Getting hit knocks you closer to him without shifting the screen. It is a minor time save, if I remember right. There is at least one variation you can go for that is about as fast, but there is a lot more room to mess it up.
Hey, the fast kunai throws happen by canceling a jump with a kunai throw and then canceling that kunai throw with a jump - repeating that over and over. I do it on a Genesis controller by turning my thumb sideways and mashing on both the B and C buttons. Other runners do it by sliding their thumb from one button to the other.

How did you run through some of the ememies on the first stage without taking damage?
When you break open a box that has a time bomb in it, enemy collision is ignored while the bomb is counting down. Another good example is at 6:32.
