Sadly a result of the current system is that you never learn responsibility or accountability. Those aren't things you magically gain as an adult and I honestly think that being mad at people who were taught helplessness is an absolute waste of breath. Pick them up, put them to work and allow them to learn. Otherwise most of them are going to fall through.

She mocked her mom every time she spoke. Her mom rescued her from $4,000 of credit card debt. She thanks her by mocking everything financial she has to say. I disagree. She asked her mom "what's debt?" in her late teens. Her mom never taught her how to manage her money, which is irresponsible parenting. There's a reason she's the way she is now. I like her because she seems like a kind, fun person, but she needs to be more responsible. Her parents set her up for failure and are now enabling her incompetence. They aren't letting her grow up.

They make okay money with the BS, but what she's talking about in terms of earnings are for the supervisors (who need an MS and to be licensed ABA counselors) or in very high-income areas (which means that the salary won't go far). I *may* be getting her letters wrong. I just don't have the bandwidth to search my email to see if I have an email from her to get them right, but I know for sure she has an MS in psychology and a license that required testing, and both were required for her position supervising a team that provides support for students with Individual Education Plans so that they receive the school and community services they need to thrive.

I know the "welfare queen" meme is popular, but it's not the average person who gets these benefits, nor is someone like this who tries to work less to keep the benefits. A well-designed program would give less and less in benefits until you reach a maximum income. Instead, the way they work is that you either get them or not. So some people don't work their way out of needing benefits because they will not be able to afford to eat once they work 25 instead of 20 hours a week! That's awful, and could be solved if they just got a little less as they worked more and earned more, versus being totally cut off if they're offered more hours or a promotion!

Yes they need boundaries but trying to draw them with someone this far gone is hard. Because when you do eventually just cut all support she isn't going to immediately get her shit together.
No, she's going to become more reliant on people who seem to take advantage of her from what the convo seems to allude to. She will be in an objectively dangerous situation. And desperation doesn't mean she starts working 3 jobs to pay off debt. It might just further snowball a dangerous debt cycle that will accumulate to a point that she will never be able to climb out of.

So Texas has the hazelwood act. It’s for people who served and their qualified dependents. You have to be a Texas resident when you enlist and go to school in Texas for it to be used. My husband served for 6 years and if my children choose to go to school in Texas, what’s left in that “account” for them, will be available to them. With both GI bill and the hazelwood act my husband was able to get his bachelors and still would have enough for a masters if we lived in Texas.
