"Death from Above" is an airborne infantry slogan. It also makes more sense in the book where the troopers wore power armor and were dropped into the battlefield from low orbit.
It's a shame the director ruined absolutely any chance of a redeeming reboot of Starship Troopers to be made where they actually do the Mobile Infantry stuff they do in the book.
@@Tekisasubakani: I miss the CG animated series. Yes, that incarnation included the Skinnies. Only tangentially related: One summer, it was brutally hot where I live (near the corner of Van Nuys & Roscoe in Southern CA), and I was flipping through the channels to find the day's episode of SST. The day before, we'd hit not just triple digit weather, but broke 120, so you can imagine that rain would be much appreciated. I happened to land on al roker (post-defattening) saying "Well, looks like we dodged a bullet there!", referring to a 15% chance of rain, predicted the day before, evaporating quicker than the rain itself would in 120+ degrees F weather. It was 7 or 8 or 9 in the morning, and already the temperature was just over 90. Fuck al roker!
My high hopes for seeing power armor were dashed, and the best they could do is refer to the recruits as apes. If someone could please do a scene for scene adaptation of the book, I would be grateful.

11:25 actually no, the "Death from above" is a common motto used in paratroopers or any trooper that comes in from the sky down on the ground (in their case they use spacecrafts to get to the ground from space).
Considering in the book they drop from low orbit, or HALO drop, and in the movie they just fly to the surface...that tat absolutely doesnt belong in the movie.
The "Death from Above" tattoo is due to the Troopers in the original novel being dropped in power armor from orbiting Starships, like the ODSTs from Halo. Hence the title "Starship Troopers".
@@EpecFale That's because Heinlein actually thought about the story he was writing and the setting he was creating, and Veerhoven just wanted to call a shitty D-list movie "satire". @@ohilevoeauca789 Comparing the first movie to the book I would say that they did a fare job of translating between the mediums. True some of the best parts of the book, like plot, were left out but the movie was still fun. What makes it 'bad' is that they then put out two more movies just to catch the technology of the movies up to the technology of the books.
Interestingly enough, that line is in the book, and is self-aware. When the recruiter is talking to them, he tells them that he has been intentionally put at the recruiting desk to slow down recruitment, because too many people are enlisting.
Well they didn't spend anything on story, The director asked someone for a TLDR of the book and a made a movie about it. In the Book they dropped in Powered Exosuits like a mix of the ODST's from Halo and Iron man.

@Gwyn and Gold the intitial klendathu battle the Military had no idea what the bugs were capable of. Not to mention the terrain was absolutely horrible for anything larger than small troop transports. They figured a lightning quick smash and destroy would end the war
@Gwyn and Gold ok... 1. The Terran Federation is the exact opposite of "muh' fascism"... It is a meritocratic, voluntary service democracy. In fascism citizenship guarantees service, in the Terran federation, service guarantees citizenship. The contrast is vital. You can live your entire life in the federation as a civilian, and the only legal difference between you and a volunteer citizen is the franchise. (Which, affects your life not one bit.) As a civilian, you have no real responsibility to the state beyond taxes. As citizen, you can participate in the governing of the state, but have a responsibility commensurate with that power. If the Terran Federation was actually fascist, Jhonny's dad would have had that long rant about how citizenship is useless. 2. During the initial invasion of Klendathu, they had no idea what the hell they were dealing with. They though they were dealing with mindless insects which made shock infantry tactics more than adequate. Don't forget, the Federation military had decades of peace where they had no near-peer enemies, which means that their military structure was more of a peacekeeping quick reaction force than a real military. 3. Nuking the planet from orbit sounds like a great plan until you realize that most of the bug population centers are deep underground and more or less impossible to get to even with nuclear munitions.
@Gwyn and Gold Kinda, you have to do federal service. While most people serve in the military, it is not the only form of federal service. The whole idea is to demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice personal gain for the benefit of the federation as a whole before you are given a stake in governing the federation. It's not compulsory. In fact, it is even discouraged. You can live a full and happy life as a civilian with the only loss being the ability to vote or hold public office. That's the core ideal of the Terran Federation. It's the Cincinnatis model of service for the public good. Cincinnatis was a man who was elected, twice, as the dictator of the Roman Republic who was content to return to the life of a simple farmer once his services were no longer needed by the Republic. One of the reasons why I think this book needs to be mandatory reading for all children is to understand a very basic concept. Power over others can only be granted to those who have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice personal benefit for the common good. The franchise is power over others, by definition. As such, it is a terrible responsibility that needs to be treated with the respect it deserves, not simply a tool for personal advancement. That is the core problem with the universal franchise. To quote Heinlein, "Something freely given has no value". If a person doesn't have to EARN the right to vote, they will put no value in their vote and simply use said vote to advance their own interests. I think the world would be a much better place if we lived under the guiding principles of the Terran Federation. Individual rights are universal. Power over others is only granted to those who have power over one's own desires. It doesn't matter who or what you are. If you demonstrate the ability to put the needs of others ahead of your own, only then can you be trusted with power over others.
They have had "Death from above" tattoo cause they are troopers, that implies landing on an enemy land from above (from starships etc.) So that is a sin off!
16:47 Ah, the reason for that is the small factor of "They actually had her body, because she made it back wounded and died on the ship, whereas the bodies of the rest who died were left where they fell."
You forgot to sin the fact that when the commanding officer loses his legs (totally survivable as long as they can stop the bleeding and get timely medical attention) they have to mercy kill him because they think he’s gonna die, but when Johnny’s gf gets her chest turned into a chopped mango and probably has already had multiple organ failures, they still try to rescue her. That’s worth at least 5 sins for not having basic medical knowledge
Not really dude trooper would have to carry his body while slowing down the team and lowering everyones chance of survival, it's pretty much Game Over for him and he wants his team to survive also it's 2 legs no one so the amount of blood loss would be massive.

Looking through the comments, the one thing I don't see much spoken about is the driving sound design. That music that is played during most the battles. It really elevates the whole movie. I also noticed on a few of the sins, that some of them were answered in the movie at different points. Zander had mentioned he was shipping out to command school during the football game, might have been some type of ROTC type program. Also Denise's reckless leaving the spaceport, she mentions her instructors could not keep up with her and Zander tells her to not go faster than port speed or they get pilot privileges revoked. - Seems very nit picky- As can be seen in the comments this movie is much deeper than most people realize. @@notafanofbusesoranyothertr513 Yeah, I re-watched it after seeing cinemasins' video. They actually used quite a lot of dummy's that I had never noticed before, like when Michael Ironside gets his legs ripped off, you can really only tell if you freeze frame it and the Zander dummy in the brain sucking scene was also really well done. There's plenty more examples of the practical effects that I thought looked absolutely amazing, even some of the 3D effects looked great considering it was 1997. I'd hate to think what the rendering time was like for some of those scenes that have hundreds of bugs in them. Paul Verhoeven really knew what he was doing with the effects to make a lot of this stuff believable. I think Cinemasins is a bit of a hack, I've thought that ever since his Captain Marvel video. Personally I found that film to be awful, filled with bad plot points, weak character development, in-your-face politics and really boring to watch, yet it still got less than 100 sins? What more could one ask for?!
I've always assumed the bugs didn't target Buenos Aires but just Earth, and it just so happened to flatten the city Rico was from. Kinda like carpet bombing before we invented laser-guided bombs.
It is pretty strongly implied that the humans were the ones who launched the asteroid at Earth so they could droll up some nationalist anti bug sentiment and get the Earth government to agree to attack Klendathu. There is no way that the bugs could have managed to even hit our solar system let alone Earth from the other end of the galaxy. And if that asteroid was traveling at less than light speed it would have taken thousands of years to arrive in our solar system.
@@VicariousReality7 *"The ability to launch a meteorite ACROSS AN ENTIRE GALAXY to hit a planet would require a nearly godlike technology and precision"* Not only that. Considering that asteroids only move at a tiny fraction of the speed of light, this asteroid would take millions upon millions of years to hit Earth. Due to the low speed and star density, the boulder would likely be captured by some star rather than make it through to Earth. Even if these bugs could bring this asteroid up to the speed of light and maintain the speed the whole way, it would still take tens of thousands of years and the release of energy at the speed of light upon impact with the Earth would have destroyed not only the city but the entire planet. Assuming the boulder was from the Oort cloud or one of the asteroid belts, the question still remains as to why space surveillance could have missed the bugs operating in such proximity. How do bugs actually move through space? But another completely different logic error: If this asteroid has been traveling for thousands or millions of years, then the bugs must have sent it off all that time ago. Why should they do this? At that time, people were still relatively primitive creatures without space travel and no one knew anything about the other. Consequently, they were not at war with each other and had no reason to send the asteroid.

To be fair to Verhoeven, though, Rico's rapid promotion in the movie is part of the satire. The joke there is that the lives of the soldiers, supposedly the honored as "citizens", mean nothing. Rico gets promoted simply because so many people died, and he's too dumb to realize it.

3:56 - it's explained in the film already that citizenship (and rights like voting or having children) is not just given, you need to earn it through service to the Federation - hence people joining the army as citizenship is guaranteed. It's highly likely that given the UCF was formed after a revolt led by intellectuals, going to Harvard (or equivalent) and then joining some part of government service would be a cushy (and safe) way to citizenship hence Rico's parent's demand.
It was explained that the Intellectuals *failed* in their revolt because they lacked a moral science, which in turn is what allowed the veterans' governance to remain stable. The reason Rico's parents does not wish him to join is that most people are not Citizens but Civilians, free to do most things not directly involving governance, and joining the service carries an obvious risk of bodily harm. In their eyes, there is simply no advantage to sign up (politics are bollocks regardless) while there are some definite cons in time lost and risks taken.

Robocop also incorporated a bit of propaganda like they do in Starship Troopers, but with commercials about war-themed toys and unabashed consumerism, as well as outrageous news briefs on tv rather than the "Would you like to know more?" segments. 10:32 "Also, for an emergency announcement about an ongoing disaster, this sucker is REALLY well edited." Yeah, it's ALMOST like that Government had most of it ready to go and just had to insert a few key images.
To be fair, governments and media outlets usually have multiple versions of a story prepared ahead of big events like this. Nixon had a speech ready for if Armstrong and Aldrin were stranded on the moon, Eisenhower had a speech ready for if the Normandy invasion failed, etc. Edit - So for some reason I thought the original comment was talking about Klendathu, but my post still holds true with some tweaks. If you're a media company, and your government is at war with a race that can chuck space rocks at your planet, it makes sense to have a template for 'space rock hits populated area' and then fill in the blanks mad-lib style.
@@CathrineMacNiel not really. The government in this movie was a Fascist dictatorship that perpetuated propaganda to further the war. It'd be perfectly logical to think they prepared a video like that ahead of time.
The implication is that the destruction of Buenos Aires was a false flag attack - the Bugs spread via spores fired into space and don't have ships or space vehicles in order to send this asteroid. The whole point is it's implied they had the footage PRIOR to the attack.
Since you guys here raise this question... I totally agree on "You have to work for the state to have a say in it" - however, if the whole humanity is ruled by military people, the world's gotta be a really ineffective and "you're the boss, I'm an idiot" style place to live in. "Work for the state" can and probably should focus on non-military stuff or at least have it in equal measure as other branches of state service. I must be really fun at parties

Johnny bonus round!! lol! Also.. You forgot to mention the asteroid that struck earth was big enough to do an extinction event. Also Also... they All believe that bugs are stupid. Yet they accept the fact that they can throw an asteroid accross the galaxy straight to earth with pin point accuracy.
To be fair, ants colonise and monkeys throw shit at others. The scene in starship troopers was parodying news sites that are still relevant today, that marginalise and try to laugh at the truth.
If you should know anything about people, it's that they have an infinite capacity to hold contradictory ideas about reality without ever questioning it.
I've seen the movie several times, and a few things I'd like to point out. The movie is satirical towards Fascist propaganda. Sure the bugs might be intelligent, but media, the government, everybody is telling them that the bugs are dumb. Anyone who speaks out against what the propaganda or government says is considered unpatriotic and horrible. It shows this through the random commercials throughout the film. It's i.oed the bugs actually didn't send the asteroids to Earth (the humans had several ships that could shoot down these asteroids, and it was never shown the bugs had the ability to do so). It's more likely the humans attacked the area itself since a few people there were anti-military. They kill those people, use their deaths as propaganda, and boom now they have more support. The movie is actually a lot smarter than people give it credit for, and there's much more if you really analyze it.
@@rpsyco There may be more if you read stuff into it that isn’t there. But the movie is based on an existing work of fiction in which the very same events happen, albeit for slightly different reasons. In the book there is no question that the Bugs are intelligent. They use weapons among other things. In the book the Bugs preemptively attack Buenos Aires as the Federation is completely unaware of them prior to that attack. The movie, for some reason, wants the Federation at the outset to presume the Bugs are unintelligent - then makes the Federation deducing, then confirming, the intelligence of the Bugs a primary plot point. Which reinforces the idea that the Federation in actual fact did not initially think the Bugs were intelligent. Yes, they accept that the Bugs can throw an asteroid across the galaxy...because the Bugs can throw colonization parties across the galaxy. If the Bugs can launch colonies accurately enough across interstellar space to land them on planets orbiting far stars, they can launch a mere rock the same way with the same accuracy. There is literally no need to presume that the whole thing is some Federation-backed false flag operation. In general, if you want to learn what was going on that a movie based on an adapted work doesn’t cover, you can look to the source material for answers. That should be your go-to option. It might take a bit of creativity to reconcile the two (depending on how much the two diverge), but if/when they can be reconciled I’d think that would be preferable to just inventing new answers that are irreconcilable with both.
5:33 - All *real* military drill instructors are also derivatives of R Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket. In fact, Ermey's drill instructor performance in Full Metal Jacket was toned down a bit for the movie.
I like that no character questions the actions of the state/military. It shows respect for the audience. It's an Easter egg that's there if you bother to notice it. If you don't, it's just a fun action movie and you kind of *are* a character. It's masterfully done. -10 sins.

"Death from Above" is an airborne infantry slogan. It also makes more sense in the book where the troopers wore power armor and were dropped into the battlefield from low orbit.

@Gwyn and Gold Deploying those from orbit is probably a bit more trouble than its worth when you have total air superiority. (in theory)
@Gwyn and Gold the intitial klendathu battle the Military had no idea what the bugs were capable of. Not to mention the terrain was absolutely horrible for anything larger than small troop transports. They figured a lightning quick smash and destroy would end the war
@Gwyn and Gold ok...

The shower scene made sense to me, it's a society that has no use for ideas like personal privacy (also seen elsewhere, no one is ever alone), or anything personal for that matter, only the utility that the individual can render unto the state. It's simultaneously efficient hygiene and helpful in forming the closeness needed to go into combat together.
It's just a standard trope in fascist literature. That's the only reason it's in the movie. But despite this movie's commentary on fascism, it doesn't actually portray the kind of fascist state that would actually have co-ed showers. It wouldn't "help in forming the closeness needed to go into combat together." It would simply cause TONS of sexual assault... Much like the current military.

I was 10 when this movie came out back then I still didn't understand why he chose Carmen over Dizzy. To this day I still think Dina Meyer is crazy hot and she's 50 now

Biggest problem with the movie is Dizzy not getting enough screen time in the shower scene or when her and Johnny hook up in the tent. Dina Meyers is so smoking hot.

@Molecule Mind The film is actually satire for both Fascism, a military state, and the propaganda used to control the people. It tries to show you it from the perspective of a civilian that doesn't realize they're being manipulated to believe what they are, which is why you don't see the actual leaders, and only see the military recruiters at best.
@Molecule Mind What exactly do you think fascism looks like from the inside? Have you seen pictures or footage of the _(non-Jewish)_ German public during the 1930s? They all seemed pretty happy and obedient, because they were oblivious to what was really happening and they didn't question their government's propaganda that everything was great and only going to get better.
Besides which, what else do you call the whole "Citizen" vs "Civilian" thing in the movie? Where Civilians can't vote, have to pay for education & aren't guaranteed a licence to have children. Whereas Citizens can vote, get free education and have priority licenses to have children. And the only way to become a Citizen is to work for the Federation, military, teaching or test subject. The ability to launch a meteorite ACROSS AN ENTIRE GALAXY to hit a planet would require a nearly godlike technology and precision
@@VicariousReality7 Right. There is a theory that the humans let it happen or caused it to justify the war. Isn't like that hasn't happened before.
@@VicariousReality7
*"The ability to launch a meteorite ACROSS AN ENTIRE GALAXY to hit a planet would require a nearly godlike technology and precision"*
Not only that.
But another completely different logic error:
If this asteroid has been traveling for thousands or millions of years, then the bugs must have sent it off all that time ago.
Why should they do this?
At that time, people were still relatively primitive creatures without space travel and no one knew anything about the other.
Consequently, they were not at war with each other and had no reason to send the asteroid.

Even more specifically, the guy in Full Metal Jacket was an actual drill instructor, who was playing the role exactly the way he actually did it. There is a very specific psychological reason why they do this, it is intended to complete upend the trainees life, and integrate them into a new culture as fast as possible. Every nco already thinks that they’re Jesus soooo....
Pine Kirk still holds the record though.
To be fair to Verhoeven, though, Rico's rapid promotion in the movie is part of the satire. The joke there is that the lives of the soldiers, supposedly the honored as "citizens", mean nothing. Rico gets promoted simply because so many people died, and he's too dumb to realize it.
I mean... Rico made it a Lieutenant pretty fast. Nobody mentioned the fact that during that same time, Carl made it a Colonel and was there to _casually_ promote him to the job.
I mean, previous Lt literally died hours prior and they're doesn't seem to be any sergeants on hand.
In the book Carl dies on a research station.
RIght. This is way ol boy is the superior to Denise Richard's character so fast. These guys had at least 8 weeks of boot camp... and this doens't include Advanced Training. Alot of death happened between then.

The creators forgot that audiences are dumb, they even got people to join the army because of this movie.
Paul Veerhoven got approached by the illuminati.
Verhoeven also directed Robocop, and you can see many similarities with the political satire, distopian militaristic society, and over the top gore. Robocop also incorporated a bit of propaganda like they do in Starship Troopers, but with commercials about war-themed toys and unabashed consumerism, as well as outrageous news briefs on tv rather than the "Would you like to know more?" segments. OCP and the Federal Alliance had similarities, and villains like Clarence Boddiger, his gang of thugs, Dick Jones, and ED-209 were represented by the bugs. Both great movies. But still the best scene in movie history is when Boddiger's henchman Emil crashes into the vat of toxic waste and gets run over and splattered.

Yeah. It's a joke. Movie's full of them.
Nah, it‘s not a second rule. Its a clarification of the first. 😁
And colonize multiple planets.
Obviously, reality works a bit differently there.
-10 sins.
"This could be some sort of satirical statement, but I'm sinning it anyway" could apply to every sin in this video.

You might learn something.
I mean the actual book this was based on wasn't written as satire but the director went in another direction.

Probably wasn‘t in the budget.
If you had to choose between CGI bugs (which btw where utterly incredible for the time), CGI power armor, or a Denise Richards shower scene, many people obviously, and unfortunately, make the wrong decision. 😉
OTOH, imagine the absolute cult status of that movie if it had had all three of those!
