Never knw he was such a good guitarist. In every other live performance his guitar playing is limited to some power chords in the chorus. And then we get this fingerpicking intro
My friend was DJing at our school disco in 1986 so I asked him to play this. When it started playing the dance floor cleared. I can't tell you how crushed I felt. However, I am over the moon to discover that lots and lots of people still remember it with affection - so much so that John Parr played acoustic version at a packed Royal Albert Hall. 👏👏👏
His name being Rick Hansen, his sort of predecessor but was rather from one side of Canada to the other but succumbed to cancer again (which is what took one of his legs prior) Terry Fox, in a video on Hansen's Foundation is a clip of him looking up at the Terry Fox Monument where it's generally agreed Terry Fox had to stop
@@jasoncarvel1821 It's amazing plus not realising back then how much of a sense of humour Rick Hansen has lol, he's a total legend is Rick! Might not be myself disabled in the mobility sense but get it completely love that man to pieces!
What a bloke Jhon Parr. Still got it mate That gravely voice just gets better and better kid. Lol As a kid growing up in the 80s you gave a lot of kids such a soundtrack to our lives. And we carry it with us even now. Thank you Jhon Ps Now one had the big hair better than you and Michael Knight. Lol
fuck my life, 26 years old, I do love all these classics by hart, and i just discovered this today ... a shame to myself!... What a classic, what a performance, what a voice, ... Incredible.
Wow For Once In Your Life / You Write A Song So Great / In All Of Rock Roll Songs Only About Less Than 5% Are Great From Beginning to End ! This Song Done This Way Is Crazy Fking Great ! From The Heart No Bull Sh.T
I heard the original version on the radio the other day and forgot how much I loved it. Been listening to this acoustical masterpiece since then. Great job John. What a voice!!!
Hey John, keeps popping up on another version of St Elmo´s Fire and it can´t be more exciting. In every preformence uniqueis revealed. New Horrizon wasn´t my taste, the orginal version from ´85 can´t be beat and what can come out of an acoustic guitar out everything with the unmistakable voice is brilliant
Still I blast..Me at 38 years on a fantastic system whether a 4x4 or Mustang, Camaro, Nissan, Mazda... doesn't really matter.. This song is the genius of all Men.
Amazing,.always was my favorite since I was a kid back in the 80's..Now Im 41 and I still love this song above all the new ones,.Thank you John Parr,..
The 80s studio version was a power ballad, this live acoustic feels strangely melancholic - I guess to be expected after decades past and it's associated loss and experience.
John was better guitar player than i thought seeing this version. I was never aware of that. Hes a major top 5 influence in my rasp vocal which made me money. I had no idea on his ability on guitar though. Hes legit and gets his music more than i gave credit. Vocally ive always been a massive fan though when he edges that rasp on back tones. Clearly my later part of my career i mastered the rasp i had his music being a helping hand to see that i could utilize it and mantain that sexy melodic form i love. Of course he wasnt top influence but transitioning from high and soft to hard and back to rasp yes big influence. Without the cracks 😆 🤣 😂 😹 but point is thank you to him.
You are the as best I've ever heard and seen. I heard you when I was 7 with the radio on and I actually came out of my sleep and raised my arm to the sky next ta my Mom. We were sharing a home with my Grandma and believe me. Rebel world. Love ya Sir
I actually came to listen to this to figure out the line right after "I can see the banners fly". I've seen many different versions of this line. Mis-heard lyrics pegged as "Feel like you're back again, hope ridin' high" but I swear listening to this and watching his lips he's saying "Feel like a man again, hope I get high". Anyone have any insights?
I love the orangial. I saw a video of him singing in 2012 it was not good but this is pure and simple and just raw. Real feeling in this version it's just great.
What an incredible talent. A true musician. He should have been a lot bigger than he was. What a voice. He can sing better than many his contemporaries. If you notice that he sounds just like his records, that's becuase he's the real deal. He didn't need studio tricks or gimmicks.
Sometimes I like to thumb the F note of the chord, or maybe the B on funky D patterns... but I have NEVER seen a player reach over the top and thumb notes on the A string as well! What?! That is handy.:)
The original version speaks to my heart, this version speaks to my soul.
Dude, That is probably one of the most poetic description, you nailed it man. Nice!
Wow, I'm blown away! i've always loved this song but this performance brings it to a much higher level.
He's a god dang patriot!!! Such inspiration.
Surely you mean a higher and higher level?
John Parr, you are simply amazing. Thanks for the emotional opportunity, of hearing this song, this way.
you have no idea brother what this time meant to me. This song and movie were part of the best time in my life
By far the best song of the 80' and is absolutely timeless. Still have never got to see John Parr live but always looking to make that happen.
What a master piece... I am blown away.
What a great acoustic rendition of this fine song! Love it!
i was like 8 or 9 when i heard this back in the 80's. I loved it then as a boy and i still love it now as a grown man.
Never knw he was such a good guitarist. In every other live performance his guitar playing is limited to some power chords in the chorus. And then we get this fingerpicking intro
If I can sum this up in one word..... it will be "timeless." Perfection in every sense of the word.
Met him once he is such a lovely man so down to earth
Such a legend

OMG! He hit it out of the park! Stunning version of the song. Amazing!
Love it!! A song from my teens. This version is amazing.
I am inspired. Again. Thank you John Parr
Son of a Bitch....this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen next to my daughter. The real deal.

Not just that Canada but across least a few continents actually lol

Jason Mares Obviously, you’re not alone! Great rendition!!

Play the game ... you got to soldier on. Really deep lyrics about not surrendering. Thank you for this song and the singer.
wow amazing unplugged version on guitar
Holy shit!! Dude still can sing this song! Great version of the song!!
What a power rendition of the classic St. Elmo's Fire from the '80s. I love this song since I was 15 and still loving it now!
WOW, great acoustic version of a great song!
The love for this sing never dies ❤
he sang it like he's somewhere else, alone, amazing
Amazing rendition of this classic hit song. It brought me nearly to the brink of tears
You broke the boy in me, but you won’t brake the man.... lovely song and makes so much sense when you understand why he wrote it. X
Beyond impressed. I wish I could sing like that and he's STILL got it!
I heard the original version on the radio the other day and forgot how much I loved it. Been listening to this acoustical masterpiece since then. Great job John. What a voice!!!
Reminds me of Eddie Money sometimes lol. This is such a wonderful song.
Rest in peace, Eddie Money. Gone, but not forgotten.

Great performance
Only 80s artists can preserve thier prime... 😄
its ok as a torch song, but i would have preferred him performing the original version..
Amazing,.always was my favorite since I was a kid back in the 80's..Now Im 41 and I still love this song above all the new ones,.Thank you John Parr,..
Happy 65th Birthday John Parr
Incredible. Great song from 80's but the acoustic version is amazing. Mr Parr can still bring it ! Great voice
The 80s studio version was a power ballad, this live acoustic feels strangely melancholic - I guess to be expected after decades past and it's associated loss and experience.
Great version!
One of my all time favorites, Thanks John Parr. It still motivates me.
This song was played at my Boy Scout crossover. It is now my favorite song!

"Hold my head high"
Original lyrics were “feel like a vet again, hope I ain’t high” - here he sings “feel like a man again, hold my head high”
A great version for sure!
This is real music!! Not like swift, rihanna, justin etc
Yes! In my opinion, the 60's, 70's, and 80's were the best years for music.
what a great version, fabulous performance too - well done John!
What an amazing version of a great song, makes me want to do something great!
This song will make it into Heaven. I can almost guarantee it!
I love the orangial. I saw a video of him singing in 2012 it was not good but this is pure and simple and just raw. Real feeling in this version it's just great.

Sometimes I like to thumb the F note of the chord, or maybe the B on funky D patterns... but I have NEVER seen a player reach over the top and thumb notes on the A string as well! What?! That is handy.:)
Beautiful John. Just starting out and wondered if you could post an instrumental/lyrics to use as a backing track? ❤✝️
Wow! What a story, what a song.
himno
...burning in me...
Very cool
It sounds so different live. Hard song to master. Found it on a Spotify playlist
Awesome dude
fantastic voice and song
The original makes me hopeful and driven, the acoustic version makes me emotional as I can take the lyrics in more
Nice to see the footage of the original man in motion. Not many people realise the inspiration behind the song.
That was amazing.
Great
better than the original
Uhm, that was unexpected. Brilliant.
David Foster wrote the song in tribute to Rick Hansan.
