in all honesty, i would put gundam seed, or victory before eva could even get close to the list. i mean, you not only see people getting decapitated, and literaly microwaved alive, but also getting cut in half and baked. and then there's victory which goes over the top in its death scenes.
The fact that Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, Gundam: Thunderbolt and MSG: F91 isnt on this list is insane. Bubblegum Crisis and appleseed are gritty mecha anime, with good cyberpunk themes
Well Cross Ange isnt on it as well, and its very gory when girls are getting blasted in 2 and others getting eaten by dragons. And it has a great story imo. Also has rasicm and attempted rape in it, doesnt get more gritty than those aspects combined if you ask me. (its racism is a notch above the Gundam rasicm, the show was made by the Gundam Seed cast btw)
Bokurano is by far the darkest on this list and one of the darkest anime of all time. The short description of it doesn't do it justice. And I absolutely love it lol! This was a great list!
Blame! isn't mecha, but it's writer, Nihei Tsutomu, DID write Knights of Sidonia. I highly recommend anything he writes, because they're all unique and creative.
@pills- it very much is. The whole world, what's left of it, is mostly mecha. There's androids and automated builder robots everywhere. Both are mecha and if you went further into classifying them, blame! Would delve into the dystopian cyberpunk realms and knights would be in the space opera, giant robot realm.
Maybe lower your gain during all of these Title sections, and drop the volume in general. You're peaking, and practically blowing speakers out. And my YT video & PC volume are each barely 1/4 of the way up. Technical stuff aside, pretty good vid! ^_^ Nice to see some old favs that are definitely poorly underrated. Also, 86 Eighty Six was *so* popular that, much like NGE, they got some pretty nice (and affordable) model kits of the different protag 'drones'. Really wish the Broken Blade anime hadn't gotten dropped part way through the story. v_v
Pretty the reason why M.D.Giest doesn’t have a high rating is because there’s no hyper drama that you get in most other anime’s and the protagonist isn’t a child with eyes the size of football’s
I only grew up with dark anime... I didn't even know anime had a light side until I was a teen in the late 90s. Every anime I watched, anybody could die at any point to progress the story. It was wild to watch as a kid
id like to point out one thing about SSSS.Gridman for anyone from the 90s the SSSS means superhuman samurai syber squad which used old live action gridman footage for us similar to how power rangers was man , so basically japan is paying omage to our version as well with the anime.
Why not included Victory Gundam on the list? Protagonist who literally child carrying his mom severed head. And battleship with giant wheels run over thousands people plus almost all his friends death at the end of series? The most disturbing gundam series ever made.
If you can, try to find and watch Area 88. It was also made into a side scroller fighter jet game named UN squadron.... No it doesn't have 'mecha' because it's set in the late 70s- early 80s...but fighter jets were the mecha of that generation.
5:58 been searching for this anime for 20+ years ever since I rented it from blockbuster & forgot the title years later, all I could remember was the guy had a blue football lookin helmet 🙌
Ive watch all of them btw thanks for bring us this content to remind others the great series of mecha genre about knights of cidonia is deeply connected to Blame not only created by same author if you watch the season 1 & 2 theres an easter egg that connected to blame
the animation for knights of sidonia initially irritated me but i grew to love both seasons of the show. also there is a movie that actually wraps up the series very nicely. highly recommend
Armored Trooper Votoms is good. The MC has the luck gene. Its crazy, it seems nothing can't kill him. If you shoot him point blank with a gun, something happens to the gun, the bullet, or the person that fires it. Its a good story.
I'll have to check these out. I've already seen NGE, Bokurano, Eighty Six, Blue Gender, and SSS Gridman (of the ones I've seen, this seems like an odd choice for a gory, gritty list),
Some of these I've already watched, like Gasaraki, Evangelion and 86 (and I may be the only person in the world that dislikes 86 even though I love the OST to the bone). Gonna watch Blue Gender, Knights of Sidonia and Broken Blade! Thank you.

How Escaflowne did not make it on this list is beyond me... literally one of the best and most violent anime ever. Pick any of the movies or even the show. And Gundam 0080!? You guy's missed by miles with the list tbh. Besides Evangelion it seems like you guys just focused on mid level/entry level shows and not the cream of the crop.
'gritty and gory anime' - starts with Evangelion. Cripes, this is already off to a bad start ....Bokurano isn't gory or particularly *gritty*. I wouldn't say Getter Robo Armageddon is either. @@UnitedWeStoned I don't really watch gory stuff. Not for the gore anyway. Though I'd throw in Narutaru somewhere for some REAL grit. Elfen Lied and Higurashi are also candidates.
i dont think eva is gory nore that violent, hell, even that gritty compared to how heavy some mecha series get. you could probably fill that list with gundam series. more so if you add the other stuff tomino made while going though his "kill them all "phase.

@@johnhickersantilan4295 The list is literally in the description of the video 🥴
Blue gender. With the popularity of hell divers, a lot of people should be able to go watch it same as for starship troopers.
Blue gender is sick. Saw it first when i was like 13, at midnight or later on cartoon network. Shit gave me nightmares when i first watched it. Lol
You know I never thought about that 😅
Yer it's a great underloved show
It's heavy, I remember being slightly traumatized by it at the end as a kid since I lost all faith in humanity 😂
Saw it for the first time in 2012, man classic anime were actually much better than what we're getting today.
86 is such an underrated anime. Really good anime too. Can't wait for sequel.
It's the right anime being produced in the wrong era.
yeah its severely underrated
Break Blade is No. 1! Best storyline and beautiful animation. I wish we get a continuation of the anime.
The fact that Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, Gundam: Thunderbolt and MSG: F91 isnt on this list is insane.
Bubblegum Crisis and appleseed are gritty mecha anime, with good cyberpunk themes
fr bruh I was expecting at least one gundam show. considering ALL of them are gritty in some way or shape (excluding build)
As a Gundam fan, IBO isn't the amazing show people make it out to be. Thunderbolt is pretty good but F91 is incomplete and rushed.
@@RezaQinelaborate on it not being good

just wanted to say that M.D. Geist was also the poster boy for many Anime on VHS and early DVD i still have some VHS that have his outline on the box.
Detonator Orgun is also a great mecha anime from the early 90s that’s worth a watch 😊
Blame! Was really good.for a recent addition.
Blame isn't really mecha though since Killy just runs around nuking things with his OP gun

@@nofuxgivens2797 That's fine if you consider it a mecha. I guess it depends on how you define mecha as a genre, which gets subjective.
Man! I grew up with all of these animes 😅
Gridman being on this list sticks out like a sore thumb
I was thinking the same thing. I haven't seen it in years but I remember it being more fun and adventurous than dark, gritty, and gory.
I still have my armored troopers toy.

Got some nostalgic vibes from the clips of SSSS Gridman. Reminds me of the old Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad show! Anyone remember that?
Gridman was the Japanese name of that show. The pulled a Power Rangers with it and used the fight footage but reshot the out of battle stuff
Yes. That show is on Amazon prime currently I believe
I stay watching these videos cau they get better n better each day I watch em

Broken Blade anime is my favourite out of all of them
Sooo we are not even gonna mention 'Gundam Thunderbolt', the most brutal Gundam show next to Iron blooded Orphans?? What even is this channel....?
I can confirm M.D Geist´s gore level is just insane. I watched M.D Geist 2 back in the day and holy shit it was insane. 😂
I'm excited for this video
Why not included Victory Gundam on the list? Protagonist who literally child carrying his mom severed head. And battleship with giant wheels run over thousands people plus almost all his friends death at the end of series? The most disturbing gundam series ever made.
I still want to know, why was there a tiny person in Knights of Sidonia! I like that one.
i saw M.D. Geist and had to click.
Thanks for the spoilers!
At the end of Bokurano's first episode we are left like WTF?
6:00 M.D. Giest! HELL YEAH!

Votoms is top 3 to gundam and EVA, very worth the watch, beyond the original ova too cus there are seasons and movie sequels
Blue gender and ghost in the shell very close 4th
MD Geist is awesome
Love Blue Gender
Valvrave is cool AF. Watched one, now a think I'm gonna watch It twice! hiuaehiuahiuaue
Bro, Blue Gender was wild. Good times.
Love to see one of my favorites, break blade, get a shout out.

Being a "Real Robot" rather than "Super Robot" fan, Blue Gender , Armored Trooper Votoms, and Gasaraki are catching my eye. Already seen Evangelion.
Wow
Okay I'm checking out garasaki
Gasaraki?
"Only 12 episodes, you can watch it in a day." Homie, we got jobs. Aint noone got time for that.
Otherwise cool list
This is the type of anime I was raised on
Break Blade is fucking dope
im somewhat amazed that Muv-luv hasnt made it here but then again most of the public versions of the adaptations were censored....
Another great mecha and my all time favorite anime is STRAIN (Strategic armored infantry) sadly it is only one season but it is an amazing season.
I live in Alaska and these anime are indeed as dark as it is here.
gunbuster would fit nice here
what was the outro music?
Does any know the anime called GoDanner? That mecha anime is sooooo underrated!
The Marriage of GOD AND SOUL
Oof, Gasarki. That anime is interesting if nothing else.
Md guest is my shit man hardcore anime right there
Escaflowne would have been a nice addition to the list.
18:25 is the best mecha of all time just so u know
Bokurano is essentially Enders Game lol
It's read as Val(brave) afaik
I didnt get evangelion in the later episodes. Maybe the subtitles were off?

86 Incredibly sad anime. The furs there are made completely tasteless and unremarkable.
