Its funny that the people who have big (not very big in comparison to the taxpayer's) investments in the development of the technology, are the ones screaming the most to halt development.
I have no idea because I'm not a scientist, how dangerous this tech is or isn't. What I do know is that the billionaires are hyping it up!

If they want to start regulating A.I. development, what better place to start than right now where it's evident that its use is having a negative impact on society. But no no. Let's wait till there's evidence that it's harming ALL of us and not just some of us. Meanwhile, the negative use of AI slips right in not undetected but ignored becoming a far bigger problem to solve in the future.
This sounds a lot like this current surveillance state in its beginnings targeting Black activists. It was okay when it was the Black Panters and Black activists, but now the nay sayers want to defund the FBI, only now that they're going after whites too and not just Muslims and Black activists. I wonder why they're talking about it at all when they have an opportunity to do something. To this, I say yall have been warned time and time again. But yall are so dismissive when it's the Blacks. Its ALM to BLM yet again. Well, good luck with your dystopian future.

I believe she's talking about a more local stage, which is another important piece of the puzzle. I do wish they gave her more time. Actually, thinking about it, each should have a whole show. Too many individual people have an "I don't have anything to worry about mentality" when it comes to them collecting our information because "We aren't criminals, so we have nothing to worry about." People couldn't and don't still see the bigger picture. A show featuring Petty would help individuals understand how AI affects then on a more personal level. The most important part is the data collection, but there are free models that are 90% as capable as ChatGPT. There is a highly capable 30B parameter model released this week that is uncensored form of ChatGPT that is free and available to anyone. It can be used to direct a person on how to build a bomb, how to produce meth, etc. The real harm comes from bad actors that can get their hands on these tools and get easy access to powerful abilities and information. More capable models need some form of rigorous safety protocols put into place and datasets need to be cleansed of certain information before public release.

Then between Petty, Bengio & Tegmark they explain how AI affects us on a global level.

The point that she's raising is the best in this field have come out and launched a strong campaign, advising about "future risks" - when there are "present risks" that folks have been screaming about for years with little or no "fanfare" concerning it! She's attempting to say "get to now" and address what's happening today. Not "pick our brand of grievance" and "leave yours to the future". It must be stated what is going on in the "here and now" so people will understand in real time the dangers of this technology and the harm being caused. Why wait for the future to be given "a full demonstration" when "hardcore evidence" exists today? THAT'S WHAT SHE'S SAYING. And who wouldn't agree - if not - someone offended because the population of people in need of relief from the harm done, are WOMEN & PEOPLE OF COLOR? Here's the deal: if you train these neural nets on material that contains bias, you get bias. That's it. It's an easy thing in principle to fix. It's a DIFFERENT issue from the existential risk of super-intelligent AI. Bias is getting plenty of attention. It got plenty of attention. By all means let us all work on it. But the people who complained about bias in language models were not somehow "ahead of the experts" or prescient on the topic of existential AI risk. They were just doing what they do: fitting every single damn topic on the face of the planet into a social justice framework involving women and race. If we cannot tell the difference between the 2 issues, there is probably no hope. This has become a parody. You do yourself no favors. The discussion of the topic of facing a super-intelligent AI is not improved by reflexively diverting the question to that of whether or not it will be biased against minorities.

It's doubly insulting considering that algorithmic biases AI has currently is, in part, their own damn fault. I think it's good their raising the alarms but, frfr, they should've stayed quiet and let Tawana speak more because ongoing violence committed by AI will ultimately define the trajectory of violence they'll (potentially) commit in the future. AI is like nuclear technology. It can't be put back in a bottle... and yes, it will be used for war. Future wars of attrition will be robots vs robots, and who can produce the most, and most capable battle bots... Asking for AI to have guardrails will only apply to civilians... for the Military, AI has no, and will have no guardrails... a breakthrough in AI could reveal a "Sun Tzu" moment that some may be enticed to attack first if they had a perceived overwhelming advantage. War is like social evolution or devolution for mankind, and AI will only accelerate this arms race.

I will say that, if I didn’t know the political climate, I’m a bit surprised about the critique regarding AI researchers ignoring current issues. Not because some particular researchers were not, but because racial bias in deep learning model’s training data, as well as some of the applications towards which AI was being directed, received more popular press than singularity type of concerns-relegated to some discussion within academic philosophy and also mentions by certain “futurists.” The other thing to say, though I’m a bit skeptical on some of the kinds of threats envisioned here (out of a sci-fi movie), is that the magnitude of the threat posed is driving this. It’s like discussions surrounding climate change and much else. It’s terrible that harm to our communities often receives insufficient coverage or unsustained coverage, but it is understandable that something that could affect us all, in the most significant of ways (extinction), would receive more coverage. That is not to condone the way the press behaves but it is to say it is a little basic for that to be the input. In any case, it happens to be helpful as continuing reminder of how these tools are being used right now in problematic ways.

As long as capitalism reigns supreme AI will continue to be developed and utilized to gain profit and power. As long as nationalism reigns supreme AI will continue to be developed and utilized to gain advantage for one nation over another. I feel humanity had it's chance to either stay in our infancy of bestiality and brutality or evolve into enlightenment. We chose the former. This point in time was always going to come. To the axiom that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely should be added: technological advancement provides power and absolute technological advancement will outpace humanities ability to cope with the power provided. At that point humanity dies.

You really don’t get it, do you. While racism and gender bias are real, continuing to keep using statements with the terms: black, white, men, women, male, female; you are actually feeding into and exacerbating the problem. While the language continues to highlight differences rather than commonalities between people we’ll never find harmony as a society. Morgan Freeman was correct when he said; “I’m going to stop calling you a ‘white man’ and ask you stop calling me a ‘black man”. The reality is ‘racism’ is a human construct. There’s no African race, Middle Eastern race, Asian race, European race, Native American race, ir any other, there’s only the human race. Every single human being alive has its roots in Africa, because the fossil record, DNA and the human genome project prove it. That’s the science. It’s about time we embrace the fact we are one species that are 99.9% the same; male or female. Get over it! Start thinking as a global citizen and help shift the current paradigm, otherwise this nonsense will keep going on forever, or until the AI super-intelligence decides we aren’t worth being around. We need a worldview philosophy that acknowledges we are all on the same team. And T.E.A.M means; Together Everyone Achieves More. ☮️

I am irritated by how so many of these people who are 100% involved in creating this technology and just recently (changed their minds less than a few weeks ago) seem to think they should not be harshly critiqued by those who have been working and addressing the very issues that they suddenly realize will (not may) become a giant problem. They seem to think they are still the leaders who should be respected and responsible for fixing this problem. Meanwhile much of their pushback seems to come from a place of “don’t get upset with the real world problems just let’s regulate the way ‘our’ technological children are used and taught” as of course humans are so excellent at doing 🤨 It smacks of narrative gatekeeping by the very people who couldn’t or wouldn’t stop their roll forward when so many others affected by it were screaming it at the top of their lungs for decades. Now they suddenly have ethics and concerns. But the barn door has been removed, the animals are loose and the farmer is drunk with power on his porch thinking he can still run the farm.
