I just found your channel and subscribed for I like your way of thinking. I live in Sacramento and have not used HVAC at all this year, just my woodstove. The fire dies out in the evening and it’s approximately 58° when I wake up. And I too have blanketed off all entryways and just heat the living room, sleeping on a fouton bed Is how I’m living this winter. I’m learning preindustrial skills, I’ve learned to bake pizza and potatoes in the woodstove and biscuits. I’m trying, just like you and I’m alone and 67-year-old woman! woodfire ist the most cosy heat you can have. we are heating our 168m3 brickhouse from 1926 with a woodstove and we need between 10 an 12m3 of firewood a year. since wo have our own forest ther is only the work to be done.
Just to let you know...there are some huge collectors of old Wheel Horse mowers. I somehow lucked into my Uncle's that happened to be the very first model of riding mower they made. Still in excellent shape, though the paint isn't as good as yours has. Somehow people learned of it and I have been offered over $9,000 sight unseen. Just by what someone had told them. So keep that old girl in good shape and you may have a real collectors item worth a good amount of $$. Most just get tossed away (at least here in the US) when a new model is bought because it has more cup holders (seriously). Love your journey. Have lived nearly off grid my whole life, other than when in the Army. It is so much healthier. Especially mentally. If you can find a way to live there full time I think you would never want to go to a city again. Over here the best schools are usually in the rural areas. And if you can get even a half-decent cell signal then perhaps you two could work from home full time.

When you have a wood fire in a fireplace or stove the exhaust going outside will cause cold air to be drawn into the house to feed the fire. Think of providing an inlet in a know spot near the stove. If you have enough land then you could put some culverts under ground to pull air through to pick up some of the earth's heat in the winter. Also could be used in the summer to cool the house.
Yeah, we know 😊 That’s why we close it in winter, and are looking for a inlet that fits our funny shaped fireplace. I’m not sure if we could pull hear from under ground without power, being off-grid. Thank you for your advice and taking the time to write 😃 Annie

Starting fire without starter is easiest if you use a feather stick. One of the small pieces that you use, and you cut small slivers without cutting them completely off. Your stick is ready to use when it looks vaguely like a feather.

Would a small Morso Squirrel wood stove fit in that fireplace? If not maybe you can extend the hearth so it sits just outside the fireplace then vent it into the chimney.

I love your life style! Very nice cabin and location. For your fire place you could get a high efficiency fire place insert. That would be a much more efficient at heating your cabin. You would get better burn time with a larger fire box than your cook stove!

We put an insert into a fireplace when we lived in the country. It came out of the opening enough to boil water on the top. It had a 45 degree angle inside before going up the chimney at 90 degree angle. We never had to clean the chimney. It burned so clean, no creosote. And yes it held the heat all night for us
Could I ask you how much was the cabin? I'm a single woman, who owns a doggy and a horse and I'm hoping to move to Sweden to live just like the two of you. I have no idea where to start looking for cheap cabins like yours and I'm on the budget. Also, wow, 500$ Year to heat up your cabin! That is amazing. I'm am currently paying 300€ a month to heat up rented apartment in Dublin🤣

We mounted a box fan above our wood stove to aid in pushing the hot air around the area. as far as starting the fire: We put in a small ball of paper, then wood shavings on top of that, then kindling sticks. Light the paper then shut the door. Make sure air intake below the grating (where you collect ash) is OPEN. This will draw in external oxygen through the bottom then push it up your stack of kindling and get a good fire going very quickly as the natural draw will pull in oxygen to feed the fire. Always make sure that you empty any ash into a METAL bucket (our neighbor's house burned down). When you check on the fire, especially in the morning, open the door very slowly. Give it a 4mm gap, then wait a few seconds, then open it fully. The environment inside the fire box can be very oxygen poor sitting all night depending on how you have your vents set. When given oxygen from the outside environment it can leap out at you and hurt you. Speaking of vents, when you go to sleep for the night you can close your air intake vents to a minimum. This keeps the fire's reaction rate low and keeps the fire burning longer at a lower temperature which is better for sleeping - low and steady heat.
Cutting your own firewood can be done safely. If you're going to heat your own house I would recommend a chainsaw and a wood splitter. 8 m3 is about 2.2 US "cord" of wood or just over 4 pick-up truck loads. Very, very doable. We get deadfall trees from our neighborhood these days, don't even have to cut any trees down (which can be dangerous). We get the wood and they get rid of the tree so there is no cost, but it doesn't look like you have many neighbors. All of our wood for the last 20+ years has come from a 10 mile radius area (62.8 square miles or ~160 square km)
And by woodsplitter, we have a small gasoline operated unit that drives a hydraulic piston and splits the wood. The size of the unit depends on your species. For example, American Oak can get quite stringy and may bind a smaller unit. Birch, Larch, Poplar should split relatively easy with their straight grain. However, the less dense your species of wood the faster it will burn in your oven. American Oak, for example, will burn significantly longer than something light like willow. Keep those heavier, denser woods for overnight or when you will be away awhile. I'm sure you are aware, but the larger the piece the longer it will burn however your firebox looks fairly small.
Thank you for all this advice! I will save it 😊 We do have a metal bucket for the ash, and also a wood splitter. Here we primarily use birch. And we also got green lights on picking up fallen trees in the area - as you say, it’s a win-win ☺️ So nice to hear how you do it. Love, Annie

Hi Louise ❤️ How cool that you have a caravan! Yes. Here at least, we need to heat up the chimney before lighting a fire in the stove, or else the smoke will come back down 🌫 (when it’s cold!) My Chimney Guy gave me good idea. When the wind is bad in the stone jimney, take the hairdryer and put it to work on the lowest hole (where you usually get jimney cleaned) in hight temp for some seconds. It will start to blow the wind much better.

I use to work in a machine shop receiving parts in cardboard and wood crates. One ply cardboard is useless, but 2 ply has a R 18 rating while most houses have R12. If you can get 3 ply it's around R27. If you are good with a knife and a can of spray glue you are good to go. Some use 3" of spray foam which I opted not to use, because if it ever gets wet it will never dry out. Cardboard can wet to, but it easier to remove than wet foam. Use a smoking cigarette to check for air leaks before applying insulation. Have you got some money, then Pink Panther would be my choice
@@AnnieJulian well of course you have to fill in the wall maybe with a smaller chimney with wood stove set up going up that side of the house. The upstairs draft I'd use plywood for a sideways opening door/ plug supported by 3 hinges. Gotta be a way to quit using quilts every morning. Anyone who can put the chimney through walls to heat other rooms on the way out is the genius.
@@AnnieJulian Okay, what i meant was if it's a newly produced stove or if they have restored an old one, because where you bought it there was several other stoves aswell.
Too bad you couldn't do a chimney insert, and take full advantage of the thermal mass of the masonry hearth and chimney. It sounds like you're still getting some benefit just from having a warm stove next to it. An open hearth leaves you cold as soon as the fire goes out, but if you can install a chimney insert, with an air intake direct to the outside, it wouldn't create a draft. The house I'm in, now, has a GAS insert, which is far less satisfactory than a wood-burning insert would be. But don't let me rain on your parade. The stove/oven appears to do the job just fine, plus you do your cooking on it.

A fireplace can heat the house if it is placed in the center of the house the bricks of the chimney hold heat I remember the brick chimney running through the attic rooms. Our fireplace had a strong draft if you lit a piece of newspaper it would go up the chimney and hit the hardware cloth cage at the top of the chimney. The cage was put there to keep the chimney sweep birds out. 73
I'm surprised that your fireplace didn't have a damper on it so you could close it and if you want something for more heat get some crisco and glass jars and heat it up to melt it to liquid or soft enough to put a small candle in it and use some clay pots to put over it while burning it .
@@AnnieJulian what the crisco does is burns slowly and under clay pots it builds up heat and that let's it put off heat and it's used for emergency heat for those who lose electricity in the winter and allows you to stay warm and it will burn up to 36 days using 8 hours a day there are videos on this.

We mounted a box fan above our wood stove to aid in pushing the hot air around the area.
as far as starting the fire: We put in a small ball of paper, then wood shavings on top of that, then kindling sticks. Light the paper then shut the door. Make sure air intake below the grating (where you collect ash) is OPEN. This will draw in external oxygen through the bottom then push it up your stack of kindling and get a good fire going very quickly as the natural draw will pull in oxygen to feed the fire.
Always make sure that you empty any ash into a METAL bucket (our neighbor's house burned down).
When you check on the fire, especially in the morning, open the door very slowly. Give it a 4mm gap, then wait a few seconds, then open it fully. The environment inside the fire box can be very oxygen poor sitting all night depending on how you have your vents set. When given oxygen from the outside environment it can leap out at you and hurt you.
Speaking of vents, when you go to sleep for the night you can close your air intake vents to a minimum. This keeps the fire's reaction rate low and keeps the fire burning longer at a lower temperature which is better for sleeping - low and steady heat.
Cutting your own firewood can be done safely.
If you're going to heat your own house I would recommend a chainsaw and a wood splitter.
8 m3 is about 2.2 US "cord" of wood or just over 4 pick-up truck loads.
Very, very doable. We get deadfall trees from our neighborhood these days, don't even have to cut any trees down (which can be dangerous). We get the wood and they get rid of the tree so there is no cost, but it doesn't look like you have many neighbors. All of our wood for the last 20+ years has come from a 10 mile radius area (62.8 square miles or ~160 square km)
And by woodsplitter, we have a small gasoline operated unit that drives a hydraulic piston and splits the wood.
The size of the unit depends on your species. For example, American Oak can get quite stringy and may bind a smaller unit. Birch, Larch, Poplar should split relatively easy with their straight grain.
However, the less dense your species of wood the faster it will burn in your oven.
American Oak, for example, will burn significantly longer than something light like willow. Keep those heavier, denser woods for overnight or when you will be away awhile.
I'm sure you are aware, but the larger the piece the longer it will burn however your firebox looks fairly small.
Thank you for all this advice! I will save it 😊 We do have a metal bucket for the ash, and also a wood splitter. Here we primarily use birch. And we also got green lights on picking up fallen trees in the area - as you say, it’s a win-win ☺️

Yes. Here at least, we need to heat up the chimney before lighting a fire in the stove, or else the smoke will come back down 🌫 (when it’s cold!)

My Chimney Guy gave me good idea. When the wind is bad in the stone jimney, take the hairdryer and put it to work on the lowest hole (where you usually get jimney cleaned) in hight temp for some seconds. It will start to blow the wind much better.

I use to work in a machine shop receiving parts in cardboard and wood crates. One ply cardboard is useless, but 2 ply has a R 18 rating while most houses have R12. If you can get 3 ply it's around R27. If you are good with a knife and a can of spray glue you are good to go. Some use 3" of spray foam which I opted not to use, because if it ever gets wet it will never dry out. Cardboard can wet to, but it easier to remove than wet foam. Use a smoking cigarette to check for air leaks before applying insulation. Have you got some money, then Pink Panther would be my choice
I'd think about dismantling the chimney and fireplace to repurpose the bricks into a walkway or maybe an outdoor bbq area.

@@AnnieJulian well of course you have to fill in the wall maybe with a smaller chimney with wood stove set up going up that side of the house. The upstairs draft I'd use plywood for a sideways opening door/ plug supported by 3 hinges. Gotta be a way to quit using quilts every morning. Anyone who can put the chimney through walls to heat other rooms on the way out is the genius.

@@ESPirits87 Ohh! No, we didn't buy a newly produced one. We went to Anna's Kuriosa (as we so often do) and chose from her selection of used ovens.
Too bad you couldn't do a chimney insert, and take full advantage of the thermal mass of the masonry hearth and chimney. It sounds like you're still getting some benefit just from having a warm stove next to it.
An open hearth leaves you cold as soon as the fire goes out, but if you can install a chimney insert, with an air intake direct to the outside, it wouldn't create a draft. The house I'm in, now, has a GAS insert, which is far less satisfactory than a wood-burning insert would be.
But don't let me rain on your parade. The stove/oven appears to do the job just fine, plus you do your cooking on it.

A fireplace can heat the house if it is placed in the center of the house the bricks of the chimney hold heat I remember the brick chimney running through the attic rooms. Our fireplace had a strong draft if you lit a piece of newspaper it would go up the chimney and hit the hardware cloth cage at the top of the chimney. The cage was put there to keep the chimney sweep birds out. 73

I'm surprised that your fireplace didn't have a damper on it so you could close it and if you want something for more heat get some crisco and glass jars and heat it up to melt it to liquid or soft enough to put a small candle in it and use some clay pots to put over it while burning it .

@@AnnieJulian what the crisco does is burns slowly and under clay pots it builds up heat and that let's it put off heat and it's used for emergency heat for those who lose electricity in the winter and allows you to stay warm and it will burn up to 36 days using 8 hours a day there are videos on this.
