Thank you for keeping the tradition alive. I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Sharath. Thinking of you and the whole Ashtanga community today

You have been one of my inspirations on my yoga journey.
Yoga helps us understand the ultimate truth, but unfortunately, many people today see it as merely a shortcut to curing diseases or directly addressing mental health issues. They often overlook the deeper aspects of yoga, showing little interest in exploring the other limbs beyond asanas, pranayama, and dhyana.

All of this is not unique to just ashtanga... it's all under Hatha from which ashtanga was born. I also sadly rarely take class with ashtanga teachers who even mention things from the other limbs of yoga, or any of the spirituality/esoteric aspects of yoga. I am not saying none of them do, but I am saying many with whom I've taken class with did not have as much knowledge as my teacher in the Hatha "lineage."

Kino you are a great inspiration. I am finding that now I am in my 40's my flexibility is slowing down. I find i become tight even after regular asana practice and cant even get into poses like king pigeon anymore like I used to 10 years ago. Is this normal or part of the body becoming stiff at certain stages of life, at least for some of us? Would be good to know. i dont know whats happening to my body right now.

      Perimenopause- that’s what’s happening.

Vata dosha (cold and dry) is naturally increasing in the body as we age. We need to make our dietary habits and environment warmer, softer, cozier. This should help with the asana practice, along with more effective breathwork. It's a great opportunity to reconsider your practice and look at it from a different angle. Maybe find a set of new more thoughtful approaches to old asanas. The other reason is that you are now way stronger than 10 years ago and it reduced your flexibility.
I am myself trying to balance strength and flexibility (age 39). Handstands are cool but it had affected my back flexibility so I started worrying about my age 😂. I had to use a more thoughtful approach to return the skills

@@angela5002 Well I am now trying to work with the fascia and see if that makes a difference. It requires u to hold the pose for 2 - 5 minutes and is more effective than holding for just 30 seconds and can be permanent in increasing your range of motion.

May I make one suggestion? Perhaps complement your Ashtanga practice with Iyengar Yoga
There is a brilliant teacher by the name of Cat de Rham who is a v significant presence on TH-cam
Iyengar is a slower form of yoga focused on flexibility and strength and focused on proper alignment
Poses are held for longer, you really sink in
I am in your age range and Iyengar has improved my flexibility tremendously; no more cracking joints, a much higher degree of mobility
And it complements my Ashtanga practice perfectly
I am, admittedly, more a follower of Laruga Glaser but Kino I love just as much
But have a look at some of Cat’s practices - this may just help you ❤

@@_Pat_1111No - am in same age range and been premenopausal for years
But with some additional practices in a different form of yoga, my flexibility and mobility have both improved exponentially
This whole concept that age slows you down is a myth
Yoga is a practice that I have found that actually reverses the aging practice in a way - I used to be a runner / creaky joints, messed up knee etc etc
Yoga reversed all that and I am in better physical shape now at age 49 I have ever been

I don’t know all the details about what brings on your throat infections, but regular Neti potting (unless you also suffer from ear infections) and throat gargles with lukewarm water with salt might be worth giving a try. You can also gargle with water infused with different herbs and spices such as turmeric or ginger (to name a few). I don’t know if that’s what you meant by yogic remedy but I hope it helps in some way.
