There’s a really gd documentary by Neil Oliver, it’s actually a 4 parter about clan warfare, starts at Robert the Bruce & the last 1 is Mary doll! Brilliantly narrated everything explained very well. Maybe I’m being bias cos I’m Scottish & so is he but I found it really interesting. Really rate this one too, I was fascinated from start to finish! Slainte🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✌🏻

Honestly, I think she just made bad choices. Had she not married, or at least not married Darnley. If she would have been more focused on ruling her own kingdom vs. trying to take Elizabeth’s. Perhaps even making an alliance instead of an enemy. She would have done better.

    • @lyndsaycrawford

I totally agree. Mary doll definitely followed her heart & it lead to Darnley which is a shame he was such a scheming bastard but she did outwit him, her arsehole half brother, Moray & most of the clan chiefs (especially earl of Douglas) when they tried to overthrow her & killed Rizzio in front of her when she was heavily pregnant hoping to make her miscarriage but unfortunately Darnley’s murder did not bode well for her. If I could recommend any documentary on MQS it would be Neil Oliver clan war fare. Not just Mary’s Catholicism but the “nobles” at Mary’s court were only noble in title, they were clan chiefs at their core & even more ruthless than the nobles in Elizabeth’s court. Mary must’ve been formidable. Unfortunately Mary did not learn from her mistakes where Darnley was concerned & personally I believe the “nobles” were just happy to get the infant prince into their clutches & rule as regents on behalf of a future “king” & I think Elizabeth was quite stupid not to see that, seen as she herself was a Queen in a man’s world. Elizabeth 1's final contribution to England was to deliver Scotland's Monarchy to be under the power of England's developing Parliamentary authority. She succeeded in that by overthrowing Mary 1 of Scotland, incarceration her for 19 years, separating her from her son, the sole surviving Tudor male heir, then botching her execution, a favorite pastime of that sadistic Tudor gangster mob.
Scotland now had no independent of England Monarchy, their Parliament was next, before that a few massacres to keep them loyal, like the McDonald's of Glencoe. And they've looted Scotland ever since on the pretence we're a union of equals. They have 60 million voters to our 5.5 million. Elizabeth 1 got her fathers desire, England absorbed Scotland by treachery.

She didn't marry on purpose, not only to keep her power as Queen but also she knew she had a secure heir in James. What Elizabeth didn't appreciate was Mary trying to usurp her throne to restore England and Scotland to Catholism

The Staffordshire Hoard included a piece of metal inscribed with a message I think was meant for Queen Mary who was imprisoned at Staffordshire. It was inscribed with numbers 10:35, saying "Arise O Lord and let thine enemies be scattered and them that hate thee flee before thee." Since a large treasure possibly including the hoard had been stolen from a library in France where it had been disdainfully kept since it had been an undervalued present to the king of France, I am thinking a supporter of Mary in France tried to deliver this valuable treasure to Queen Mary and had either failed or come to misfortune after burying it for safekeeping while he waited opportunity to give it to the Queen who sometimes got away from her captors in the Staffordshire area and was brought back.
When I first heard of the Staffordshire Hoard I wondered if it had any connection to Mary Queen of Scots, without knowing why. This video says clearly she was held captive in Saffordshire so that makes the connection for me. She had many friends in France who could have sent this treasure to her, which may have included weapons before it was buried.

Though she wanted the English throne as she believed she was the rightful queen, she would not succeed. Even the Roman Catholic Church called her the rightful queen of England and Elizabeth the "heretic queen". I am amazed that Mary didn't focus on her own kingdom. in the end, she got the last laugh on Elizabeth. Her son, James VI became Elizabeth's successor.

And obviously James took the throne, he was next in line and wasn't a Catholic, like his mother who was unable to raise him, and never tried to save her either. That wasn't a last laugh considering he was appointed by Elizabeth herself. Had he stepped in and saved his mother then sure, she would have had the last laugh but unfortunately, she waited for over 25yrs for him to save her for nothing because he saw her as a threat to his reign, especially since she was a Catholic.

    • @kathrynjordan8782

@@smithamy1982 Through my maternal Great Grandfather Stuart. James was RAISED Protestant since his mother was FORCED to abdicate her throne when she married her 3rd husband the Earl of Bothwell. She was not a threat to his reign. There was nothing he could do to save her. It was the Scottish nobility that sent her running to England in the first place. The Scottish nobility was not going to allow Mary to regain her throne as they did not want to be put under the guise of Rome again. They went through a Protestant Reformation. What I probably should say is that it was Margaret Tudor, the wife of James IV and sister of Henry VIII, got the last laugh. Henry VIII had said that NO heir of his sister Margaret would sit on the English throne. He never thought that ALL THREE OF HIS CHILDREN would not have children (his heir didn't live long enough to marry and have children). You seem to have lots of problems with people's family tree. I suspect that Mary was (as described by one historian) a spoiled princess. She was raised in the fairyland of the French court. Cossetted and beloved, she grew up believing that she was a privileged being whose will could not be questioned. Moving to Scotland must have been a real shock...the Scots were not fawning diplomats and courtiers, they were fierce, battlehardened brutes. She took the throne during the most complicated period in European history; while religious wars were being fought everywhere. I doubt that she was prepared to understand the complexity of every decision. Meanwhile, in England, prepared since infancy to fight and prevaricate, Elizabeth ruled carefully and consulted endlessly....

Mary was unfortunately a poor judge of character, and since leaving France after the death of her husband her life appeared to be a series of one bad decision after another. Granted her devout follower of Catholicism created some problems for her, but selecting the weak Darnley as her 2nd husband was demonstrably a poor decision. Relying on Bothwell to get his support and then marrying him was another poor decision. After that, I'm not too sure she could have done anything to turn her life around and regain her position as monarch. Men would be most unforgiving of a female ruler who had flouted any moral or cultural laws, a truism of the times that Elizabeth understood, but Mary unfortunately did not.

I think it's a false dichotomy to view Mary as either Machiavellian schemer or clueless innocent. Mary was indisputably a player in the Game of Thrones, and I suspect that if Elizabeth had granted Mary's desire to be named Elizabeth's heir, Mary would have immediately used this concession to claim the English throne on the grounds that Elizabeth was illegitimate, making Mary the rightful queen. I feel sure this possibility occurred to Elizabeth as well, and was why she refused to grant Mary this concession.
But I also believe that the Scottish lairds were behind Darnley's murder, and pinned it on Mary. This way they could continue to effectively rule Scotland in the name of an infant monarch, which they much preferred to having an adult queen in charge. It should also be mentioned that on Mary's twenty-fifth birthday she'd come into her full majority, and the lairds would have to return income-bearing lands they'd been "administrating" for her during her minority, which was another motive to depose her before that date. After all, Mary had already produced a new heir, making her expendable in their eyes. Elizabeth would have never made such a mistake if she'd been in Mary's position.
TL; DR-- Mary was a kinder, gentler Cersei Lannister, who wasn't as smart as she thought she was, and tended to underestimate people around her. Elizabeth was a more cautious and streetwise Margaery Tyrell. 😉

I love Mary Queen of Scots and I think she was treated badly and taken advantage of.

    On the Radio4 show _Quote Unquote_ there was a great quotation once from a schoolchild's history essay;
"Elizabeth I could have no peace, with Mary Queen of Scots constantly hoovering in the background"
    🙂

History likes to write Elizabeth as the protagonist and Mary as the antagonist. The truth is, Elizabeth was brought up in a court that killed for sport and Mary was an easy target because of her naivity. “The wicked may prosper in this world, but they will burn in hell in the next”

I think her ancestor Queen Consort Euphemia de Ross was cooler, but maybe that is because she was the Daughter of my Ancestor the War Master of Scotland, the Chief of the Great Clan Ross, the 4th Earl of Ross, Hugh Ross, husband to Robert the Bruce's sister.

I'm a direct decent from Mary! I agree with you about her heart. I can't imagine what it would be like to try to rule a kingdom and your heart at the same time.

      Right?
Our family is direct as well on my mother's mother's side. We have also had clairvoyance and healing in that lineage for as many generations as I am aware of. I have little doubt that she did too, and so her pain within the betrayals she experienced would have been deeply wounding as well.
Thanks for sharing your history and thoughts. Blessings!

Wow, good job on the effort that you put into making these documentaries. Your documentaries are like 40 minutes to 7 hours long with a lot of information and you make new videos every week. You put a lot of effort into researching and making these videos, and you might have people to help you make these videos and I bet you made some mistakes and had to start again. I wonder if you can make a documentary on the house of Stuart.
