I am 61 years old and grew up with the Thunderbirds and some of the other shows. While Thunderbirds are my favorite, Fireball XL5 is a close 2nd. And the theme to Thunderbirds still gets me even now......
Because I spent almost 30 Years as a Member of a Rescue Organisation and Thunderbirds was a favourite Show of Mine, My Friends took liberties in the Naming of My Transport Vehicles. My Car got the Nickname of “Thunderbird 1” because it carried Me and it was always the First of My Vehicles, to Leave Home Base and the First of My Vehicles to Arrive on Site, in any potential “Rescue Zone”. One of its other Missions was to locate a “Safe Landing Zone” (a Big Parking Space) where My Trailer, “Thunderbird 2” (which always came behind) could ‘Park Up’ and deploy it’s Load, via the rear mounted drop down Ramp. “Thunderbird 2” being the Heavy Lift Body, which carried and deployed another “Thunderbird Vehicle”. My Electric Mobility Scooter became “The Quad” (because it had 4 Wheels) and was a Thunderbird Vehicle of Indeterminate Purpose, other than to carry Me and a few (Rescue) Supplies (Food and Drink mainly, but also some Camera Equipment). The combination of a Loaded “Quad” on My Cage Trailer (“Thunderbird 2”) became known as “Pod 3”. Bringing “Pod 3” thus meant that I was bringing My Electric Mobility Scooter with Me, Loaded onto “Thunderbird 2”, arriving at the “Rescue Zone” behind “Thunderbird 1”. This whole situation caused (& still causes) much Humour among My Friends.
I'm 65 now and still love these shows. As a child, they caused me to become interested in science and aviation. My life as a professional pilot was very rewarding. I can't thank the Andersons enough.
Glad it is still with us !,! I was 10 years old when it first came to my afternoon television. Here we are nearly into 2020... and I am still fascinated .
I was living in Okinawa in 1966 and Thunderbird was huge! I bought up every Thunderbird model released by Imai Kagaku and kept a scrapbook of photos gathered from Japanese boys' magazines. It was the first time I obsessed over a television series to that extent. I still have the original Tracy Island model after almost 60 years.
My dad grew up with Thunderbirds in the 70s. He taped the episodes when they reaired in the 90s and shared them with me. I was obsessed with Thunderbirds as a kid. I think the tracy island toy being out of stock was why my dad built me one from scratch. I still have it. Mine was definitely better than the store bought one.
The one thing that everyone forgets about Anderson. The man HATED puppets. My favourite quote from him was "I always wanted to do live action. So, when i was given Four Feather Falls, i thought "If i do this REALLY well, they'll let me do whatever i want." Nope, they just kept making me do things with puppets..."
I am 65 and I still love the Thunderbirds. I get sort of emotional when I think about how there should be an International Rescue in real life...we sure could use it. This show brings back good memories and was and still is entertaining.
What a treat to see a revival of Thunderbirds in its original format, all high tec sets and BIG explosions. I was a big fan of all the Gerry Anderson series from early sixties, happy times.
Thank you for this wonderful storyline of that great childhood memories. In the 1994-1997, it was on BBC, and later on the Belgian channel vtm in 2000. I always was excited too see every episode of it. Full of action and good storytelling in that. The movie was a big failure. I never seen it, but heard and read about it. I makes me young again too see this over and over again. 😁👌🏼👍🏼
I remember shooting out of bed on a Saturday morning to get my weekly fill of Thunderbirds as a kid! Innocent and great days they were, and a show about something positive that captured our imaginations. No shooting and killing like video games today. It made rescue and saving people's lives something cool and exciting. Perhaps that is why it still has such appeal with people after all these years?

For the longest time I thought the Thunderbirds were a show made in Japan and brought into the U.S. Same with Supercar. This was MUST see tv for me way back when. Well done Brits! 👍👍👍
as i was growing up in the sixties , enjoy and watching gerry anderson tv programmes, amazing models, think back no computers , now i am 63, purchased most gerry anderson tv series as still like watch them
I enjoyed the shows when I was 8 years old absolutely captivated me and now to see it on TH-cam well that's just really sharp thank you so much for the review nice to look back
I saw it once at the cinema, thought it was decent at the time, but looking back, yeah it sucks. The worst movie I’ve ever seen BY FAR is Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. It is one big insult to one of cinema’s best loved franchises!
@JULIE COLBY The 2004 film?! No, don't agree. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen; but it was bad enough that I wish it had never been made. The Script was the main problem.
I'm 18 now. When I was growing up (so about 5), I watched the old Supermarionation series on TV. Never saw the film until I was about 9, and, to be honest, didn't notice the redesigns that much. The new series has yet to grow on me, but it'll get there eventually. Dad's fault. he was about 5 when the originals were on TV, and he got me and my brother into it. It was the bane of Mum's life though, cos I kept creating scenes across the floor in my bedroom.
What about the 3 episodes that were audio releases only but now a team have used that to recreate 3 new episodes with the same (or newly made) puppets and sets so it's faithful to the original? Not sure when it will be released but I saw a youtube video that showed the making of it and it was fantastic, just like watching it from the 60's.
The series was inspired by the 1963 Lengede mining disaster in (West) Germany. Many workers had become trapped underground and the world's media assembled as different attempts were made to get them out over time (a bit like with those Thai cave boys in 2018). Watching on TV in Britain as things unfolded over several days, Gerry Anderson pondered making a TV show about a specialist `international rescue' team who could solve such situations anywhere.
I absolutely loved the show in the early 1970's (I was 5 in '70), So was kind of excited to see the film when it came out in 2004 when my son (then 8 yrs old) wanted to see it. I remember being kind of tired when we went; The movie started and just WOULDN'T END.. So, as my son watched the movie, i "cat-napped" through pretty much the whole thing, to such a point, I don't even recognize the kid in the film who, by this video, was a big part of it. Yes, the movie was a good "sleeper".. and my son, now short of 22) cannot even remember much of it anyhow lol...
2:22 Does anyone know if the first several episodes exist at all in their original 25 mins versions before additional material were filmed to extend the episodes? Or do they only exist in their 50 mins formats? While you can probably tell where new footage were included in some scenes, it'd still be interesting to see how the first several episodes would've looked in their 25 mins presentations.
Having been a fan of Thunderbirds since 1965 I agree that the 2004 fil missed the mark completly. Despite the awful remodelling of the craft you have Alan as a schoolboy, Tin-tin as a juvenile and that god-awful Firmin character, the son of Brains. Jeff leaves the base, which would be a no no in real situations.
Thunderbirds always amazed me when I was young in the early 2000s, at the time I enjoyed the movie, and for me it is a bit nostalgic as it's from when I grew up.
I devoured every episode of "Stingray" and that barely matched the level of my childhood fandom of the original "Thunderbirds" -- the stories, the action, the onscreen scifi ships, and the mind-blowing modelmaking (and usually explosive un-making ) were everything I could've asked for in a TV show. I was really looking forward to the 2004 film and nearly cried when I saw it; someone got the idea, "It's a kids' show, make it relatable by making the young kids the heroes and while you do it strip away as much of the original spirit of the show so we can make more money off it with our version's spinoffs and merch!" Uggh. The new animated series is pretty good and definitely echoes the spirit of the original show... but all those incredible models & miniatures gave the original a certain je ne sais quoi that set it on a pedestal it resolutely refuses to vacate (although it shares a lot of space with "Captain Scarlet" for similar reasons).
I discovered Thunderbirds in the 90's when they were aired again although my father also adored it as a kid. It blew my mind, there just wasn't anything like it on TV. The weird technology, the awesome designs and the great toys... plus epic explosions. The original movies were pretty good to, that modern movie was an absolute disgrace. Hopefully you have checked out Firestorm.
I love the original puppet show, I grew up watching VHS copies. We even had that playset. I really enjoyed the 2004 movie (but I was really young, don't hate me). I watched the first season of the CGI series a while back, and I really enjoyed it. Fits very well with what I liked about the original, but updated it for modern audiences. To me, that's totally fine. I may not find all the episodes amazing, especially as they are marketed towards kids, but I like it.
I was the Same although I watched the puppet version after watching the movie which I liked (I was also only a kid) I watched the first couple of episodes of the new thunderbirds and liked it but I felt it really wasn't for me so havent watched it recently
The original 60's series ...Best kids TV series ever made!! the 2004 movie was pants and sorry to say it but so is the new CGI re boot. Everyone is fed up with CGI these days, You simply cannot compete with the model work etc. of Derek Meddings, The man was a genius!
I was born in the mid 90's and grew up with the re-runs on the BBC, it was easily my favourite show back then, and still holds up even now. I think I still have the first season on DVD somewhere. I liked some of the 2004 movie, the story was awful, as were the TB2, TB4 & TB5 redesigns, but some of the TB1 and TB3 shots and scenes were amazing
2:55 It's not the main ship, it was the first to be built (Either the first to start construction or finish construction, I can't remember which though) 3:50 Actually only Alan and John rotate shifts, nobody else does
A life long fan of the series and all the Anderson shows, the only thing I don't like about the latest incarnation is that it doesn't reflect the actual physics of the real world, which the original actually did. Modern CGI often does not replicate real acceleration, inertia, momentum, etc. and being an engineer, I see those things LOL The 60's was an impressive decade to grow up in!
Few things to say: The original 1965 show was my favourite show of my childhood. The 2004 movie was absolutely horrible. I like the new 2015 50th anniversary Thunderbirds.
I read that the reason Thunderbirds Are Go failed was because people in the 60's thought why should they spend good money paying to see Thunderbirds on the big screen when they could watch it at home.
In the 1970s the show was for many years on end transmitted at 6am on Sydney TV. It was great waking up early to catch an episode. In the days before some idiot would eat a bat and send the whole world into lockdown
I had never even heard of his series until reading your comment and looking him up! Despite us sharing the same titles I think our videos are quite different in style. I like his approached of being fast and quick for most things but I like to take a little more time with mine, thanks for making me aware of him though! I'll probably watch a few more :)
I grew up slightly after that time frame. It looks vaguely familiar. But the small towns I lived in had one TV station and a couple more if you were lucky enough to have a really good antenna. It seems like the kind of thing I would have liked, though -- like Johnny Quest, but with real fire.
The Thunderbirds are the best l have the Mini figures of the Tracy Family and the talking dolls...Scott, Virgil and Alan...l love this show and others so much...it's like they made my dolls come alive..FAB!!!
Maybe I look back on it with rose tinted glasses, but Thunderbirds 2004 is kinda underated to me, I personally enjoy it a lot and I think it works well for what it is
there was also an anime series in the early 80s called Thunderbirds 2086 - I remember watching a few episodes of that and I give credit to the soundtrack and how epic the animation looks despite its occasional stiff movements, but the entire cast of characters was replaced, as was the vehicle collection But yeah, the classic series is the one I shall remember the most
Johnno9989 compeltely forgot about 2086! I remember reading about it before but it slipped my mind! But yeah the classic and reboot was my main focus! ☺
I guess one can't fit everything in. Mind you, I don't think a lot of people remember 2086 that much. BTW, I saw your review on 2016, totally agreed with it, and speaking of 2016 and Thunderbirds, can you believe the year killed off Sylvia Anderson as well?
There was one more good thing out of that 2004 film - Sophia Myles' Lady Penelope. She was almost perfect in that with her characterisation, and Ron Cook's Parker wasn't too bad either.
Tbh I prefer the CGI reboot of Captain Scarlet although both shows are inferior to their originals but New Captain Scarlet had ideas I wanted to see explored in the original show, along with Motion Capture being more appealing than full CG, but it hasn’t aged amazingly. Having said that the 2015 Blu-Ray release looked superb! Plus having Captain Scarlet & The Return of the Mysterons with the original voices of Scarlet and Blue is a great bonus feature to include even if it’s only in 480p quality.
FAB! I must have missed that one. I picked up the original box set recently. It was great watching them again. I was gutted when I finished the box set. For its time, it was very well done.
It was beyond terrible. Obviously Johnathan Frakes either NEVER watched the original show OR totally missed the point of it. He gets completely lambasted for the horrific failure of that movie to this day and justifiably so.
Thunderbirds was meant to have been revived in the late 2000s but Michael Grade who was the chairman at ITV blocked it from happening because he didn't want ITV to make children's programming despite much of children's programming generating high income from international sales, merchandise and Cosgrove Hall which ITV owned who were producing programmes for other channels like the BBC, channel 5 and Nickelodeon.
What about the Thunderbirds 1965 project? As part of the 50th anniversary in 2015, they made three new episodes based on audio episodes that were made during the original series and filmed them with the classic style. I loved watching Thunderbirds repeats during the 90s and I still love the show. Thunderbird 2 is my favourite and Virgil Tracy is my favourite character. Oh, and I preferred David Holliday's voice as Virgil than Jeremy Wilkin. Wilkin was okay, I had nothing against him as Virgil. But I just felt Holliday's deeper voice was better suited. May they both rest in peace.
I just got the DVD yesterday from ebay. I could rave on about how everything looks original, the voices the puppets, the sets, but let's just say this, "Exactly like 3 more episodes from the original series." That's all it is and everything I could have wished for! Stunning.
I am 61 years old and grew up with the Thunderbirds and some of the other shows. While Thunderbirds are my favorite, Fireball XL5 is a close 2nd. And the theme to Thunderbirds still gets me even now......

That intro theme, with that Barry Gray score was superb. It was merely a kids show, yet it had one of the best 'unskippable' openings ever made.
Fairly new to the 1960’s show….love it! It’s theme is right up there with JQuest! Magnificent!

fantastic tv-series.
Few things to say:
The original 1965 show was my favourite show of my childhood.
The 2004 movie was absolutely horrible.
I like the new 2015 50th anniversary Thunderbirds.
Where can I watch this in the US?... It looks like the kids show I always wanted but never had.
Adam F try dailymotion
I read that the reason Thunderbirds Are Go failed was because people in the 60's thought why should they spend good money paying to see Thunderbirds on the big screen when they could watch it at home.
So right about Busted's song
In the 1970s the show was for many years on end transmitted at 6am on Sydney TV. It was great waking up early to catch an episode. In the days before some idiot would eat a bat and send the whole world into lockdown
Those three shows were prerunners starkrek seaquest was another show that was ahead of its time
Gotta love how they just have a random space station in orbit
Hey ya know that your show has the same name as footofaferret's very popular series right?
I had never even heard of his series until reading your comment and looking him up! Despite us sharing the same titles I think our videos are quite different in style. I like his approached of being fast and quick for most things but I like to take a little more time with mine, thanks for making me aware of him though! I'll probably watch a few more :)
I grew up slightly after that time frame. It looks vaguely familiar. But the small towns I lived in had one TV station and a couple more if you were lucky enough to have a really good antenna. It seems like the kind of thing I would have liked, though -- like Johnny Quest, but with real fire.
And I only discovered recently that the Tracy's first names were based on the original Mercury astronauts....
The Thunderbirds are the best l have the Mini figures of the Tracy Family and the talking dolls...Scott, Virgil and Alan...l love this show and others so much...it's like they made my dolls come alive..FAB!!!
Maybe I look back on it with rose tinted glasses, but Thunderbirds 2004 is kinda underated to me, I personally enjoy it a lot and I think it works well for what it is
I love International Rescue!
Thunderbirds epic moment? My vote is the oil refinery explosion at the end of title in every episode. _that_ is Thunderbirds!
there was also an anime series in the early 80s called Thunderbirds 2086 - I remember watching a few episodes of that and I give credit to the soundtrack and how epic the animation looks despite its occasional stiff movements, but the entire cast of characters was replaced, as was the vehicle collection
But yeah, the classic series is the one I shall remember the most
Johnno9989 compeltely forgot about 2086!
Ok now i actually might wanna watch thunderbirds.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't Gerry Anderson The same guy who created " Space Precinct"
You are correct!
Yes, and
stingray,
supercar,
fireballXL5,
Joe 90,
Space 1999,
Danger UFO,
amongst others...
Thunderbirds 2004 was horribly cringy
I still haven't seen it fully, just the odd clips. I refuse to watch it as its isn't thunderbirds its just hollywood crap.
FAB! I must have missed that one. I picked up the original box set recently. It was great watching them again. I was gutted when I finished the box set. For its time, it was very well done.
was not good lack a plot story
It was beyond terrible. Obviously Johnathan Frakes either NEVER watched the original show OR totally missed the point of it. He gets completely lambasted for the horrific failure of that movie to this day and justifiably so.
The one line, "Tintin, you're blossoming" 😣😣😖😖🤮🤮
Also... 6-year-old me worshipped Busted. Glad you also remember it.
Love it
What was the name of the adult or rated R version?
Stunning.
I remember when i was a youngster in 1999 and getting the tracy island set think i still might have it xD
This is what World America Team Police got the style from Thunderbirds
4:40 I see what you did with the music!
