I'd lose it if my 31 year old kid living in my house had weekly hair appointments, was shopping for bs, and came home smelling like spring rolls with no money.
My mom has been a stenographer for 35 years, and they've been saying that her job will become obsolete for decades. First, everyone thought audio would replace her, then video, then voice to text, and now AI. Nothing has replaced stenography yet because you need a real human to decipher things such as lawyers and witnesses speaking over each other, using improper English, heavy accent and languagr interpretation, editing the document, putting together the manuactipt for each lawyer, etc. And in recent years, my mother has made way more money than previously because there is a HUGE shortage of court reporters right now. Why? Because the school is HARD, with an extremely high drop-out rate. You can definitely make a lot of money as a court reporter if you were working daily, but most court reporters only accept a few jobs per week. And if this girl is as irresponsible as she sounds, she won't make it through steno school.
People always say jobs will be replaced by AI because they don't understand the fine details. People need to stop looking down on genuinely difficult professions!
Caleb was way off base with the stenographer stuff. I wouldn't tackle to job she is choosing BC it is NEEDED but maybe the school she chose and the cost of the school! And then forget that all together lol! Focus on her ridiculous spending!
I’m a CNC machinist and programmer and people have been telling me the same for years about my job. “Robots and ai will replace you” and for years I’ve made the argument against it, but the reality is that they’re right. It is truly only a matter of time. Chat gpt where it is now can already write programs using G and M code, and all the shops now have robots. If I can have ai in my pocket now writing programs, it’s hard for me to believe it can’t do voice to text for a courtroom within time. I hope I am wrong, for both our sake, but I just am unable to see a future where a voice to text job isn’t replaced by computers. Progression doesn’t stop. People aren’t gonna get to stenography with ai and decide that’s the wall where it stops and cannot grow further. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it is a matter of time.
@@joshchavez8190 I think you're right. But there will always be a need for technicians with cnc machining experience to monitor the work and dot i's and cross t's, for example. In design, it's paramount to learn hand rendering principles before switching to CAD.
I agree. Mine is about 15% and I consider myself extremely lucky. Got a mortgage in 2015 on a very cheap house. Really feel for anyone out there trying to buy a house these days.
I thought it was grey. Sometimes hair goes grey when younger. Yeah no excuse spending $ for nonessentials like that when living with mom in your 30s and not paying down debt.
Omg I had a broke friend who spent $700 on her hair after paycheck, all the while her car needed servicing, she's living with her parents and has so much debt.
When my fiance tells me about our mutual friends money trouble or dumb purchases they make(this it the mutual friend stating that stuff), he will yell taquitos too.😂 He doesn’t watch but he will hear me listening to financial audit when I cook.
seriously at that frequency with all the youtube vids out there it's easy to do at home. Long roots are hard to deal with but if it's weekly like damn girl you can do it at home super cheap!
I've never heard someone get their hair done WEEKLY unless they're a celebrity or something and I used to touch up my roots when i was platinum at 17 by myself and I got really good at it, costs like 5 bucks a touch up when you buy developer toner and bleach powder in bulk
Caleb’s fast food attacks have led to me packing pb&j for the past two weeks on days when I don’t have leftovers to pack 😅it gives me heartburn, but it’s better than hearing his voice in my head saying “you can’t afford Chipotle, you are in debt, my dude!!!!!”
That would give me heartburn too 😅 I have to use almond butter which is at least cheaper at aldi. Unless it's the citric acid in some jellies bc yeah I make my own for that reason. Or the bread, (I'm gluten sensitive-) cheapest alternative is corn tortillas 🙃🥪✨️ Good job avoiding eating out either way! 🎉
If it gives you heartburn, i recommend keeping some ultra strength equate brand rolaids from Walmart for cheap and it'll help and you won't have to be spending a lot on that either.
Stenographer here. Since our girl couldn't keep up, here are what the steno notes for Caleb's test would look like. Each group of letters between slashes is one keystroke: Y-R/U/SPENG/AUL/YOUR/MUN/ON/GLIZ/S*I/S/WHUF/THA/DET/SKP/HUN/DLARS/OF/TR/S-/KRUG/STPH/T*DZ/RA*EL/MAIK/NI/SENS/FPLT "Why are you spending all your money on glizzies when you have that debt and $100 of interest is accruing? It doesn't really make any sense."
When they were talking about haircuts and she says "but you're a booooy" rather than saying he's a man, it just made it really obvious that she's still living in her adolescence. If she sees Caleb as a boy rather than a man then she sees herself as a girl rather than a woman. She hasn't grown up at all.
"Can you budget it in?" Sure; don't eat for 2 weeks and you can afford to get your hair done ONCE THAT MONTH. THAT'S BUDGETING. Some people don't learn priorities or self control.
Orrr she’s like me and just says boy and girl for anyone lol and if I I’m talking about a child or teen I specify that like “little girl” “teen girl” “infant girl” etc
I'm a court recorder, know a good number of stenos. You can absolutely make six figures with transcripts and freelance depos on top of your day job, but you'll make more in a state where there's a shortage...and that's not Texas. Also, very few pass steno school--it is quite difficult--so if you don't have a natural aptitude for typing, language learning, and grammar, the cost of a steno machine and schooling won't be worth it. I personally expect to earn an extra 10k this year on transcripts alone, and that's with me doing just one or two a month because I am in court so much right now, but it is extra work and tough to get certified. 🤷♀️ EDIT: Also, to be clear, you have to be able to listen to and look at a lot of awful shit without reacting. I have had to write about CP, murder, assault, child neglect, domestic violence...some people won't have the stomach.
And the issue is she thinks that she will make that six figures easy once she becomes a steno, but like you said it takes extra work to get there, and she doesn't strike me as the type to work a full time job and work side gigs.
@@Dark_shikari How could you say something like that?? She's working part time AND taking a SINGLE CLASS, she's clearly used to going above and beyond /S
And not only that, but if she's expecting to do ONLY freelancing, she's going to have to market herself a lot and build that client base. I know that at my firm, for my lawyer, we don't use freelancers for depositions, we use companies because we appreciate the shorter turn around time they can provide which some freelancers just can't do. Although every office, lawyer and state are different

Hey Caleb! Love your show. I’m a court reporter in California. I’ve been a Court Reporter for almost 40 years. It’s a really great job. It’s a really hard job. ChatGPT will not replace Court Reporter for a while. The problem with people in conversation in a deposition or in the courtis the fact that people talk over each other and they mumble. The Court Reporter controls the record and stops people from talking and ask him to repeat it if the words are not intelligible to keep trying to Court Reporter. A great pay job paying job. thanks again for all all you do.
The curriculum is also straight trash! Kids in other countries are allowed to learn outside, to have HOURS outside, to ask questions & not be told they’re stupid. Public schools in the states are disgusting. That’s what she meant
Parents here don't know how to discipline their kids. And anytime you mention disciplining your kids, people here automatically assume physical violence (which is weird). Creating structure, manners, etc. for your children EARLY is so, so, so important. People underestimate the importance of the very early years... I always hear "kids don't remember anything until 4 anyway" - while there is truth there, ages 0-3 are foundational to how kids understand their own little worlds. I say this as a kid who once threw a temper tantrum at a Walgreens because I wanted a beanie baby magazine. One of the very few times in my life that I saw my mom get angry at me, but she also explained to me why that was unacceptable. I still remember the conversation 27 years later.
@@neonbuildings Exactly. My degree is in Psych with a focus in child studies. 0-3 is incredibly important and the most IMPORTANT years are 2-5. Period. They learn everything within those years & are simply molded the rest of the way, but what is shown, taught, cultivated in them throughout those years is vital. How you respond to them, what you say, how you teach them to treat others, teaching them to be bored, showing them how to love other humans etc. that is all learned then. You’re exactly right. We are Montessori & homeschool. Our boys are absolutely delightful and they come with boundaries, they demand and show respect, they’re kind to animals, incredibly smart, can read the room & more. Because we poured into them all those years & we still do. You’re spot on!!! You can honestly create a narcissistic sociopath in toddlerhood. It’s terrifying the power in those years

It’s DATA SECURITY. That’s why ChatGPT won’t replace certain jobs. Just like financial jobs dealing with financial information and bank account numbers - it has to be people dealing with the data who have had background checks. They can’t risk secure information getting out due to a breach into AI or other automated tools (especially with the way foreign governments are trying to tap one another).
Also one thing AI can never do that humans can is to assume liability. When something goes wrong, someone's head needs to roll and you can't have that with AI. AI can never sign documents and put their asses on the line.
Thing is, any responsible adult who has their shit together has no interest in getting aired out on a TH-cam show like this, much less wants to take time off to travel to Texas for it.

She's doing a terrible job at explaining the machine. You have to learn shorthand to do court reporting. They have software that translates the specific shorthand the computer uses into normal English to make a transcript.... Also if you watch a lot of court recordings the judge will at times either tell someone to slow down and speak up, or tell people to stop talking over eachother so the court reporter can accurately record everythin
My aunt was a stenographer and she made great money but shes been in the industry for years.. the job isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. They’re not gonna use chat gpt for official court documents.

I'm also putting 15% into 401k and 15% into savings until I have 6 months of income put away. I've got about $10k in my 401k, I started putting into it about 1.5 years ago. I feel much better about my situation even though Im not making more money. I'm 25 and things look good for the future.
Me too, I stopped spending on fast food and ordering in, I started cooking even snacks at home. Saving more and investing in mutual funds and stock markets
These videos helped me realize the quality of life I can live at 26 years old if I buckle down now at 24 and be responsible. I want to travel often, but I want to do it the right way, so I audited myself and made a game plan - a year from now I will be debt free (car & student loans) & have a $10k emergency fund. That’s pretty awesome on a teacher’s salary! These videos keep me motivated to watch my spending and learn more about personal finances. I’m excited to handle this so I can start investing in retirement ASAP. Thanks, Caleb! ❤️
Yeah, $2.50 for lunch is a deal and not something to be upset about. If she spent $2.50 at every meal in a 30-day month she'd only spend $225, which is perfectly good and reasonable for groceries/food costs. Granted, she's obviously not going to eat $2.50 pizza for every meal for a month, but just pointing out, that one meal at Sam's was not bringing up her average food costs or derailing her budget.
I’ve had plenty of leeches in my life. They really like to take advantage of kind-hearted people, and they get so used to you helping them out that they get MAD when you finally set some boundaries and say NO. Don’t let people guilt-trip you into giving them money.

I’m a court reporter myself. We make great money. I have a girlfriend who works in a Texas courthouse as a reporter who makes over 200k after transcripts. The online salaries are not accurate.
Online salaries are almost never accurate for jobs requiring a professional education. In healthcare, I’ve seen these estimates off by as much as multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Isn’t “a personal shopper at a grocery store” just a fancy way of saying she’s an order picker? Grandiosity at its finest! She is trying really hard to make it sound like she’s posh.
In the UK she would be known as a supermarket picker or online order picker. Deffo not a personal shopper because those work in dept stores actually advising people on what to buy.
For real. Being a personal shopper is something completely different than order picking. Personal shoppers can make bank but it’s not something that just anyone can do. There was another lady that said she was a contracted employee for a major delivery service. Like girl, just say you do Amazon Flex or Uber Eats!
There is no shame in living with your family if you are drama free and contribute while working on a plan. Leeching off your family as an able bodied adult is disgustingly shameful.
Dying at her living in China and not being able to decipher the difference between Japanese sushi and Vietnamese Spring Rolls.... was she just there for the plot lmao
Why would she know the difference between Vietnamese and Japanese food when she was in CHINA????? Would living in Colombia somehow make you knowledgeable about Argentinian asado?
Court reporters wont be replaced. They are able to tell the parties in the courtroom if they are speaking loud enough or over each other. Its actually a great profession. I work in court
I don’t know anything about state court, but can confirm they make good money in federal court (easily six figures). I also don’t think they’ll be replaced in the near future - but I do think it’s coming eventually. (Maybe in 20-30 years?) For the moment, it’s an excellent job!
As a tech fan, i doubt that they would be replaced, but i wish she gave a better reason. IMO, i believe relying on technology for taking records down leads to too much discrepancy on what may be put down and a lot of debates and arguments would happen from all who get recorded at some point or another. The legal ramifications are too dire unless u have an overseer which would be its own full time job per court session, as they would need to be there and attentive/dedicated to that the whole time.... which would be redundant at best
I used to work at a speech-to-text company. the problem with AI x court stenography is that it needs to be 100% accurate, so we actually will need stenographers for the next 10 years or so until these models start outperforming humans
The point caleb is trying to make and failing, is that AI technology exploded in advancement in the last year. So if you are talking about something occuring more than 12 months ago, its irrelevant, since AI technology advanced already from that.
@@rad1461 Yeah but it exploding in advancement in the last year doesn't insinuate that AI will continue to progress as quickly as it is right now. It took from 1950 (the first inception of AI) to now to be able to text prompt AI. Deep learning has been important and useful but it could run into a hard limit much like the perceptron did.
@@robbiedontmiss I’m a lawyer and we use faxes still. AI exploding really is not a cause for concern in an extremely conservative work space such as this one.
I work in this field (scopist) and we do see a lot of machine transcripts, but the machines are not good at identifying distinct human voices. I presume they'll get better at formatting particularities, but if people start speaking over one another, for example, which is quite common in Court no matter how many times the steno asks them to stop, the speech-to-text freaks out. It also isn't good at understanding cadence -- if someone pauses mid-sentence, it'll create a new one.
Stenographers won't be replaced by AI only because courts hate technology. Most courts don't even allow cameras. On top of the liability reasons for using a person and not an application.
You do understand that AI speech-to-text does not have to save the recorded audio and definitely does not have to be online while doing the job?.. there is no privacy concern if setup is done correctly.
On point observation, we should set up a pool for when she drops out, I don't think she has the tenacity to stay with it....she seems super flaky, VERY FLAKY😂😂😂
If you look for "Caleb Hammer 52 Year Old Has $0 And Is Stuck In A Pyramid Scheme" that old cowboy dude was part of some kind of MLM, but as I recall that was the least of his financial issues.
The fact she claims to be working 34 hours and made a little over 25k last year. And somehow is looking to make 16k this year from what Caleb said. Tell me she is cutting her hours and just not trying. I work in retail too, make around 40k and work 40 hrs a week. She has no excuse
Idk if Caleb is over these interviews or what because he’s starting to start the videos with an attitude before any intro from the guests. He asked her about stenography but wouldn’t let her answer any question, just interrupting and being condescending over a career he didn’t even know anything about lol he seemed annoyed to just be there (not necessarily annoyed by the guest only). He’s insulted the last few guests town/city where they live, he’s going off way earlier and more dramatic than he use to ( maybe that’s part of the new “script”). Maybe this particular guest had a before camera on confrontation because Caleb was overly negative this video (and that’s saying something, as he’s becoming more negative and judgmental and less “I care about you and your finances” the last few months)
I thought telling her ai would take her job is ridiculous considering all the jobs they said robots would take that still exist and if you think that way literally every job can be replaced by ai. Software engineer, teacher, financial planner
Another court reporter has entered the chat! 👀😂 We are not replaceable! - We can decipher every word even with speakers that have strong accents/poor English - We control the room and have the ability to stop the proceedings if people are talking over each other. AI or a recorder will do nothing here and it can cause A LOT of evidence to be missed. - People cough and sneeze, papers are ruffled, doors are closed. If I miss a single word, I interrupt and ask for repetition. Again, with AI or a recording, any evidence that is covered by any sound is gone. - We can do accurate real-time transcripts at 97%+ accuracy. AI is sooo many years away from this. - the list could go on, but I’ll stop here. We simply and always will be the highest standard when it comes to something as important as transcripts within our judicial system. Because I know people will ask, let’s talk money💰 Note: I am Canadian, so I am a sub-contractor for a Canadian firm. Therefore, my income is in CAD. I know that it heavily depends on region for reporters in the US, but I know for a fact there are tons of reporters making the same or well above my income. I also will note that I am a court reporter for discoveries/depositions. These are where the lawyers question the parties to gather information for trial. Discovery transcripts are then entered as evidence within the trial proper. During my first full year of work, I invoiced $135k. During my second full year, I invoiced $152k. Of course, this is before taxes, but needless to say it’s a very lucrative career. I am now into my third full year. Not to mention, I’m a subcontractor, and therefore, I make my own schedule and take on work only when I want to 😁 this also means that I have the ability to make WAY more than I do. I just prefer a solid work/life balance. I love the time freedom while making a fantastic income!
Caleb is killing me with his ignorance in this episode 😅 the salaries he mentions of 44-88k are for court officials, but that is for their BASE salary. On top of that, they are paid per page for every transcript they produce. Transcript fees can easily be another 50k+++ on top of a base salary!!!

Not a fan of the "draw a bar graph" segment. Like the idea of making guests see how delusional they are, but I think the execution is a bit off. You should put an unlabeled pie chart of their spending in front of them and make them label it before going through their statements and then compare it to reality afterwards.
I think it’s the fact that she spends out of “convenience” which he said is really just laziness. So I can see he’s frustrated that she’s not going to actually change her actions
She seems like the kinda person where she thinks *everything she says is “cute…”* Also, why do I get the vibe she’s trying to rizz up Caleb the entire episode lol
She has siver hair. Its very difficult to get that color because you need to remove almost all the yellow color then add the blue. If you dont you end up with green hair. Shes not getting all her hair colored. Just the roots because theyll be in stark contrast with her hair. Obviously not a hair color for the indebted.
The AI thing is very overhyped. The company my wife works for adopted one of the major AI solutions to generate letters to customers based on some previous actions, etc. It was a disaster. The letters made no sense. And this was done with a ton of training of the "AI" for a long time before getting implemented. They cancelled the whole thing after just a few weeks.
I’m noticing a big trend with people think it’s better to go back to college/school instead of fixing their problems (behaviors/habits/ reckless spending)zzz
Agreed! She already has a degree, most offices that ask for a bachelors degree don’t care what it’s for, so she could do that and make more money but no…
@@Frifgjsuhdjhd no it’s not. Cameras aren’t allowed for security reasons and they are very conservative. Do you think a court where cameras aren’t allowed would have AI-transcribed recording devices? Edited to add challenges: Privacy, consent, distribution, data storage, accents/dialects, regional slangs, tone of voice, recognition of multiple speakers, know-how and recognition of industry terms. Anyway, rest assured people will still need others writing shit down in our lifetime.
Absolutely, I work with AI in call centre space and while the technology is advancing fast the implementation of practical uses is slow because of the things you listed. I'm in Australia and speech to text really struggles with the accent not to mention the difficulties in understanding Australian irony lol

Thank you so much for this post. This is actually the profession my daughter has chosen. This information will be helpful for her
I’m a CNC machinist and programmer and people have been telling me the same for years about my job.

I see this on TikTok too. The median stenographer salary is $59k so not bad but definitely not 6 figures
I know exactly 1 steno who made 6 figures... because they did Rev basically full time too. They are a Data Analyst now though.
That's also why she knows the word cat. We've all seen that one chicks viral video where she explains how the "language" works
I love Steno but something like 80% of people drop out of the classes before completing them. People underestimate the difficulty of the job.
You have to be able to listen and understand. Most of the people on Tiktok don't know how to do either.

She refuses to work now....why would she do any freelance work?
And not only that, but if she's expecting to do ONLY freelancing, she's going to have to market herself a lot and build that client base. I know that at my firm, for my lawyer, we don't use freelancers for depositions, we use companies because we appreciate the shorter turn around time they can provide which some freelancers just can't do. Although every office, lawyer and state are different

Not sure about the U.S. but in other countries stenographers also give authenticity to the content of the transcript… like a notary type or thint
As an ex elementary school teacher, what she means by “different cultures” is that the kids in the US are awful.

I was just about to comment the same. I don’t think stenos will be replaced anytime soon. Cameras aren’t even allowed in many courtrooms to this day.
Also judges and lawyers want to hear things back, is ChatGPT gonna read back aloud what was written 15 minutes ago?
@@rebashhhh3448 AI can read back what was said 15 minutes ago but that's also alot of time for someone to hack it and make it say something else.
Also one thing AI can never do that humans can is to assume liability. When something goes wrong, someone's head needs to roll and you can't have that with AI. AI can never sign documents and put their asses on the line.
Lawyers will be able to pick apart AI until the end of time it will never have the nuance of a human.

But she’s buying it on their credit card without paying her balance, at high interest rates.

@Veryfancyflamingo piggy backing off of it I work with state case court reporters depending on the state it is pretty good money.
I don’t care how in debt I am I won’t feel guilty for spending $2 for lunch while traveling 😂
It also isn't good at understanding cadence -- if someone pauses mid-sentence, it'll create a new one.
bold of you to assume that humans are 100% accurate
Her: "Do you like Spring Rolls?"
Caleb: *has an aneurysm*
Stenographers won't be replaced by AI only because courts hate technology. Most courts don't even allow cameras. On top of the liability reasons for using a person and not an application.
Many courts now use their own live recording, cameras and audio. They are quite happily jumping on technology.

Another court reporter has entered the chat! 👀😂
We are not replaceable!
- We can decipher every word even with speakers that have strong accents/poor English
- We control the room and have the ability to stop the proceedings if people are talking over each other.

The AI thing is very overhyped. The company my wife works for adopted one of the major AI solutions to generate letters to customers based on some previous actions, etc. It was a disaster.
