  • Archeologists were shocked when they discovered perfectly round stones, too large to move, and too perfect to be made by man... Could it be that all the secrets lie inside these mysterious, round, stone spheres? Well a bunch of researchers thought so, and cracked them open, what they found was disappointing, and raised even more questions. Check out today's video where we examine these strange, unexplainable, stone spheres and see what science has to say about them!

Costarican here, the theory is that they were used to represent their hierarchical position in the village, the bigger the stone the higher up that person or family was in the food chain. Also one of the theories is that they were carved using a hollowed tree base and they were shaped by hammering them and rotating them in the tree base. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!

  • @ZaMus
    @ZaMus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +128

My theory is: They (the spheres) were a sign of power and wealth cause it took certainly a long time to carve them, and this time could the civilisation have spend on other things like growing crops, conquering land etc. and whoever had the biggest stone sphere was the most powerful cause it was a sign of: "Hey, look at my stone sphere, i dont need to conquer land i can put my time and effort in a stone sphere."
That´s atleast my thought about those Stone spheres.

The Spheres are not in Guayabo - Turrialba, that is too deep inside the country, up on a volcano hill. Guayabo is pretty impressive though, built by the Huetares with perfect water preservation systems that still work called sometimes "the Costa Rican Machu Pichu" only about 4% has been excavated as its deeply covered by the jungle.
The Spheres are located in the Spheres Park o "Parque de las Esferas" in Palmar Sur near the Pacific coast.

Here is how I would make one.
    1. Place a stick in the ground
    2. Tie a string to it and make a perfect circle
    3. Use the perfect circle to make a hemi circle tool out of wood to use to make sure the curves are correct
    4. Slowly carve the stone and sand it until it makes a near perfect fit to the tool you made.
I don't know what they are for but I would use them as a movable weight for machines or something. A sphere is much easier to move than a cube and the weight is probably close enough for whatever they needed it for

My theory is that the spheres were a physical representation of their dead family members(spirits of their ancestors) or royalty that died. The stones could have been like a tomb stone, but the circular shape could have meant something, like the smoothness represents purity. Maybe they would come back to visit the spheres and make them smoother as time passed to honor their ancestors. Small spheres could have been for children and larger ones for relatives. Maybe the smaller ones were even carried around.

Erosion. The tooling marks left measured against the erosion of the rocks surface. Costa Rica gets a lot of rain, so they could estimate the average year of rain in that region and how much erosion that amount of rain causes to that type of rock every year. Then you just work backwards till the measured data matches the calculated erosion.

An simple why to carve a nearly perfect sphere out of a stone with VERY primitive tech would be to find 2 trees, attach a horizontal branch between them 15 to 20 feet up. Then you find the hardest type of stone that you can, find one that isn't too much work to move, 20 to 40 pounds should do. You hang this stone with cordage (vine, rope, animal gut, the less stretch is has the better) from your branch in the middle to make a pendulum and so that the lowest point the stone hangs a little higher from the ground than diameter of the sphere you want to make. Now you can bring in the rock you want to turn into a sphere under your pendulum and all you need to do is swing the pendulum into the sphere rock, chipping pieces of the sphere rock off until the pendulum cant hit the sphere rock anymore. Then you rotate your rock into a new position and swing the pendulum into it again chipping off more pieces. Repeat this until you have a sphere. Then polish smooth with water and sand.

I don't know about how they were made, but once made transportation is easy.
They'll roll easier than the slabs used to make Stonehenge, anyway.

the stones were catapult ammo and landed there by chance, the stones were moved many times which got every side of the stones a hammering from the natural weather.
rain hammered the stones into a perfect sphere over the years

What happens if this was just a trend. Like the aluminum foil ball trend that people were making a while back. I mean those took a lot of effort and there really was no point. So what happens if this was just a trend, to see to could make the most perfect circle.

My guess would be some rudimentary form of chemistry and amalgam. Some long lost recipe to form the smoothness of the larger stones.

I think the perfect spheres were made by ancient humans who weren't as lazy as the gen Z and didn't have the help of machines in every thing they do. Machines have evolved us in many ways than you think.
