Much of the Imperial Truth ( The religion surrounding the Emperor) was actually started by one of his Sons, the Primarxh of the XVII's legion, the Word Bearers, Lorgar. He was the one who propageted the religion. Ironically his legion was the cause of the Great Crusade.

Because he took a shortcut he didn't know was his father's project in order to warn him about another of his sons, he inadvertently caused a massive civil war, a large casualty number, the deaths of at least two primarchs, and the god-emperor of man being heavily crippled and almost killed

Well, cape and armor are design choices. The halo is a personal shield in reality, but also could be a religious symbol painted by artists to give him the image of a saint, not unlike the actual saints of Christianity.
No excuses for the mane though. Anyone with a hair as lustrous like that has to be worshiped.

Well, the Emperor banning religions wasn't primarily because it divides humanity as it empower Chaos.
One of his main goal in unifying humanity as an empire of logic and reason is to completely eradicate Chaos, as it feed upon mortal emotions.
He know he can certainly unify humanity much quicker if he just show off his powers and let them think of him as a god, but that would defeat the purpose of the entire Crusade in the first place.
Wouldn't that create a chaos god of unbelief? The four chaos gods exist because of the emotions and beliefs of living things in the universe. Would't not believing in superstition breed a chaos god too?

Yeah, I read a theory where it states that the Emperor is actually in the warp slowly becoming stronger through humanity's worship and that the corpse of the emperor sitting on the golden throne is just an empty husk used to guide the ships through the warp.
@Amber Hoke its true. The husk acts as an anchor for him and Gillum and even spoke to him. Also, in a recent campaign he straight up manifested through the body of one of his followers to help the Imperium.
Unfortunately it was only temporary and they died in the process.

Update Oct/2/2020: For some context, it's actually a planned novel series regarding four vast multiversal factions gaining and losing territories every day through various ways in an ever-expanding Omniverse. Every four Multiversal factions have their own ways of maintaining their own controlled territories except for one. If the galaxy is primitive or lack of intelligent lifeforms, then it's a free real estate. If that said galaxy has any source of advanced civilization, then the general plan is to park outside the galaxy and either send in representatives or Scouts.
Eye see how that could be an issue.

I'd like to believe that too, but why would Big E teleport guardsmen up to Horus' ship when he's already bringing two loyal primarchs and a posse of custodes and spehs mahreens? Any baseline human would've immediately been driven insane just by being near Horus "Why can't I hold all this chaos?" Lupercal.

Great video. The bit about a Custodes being the one to be killed by Horus and thusly giving the Emperor the time he needed is debated. Some lore says it was a Space Marine in Terminator Armor while others say it was Ollanius Pious, a guardsman. I lean towards it being Ollanius because it is a better story. I believe there's actually a story featuring Ollanius Pious.

Ollanius Pius is perpetual in Horus Heresy and will most likely get killed for the Emperor during Siege of Terra. Besides that he has no other powers. I think they did that to justify Ollanius being on Vengeful Spirit since normal mortal would get killed in the very second they got there.

It is so shitty that they replaced Ollanius Pius with a custodian.
Ollanius Pius will forever be canon in my head as the manliest man to ever exist in all fiction.
You can at least headcanon that he did the sacrifice first, with a Terminator and the aforementioned Custodes doing it afterwards so get equal praise or some bull.
It is said that during the fatal dual between Sanguinius and Horus, Sanguinius struck a blow that weakened Horus' armour just enough to allow the Emperor to finish Horus. Without his noble sacrifice the Horus heresy would have never ended. Also Sanguinius knew he was going to die after he saw a vision so I guess it's okay.
I love this setting, it's so hardcore it's almost comical but that's kind of the appeal.

The sacrifices are likely so much not for him as much of a way to keep the wrap tear closed so he himself doesn't need to do so.

Thank you so much for tackling this series! I used to love 40k when I was a kid but was too young to really understand/access all of the lore. Looking forward to hearing your take on it all!
I'd love to see the duel of the holy emperor and horus, the way he keeps holding back despite all the injuries caused by horus. And seeing the loyal custodian come to his emperor's aid only to get struck down by horus, I wanna see the rage in the emperor's eyes as horus draws the last straw with his action.
Which makes no sense since the Emperor was totally fine with condemning huge numbers of people, including civilians, to mass slaughter.
A Side note that the other "Emperor" that supposedly leads an Empire that is comparable or possibly greater than the Imperium of 40k is the God Emperor Leto II of the Dune Series. WHich the God emperor himself was very likely heavily influenced by in many ways. As well as 40k taking a lot creative influences from the Dune series.

14:58 Ahh man, I wish they manage to put _Ollanius Pius_ (A imperial Guard and this scene/part was retconned many times as what the internet say) there, but if he was there, it won't make sense thou.
[Long-summary read, maybe]
_"Firstly his introduction is a bit of a retcon, since Ollanius wasn't in the original battle (read the Slaves to Darkness book) where the Emperor teleported to Horus' bunker (not flagship) and fought him there. Then when he was introduced, he was said to have originally sacrificed himself during Horus' assault on the Imperial Palace, placing himself between the Emperor and Horus (which would mean in that version Horus broke through), which makes sense, so they had to change it. The next story the Emperor fought Horus in Horus' command bunker again, teleporting in with Imperial Fists and Custodes, and while having a bunker on the ground makes it entirely possible that Pius was there (especially since the traitor legions were busy at the palace walls) it's fairly unlikely. Then they changed it again, this time having Emps board Horus' flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, along with a company of Imperial Fist terminators and Custodes, no Pius this time due to the fact that a Guardsmen would probably die the second they arrive there. At no point from here on out is Ollanius ever mentioned to have boarded the Vengeful Spirit, though the idea of a heroic sacrifice was kept, GW replaced Pius with a Spehss Mahreen Terminator, which wasn't that bad but then they retconned out the Terminator with an Adeptus Custodes, which is SIX KINDS OF LAME."_ - *1d4chan*
Considering the Horus heresy series seems to be included him as a perpetual, I wouldn't be surprised that when the last book releases he does it

My theory is that the Emporer doesnt have a problem with faith and religion in a vacuum. His excuses of it dividing people is just a facade. The actual reason for his campaign against faith is because actions and emotions that stem from faith (prayer, etc) actually directly fuel and power the gods of Chaos, and that those who already believe in higher powers will be very easy to manipulate into serving the gods of Chaos

Very good video, I am new to warhammer 40k. I also heard about the games but the lore before that is mind blowing... this universe is infinite.
So here's what I'm gathering as a new-comer to the 40K fandom. The Emperor wanted to spread an ideology of Logic and Atheism due to his disdain of Religion and Superstition and Horus rebelled because The Gods of Chaos tricked him into letting them corrupt him by showing him a vision of the future where The Emperor was worshiped as a God and he didn't want this to happen...Then after The Emperor's body was broken at the end of The Horus Heresy he was sealed inside The Golden Throne and Humanity became extremely religious and superstitious, worshiping him as a God Emperor...Damn, you can just taste the irony in that.
The lore is super murky but it’s important to note that the huge amount of people believing that the emperor is a god actually makes him somewhat of a god, if he were pulled off the throne 2 things would happen, the warp would devour humankind but the emperor would survive, even before he was considered a god he would’ve survived as he is a perpetual but he needs to stay on the throne that drains him to keep the warp at bay, but at this point if he got off the throne his physical form would be too powerful to exist on the material plane because he essentially became a god so the throne is necessary for a lot of reasons.
So I'm not gonna lie. Tic tok brought me here and now I cannot stop playing and also... I'm kicking myself for not knowing that this existed
