This is a very good statement. Absolutely I can underline it. Meditation whilst sitting is hard for me ( i m meurodivers/ adhd) but since I do yoga I feel like my brain can calm down and I feel light balanced and strong after a session
An Ashtanga yoga daily practice has given me more back, than I could ever give to myself! youthfulness, energy, aliveness, enthusiasm, & mostly living in the present moment (no longer creating😮time)
I spent ten weeks in France helping an Ashtanga teacher set up a retreat centre... i did yoga and meditation every day and even taught myself how to jog... interesting how I applied yogic principles to an activity that I previously did not like and made it an enjoyable process. I transitioned from Ashtanga to Sivananda while at the retreat centre which seemed to upset my teacher, but it felt like a natural step to explore the inner attention during poses... I moved away from yoga after this period and 20 years later am in dire need of bringing it back to my life... watching this video is my first step... thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! And what an interesting one it was! Well, welcome back to the weird and wonderful world of yoga and it’s an honor to be part of your journey :-)

My goodness, what a wonderful video. For some reason, I am drawn to Ashtanga yoga specifically. You are a lovely representative for the practice and offer such a clear, comprehensive introduction. Many thanks!
this video really helped me in understanding the main differences and how it basically works! I'm having my first Mysore ashtanga class next week so I'm really excited for that now and I know what to expect :)
Thank you. What a clear and great explanation. I am just discovering ashtanga yoga and this has been really helpful. I am very excited to start the journey.
It feels good that people like you in Western world are teaching what Yoga is according to Patanjali. It feels very cliche when I see some people making money in the name of 4-5 different poses and calling it Yoga. Your information is research based and everybody in the west should go to the direct source of knowledge i.e the orignal textbooks before considering anyone a "Master". Thank you for spreading correct information.
I understand what you mean. Unfortunately yoga in the West is how you described, not always, but most of the times. I was lucky enough to learn Ashtanga yoga from a teacher who frequently went to Mysore, India and that is why I then started traveling to India, to learn from the 'source'.
Thank you! I really like the way you explain this style of yoga and your demonstrations. I also must say, I loved your demonstrations with you talking as you go….vs voice over.
Thank you for the explanation. I like the research and context you provided. I am definitely equally if not more interested in the other aspects of yoga beyond the physical practice which I see as a good gateway and connection to those things.
You are very welcome! Over the years I have also become a lot more interested in yoga beyond asanas, or 'yoga off the mat' as it is sometimes referred to. I've been thinking of making more videos about this so good to know there's some interest :-)
@@ThisYogaLife-ak I would love to hear about the other 7 limbs and how to practice them "off the mat" thank you for this great overview and explanation 🙏

Hi Alexia, It’s on Hydra, run by Penelope in her home. It starts tomorrow, a little nervous but excited for the challenge, it’s my first yoga retreat and I’ve being doing your vids for the last week to get up to speed. So thank you again. Best online yoga I’ve tried and I’ve tried a few!! Best , Michelle 🙏🥰

thank you so much. Excellent introduction. What is the best yoga for beginner dancer. I am starting to lean different dance style moves. Can you please suggest the yoga poses that will improve balance and concentration. Appreciate your help very much.
I do both, following a class but also alone. Some postures I want to take longer, slower, or try them more times (inversions for example). So I like to take my time and follow my body (also considering all the sequences of course)
I'm the same, sometimes I like to take a bit longer in poses to really try to get into them better. And you are completely right, it really is important to listen to and follow what our body needs :-)
Hi Alexia. I hope you are well. Thank you for this clear and helpful introduction to Ashtanga. This is a genuine question, but what do you do if you can't even touch your toes? I'm 55 years old and rigid as a board having never done any kind of flexibility exercises or sport in my life!
Wonderful question! I’ve taught many beginners over the years. What I’ve noticed is that regardless of your level of flexibility, if you can start a regular practice (for example 3 times a week) you will quickly notice a great improvement in your flexibility. You could start off with a gentle practice like this one: th-cam.com/video/eWzn6UXza6A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LKUHBzYj9lJp9PX0 and then try a 15 minute ashtanga practice th-cam.com/video/9qaSQokicUg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=toP48hvPrrXMX8cY and when that feels comfortable you can build from there. I hope that helps!

Dear Alexia, this is such a great, helpful and explaining video. Thank you so much. I feel that in my yogalates class, what is a fusion but I would say more ashtanga yoga than pilates my teacher is following this scheme. F eg I did the sunsolutation with your explanation and feel that I can t hold my breath as long and have to inhale sooner, as in the class. What would you recommend? Doing and inhale inbetween or stay in my breath rythm whilst in class but than I am delayed or out of rythm and this is than hard to follow the group..
As I'm currently researching Yoga (asanas) to find the best class for me, this was one of the best explanations of Ashtanga I've heard so far! So clear and structured, it was exactly what one needs in this world where everyone has their own explanations. Thank you! 🙏 One question though if I may. Are there other differences between Power Yoga and Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga than the "the latter two don't follow the same set of asanas"?
Thank you for the lovely comment and interesting question! Ok let's see. Ashtanga yoga is a set sequence of poses and we hold each pose for 5 breaths. Think of Vinyasa Flow and Power yoga as more free style Ashtanga practices. The basis may be the same, but in Vinyasa Flow the focus is more on the flowing in and out of poses (and maybe even working on a peak pose), whereas in Power yoga we may be focusing more on long holds to build strength. One further difference is that there is no music in Ashtanga, while there can be music in Vinyasa Flow and Power yoga. All 3 types can be great for anyone who likes a more dynamic form of yoga. Try them all and you may feel like you prefer one over the other. For me, after trying them all I found that I preferred Ashtanga. But that's me! I do hope you find what you're looking for :-)
@@ThisYogaLife-ak Thank you for taking the time to answer my question in that level of detail. 🙏Currently I'm leaning toward the more systematic and structured approach of Ashtanga. I have tried Vinyasa twice to different instructors. One was very reminiscent of Ashtanga, slow, deliberate and it felt like a meditation; the instructor stopped giving classes. The other was more like a high-intensity fitness bodybuilding training with many postures from Ashtanga, some others postures and some pure core fitness excercises; it left me exhausted, nervous and anxious. I'll consider trying Power Yoga too, just to get a better idea of the styles. However, currently, Ashtanga seems to have most of what I want. Apparently, I'll be spending a lot of time on your channel - there's so much to learn! :) Thank you deeply for your effort in putting this channel together.
