in GX
Not music-related, in a recent Sevens episode , some one tributed two monsters to summon a Utopia-like monster with someone even saying that the duellist had two level 4s (ZEXAL reference)
Oh, he brought that up in his review; he totally caught that.
sevens is FULL of these references literraly every Yu-person is a past series reference
@DarkYozora 222 Uniform Number 39, but yeah I get your point.
similar one. in the GX episode King of Copycats. a lot of the music used during the Dimitri vs Jaden duel was from the duel monsters anime.
18th.
Happy early birthday my friend!!! Happy you enjoyed the video! The BIG 4-0 coming up!
I never knew Joey even had a cousin😄. “Get your game on”. I knew it. He must like jaden’s catchphrase more than yugi’s😄
How did I never notice that sign next to cowboy yusei that said “the classy ass” that shit’s HILARIOUS 😂
5Ds had the best English Easter eggs out there. I remember laughing so hard when he did a GX catch phrase.😁
Y'all remember when they switched out Crow's VA in the dub and the second one sounded like he was trying too hard?
You should see the Arabic MBC3 dub, that one swapped Jack *and* Crow around three times (ARC-V included)
It's Akiza not Aki, please get it right
@@NitrotheWolf300
It's both.
It’s actually really cute if you remember crashtown happens after the events of BBT. Aaaaaw Yusei paying tribute to his friends!!
Yuma also said “get your game on” once .. I think it was the duel where he teamed up with shark against the two bullies.
When?
Would consider doing more dub related videos say for example too 10 funniest dub moment (genuinely funny not unintentionally funny)? Moments like Jack’s job hunting, Martha joking Yusei of him possibly fancying Akiza (sub and dub of that moment is grand), Astral’s observations (some of which aren’t even from the original sub) etc.
I can't be the only one who instantly thinks of Shmaden Shmuki
@@erickjr9 *Hear me, Shmaden!*
In the greman version of 5ds Blitzer mentions zane truesdale in full name when he talks about the duelists he fought in the past
You should also do times that the English dub changed the plot or storyline
For example in episode 66 of zexal in the bun version Yuma wanted to transform into zexal while in the original version he didn’t wanted to do it because of the public also in the dub people cheered Yuma while in the original was zexalura
Or when shima said that he knew Yusaku secret he made puns with the words play Hanoi and make, while in the original he only said he knew his secret
The dub DEF changed alot of storylines! I might tackle a 10 times video for that topic honestly! TY for rec!
@@YugiohEverything don’t forget to include these ones
Yuga be saying:"time to become a playmaker!" or some random junk like that xD
Re-watching GX with a friend currently, and Jaiden actaully DOES have a line where he says something like: Now, let's duel! Woops, wrong catchphrase, get your game on!
Might update this with the episode number if I remember to go back and find it.
Dub likes everything to be connected, no loose characters
Meanwhile sub doesn't mind abandoning previous continuities or leaving loose one off characters
I guess that could be due to Western media in general really embracing kirchov's gun ,(I think I messed up the name)
Edit: chekov's*
Really gotta wonder just what WILL happen with the Sevens dub...
@@christopherb501 oofus

I love how in the TCG we called it "Harpie's Brother" and then Konami was like nah bruh, and then we changed it to whatever it's called now (you're always Harpie's brother to us good sir)
A lot of folks didn’t notice that duel academy from GX is the same building yugi dueled darts in the original series
@@dn22pkkdd476 yaaa pretty sure on this one. If you look at the buildings it’s the same exact architecture and It would make sense that the writers would make a dueling school at the same location the world almost got destroyed at
There was a scene in Yugioh Vrains where Yusaku (Playmaker) said "That's game" when he was dueling the knights of hanoi
I like to think that the Wheeler reference goes like this,
“Is that Joey Wheeler ?”
“No man that’s his cousin Jesse Wheeler, of course it’s Joey Wheeler ya dumb broad”
Yuma should have said let's rap it out when he was dueling on those cart things in the tournament in first season
My favourite part of this video is when he says "this is only in the dub" like 7 times for each entry
yuya saying lets high five the sky just once is actually kinda fitting i would loved that xD could you imagine if he said them all atleast once except vrains obviously lol
I agree I love when they do references in any yu-gi-oh series
As a massive yugioh nerd is no one gonna talk about THAT sigh next to yusei fudo? XD
4kids in original series and gx: NO GUNS
4kids in 5ds: Consept, we have duel disks but they're guns
LOL I think parts of crashtown dub still had finger guns too
Also: Ancient Gear Soldiers get to have guns, and Axel gets to have his duel disk still functioning as a gun.
That's the best part. Gun duel disks but we still have to point our fingers
In the beginning of Zexal II in the English dub Gorog is watching TV in his layer/mancave (IDK if Alito is present) and the TV is playing a music video: Take a Chance, which is the Opening in Zexal I
I do wish other media acknowledged other series besides duel monsters.
Ok unironicly they should have kept the catchphrase thing going
You do know that is Yugioh GX, the first time jaden fights Aster he says it’s time to duel and then corrects himself and says wrong catchphrase and says get your game on
Me who’s only watched yugioh season one:
Ah yes, interesting
7:03 it’ll have to be Cyrus Zane can’t duel anymore on account of his heart condition
Well that's not completely true, he only cannot duel anymore with the cyberdarks as they were the cause of his heart condition. At the end of S4 of GX Zane actually says that he will start over with a new deck and he lets the cyberdarks to Cyrus which means he can actually duel with anyother deck that he might have built and by the time 5D's happens he surely is recovered from his condition so he could very well be Zane himself one of the elite champions
isnt that moment where yusei otks the 3 guys also a reference to when Chazz does the same 1 v 3 battle vs that one school?
In Arc V, one of the advanced dueling mechanics in the Leo Institute mentions the Fudo Method in its Synchro curriculum. It's written, not spoken, but I found that to be an interesting little nod.
These references are one of the main reasons for why I prefer the dub over the sub.
I guess 4KMedia knew Konami wasn't going to ever reference ARC-V in the VRAINS era, and so they decided to step up to the plate lol
I believe that the "Can You Feel the Power" easter egg was also in Episode 1 of VRAINS when Kusanagi and Yusaku are working the food truck
I remember one in Arc-V during the Friendship Cup arc where Hyperdrive was playing as elevator music
2:37 Is it just me, or does this guy kind of look like Chazz's brother Slade?
I guess I can join you in that train of thought now.
I'll bet Yusei learned how to say "Get your game on!" from Jaden when they and Yugi were about to duel Paradox!
The best part about Jesse Wheeler is that he's voiced by Joey Wheeler's VA Wayne Grayson.
Is that Dylan from Yugioh Everything?
Nah, that's his cousin Donald from Yugioh Something.
All very nice and everything, but I'm still waiting for the following videos:
- Top 10 (or 15) Best (Worst) Episodes of each Yu-Gi-Oh series.
- Top 10 (or 15) Best (Worst) Duels of each Yu-Gi-Oh series.
5:44 buddy this is the same guy that pulled Obelisk out of his deck and summoned even though all the God cards left the world. This is a man who has no limits and his own willpower and confidence rivals the gods.
Yusei: Get your game on!
Jaden: Oh, those poor scrubs.
I love these kind of videos
Y'know, it's very possible Bonds Beyond Time took place before the Crashtown Arc. Maybe Yusei picked up that phrase from the legend himself.
Japanese Yugioh 5ds also have some references too, you can see that one sponsorship for the WRP is “Manjoume entertainment” and Team Taiyo mentions the three egyptian god cards
So its canon that their family is still alive at that point then. I knew 5Ds was in the same world+timeline
@Jacob Yes it is the same timeline, also Testsu Trudge was the monitor of Domino High school so everyone in DM should be alive at least by age
@@Paco8478 how old is trudge in 5ds? It was at least 16 years since zero reverse(I forget yuseis age, ik he's adult)
If we assume neo domino replaced domino it would have to be at least 10 years of research and implementation for ener-d
@Jacob Yusei is 18 years old in the first season, Yugi has 27 by the end of GX (so does trudge) so in case the ener-d was being investigated by the time of GX the minimum age would be 45, I think trudge has between 45 - 55 at least he doesn’t looks more than 60 but who knows with anime
@@Paco8478 Yugi was 27 then? TF? I thought he looked like an adult in that last present day scene, but tf?

#6 7:50
Saying Yugi as a distraction makes way more sense than yelling, look it's Kaibaman, a monster card, which happens to have a spirit that only main characters can see monster spirits most the time
I kinda wished they focused more on the pros and pro circuit dueling. Like we’ve seen a bit of it in GX and 5D’s but not really
In episode 58 of Yugioh Arc-V, when Gong is in the elevator in the Synchero dimension, the elevator music playing is the Yugioh 5D's theme song "Over drive".
I really love all the stuff the Dub adds to the shows, makes it very special and memorable!
