I just watched this video on 3rd December 2021 having bought the 360 Max in November after a bit of searching around the net. I don't think any of the Cons would have put me off 2 years ago, and they certainly do not today! The post-recording ability to Reframe is awesome and Horizon Levelling also. As 360 cameras go this one is still right up there with the competition, perhaps not with the 1080p but I can forgive it for that. The hardware, the software and the apps ... a nice little ecosystem right there.
It seems that it falls short in photo and timelapse mode, I'll wait for Gopro to fix those before I get the Max. Additional underwater case is also on the list. Great review Ben, thanks
Good review, with the exception of the clear protective covers. I live in a sunny climate (Las Vegas) and when the sun hits a cover, glare and specks abound even after ensuring they’re clean. So I’m living dangerously and shooting without the clear covers
My GoPro Max just arrived yesterday and I took it out to a shoot immediately. Already in love and definitely think the pros outweigh the cons. I suspect a firmware update will bring raw photos to the max since I saw on GoPro's support page that max can take raw photos. I'm assuming the article is early in front of the software update. Another great video Ben 👏🏻I was watching this in 720 and when you were walking past the flowers doing a tiny planet, the flowers looked pixelated and messy. It’s probably because of TH-cam’s video compression but it was surprising. The problem was fixed on 1080

Then I got one as a gift...being able to reframe, zoom, have an invisible stick and so much perspective is mind blowing. Technology is always changing and the world is devided when it comes to desktop ...Mac or PC. So far all my reframing has been through a mobile app not an issue there. Desktop users... need to remove the sd card to transfer files. The devision is clear Mac users don't seem to have a problem, Pc users should save themselves some anguish and edit on a mobile device until the Professionals at Gopro fix the bugs. I just bought one for my skateboarding videos. My channel is very unpolished, but I feel this camera will add another level to it. I have only uploaded 1 video with a few clips from it the first week but I am already filming with it more than my cannon M50. This is the first time I have upgraded my GoPro since the Hero 5.

I got 360 photos with my Dji spark and I like how you can view them in google photos on my iPhone and can use the gyroscope to look around it’s so sweet. I have a go pro 7 black and I’m happy with it
cons - lower frame rates in 360 mode and in hero mode. besides that it's about the perfect camera. if gopro does the gopro 9 just combining the 8 and the max as an all in one for the 9 and you would have the perfect action video camera !
Hmmm.. I seen another video saying that this camera stitches the video inside the camera. I have the original Fusion myself. You didn't mention the in-camera stitching. This would make the workflow much better. I'll stick to my GoPro Fusion however.
Thank you Ben, great review. For me the best option is the Hero mode with auto Horizon leveling. Mountain biking in low light condition (forest), wet and muddy circumstances etc etc. The Insta was not capable to do this in bad light condition (always motion blur also with faster shutter turned on) and need to have the waterproof case. The Max is really good in this and will take away my use of gimbals Still I will be using the "great" Insta 360 One X for other shots like: drone-like shots and the b-rol. I wonder if they could just have firmware that can detect when the camera is underwater and apply a different stitching algorithm to the footage when the lenses are being affected by being surrounded by water. I'm guessing the Max has no in-built barometer so any "underwater mode" would need to be manually switchable, but in future models this could most likely be detected automatically.
Just waiting for you to get a hold of the Kandao 8K!.. I think this is the one I've been waiting for to upgrade. The only thing that worries me is the non removable battery but with charge while filming and a suitably large external battery pack I think it will be okay. I like where gopro is going, but it's not what I want, I have 5 other gopros for that stuff.
great video.. I subscribed.. I tried the clear plastic lens covers at night, and it totally ruined my shots.. there was lots of glare, reflections and distortions.. Not good.. I like the camera.. lots of great stuff.. The one big down side for me is the lack of Slow Motion...
Do you still use this camera, or has the Q8K taken over? I'm about to buy my first 360 camera and I can get the 360 Max for $400 through GoPros subscription deal. I REALLY like the camera replacement policy and this alone almost makes it worth it for me. I'd use it 100% for creating 360 videos for OC2. I carry DSLR's for stills.

Actually no, I have the MAX and whenever I use the protective bubbles I can always see them in the shot, it creates a odd effect and massive lensflares due to the bubble
One year in and I’m just now considering getting the GoPro Max. I’m not really into the crazy globe effect. What I’d really like to see are footages of store facades along the street, for example, when you walk past by them using the Max. This can’t be achieved by non-360 cameras… so it would be interesting to see. And how the footage will look like when reframed or being edited. I mean… can they look linear/ as straight as a building w/out the crazy fisheye/ 360 effect? Hope you can respond to this. Thanks for this great vid, Ben, cheers!
Why don’t you just superglue the lens protector on to the camera that way you keep the water out of it and your lenses are completely clear just a thought you can always remove it later but it would keep the water out and make it watertight

@@thewizardofoh The GoPro Player you could easily make an Automator job if you needed it. Most people open their photos to inspect them (horizon leveling is already done automatically), just hit save.

Hey Ben - love your channel! We are just getting started shooting 360 movie reviews using the Fusion. Is the MAX worth the upgrade or do you recommend a different model. We don't care about stabilization since our camera is stationary... For us - we are more interested in the final 360 video resolution/quality and ability to do modest color grading.
Why does it default to Hero mode right out of the box!!! Mine arrived in the mail with barely enough time to top up the batteries let alone look at the settings before heading out on a camping trip. Luckily I had it pointed the right way to get my kids reactions before having time to play around with the settings and set it to 360.

As much as 360 video and photos are novel to share on socials and an interesting medium for content creators that want to capture everything and focus on only a little bit... the main use for me is to take a photo today, that I will be able to look at in 20 years through whatever AR goggles or brain jack equivilant of an oculus quest is then and be able to look around in the reality I had at that moment. I was born in the late 80's so the first part of my life was recorded in physical media... I imagine that 360 for me is the upgrade of physical photos, a bit more purposeful, involved and immersive than any archive of 10,000 photos of your food you took from your cameraphone in 2016 will ever be. It's interesting that I don't see any 360 content creators talking about the future use of a 360 photo taken at the right time and place, just the present.
I am truly puzzled by this product. Re-framing does not work well on Android phones since the app has shortcomings. And on a windows desktop the app is entirely missing. What is available is a re-framing plugin, but that only works on professional editing software, but not on the "Elements" consumer version. Nice hardware, but no software, no workflow, no result!
The Max has a setting in-camera that the Hero 8 Black does not, automatic horizon leveling. Wasn’t included in your review, and you made it a con instead.
I did mention that you can level in the app.. but for images transferred straight to the computer it doesn’t. This is a big con for anyone using it for google street view and taking lots of photos at once.

I haven't used mine much but I like the touch screen. However, your video cut through the hype by articulating that the specs are the same and the 1080p, lack of slow mo, etc. It's as if they slapped on a LCD screen and tossed it out there for suckers like me. I do like that there are lens covers. I get nervous riding with my Insta 360 One X without a case. But after watching your video, I'm heavily leaning toward returning it and waiting for the next Insta 360. The QooCam looks neat but is big and I think heavy.
I’d say they also fixed the workflow issues with the Fusion which is indeed an update.. but not enough of an update to make it a ‘game changer’ like Qoocam could be
Does the GoPro software for Mac/PC still have the 60second for each clip limit? I can't find any answer online, and this is the reason I'm hesitating to get the MAX.
Hello, great Channel! I haven't really been able to figure out how to make this camera stay still when doing 360 footage. Like it has an auto feature where it starts to rotate without telling, both in 360 footage and 360 timelapse. It's really bad. I use Davinci Resolve for edit the footage... there is no way to fix this and also in the Gopro App... therefore, it becomes extremely difficult and demanding to erase the Nadir and other things... Insta360 is the way.
How long will this camera continually shoot if connected to an external battery? (Will it shut off automatically/overheat protection or run through the battery? Trying to get 4-5 hours of continual recording...)
May I ask how you go about exporting and editting? I've just gotten a GoPro Max. My latest upload was done by stitching together the video in the GoPro App, exporting it to my laptop, editing the video and sound on either iMovie or PInnacle Studio, and then running it through Spatial Media Metadata Injector. When I upload to TH-cam, to say the qualiy is lacking is an understatement. Watching your video here, the video is definitely HD and beautiful. Please help. Where am I going wrong?
Do you think the current design will lead way to a possibility of ND Filter for the MAX? Or is it impossible to make spherical Filters? I can see it not being possible with Polarizing. But I see no reason with ND. I would buy them.

Has anyone had difficulty downloading the software from the Microsoft store? I have given up trying to download the software from the Microsoft store, unable to link my desktop PC to my account. It will not let me install the software as a result. The 360 degree camera is worthless without the software. Anyone know where else I can download the software from??
Good job! Not enough for me though: gopro has never been good at improving their products; they’ll come with a new model instead and the max seems to make no exception. I’ll wait for qoocam and insta360 to show what they are capable of. They still lead for innovation.
Innovation? How innovative is it to have to design a "Cold Weather Battery" after it's been released and their consumers discover it can't handle the cold,? Then they make the battery hardly available until warm weather months. Then they tout that they're the only company to make a "Cold Weather Battery". The Chinese have good ideas and possibly intentions, but they lack in executing a complete, trustworthy product.

ordered my Max on Monday 2nd Dec from GoPro.com, have contacted support twice to find out where my order is (says pending) they keep assuring me my order is fine and is awaiting its assignment to a delivery, website stated 2-3 days and its been 5 days and still hasn't been assigned to a dispatch. I wanted the camera for a convention tomorrow, plus my daughters nativity on Tuesday :-( not happy.
Hi. Did you find out how to record 6 mic sorround sound? With any settings i get only stereo sound. Fusion is not problematic about sorround sound. Great to listen on headset and spin around 360 vr video. Especialy on misic event like concerts.
p.s. Kandao Qoocam 8K has just been announced.. will get my hands on it ASAP. And if i can't, i'll fly to Beijing and steal one.

Currently GoPro FX Reframe works in CC 2018 (Mac & PC), CC 2019 (Mac & PC), and CC 2020 (PC only.) Mac 2020 support is being investigated.

How is the quality on MAX in linear mode? On my Hero 6 it is much better than on MAX.

In the mall pics and in some of the videosamples there was a very bright and big blue/purple lensflare. Did you noticed this often with the Max?
Not often but I did notice it.. also there was a massive blue spot in the photo sample from this location too. Weird.
A major con is that there is no video recording looping (over writing itself) function.

Great review Ben! Very good that you mention the horizon leveling of photos. A shame it is bad, for Street view photographers this is a deal breaker.
The GoPro App and GoPro Player will automatically horizon level them.

The Max has a setting in-camera that the Hero 8 Black does not, automatic horizon leveling. Wasn’t included in your review, and you made it a con instead.
I did mention that you can level in the app.. but for images transferred straight to the computer it doesn’t. This is a big con for anyone using it for google street view and taking lots of photos at once.
Ben Claremont Isn’t Horizon Leveling also an in-camera setting for the Max, which automatically corrects footage without the need for processing as shown in these samples here?

I haven't used mine much but I like the touch screen. However, your video cut through the hype by articulating that the specs are the same and the 1080p, lack of slow mo, etc. It's as if they slapped on a LCD screen and tossed it out there for suckers like me. I do like that there are lens covers. I get nervous riding with my Insta 360 One X without a case. But after watching your video, I'm heavily leaning toward returning it and waiting for the next Insta 360. The QooCam looks neat but is big and I think heavy.
I’d say they also fixed the workflow issues with the Fusion which is indeed an update.. but not enough of an update to make it a ‘game changer’ like Qoocam could be
Does the GoPro software for Mac/PC still have the 60second for each clip limit? I can't find any answer online, and this is the reason I'm hesitating to get the MAX.

I haven't really been able to figure out how to make this camera stay still when doing 360 footage. Like it has an auto feature where it starts to rotate without telling, both in 360 footage and 360 timelapse. It's really bad. I use Davinci Resolve for edit the footage... there is no way to fix this and also in the Gopro App... therefore, it becomes extremely difficult and demanding to erase the Nadir and other things... Insta360 is the way.
How long will this camera continually shoot if connected to an external battery? (Will it shut off automatically/overheat protection or run through the battery? Trying to get 4-5 hours of continual recording...)

May I ask how you go about exporting and editting? I've just gotten a GoPro Max. My latest upload was done by stitching together the video in the GoPro App, exporting it to my laptop, editing the video and sound on either iMovie or PInnacle Studio, and then running it through Spatial Media Metadata Injector. When I upload to TH-cam, to say the qualiy is lacking is an understatement. Watching your video here, the video is definitely HD and beautiful. Please help. Where am I going wrong?

Do you think the current design will lead way to a possibility of ND Filter for the MAX? Or is it impossible to make spherical Filters? I can see it not being possible with Polarizing. But I see no reason with ND. I would buy them.
Yeah definitely possible.. although it’s probably not a priority for them as the camera handles outdoor environments pretty well already

Currently the reframing software GoPro Player, only released for Mac not Windows... I’m so mad especially being a windows user and owning this camera

For Windows it works, run your files through the GoPro MAX Exporter app on windows first
Has anyone had difficulty downloading the software from the Microsoft store? I have given up trying to download the software from the Microsoft store, unable to link my desktop PC to my account. It will not let me install the software as a result. The 360 degree camera is worthless without the software. Anyone know where else I can download the software from??

Good job! Not enough for me though: gopro has never been good at improving their products; they’ll come with a new model instead and the max seems to make no exception. I’ll wait for qoocam and insta360 to show what they are capable of. They still lead for innovation.
Innovation? How innovative is it to have to design a "Cold Weather Battery" after it's been released and their consumers discover it can't handle the cold,? Then they make the battery hardly available until warm weather months. Then they tout that they're the only company to make a "Cold Weather Battery". The Chinese have good ideas and possibly intentions, but they lack in executing a complete, trustworthy product.

ordered my Max on Monday 2nd Dec from GoPro.com, have contacted support twice to find out where my order is (says pending) they keep assuring me my order is fine and is awaiting its assignment to a delivery, website stated 2-3 days and its been 5 days and still hasn't been assigned to a dispatch. I wanted the camera for a convention tomorrow, plus my daughters nativity on Tuesday :-( not happy.
Hi. Did you find out how to record 6 mic sorround sound? With any settings i get only stereo sound. Fusion is not problematic about sorround sound. Great to listen on headset and spin around 360 vr video. Especialy on misic event like concerts.
It needs the slip on slip off neoprene pouch like the insta360x.
