If I could tell my 13 year old self that, someday, my future wife would say that phrase all the time, I would have been ecstatic. In reality, I just don't want to go to Taco Bell by myself. The lights look great! How do the exterior lenses attach and will you need to paint inside of there? I know that's a long ways off, but any ideas on paint/design?
Thanks! And life certainly has its sense of irony. I should have covered your question in the video. I was concerned about painting, and thought I might need to prepaint the PCBs. The instructions say it’s best to paint after. So I just sent it and got the work done. I imaging the LEDs are just masked off and the tip shot without the lens. I believe lenses attach with a series of screws. I have the clear plastic on the parts shelf, but will leave them there until closer to finishing.
I’m opting for the integrated tips/lights from AeroLEDs because… well… they’re just cool. So I’m hoping for a little less work involved but you’re right, they’re not cheap. Just don’t tell my wife what I’m spending on them! 😅. And thanks for another great video. I know it’s a ton of work on top of just building the plane!
Het Ryan i built these during covid and they are cool. If you need an enclosure for the control board i found a guy who’s 3 d printing them. Nice job and very cheap
@JasonWare-ym6mm Yeah, I saw some links for some 3D printed ones and some standard cases from digi-key or mouser that work. Honestly the standoffs mount it pretty firm and keep in insulated so I think I may just rock it like it is. We’ll see how I feel as I get more of the electronics and wiring buttoned down.
Hello Ryan I recently discovered your channel and I enjoy watching your journey building your airplane. I'm a retired airline tech for a major airline watching you remind me of the fun I had working on planes thanks for sharing your experience.
@@RyanFlysPDX I just realized today your name includes PDX, assuming that means you're near... wait for it... PDX lol. I've just started my -14 build and have been considering a move up there. I'm actually going to do a factory tour in one week. Curious how it's been to build so close to Aurora
@JoshWelsh Handy. To say the least. Mostly because you’ll find the cost of parts can be incredibly affordable compared to the cost of shipping. Have fun with the tour and hopefully you’ll be taking a flight in the 14 demonstrator while you’re there? I wish I could get a redo on my factory flight. It was so long ago!
@@RyanFlysPDX a flight is currently the plan, and I'll have a chat with them about transition training as well. If you're bored, come to the Friday 9am tour and say hi! Thanks for the feedback too, I had a feeling that close proximity had benefits :)
Hey, thanks man. That means a lot! This one really came together nicely. Great to hear on the lights. Question is, who’s doing the soldering, them or you.🤔
It was really fun to put together! The kit comes with everything too--including solder. I was amazed. If only they had included a new solder tip, I wouldn't be working with my janky filed down tip! 🤣
@@RyanFlysPDX One of the best soldering investments I have made was a temp controlled Hakko with replaceable elements.. I am about 2 years behind you on my 7A project, so thanks for the great content!
@randy-johnkostapapas9944 Here’s how it typically goes down: her best friend’s boyfriend or some similar arrangement calls over from the couch and has the best friend watch, who live texts what’s happening to her. About 30 seconds after that text is received I get one that says something along the lines of: “you did what?”
You think you’re a nerd…in the mid 80’s I put together a kit 720 NAV/COM for my plane. Hundreds of components I had to solder to PC boards. Was fun but very time consuming.
That sounds so fun. I remember in middle school I watched someone assemble a HAM radio and I thought it was the coolest shit. I begged my dad and he was having none of that-sitting and listening to HAM radio was not his style. Instead he started getting me into R/C aircraft, and here we are. I guess it all worked out ok.
Great video. Regarding those grey (inline) connectors you use. I have seen others use these but I am not sure of the source ( and it looks like a lot of copycats/counterfeits are out there?) Do you recommend them, they look great and do you have a good source? thanks, great editing too looks like a lot of work
I love the connectors. They’re know as Deutsch style, and you’re right there’s a number of sources. I’ve been using JRready which is a bit of a knockoff but way more affordable than the TE Connectivity ones. I do swap out the provided contact for gold plated ones, and those will get expensive. But I hear it’s a must for corrosion free, low impedance connections. Thanks for the kind words!
"Do I need to put pants on? *sighs*" is something my wife also does lololol

Another great video! Your wife is so supportive! She acts just like my wife. We are so lucky 😂
Thanks!
She’s really good at acting uninterested, but I know she’s just dying to get her hands on some wiring and cable routing.
Great music…and the lights are awesome!
Thanks so much!!
Loving this dialogue! My son the nerd has reached the pinnacle of nerdiness 🤓
LOVE the lights. Those are a great value!!
I’m very happy I went this direction. I think they’re going to be a great addition!!

Aero LEDs and Zip Tips are both awesome. But after a year of nonstop money-dumping I need to start making some wallet friendly decisions!

This is fantastic feedback! Thanks for sharing and watching!
Great job on the installation lights loo6ms nice and bright. 🎉
Thank you!
Very bright, very flashy!
The light kit PCBs and the soldering make the EE in me very happy! Also, turns out the pants were, in fact, optional.
I love that the comments have devolved into rules about the varying requirements of pants.
Yay! New installment to watch.
So happy folks are enjoying these! They're fun to put out.
So fun!! Congrats!
Thanks!

One of your best edits bud, great TV quality shots and accompanying sound track. You’ve sold me on going with flyLEDs for the 8 that I’m building

Are they not already? I’ve been doing things wrong…
Wait?! You read instructions?! 😮
Mostly as a guide of what not to do…
Clam bake?!
Yeah. A clam bake. A goat rope. A dumpster fire. A hot mess. A clown fiesta.
