Let's Rank the Brenner Era - Thomas & Friends Seasons 17-21

A look back on the Brenner Era seasons of Thomas now that some time has passed. Here are my current thoughts.

Unfortunately, I had already "grown out of _Thomas"_ by the time this era started. But after watching a good chunk of the episodes after discovering this channel, I can safely say that this was definitely the Renaissance of _Thomas and Friends._ it got the closest to feeling like the Early Model Era, just in a different medium.
In my case, I actually stopped watching Thomas for like 2 years since I felt burned out from the Miller Era (especially Season 15), but episodes like Henry's Hero definitely roped me right back in.
same, I had no idea it got good again
The Brenner Era team understood the 3 strikes formula in every single episode would never ever work and I'm grateful for that
It first started during between Series 3(1991-92) and 5(1998)

Andrew Brenner and Ian McCue really wanted to make Thomas more Classic and they did great. While the duds are low, but the highs are amazing.
But then Ian McCue would ruin Thomas with bwba.

@@ryanfuller912 I genuinely wish that Percy was female instead of male (but still have her be named Percy and have her look and sound identical to her male counterpart in every single way) so Henry would’ve been better treated in the Brenner era and also so Edward would’ve had more starring episodes in the Brenner era while also staying perfectly in character since they would’ve been the 4th and 5th boys instead of the 5th and 6th boys.

@@ryanfuller912 I’m dead serious, Percy being female (But still named Percy) would’ve definitely had benefited the franchise and the other main characters A LOT in the long run, especially Henry and Edward.
I stopped watching during the transition to CGI (with Misty Island being the last Thomas Product I ever watched before I grew out of it). Tug has reignited my love for the show and I really can’t wait to watch these Brenner seasons.
I wish I could go back and rewatch these seasons

I love the Brenner Era, I love The Unlucky Tug and I love this video, the Brenner Era is flawed but deserves much love and I’m glad someone gave it some.
So do I. The Brenner era deserves more love with no complaints.
Same here, most of my favorite Thomas' movies were written by Brenner
A lot of people say Daisy was great in this era but I also think Edward was great in tis era. He was a great father figure to Thomas and Phiilip and I love his realtionship with Gordon and James. He was always in his character and 0 bad episodes.
Imo I actually really like CGI Daisy, Edward, Duck, Mavis, Salty, Cranky, BillBen, Toad and Duncan. James and Gordon were extremely exaggerated besides examples like S21 Gordon or S20 James, thomas emily and percy were inconsistent, Oliver and most narrow gauge were after thoughts, and dear God henry and toby wtf went wrong

Ah, the Brenner Era. The arguably better seasons of Thomas. Despite it not having the same feel as the classic era of Thomas, it managed to steal some of that magic and throw it back into the slowly dying show.
Actually I think it's far better than the Classics.

I really do miss this era of Thomas & Friends. I remember watching a clip of Wayward Winston on TH-cam back in 2013, and it caught my interest more than the REALLY bad Miller episodes. I digged a little further and found the full episode as well as some more episodes. Whenever I look back on them, I feel nostalgia. The first five to seven seasons will always be my favorite era of the show, but this era is a close second. Not every episode from Seasons 17-21 is perfect, but I can say it is something I can rewatch and find a lot of enjoyment, which is a lot more what I have to say about it than the Miller Era. I do feel a little sad whenever I remember what came after Season 21, but Seasons 17-21 will forever be a special era to me.
It's an improvement, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to save the show's decline
To this day I think the Brenner era was more respectfull with the Awdry's version of Thomas as the classic era.
Thomas and James's season 19 to 21 has really improved.

This era is a big improvement from the Miller era.

All joking aside, that is very true.
As someone who holds the model era sacrosanct to the cgi era; these seasons made me actually like the cgi era more than I’d ever done before.

The first video I watched from this channel and it’s still good
It feels like each episode battled for what they wanted. Some writers wanted flanderised characters and too much humour while others wanted to write more heartful and passionate episodes
I think the flanderisation was more the demand of the higher ups at Mattel.

Maybe the Brenner Era Retrospective video in the far future will also be the episode ranking video of this period.

I absolutely love the Brenner era. Improved so much on Thomas after seasons 8-16. Shame Mattel had other plans, but I'll never forget Brenner for how awesome it was. Initially, I wanted to call season 21 my favourite season, because I enjoyed 2017, but I'll go with season 20 now. It's absolutely awesome, so was season 21. My ranking for the Brenner era is actually the same as yours. 🙂

After All Engines Go Mattel should really be acquired along with the media franchises by NBCUniversal with Hit Entertainment's successor being Universal Television as soon as possible.
Me too. Can't watch anything from Series 8-12. Haven't seen from 13 onwards, maybe I should check out the Brenner era someday.....

It’s crazy to think people will be calling BWBA nostalgic in 5 years. I still remember when season 20 was airing for the first time like it was yesterday.
Honestly I think "Signal crossed" is overhated.

Before rewatching this today, I forgot he even existed, and it was so weird seeing him, it was like looking at a hole new character 😂

9:32: I would say [just] for [the sake of] merchandise. As for him never appearing again (9:52) is beyond me. Believe it or not, I actually would've liked to've seen Hugo compete in the Great Railway Show, but, then again, the race would've just been too predictable.
I feel like Hugo was a subtle way of saying "even if you have a Brener era story you will have a Hit story"

Yeah, I remember this. The one thing that irked, irritated and frustrated me to no end was - you guessed it - how the very WORST of James was brought out so much that I began to hate this character with a burning passion and still most likely do.
But do you what I think is the worst part of this era? It's the fact that it was losing popularity thanks to Paw Patrol (or in my eyes Piss Portrayed) if this new show hadn't existed, do you think children would've continued watching Thomas, and the Brenner era would continue for generations?
I like these types of characters (James, Rainbow Dash, Kai, etc.) but hate it when they become "the selfish one" for no reason, because that isn't good writing.

Thomas Series 21 might be your last series or dvd to watch but season 24 has another better ending for the royal engine it has many callbacks to Thomas’s past from magic railroad your hated movie, gallant old, lady hats birthday and more even its not your favorite season you should give it a chance and go over it in the retrospective of the seasons❤😊
Not gonna lie, Andrew Brenner kinda looks like Sir Topham Hatt! I wonder if the universe was saying something...
I grew up with the brenner era and Miller and watched it all when it was brand new. The amount of re runs of James the rescue engine and the chicken pox episode where too much

I definitely agree that the poke funny moments with sir tophum hat is a little too much, I cringe at most of them 😅
Here are my Ranking of the Brenner Seasons and what music I would use:
5. Season 21 (Streamlining/The Most Important Thing is Being Friends)
4. Season 17 (KotR Opening/It’s Gonna Be a Great Day)
3. Season 18 (Monsters Everywhere/Our Tale of the Brave)
2. Season 19 (Never Overlook a Little Engine/We Make a Team Together)
1. Season 20 (BMM Opening/Blue Mountain Quarry/Blue Mountain Mystery)
Thomas and Friends should've end with Series 20 unless Andrew Brenner wants to adapt Mountain Engines and Very Old Engines (the only books in The Railway Series not to be televised). Why on earth didn't he think of that? Anyway, here's my ranking;

2. Series 17
1. Series 20
No not until we get back all the old characters like Boco (even though it's already too late thanks to AEG)
He might've, but keep in mind that writers don't always get to decide which scripts get made into episodes.

@Carmine Lago Season 8 is the least bad of the HIT era in my opinion, really solid episodes in there like Gordon Takes Charge, Edward the Great, Squeak, Rattle and Roll, and Halloween

The hit era is good

Interesting how the classic series is the first 5 seasons and the Brenner Era is also 5 seasons. Obviously a coincidence but I find that very interesting indeed. If you include season 6 and 7 for okay/good seasons to watch then roughly half the seasons of Thomas and friends aren't really that great which is just sad in my opinion. It gives a bad impression on a show that was once great and loved by all not just kids.
Seasons 6 and 7 are officially in the classic era.

But the UK voices sound better.
I actually agree with you, and it’s not because I grew up watching the UK dub. A lot of the US voices for the characters just sound too goofy and too American for Thomas in my opinion.
@@joshuaW5621 well, I'm glad someone sees it that way besides me. I always thought they were so fitting, despite edward, james, gordon, henry, percy AND the fat controller all being cast by the same voice in the UK dub.
I grew up with Brenner early ones
Just my own opinion, but Brenner was the Donald Trump of the Thomas series when he became head writer.
I loved how he made Thomas great again.
Rocky Rescue should’ve been an Edward episode, not a Thomas episode. I’m genuinely annoyed and frustrated that Rocky Rescue wasn’t an Edward starring episode where Edward teaches the Sodor search and rescue team how to work together to re rail Rocky.

The Brenner Era is the best, season 17 and 18 are most improvements than seasons 13-16 especially since the episodes are between good and mostly medicore. But seeing sir tophan hat being poking in the fun, characters flanderization as james since he's a insufferable selfish prick. Something i don't like!.

TH-cam screwed him over.
Never been able to get into the CGI show. Tried and every time, either stupid scripts or stupid voices or both put me off.
And it talks down to its audience (which I get because they're aiming for an infant audience rather than a general audience in CGI, but I still hate it; I'm not infant.)
While this seems better than the other CGI seasons, I'm not convinced it'll better enough, sounds like season 20 is the only one worth bothering even considering watching.
Then how were you able to sit through Magic Railroad and the Hit era?

He has more character than some of the one offs from the Railway Series and season 5, I’ll give him that.
Not any offense, a few downhill things for this era since season 19 are: not much narration, sir Topham Hatt suffering, Henry nervous, Emily, James show-off, Toby small roles as usual almost, gags of Thomas (tank engine, cheeky, shunt), Percy coward with mail at night, James not getting a new UK voice until 2017, 7-berth sheds in TAB, Toby not having his original model series bell sound again still (a desperate edition that I need), eyebrows and engines’ sizes, and more. Although, good things are references to model series, nice movies, Henrietta, permanent lamps, James brake-pipe upwards (an edition needed in previous seasons), returns of old characters, and other things. And I don’t find the big world era bad too much. (I just wish that Sodor was remodeled in another part of the ocean.)
Lamps for steam team, James’s brake-pipes upwards edition in previous seasons, and 6-sheds needed on TAB are also desperate editions that I want
