From the moment I laid eyes on a Viper when I was a child, to now being in my 30's, it has been the car I desire to own the most. Dodge made something truly special, and there will never again be a car like the Viper.
Very interesting presentation, I was in awe of the Mighty Viper ever since I first saw one back in the early 90s, an American Icon famous and desired the world oder !
The Gen 5 has one of the greatest V10 engines ever built and is a true track monster in the purest sense, but the Gen 2 is prettier and it's not even close. It is as STUNNING as it was the day it came out, and probably always will be.
So I am paying off my truck in the next year or so.... and I just bought my wife her dream car (Wrangler Willy's loaded) and now I'm thinking its time i get my dream car. I loved vipers before I could drive and to think I can afford a Gen 2.... seeing reviews and everything it seams like Gen5 (out of my price range) or Gen 2 are the best. I cant wait to go test drive one and bring it home cus I know I'll love it. Thanks for taking the time to break it down, really helps people like me trying to figure out what's best for them.
Great videos, for my part I am lucky enough to own a 2002 GTS and a 2017 SRT.. the dream and I admit that I like the 2.. very hard to choose.. I'd say the 2002 GTS for the look and the 2017 for the performance... but frankly the 2 are incredible and I keep them preciously ... unique cars that we will never see again.. Long live the Viper
Back in the year 2000, there was a 1997 Viper GTS that had the Hennessy 650 package at my local dealership. I was interested in purchasing it because it was being sold for a great price. I went to test drive it and couldn't even get into the driver's seat because of the corner of the dash and my 6'5" height. That day killed my desire to own a Viper even though I love them. I would love, LOVE to own a 5th gen but I've never made any kind of attempt to see if I could fit in one because I'm pretty sure I can't, even though they're supposedly more spacious. The 5th gen Viper is such a gorgeous car!
I’m 6’5” 320lbs and barely fit in a gen 2. I own a 2000 GTS. I know what you mean but I am about to install a seat lowering kit. A few inches makes a huge difference. The knee can go into the blinker without the lowering kit and you just don’t turn left.
I own both. Gen 2 hands down is the better looking car. Also unless you're reving the car out the power is negligible. The gen 2 sounds 100x better too since both banks of the exhaust exit the rear. Gen V, best of the best of analog cars. We will never see something like that again. The brakes can stop the rotation of the earth, the 900w and 18 speaker sounds system is unreal. You get all of the amenities of Gen 2 but todays tech. Looks wise, the Gen V is a clone of the Gen 2.. a modern take of a car that is damn near impossible to beat looks wise.
The Gen 2 Viper was also the first car I fell in love with; blue with two white stripes - that was THE look for me. I have fond memories of seeing it in the first two Gran Turismo games and Test Drive 5 & 6, along with having various toy model Vipers of that period. Even with all the JDM's/imports and European exotics of the time, I still felt a calling to this particular car. I've adored many cars since, but this will always hold a very special place for me.
I am planning on getting a gen 2 gts when I retire, that is two years from now, I have been trying to forget about the viper but it keeps on coming back.
As owner of both I can tell you driving dynamics are very similar. Obviously newer car is smoother, more refined, much faster, but gen 2 GTS is much much sexier (in fact a black GTS is my favorite looking car ever made) and it's timeless. If money no object, I would still pick a gen 2 purely for it's looks.
Would love to see a video comparing the Gen5 to the ZR1. Five years ago when I got my ZR1 I did think about trying to find a final year Viper but decided that ZR1 was probably the better overall car.
I was in the same boat, I was looking at both and went with the Gen 5 Viper. I will say the ZR1 can be more of a daily driver than the Viper. It's a monster but nothing I want to drive everyday
Gen 2 Vipers ran the exhaust out of the back due to EPA regulations and the O2 sensors technology at that time. The O2 sensors weren't able to handle the heat and water elements so the O2 sensors were relocated over the rear axles. Once O2 technology caught up, the Viper gained side pipes again.
Brother Im not going to lie I was thinking in the morning about the comparison video for your VIPER and it came now I think i saw future...lol...It is night time by the way in my region..
Another great video I loved this and enjoyed it alot and I love dodge vipers I wish I had the money to buy one but sadly I won't ever own one I won't never be able to afford one. But anyway both cars are beautiful and I prefer the gen 5 but I woukd definitely love to own both. Anyway keep up the great work much love to ya have a good one take care god bless and I will see ya on the next one
I also own a gen v gts red with black stripes with a ta 1.0 carbon wing from extreme. Almost traded it in towards a amg gt55 but just couldn’t part ways with it lol. Good review.
I owned three Vipers. My 2002 GTS was gorgeous. My only issues were a hot interior and the front lower spoiler lip was just too low. My 2006 SRT-10 was perfect! No issues at all. Of all my cars, my 06 Viper had the best transmission, even better than my Honda S2000. I loved my 06 Viper! My 2010 was also a great joy! Love these cars! Never owned a Gen V, sadly. I switched to Corvette Z06/ZR1 and Porsche in 2012. Thanks for the cool memories. Cheers/B
Great review ... I'm a Gen 2 Viper owner here in south Florida as well. Any info on the intake carbon box that the owner installed on the Gen 2? Thanks!
Are you sure on the Gen 2 headlight leveler? I feel like that’s not why they are there. I believe it was to save a dollar on the headlights because the headlights weren’t intended for the viper.
The pipes running along the side of the Gen2 is a great idea because for racing/street applications you wouldn't need to do much modifications to have side pipes which is more power to the wheels. Also I know what the "experts" say but your car is actually a 6TH generation ,because it falls under a separate body style and drivetrain from its predecessor.
G5 engine is actually offset to the passenger side by a couple inches to give the driver more footwell space. G2 you have to sit kinda diagonally because of the transmission tunnel G5 shifter is way better because of the TR6060 transmission vs T56 of the older vipers
the old gen vipers are good cars... back then I used to love the looks of the Gen 3 mainly from the old NFS series but now I mainly love the looks of the gen 5 and it looks a lot more menacing from the front...
ALSO BACK IN 96 WHEN THE VIPER CAME OUT LOL THERE WASNT MANY CARS THAT WERE FASTER AT THAT TIME LOL I HAD MY 92 Z28 AND MY 87 MUSTANG GT AND THE VIPER WOULD HAVE KILLED ME IN A RACE.
I own a B&W 96 UGR TT GTS, brutally fast (7.6 @ 186 over 15 years ago with the stick and IRS) and raw. My DD is a black C6Z and in a lot of ways pretty similar. Both are sharp looking designs (although in all fairness, the C6Z took quite a few styling cues from the gen 2 GTS), but the gen 2 GTS is a lot more special and gets more attention. The C6Z is more refined and probably a better car in many ways, but it should be as it's a more mainstream car (if you can call a Z06 that) and a decade newer. BTW, the peddles on the gen 2 are adjustable, great feature that would've likely solved your driving position interference issues. 😉
It's harder to make them sound good (like early Gallardo or LFA) because they're an odd fire V10 like the later Gallardo, but the exhaust is split so you don't get the mixed pulses. I just put some cheap second hand extractors on my 96 RT/10 (rear exit exhaust) and it made an unbelievable difference. The sound before was a bit crap imho, but with the extractors it sounds a billion times better - could almost claim it sounds good now lol.
Way different firing order and engine design compared to the Italian V10’s. Plus the exhaust doesn’t merge due to the side exits and routing, so it sounds more like two Inline-5 engines fighting each other.
@@shawncarson8131have you heard a TT Viper? It sounds glorious regardless of the firing order. It’s different than the high pitched Italians and Germans but no less impressive imho. I’ve heard em all.
There's just something about the Viper. I don't know exactly what it is, but in my opinion it's just such a sexy car. And you rarely see them. I see more Ferrari and Lambos.
Vipers are one of the very few cars that actually got lighter through the generations, most cars get significantly heavier. I'd do heinous things to get a Gen v in my garage.
There are manual releases inside. There's a key hole in the trunk area on both to open the trunk manually and then get access to the interior. Same thing in the c6 and c7 corvettes.
Im so hard pressed if i buy a Gen 5 GTS, gen 2 GTS or gen 4 Coupe. I don't care how uncomfortable or droney they may be. I need one. Every person i know with a viper always mentions how absolutely bulletproof reliable they are as well.
I love the vi[per but to me this car was always under power. The gen V proofs my point the first version come out with 645hp and by the end of production it still only had 645 no matter the model even the last ACR. But we know why cough cough ferrari.

Amen!
All vipers are great cars but the gen 5 is just perfect.
For me the "perfect" Viper is a Gen 2 w/ a Gen 5 power train and upgraded suspension.
@@cali2468 And brakes, gearing, transmission, aero, seats, hp and torque. But other than that, yea.
@ Thats why I said “powertrain”. Gen 2 GTS has all the aero you need, especially if if it’s an GTS-R.

There is a reason dodge made the gen 5 look like the gen 2. Beautiful cars.

Broke-dick Gen 2 owner? They are kit cars compared to a Gen V in EVERY aspect.
2:59 for those wondering, the middle generation Viper's logo was named Fang.
Fang, that T. rex from Primal Animated show from adult swim?
The gen 2 GTS is simply timeless... what a beautiful design!

The rear side vents go to the rear brakes. The differential gets additional passive cooling from the ground effect through the metal floor sheet.
