I used to watch Brum, at my bourding school back in 1994, the reason being that my school was a special one for kids with Autism (I have Aspergers) and yes I did also go to mainstream as well, where some of the other kids were somewhat 'less able' thus we would also watch the more 'younger shows' (as I used to call programs made for toddlers and babies) which the teachers would tape for them, and I think that we did have one or two of the VHS tapes as well (can't remember which ones though). As it stands I actually quite liked 'Brum' (yes me and my friends, who were on the 'more able' end of the spectrum did make the playground joke about his name...) and to this very day I remember the show fondly, not only as a show but also as a part of a very happy time in my life. As a long term Whovian (I go back as far as 1997!) is it just me or does Brum look a lot like a pint sized 'Bessie'???
Great vid. This brings me back to my early childhood, the end almost brought a tear to my eye with the kick-a** credit song. I will never forget the little yellow car that brought me happiness when I was a child.
Brum and the Helicopter (the season 2 premiere episode) was the first episode of Brum I saw as a toddler. Even I was astonished and amazed at the scene of Brum being lifted into the air by a helicopter - no CGI, all completely done in live-action!
For me, when it comes to Brum, I was for the most part someone who watched the three seasons that aired in the early 2000's, but I have also seen a few episodes of the first two ones with Toyah Willcox's narration. I honestly just accept those two sides of the series as different takes on the concept - the first two seasons being a simple one about Brum going around the Big Town taking part in some of the mundane and regular activities that the citizens do, while the later three being a fast-paced superhero comedy series where Brum goes around trying to stop the criminals and being a badass while going after them. I will definitely say that I'm not into the CGI reboot; it feels too safe and overly saccharine. But I can agree with everyone that the song "Brum, Brum Gets Things Done" is unquestionably the best thing to come out of the later three seasons; no denying how awesome it is. As I don't fully recognise what some people have against those seasons, feel free to explain why below.
I mean, there were some things with the 2000s series, that felt like it really just jumped the shark multiple times. And there were also some things that kind of rubbed people the wrong way (even myself included). The 90s one had a bit more of a wholesome and warming aspect, that I guess made it more timeless by comparison. Perhaps if they did some revival that was like a perfect blend of both aspects, and basically knew when to slow down and reel things in a bit, compared to the 2000s series that kind of felt like it didn't know when to stop, then maybe it'd probably fare better. Like, it can have some of its action regarding the local criminals, or something going wrong, in around half or so of its episodes (just without any major jump the shark moments), and the rest having that more laid back, slice of life aspect that went on in the 90s series. Possibly with even a few twists or spins to those formulas, like a more fast-paced action type of slice of life episode, revolving around a race/competition, and a more slower-paced, suspenceful or even slighty darker criminal episode, like Brum assisting a detective with solving a crime, or even an episode where Brum has to stop a mad bomber from causing chaos around town.
Though, with that last one about the mad bomber, and how that's still a touchy subject these days, considering stuff like the Taliban and all that, I'd imagine the criminal essentially rigging contraptions akin to what Kevin from Home Alone would slap together, and having those bombs be stink bombs as powerful as the "El Mondo stink bomb" from Ed, Edd n Eddy.
I grew up watching Brum in the early 2000's and I thought it was phenomenal as a kid! Brum is my absolute favorite childhood TV show I love to watch! 😊😊😁😁😁
1991/1994: "It was Brum's day for exploring the big town..." 2001-2002: "Shh... Brum's off to the big town... *_...B R U M!!!!!!"_* Man, what a difference ten years makes, huh?
*this show made me happy and happy when I saw it as a kid* _and same as that tractor that was grey and had a face lime bruh!_ This show is still amazing
I am very familiar with all those locations and even work in one of them. Fascinating to be reminded of the changes happening in Birmingham, right now.
I used to watch Brum Season 3, a lot as a kid. Honestly, knowing that previous seasons had a narrator makes me glad I grew up with season 3 because that would have been dumb.
I used to know Rex Garrod (the man who built and designed Brum ) RIP he passed away not all that long ago 😢 he controlled the car with a Radio controller
so sas he died of alzhimers he was in robot wars for a bit ,very clever guy worth having a look ,He also did a channel 4 program called the secret life of machines
I recalled Brum, but didn’t remember watching it, so I was watching this without feelings of nostalgia. Then 12:02 happened and I thought HOW COULD I FORGET THIS!?
I loved that " Brum, Brum gets things done " song! Now I know where some of that was ahem Brindley place and opposite the Symphony Hall and Sealife Centre
The format of the original episodes reminds me of the early Thomas and Friends episodes, while the design of Brum itself looks like it would fit well in Bob the Builder.
I'm 38 & remember burm so well as a kid! Living near Birmingham went to wheels! It looks terrible now closed! Brum hosted f1 cars 2 the city & life was so much better back then!!!!
I remember me and my siblings running up to the tv and slapping our hands on the screen when the ‘brum’ text came on screen so we could cover the R, and shout ‘BUM’
I remember Brum on CBeebies in 2003-2005!!! Same with Tots TV in 2004-2008!!! I’ve seen every episode of both (although the series of Brum was the Early 2000s series with the “Well Done Brum!” End Credits!!) here’s a fact about it Andrew Davenport was one of the Robbers!
2:53 GREAT SCOTT. It's Rosie And Jim The Original Series. My All Time Favourite ITV Studios And Central Independent Television And Ragdoll Productions Children's Live Action Coming Of Age Fantasy Musical Family Comedy Television Series. Thanks A Lot Mate. X
The version of Brum that was for TH-cam is made by Wildbrain which DHX bought Ragdol’s properties like Brum, Tots TV, etc. I remember watching Brum on TLC as part of a block with Discovery
I mostly got exposure to the 2000s seasons when it aired on TLC in the mornings. Though I didn't know those seasons had a rather lukewarm reception like Thomas Seasons 6 to 11. Plus it's funny to learn that the titular character's name is a reference to the city this was shot at. I always thought it's because the name sounded like the "vroom-vroom" sound we make when playing with toy cars.
Hi Ben - He was designed and built by Rex Garrod (he did a tv series in the 80s with Tim Hunkin called 'The secret life of machines' - available on TH-cam and also built Cassius on 'Robot Wars'). Brum was radio controlled by one of my ex colleagues, Brett Davis.
Something I only learn't after these two shows went off the air and I became way too old for Brum was that Rex Garod who created Casius from Robot Wars was the driver and or builder of Brum.
The 2001 version is the one I'm most familiar with. The episode 'Brum and the Naughty Dog' has always stuck with me for some reason. As have 'Brum and the Airport Adventure' and 'Brum and the Gymnast.'
I remember Brum, I remember an episode or clip where Brum took this person through a car wash, 5yo me really got a kick out of that, though my memory of it isn't too great (it must have been about 12-13 years ago, I was around 4-5 then). None of the 90s episodes looked familiar so my best guess is that it's from the 2001 series
And the guy in the overalls in the opening credits actually worked at the Bourton on the Water museum too, where I met him when I was a youngster, although I'd guess he is probably retired now 30 years after they first filmed him.
I could easily see a revival that was like a good blend of both the 90s and 2000s series, with its mix of slice-of-life and action focussed episodes (whilst knowing when to reel it in, compared to the 2000s series, that felt like it just didn't know when to stop), even having a few twists on the formulas in places, that I mentioned in another reply. Could even introduce new characters, as well as some classic ones, like Granny Slippers, Gorgious Gordon, Bob & Job, the tramp with the small guitar, Mr Brillow, Mr Ladidah, Mr Doolally and WPC Truncion, to name a few. Heck, I can easily imagine a few episode ideas with those characters, like a bit of a comedic take on the whole "one more step and he gets it" moment, when some group of arsonists cause some trouble, and one of them gets the idea to pretty much mess with Mr Brillow, considering he treats his gnomes like they're his children, or Brum having to catch a notorious theif, who was looking for a valuable antique trinket, only to have the twist be that Granny Slippers had the thing with her, completely unaware of its immense value, or even WPC Truncion having to deal with a loud-mouthed bully of a police officer, who was brought over from another town to help with things, as well as the ensuing embarassment the town's mayor and cheif of police would be in, when she and Brum pretty much issue the complaints about said officer's behaviour, and the obvious lack of background research that was put in, when they brought this policeman over to the big town. I could easily imagine a satisfying scene where WPC Truncion basically just really lets it rip on the officer, and basically giving her two pennies on the guy and showing him why he should not be trying her patience like she is. Possibly saying something along the lines of; "Now you listen here, you bloated dough-ball, you. I may not have been in as may life or death scuffles as you supposedly have in *insert town name here*, but I have earned more respect for my duities here in the big town, then you have probably clubbed someone over the head with this. *shows him her truncion* So you will know better, than to get me at the end of my rope. Understand?"
Yeah, I'll admit... Whilst the 4th series seems more like a revival of Brum in name only, and clearly seemed more generic than the first 3 series, I at least see it as harmless, mostly. And yeah, even if the videos I owned of Brum were from the 2001-2002 series... I certainly enjoy the ones from the 90s more. Especially when I had more warm memories from what episodes I managed to see on the air, at the time. Though, at least with the 3rd series, it had a memorable theme that played at the end of the episodes.
For my birthday when I was younger my parents got me a pedal car that looked like brum, my favourite toy ever loved that show (even though I didn't watch it until the 2000s ;P)
Brum is one of my favorite kid shows as a kid. I definitely agree with you. Brum should have a second chance to come back for more episode and series. The guy playing as The Big Town Robber name Andrew Davenport was one of the creators on that show.
haha I knew it was filmed in Brummy! Aren't there these spherical car-stopper thingys that he drives around at one point? My memories of Brum are very crude. For example, I never remembered music being in the opening. Edit: I had a copy of the 2000s show.
Hopefully restoring the brum model as it has seen some damage over the years In the episode with the gorilla That is very noticeable as his bonnet accidentally busted open
@@Northerner_Transport_Hub If they do make a reboot and have to build a new model, then I hope they base it off the season 1 appearance and add the sounds he made in season 1, mainly to give nostalgia.
Considering Brum's designer was Robot Wars contestant Rex Garrod, imagine if they did a crossover episode where Brum and Garrod's other iconic creation Cassius went on an adventure.
If Brum was brought back in a better CGI material, being made in a Student Film University, then it will look appealing. Plus, since Postman Pat and Horrid Henry had their own movie, Brum should have one but, not to be botched up!
Bobby McKenna No. My parents got rid of it at some point when we cleaned out our basement. A real shame, too. It was the only RC car I didn’t wreck, and I could drive it off-road because the wheels were big enough to cover gravel and other small obstacles.
If you want to see more of Rex Garrod, the man who designed and built Brum, go to Tim Hunkin's channel where he has uploaded remastered versions of The Secret Life Of Machines, in which he and Rex starred.
I 1st watched season 1 Brum on a VHS my Nana recorded for me and I enjoyed what I saw. Then I noticed VHS sales of the 2000s version and couldn't stand those episodes! I have mixed feelings about the choice to have the whole show narrated though, since apart from Brum, all the characters are real people who can talk behind the scenes. One thing that remained consistently enjoyable though was the character of Brum himself. I'd like to find out how he became so popular that everyone in Big Town knows his name
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated the early 00's Brum reboot as a kid. Though I do remember creating some crass "alternate" lyrics for the ending song. 😂
As well as all of His other Abilities, Brum can also Waterski and Pull a Large Speed Boat without fail. What a Car He is. Hope to see Him again soon, I plan to build My own Radio controlled Brum Car, Anyone got any suggestions on how to do so, I would appreciate it,. Great Video Mate as well.

when I was three years old living in the United States my parents would put this on because we’d get it over in the states and even back as a three year old I loved cars and I really loved the brum tv show I would watch it religiously whenever it was on my parents even taped it on VHS I still have that VHS tape that taped for me and some more I have a couple others my mom bought me the remote controlled Brum car I lost the car because I was very young at the time but somehow I still to this day I have the remote I don’t know how that happened but I just now found another RC Bram car on eBay with no remote so hopefully the remote works I’m going to put it on my shelf after I see if it works with my original remote first but Brum was a excellent show I really did enjoy it one of my favorites even to this day at 22 years old
This channel is how I learned the Brum I grew up with was the newest reboot (2001). We learning Brum lore today.

Hopefully restoring the brum model as it has seen some damage over the years
In the episode with the gorilla
That is very noticeable as his bonnet accidentally busted open
@@Northerner_Transport_Hub The season 3 model? wow, I didn't know it took so much damage bu most likely due to all the stunts it did.
@@GoldenSaddle agreed
@@Northerner_Transport_Hub If they do make a reboot and have to build a new model, then I hope they base it off the season 1 appearance and add the sounds he made in season 1, mainly to give nostalgia.
@@GoldenSaddle that would be BRUMtastic
No pun intended lol
I remember watching this when I was 4-5, still on video tapes.
Are you doing any more 'A Brief History' videos at all? I absolutely love these videos :)
Considering Brum's designer was Robot Wars contestant Rex Garrod, imagine if they did a crossover episode where Brum and Garrod's other iconic creation Cassius went on an adventure.
Yeah, the ending music video from the 2000s was great. I can’t believe that I forgot about it.
If Brum was brought back in a better CGI material, being made in a Student Film University, then it will look appealing. Plus, since Postman Pat and Horrid Henry had their own movie, Brum should have one but, not to be botched up!
Chris 3687 what would the plot be, then?
@@theSonicguy001 Probably a plot like a Wallace and Gromit short.
brum is the best i love brum and still watch it
Still today some times I want it back I saw it in 2006-2007 when I was a ween little baby
@@joshlia6469 I used to love that show when I was a baby.
I have a feeling it was filmed at bbc's pebble mill and mailbox
... a car crossing the road?
why did I never question that?
StephenDHenderson+ he's a small car.
Chris I agree he’s a small car
Brum gave me memories when it aired on CBeebies back in the 2000s, and so does Teletubbies and Tweenies.
I loved Brum when I was little, and my parents got me a Brum RC car and I loved it!!!!
Do you still have it
Bobby McKenna No. My parents got rid of it at some point when we cleaned out our basement. A real shame, too. It was the only RC car I didn’t wreck, and I could drive it off-road because the wheels were big enough to cover gravel and other small obstacles.
I've remembered having that as well.
I grew up with the Dutch version, but I can agree with you on the Toyah Willcox one. The voice she was replaced with isn't exactly pleasant anymore.
My god, that children's collection VHS at 07:40 brings back memories!
I like the Police Officers from Brum. Stop in the name of the law!
i think brum secretly made my brother a hoon with the engine revving
Ahh yes my childhood show even tho it’s a old show I had many dvds
I’m 14 now but yet brum was still on when I was very little
If you want to see more of Rex Garrod, the man who designed and built Brum, go to Tim Hunkin's channel where he has uploaded remastered versions of The Secret Life Of Machines, in which he and Rex starred.
Brum also had an album!
they should do some more episodes of brum
Those thieves in the bank scene, or "robbers" as the show calls them, are the most clichè thieves i've ever seen XD
I like to request a brief history of one of my other favorite BBC Children's programmes which is Bodger and Badger.
I used to watch back in 2003 on my vhs
As well as all of His other Abilities, Brum can also Waterski and Pull a Large Speed Boat without fail. What a Car He is. Hope to see Him again soon, I plan to build My own Radio controlled Brum Car, Anyone got any suggestions on how to do so, I would appreciate it,. Great Video Mate as well.
This video was great!
please do a brief history of Teletubbies!
What's everyone's fav episode? Mine is the crane one
R.I.P. Rex Garrod, 1943 - 2019, whom built Brum.
That was the boomerang uk sound from early 2000 to mid 2004

brum is now a car that is the size of a normal car in cartoons. and is literally a youtube kids car now
forgot to mention that he is in an anthropormorphic world where there is a anthropormorphic monkey who is a scientist. and they go on fictional adventures. and brum is a normal sized car
Bloody Brilliant!
i like when he was chasing the baddies the best
when I was three years old living in the United States my parents would put this on because we’d get it over in the states and even back as a three year old I loved cars and I really loved the brum tv show I would watch it religiously whenever it was on my parents even taped it on VHS I still have that VHS tape that taped for me and some more I have a couple others my mom bought me the remote controlled Brum car I lost the car because I was very young at the time but somehow I still to this day I have the remote I don’t know how that happened but I just now found another RC Bram car on eBay with no remote so hopefully the remote works I’m going to put it on my shelf after I see if it works with my original remote first but Brum was a excellent show I really did enjoy it one of my favorites even to this day at 22 years old
