Gopro is by far better, the dynamic range and colours make the diffference. The One r and X washed out colours are unacceptable . Even 50 years ago at my mother s wedding pictures looked better than those in One X and R.
I think I've finally found the camera that I'll pull the trigger on. I'm also still rocking a Hero 3. So the One R will be the best option for me when it comes to getting into 360 as well as upgrading my action cam.
I tend to like the look of the output of the Max in all the reviews. Looks richer and more appealing. One R looks often washed out but not always. One R has a ton of advantages, Max has easier form factor and better screen. I think I’m veering to One R though, but hoping there’s a “look” I can easily apply in editing in the app to bring it a bit closer to the look of the Max. I think that should be easily done.
The "washed out" look is preferred by people who edit because it's more flexible. Much easier to bring out detail in the bright and dark areas because they aren't blown out or too dark. But like Ben said...preferences.
Thanks Ben for all this info. It’s so helpful and we haven’t pulled a trigger for our camera of choice for our attempted Thru-hike of the Colorado Trail this summer but we have some time and we can expect some new models before July. Thank you so much for helping us get into 360 video! I am excited to capture this experience with my pups this way and a lot of not all is with your help. Thank you again
Ben - thanks again for a great review. I finally bit the bullet and purchased my first 360. I got both the One R and the GoPro Max. I will forever stick with GoPro. I bought both to test, and the One R photos are out of focus as compared to the GoPro. When trying to return the One R, customer service took over a week to respond between each communication. And even though they confirmed the difference, they refused to take the product back (GoPro photos are much sharper with better color choices). The return policy I accepted did not say anything about the inability to return an activated camera, but Insta360 will not take my camera back because it's been activated (even after they confirmed that it is a sub-par product). I'm also not a fan of the Insta360 workflow of exporting from their proprietary format to JPG (I think it loses quality), I don't like all of the advertising inside of the Insta360 app, and I think the plastic it's made out of feels cheap. It will be interesting to see how it holds up (unless they finally let me return it), but the GoPro feels better and more rugged. Thanks again for a quality review. I wanted to keep everyone updated on the issues I ran into to ensure they are aware of the comparisons, and the issues they might run into.
4:10 the one r looks more washed out than the x or max. even though the sun is behind you, all 3 are doing ok for what it is. much blacker blacks and whiter whites on the max with crazy blues as well. if i was at best buy looking at three tv's showing these three shots i would all day buy the one on the right. lol slow mo is gonna be better on the x and R. a shame the max does not do at least 60 fps in 360 mode. 5:50 the R looks better. thanks for these side by sides. i wish the one R was an all in one unit that had a hero mode instead of modular. maybe the next one will.
spot on mate, go pros have always been for non-pros and the general masses with their out of the box settings. I always tell people they are basically made to shoot perfect footage high noon at the beach on the equator!
I am a landscape photographer and the color from the Max is just gorgeous and looks way way better than One X and one R.. In the shot you consider "too high contrast", you simply should increase the exposure to get more details in high light.
Sweet review! Makes me excited for my one r to come in. I really look forward to the one r low light stability test. Not ideal that you have to change the setting but a small trade off for all the other advantages.
Lucky you in that beautiful snow. So much nicer than a Sydney winter :) i love being in northern parts of the US and in Canada for the snow. I like the Max for low light, audio, and power pano, the X for small size and hyperlapse. The X is the 360 equivalent of a GoPro Session 5. The video might not be perfect, but its small size gets some really unique shots going into tiny holes.
Thanks for the comparisons... I have just taken delivery of an Insta360 One X2 here in Thailand. I am very impressed and hooked NOW... Capturing and publishing lots of Songkhran (Thai New Year) stuff on TH-cam.... Which accessories was a issue, but I worked it out and created a video to help others.
One-r all the way for me, its an absolute game changer! they also dont take the piss when it comes to accessories pricing the way gopro do, you can get the external mic input for instance for $10 - imagine that from gopro? it would be at LEAST $50! All i am looking out for with the one-r is i want a larger battery option available with "normal" mounts on the bottom of it like the gopro max has that tuck away, other than that - im totally sold! You forgot to mention the one-r dji mavic addition they are coming out with what allows you to strap it to a mavic and get footage from the drone!
Hey, Ben. Great job creating your videos using 360 cameras. I love both your reviews and also how you compare features among cameras. I love my Insta360 One X . I like how it stitches the footage more than the One R. However, I would love a waterproof camera, plus the better audio. Please feel free to take a look into my work if you fancy. I try to mix my work as an artist and the way I see light doing photography. Cheers!
I have the One X. Will I get the One R? Probably not only because they are near identical at this time. I like the low profile of the X and the all-weather batteries do help a lot. I am not convinced the X or R are really full on action cams like the Max. Consumer grade 360 cams, yes. I mainly use my phone as my video screen when I record with the X so dim screen is ok in low light. I will wait until another consumer cam makes a debut and then consider putting my X to ZZZZZZ.
Yet another in a long line of great reviews! Thank you Ben! This may be where my budget begins to fall behind your recommendations. The One X is still a bit out of my price range, so I'm not going to be able to reach the One R or GoPro Max. But your reviews are helping me to stay informed on which camera would work best for the type of filming I want to do. So thank you for all your hard work!
One R is drawing me in myself. I have the One X, but no normal action cam. I think the modularity of the One R would give me both rather than me buying a standard Go Pro to pair with my One X.
stunts the low light quality is going to be the test that ultimately makes my decision. And I agree, the modularity means I carry one camera with a couple mods/batteries rather than multiple cameras and different types of batteries.
I bought my Gopro Max about a month ago, so far happy about the quality of the videos. But the app to reframe had been a pain since there's no long press to track object or any other insta360 mobile app functionalities. Hope gopro could look into that and at least try to catch up on the app side. Again great video and amazing comparison!
Something I've noticed after watching a few different comparison videos from multiple channels. All of these cameras are all very good. I think this is a very good place to be in when not one company sits a lot higher than any other. There are some specific cases but overall I like all of them. I'm planning on saving up for a OneR btw. I'm hoping the modular feature is going it be really useful in the future. I'm planning on mounting one on my motorcycle on the front fairing.
spatial audio on the max is atm a no go on windows, due a isue with the exporter, and ya, software for android still is shoit, and u need a high phone, while a iphone 6 what has the A9 works (not yet tested,so cant confirm if the realtime view is smooth)
though i'm still checking the other videos, i'd like to see what that ice rink would have looked like in -1 or -2 EV. i also want to know how i can use this as a super wide photo maker. can i shoot a room, like a room and there is a desk i want to get but couldn't get in there with my big camera. could i use this camera instead, and then some how straighten it? that's one of the bonus functions i'd like to see.
Have you updated your One R’s firmware to the latest? I just want to warn you that if you do get the new firmware, it has eliminated the Quick Capture feature. After contacting tech support from Insta360 they confirmed that this feature is no longer available and they have no explanation why they got rid of it. Also they do not plan to add it back.
I like the unique sound test at 7:29 - You keep your hands aside, I assume to prevent sound escape in other directions and probably to have lungs filled with more air? ;) :) And seriously, another great test, I like and I'm waiting for Qoocam 8K test as well.
Hey Ben, why don't you guys do more of qoocam 8k review. I feel like it hasn't gotten the real review yet. How tos, tips and tricks, features, is it that bad. Real life test
The reason is the workflow has not been fully ready and I couldn’t even stitch my content until just recently. I’ll be posting 3 videos about it in the coming weeks :)
As an early owner of the GoPro max I’d advise, without a moment’s hesitation, don’t buy one. The app works poorly unless you have a hyper-phone, iPad or Mac. Wouldn’t work consistently on my very good android or fairly new iPad. It’s generally (but not always) stable for editing on the new iPad I bought specifically for it. No windows support. A lot of users are really fed up about this. GoPro promised months ago they were working on this - so far nothing but the occasional weak excuse. auto-upload to go pro plus keeps failing, making the subscription a complete waste of money as I can’t manually upload. I’ve never had to do a factory reset so often. The editing software is poor compared to insta. No way to get external sound in. No simple external controller, meaning I can’t switch it on or off while riding. The phone control just isn’t reliable enough for this. Battery life is really poor. The battery runs down significantly when it’s not in use. It sometimes randomly switches itself on when lying about. No idea why, but it does. I couldn’t be more disappointed in this product and this company, which is keen to sell, but less keen to support.
Glad to have read your review as i was debating between the max and the one-r and i just cannot find a reason to NOT buy the 360one-r so i think that is what i am going to go for!
I have just ordered the Insta360 one R. thanks for your review you have convinced me even more. I hope I get it within 15 days as their website says. can't wait to make great videos with it. Thanks
It seems like they are super behind on orders . A guy comenting on here said he ordered his on the 7th and they still havent shipped his out yet. I ordered mine on the 17 and it still hasnt been shipped
Hi Ben! When do you plan to do a video on the 1-inch mod? Love the video reviews so far--trying to decide which one to buy for my upcoming trip to Japan for a first-time vlog. :D Not sure if I would benefit more on the 1-inch or the twin so I'm going to wait for your review first.
Well you were in our neck of the woods reviewing the camera I am looking at. Wish I had know we could have taken you fishing and tested it inside our SnoBear.
@@BenClaremont wow! I'm looking for a 360 action camera. I film 4wd and motorcycle adventure videos where I'm planning to put the camera on the side of the car and bike. Which camera do you recommend. The camera may cop a hiding especially in the side of my 4wd. I edit with Filmora 9 Pro. Cheers Jim
Your videos with the one r came out very clear and nice, I have been looking at other videos samples on TH-cam and the quality is bad and blurry...Did you upload from sd card to computer or did you use the mobile app? I want to know if the app's compression is causing the other videos to look bad
My wife and I are professional photographers looking at offering virtual tours in our services. We are debating between the One X and the Z1. I am having a hard time finding a place to rent these two to compare. Any ideas as to where I could rent in the USA?
As I am re-viewing this video, I get to appreciate it much more. Then with time, your thoughts and analysis, more understanding... I see more clearly where this "action puzzle-camera" sits. Thanks to your work, thank you ! The folks at Insta360 have done some serious job of creating something rather unique. And expandable. Other good thing is we don't have to wait for months before getting an already serious offer in terms of versatility : with the available range of modules, there are so many aspects of action filming covered. What's missing (from a small-scale creator point of view) this "came-range" doesn't cover ? Who knows where those people shall take us and what we can expect (hope ?) them to invent...
@@BenClaremont Really? That's a shame. I was hoping you had filmed with the GoPro colour setting so that if I filmed in the Flat colour setting, there would be more dynamic range available. Thanks for coming back to me.
I have the GoPro Max and found it to be easy to set up and operate, as well to Export and upload to TH-cam. I climb Mountains as well as along Cascades and WaterFalls. Almost bought the Insta360 R yesterday, because on a climb the Lenses on both sides scratched. and well didn.t want another app on cell Thanks for the great comparisons insta360 has clearer visual in dark places, though the Action on the Ice Skating is spectacular ... also I don't edit any footage 👦🏻👍🏻🏞🏔❄☃🏁🏎🏔🗻🧗🏻♂️ I miss the Snow and it's been 2 weeks already

I dont know why, but I totally enjoyed his clear practical style of review. And I found myself smiling too, watching Ben running through the snow.
I think I've finally found the camera that I'll pull the trigger on. I'm also still rocking a Hero 3. So the One R will be the best option for me when it comes to getting into 360 as well as upgrading my action cam.
Good comparison Ben. The real difference between the One R and Max seems to mostly be about personal preferences and the intended use of the camera.
Wow! Super ultra detailed review. Keep up the awesome work.

Ben I picked up the one R a few weeks ago and I love it. Thanks for all the vids it helps a lot when deciding. You ROCK.

are testing the lensguards for Max and One R as well?
In your list of tasks, include a video about Trailblazer (GoPro Max / StreetView). :-D
Is there any 360 camera where you can add on ND filters on them?
Not yet but i haven’t really seen a need to use one with 360 content as the shooting process is pretty different to cameras where you’d need one
Hey- I stitched & reframed these on desktop.. usually it’s a bit better quality when you do that :)
Hello what is the Lowest Resolution can One R can record?
My wife and I are professional photographers looking at offering virtual tours in our services. We are debating between the One X and the Z1. I am having a hard time finding a place to rent these two to compare. Any ideas as to where I could rent in the USA?
Not sure, but I’d say for sure you should get the Qoocam 8K as it has the best quality for virtual tours
Was the A cam the BMPCC4K? The image looks phenomenal. Especially at the aquarium.
Thanks, yes we’ll spotted 👍
Great job. For me Max is the best.
One x is a clear winner for me :) the max is producing very dark videos in all conditions with clearly low DR
Love to hear what you think of the One X2
Hi Ben, did you use the GoPro Max in Flat or GoPro mode?
Flat
@@BenClaremont Really? That's a shame. I was hoping you had filmed with the GoPro colour setting so that if I filmed in the Flat colour setting, there would be more dynamic range available. Thanks for coming back to me.
I have the GoPro Max and found it to be easy to set up and operate, as well to Export and upload to TH-cam. I climb Mountains as well as along Cascades and WaterFalls.
Almost bought the Insta360 R yesterday, because on a climb the Lenses on both sides scratched. and well didn.t want another app on cell
Thanks for the great comparisons insta360 has clearer visual in dark places, though the Action on the Ice Skating is spectacular ... also I don't edit any footage 👦🏻👍🏻🏞🏔❄☃🏁🏎🏔🗻🧗🏻♂️ I miss the Snow and it's been 2 weeks already
