I'm amazed that despite having seen many Catherine the Great documentaries already that this one could still be so interesting and informative. I thoroughly enjoy all The People Profiles videos, especially the ones about monarchs of old. Please keep up the great work!
Other than Catherine’s treatment of the serfs, I think she had an amazing reign in Russia. She was highly intelligent, curious about and supportive of to the Sciences, a more than competent author, and well understood the excellent way to run her military…put the best and most qualified in charge. As for her love life, people just need to get over it. That probably helped her reduce stress and remain sane. Catherine was also aware of the danger of marrying again and wisely steered clear of that.
But for her treatment of the serfs
She was chasing her soul mate who was incarnated as Cecil Rhodes. No matter the body she always finds her soulmate. I’m pretty sure mine isn’t here on earth. So, the idea of a soulmate is very correct as they are the first souls we decided to join and to play games with. We remember the first stories and the first games as nursery rhymes and ball games although missing a lot of detail from the originals.

Even prior to watching this excellent mini documentary about Catherine “the Great,” I have always admired this exceptionally bright and powerful queen. Undoubtedly, she was one of the most remarkable and clever monarchs of the world, at par with her contemporary Frederick “the Great” of Prussia, as well as her predecessors Louis XIV of France and Elizabeth I of England. The fact that such an amazing lady was particularly promiscuous, in my opinion, places Catherine, decisively, among the most fascinating historical personas in European history!

She was one of the greatest Russian leaders ever, regardless of of her gender, though through her femininity created an extremely loyal and competent officer corps.
What did she do? Told a architect, carpenter, mason to build, send a soldier to battle to die, perhaps she labor in a field, she climb a mountain, spend her time in academic studies, is she great because she did it or had someone else do it. Tell me what great about this woman. I use to think the same thing about many French Kings until I personally read accounts of these individuals many French Kings cannot compare to Napoleon the things he did a artillery officer who rose to rank. Most these people are not great just known..

Thank you for this interesting and accurate account of Catherine The Great, a highly intelligent woman who read at a time in history when most women were relegated to take a back seat, she used her intelligence to benefit her country and herself.

So, after researching it on several different Sources It is Definitely A Spinel Not a Ruby. Infact it is a 400 Carat Spinel that is Rimmed in Diamond encrusted Oak leaves. The Spinel had actually been In the royal Collection for quite a while before being used in the Imperial Crown.
She's one of my favorite queens lived life on her terms

I’m sure someone already said this, but the part about the Orlov’s is backwards … Grigori was Catherine’s lover, and Alexei was the one who is rumoured to have murdered Peter III; I’m pretty sure someone already pointed out that the Center red stone on the Imperial Crown is a spinel, not a ruby. Of all of the biographies I watch or read, Catherine the Great’s seem to have the most errors across the board. 🤷🏼♀️ I’m guessing it’s due to all of the rumours about her during her life, but some of these things are easy to fact check now. Not to be overly critical, as I do love the channel!
Lot of focus on the men she bedded. Don’t shame her. Everyone would have praised her if she was a man. She was bright ,clever and a good operator.
She became empress because of men otherwise we wouldn't have known her at all.
My family was one of those who farmed the Volga region in the 1700.

My grandfather Johan Litzenberger migrated with his bride to the Volga area from Germany but it was much later. When the war broke out they escaped to America and settled in Wisconsin. He continued to farm and had 6 girls and two boys. Eventually they moved to Michigan.
If I could have been a Queen, i would have wanted to be Catherine.
She was and is a Brilliant Great woman doing a tough job and excelling at it …the petty childish rumors of how she met her demise proves this jealousy and envy of playing very much mans game as a female ruler 👑

Goodness she was a bit unconventional though I guess taking numerous lovers was acceptable in royal circles. I’m sorry she had to marry a sot. But her strength in taking care of Russia, increasing the land & even raising a grandson who brought my grandma’s family to the Black Sea region makes me happy. She was amazing and died too young.

I just made this comment, I was wondering if anyone else caught that … it’s a pretty big error, as well as the imperial crown mistake (it’s not a ruby, it’s a spinel). For some reason, every time I watch something on Catherine the great, there are always multiple errors.

This has been proven by historians to be mostly vicious rumors of her opponents at that time and later in the clear attempt to damage her reputation.
Such a documentary should not perpetuate such myths but rather rectify them.
Quite disappointing to realize how limited the quality of this video is in at least that regard.

That, and the part about her having one of her ladies “test” “every and any” of her lovers hasn’t been proven. It seems likely that she may have had some of them tested, but, again, it has not been proven as fact. There are a lot of errors, and rumours present as fact, in this one. That seems to be a theme in Catherine the Great biographies.

The fact that she deposed her husband doesn't make her a power hungry tyrant. On the contrary, by doing that she elevated the Russian Empire due to her reforms and successful military campaings against her neighbours.
On the other hand, I can't judge her for her private life. As Terry Thomas said (see down below), how can you judge her for doing that when different Kings or Emperors had mistresses? One thing is for certain, if you got her on her good side, then you're set for life especially if you were a poor bloke that knew how to please her both inside and outside her chamber.

She truly deserves the title "Great"... I don't see a problem she being "promiscuous". As the narrator mentioned, she was smart enough to keep the men in check while taking them to bed with her. Calculating, but smart woman. Great leader indeed
Yes, she kept the men in check, but she could not keep herself in check, great leader indeed. The best leaders are those that lead by example. Having power doesn't make you a leader, and being calculating doesn't equal greatness. I think Prince Albert and Queen Victoria are better examples of leaders.
Promiscous means having more than one man at the same time, which wasn't the case with her. She had relashionships one after another which became shorter and shorter, when she had figured out that her great loves didn't work. Poor Catherine! She was the philosophe on the throne, and people judge her and over her from their point of view, which often consists of envie and sexisme ... f.e. what was allowed to male rulers wasn't allowed to a brillant woman ....
I didn’t like her support of serfdom and desire to keep the lowest classes uneducated, but she objectively did great things for her country.

I was very pleased that the commentator attributed Tsar Paul Petrovich's birth to Catherine's infantile husband and not to her first recorded lover. It makes absolute sense: there was the very strong physical resemblance to the murdered Tsar, and it was well within Catherine's spitefulness towards her heir to have ascribed his birth to a lover. Her second, illegitimate, son - Alexei Bobrinsky - was smuggled away at birth and Catherine never made any effort to see him. That devolved upon her heir: when Paul came to the throne he sought out Alexei, calling him brother, and they had a very natural and kind relationship.
A controversy that could only be solved by DNA. But Catherine was Peter III's 2nd cousin, so sharing those ancestral genes with him, she could possibly have produced a child who resembled her husband without her husband's "assistance."
Read the Russian historical sources - according to them she visited Alexei every now and again, but never told him she was his mother.

How does anyone feel about how it’s been said that Russia is the true successor to the Roman Empire because of the Byzantines and their influence on that entire area of the world, and the split of the Catholic and Orthodox churches, but the Orthodox tends to stay the same as it was when it first began in The Roman Empire. The west with its inheired laws and institutions rooted in the Roman government structure , us the successor though Russia has it clear connections. She was really GREAT! Sophie was only supposed to be a docile little wife and a broodmare. But she had ambitions and acted out on them. Nobody batted an eyelid when a man took what he wanted. But when SHE dared to do so, she was slandered. Double measure some? Well, history gave her the correct name and vindicated her - rightly so. Sure she was despotic, but that was due to the time and circumstances. One cannot rule such a wide dominion with charm and good manners. When Alexander the Great was presented with the Gordian knot he just took out his sword and cut it into pieces. Catherine did the same with the Gordian knots that she faced: Away with the incompetent husband. Anything that isn't up-to-date any more or displeases her: Be gone. And if you are not willing I will use force. ;-)

Several male rulers throughout history were assassinated or deposed when they took what they wanted and gained too much power (e.g. Caesar, Nero, Caligula) .. She was slandered because she acted cruely, not because she was a woman.. If you are looking for positive female role models, there many less cruel female monarchs that have walked this earth.
Can anybody tell me why she was so great what did she do? Tell me something she personally did many Kings personally tax the Jews or enact policies, many rulers had brilliant advisers and minister. If this is the case every ruler should be title Great.
She rid of tyrant rulers and made russia on the peak of golden age. Imagine she isn't even an heir or of blood to russian royalty but she made the title of ruler of russia.

I know how she came into power she married into the ruling family of Russia later marrying her relative. This is how Belgium, Bulgaria, [Portugal (Formerly)], United Kingdom, Central Germany all have the same ruling blood. Why would she allow someone to rule in her place a tyrant instead of having ministers. Ministers govern day to day while she did her queenly duty, eat, fuck, socialize, throw parties someone else govern manage affairs she just like any other ruler.
She was very successful in foreign politics, she never lost a war in her 34 years old reign, crushed or had crushed pretty much all her enemies, liked PR and cared about her image a lot, was very popular among intellectual elites of the time because she supported them financially. Was also well-read and very charismatic, even people who disliked her used to admit how she knew how to please everyone. So she had a very long successful reign, then her son came and started trashing everything. He was killed in 4 years, and her reputation started to shine even better in comparison. For the aristocrats(=elites) of the end of 18th century she was also almost the only living legend of the Ancient Regime world left that was crushing and burning before their eyes.
