Well, you can't sing that high and strong using falsetto. It's some kind of distorted head voice.

The 90s had SG, AIC, PJ, and somehow Nirvana, total zeros in comparison to the aforementioned, stole the spotlight while these other three were pushed to the side.

Chris Cornell was a force that changed the landscape of hard rock music then and will continue to do so, forever. His lyrics, his stage presence, his aura, his underrated guitar skills and most of all, his GIGANTIC voice, are characteristics that are rarely found in once person. To say that the world suffered a tremendous loss on May 18, 2017 is a serious understatement. Talent like Chris Cornell's cannot be replaced. People that understand the depth of his talents suffer the most.

YES, he did say "Jesus is my friend." He would sing that phrase from time to time in his live shows. Just based on the culmination of listening to his lyrics over the years, I think Chris had a sort of love/hate relationship with religion, as do many others. In the song, YOUR SAVIOR, from the Temple of The Dog tribute album tells of his disdain for all those fake Christians out there who wanted to judge and prophetize over him.
    RIP Chris Cornell.❤
But his voice, at the time, was totally amazing. He did strain his vocal chords a few times, and as he got older he lost a few octaves, but that's okay, his voice was still amazing until the end.

jam1870utube "Jesus is my friend" is actually a 60s song, he was interpolating. He wasn't just saying it to be ironic. But he was raised Irish Catholic and based on stories he tolf from his childhood it wasn't pretty.

Daniel Antunovic can you explain to me what you mean by this comment? I know what falsetto and timbre both mean. Maybe I'm having an airhead moment lol No sarcasm, just can't put it together what your point is. Thank you!

    • @danielantunovic1884
      @danielantunovic1884 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

didnt think this comment would get so many likes so sorry for the late reply.
What I mean is that usually falsetto has a very penetrating sort of quality and can make notes sound higher than what they actually are. If you know what falsetto is then you know for example what Matt Belamy of Muse uses on high notes is falsetto and he can get the wickedest sound that scorches the ear (especially with that almost forced falsetto he does towards the end of climax notes).
Now to think that Chris could hit those same damn G5 notes that Matt does with his head voice and produce the same scorching sound (same timbre) is amazing, because usually head voice does not carry the same sharp timbre as falsetto.
Through practice you can make the headvoice sound as sharp as a falsetto and make the vibrato as easy-flowing as well (falsetto makes vibrato much easier!). The added benefit is that the high notes hit with head voice also carry more power then the falsetto voice.
This is what I meant and obviously Chris mastered the high notes in head voice and im sure a Chris Cornell cover of lets say supremacy would have been wicked! But it goes to show how staggeringly hard it is to emulate the falsetto sharpness with head voice is because even the young Chris in this video didnt appear to have that relaxed falsetto in those D5-F5 notes when singing in headvoice however I dont know if that was a stylistic decision plus the sheer power produced by his headvoice makes up for this.
I can hit the F5 in headvoice but not nearly as sharply as Chris. Rip the vocal genius of our time.

ive watched most of your reactions now and love them. its great seeing someone discover and truly appreciate some of the music a lot of us 90s kids grew up with(!), and, ok im going make a suggestion: Jeff Buckley - Grace. he was actually friends with Chris Cornell, who wrote a song or two about him after Jeff died. most people only know him from his cover of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, which is ubiquitous at this point, but thats not who this guy was AT ALL-i think most people hear that song and think thats what you can expect from him-NOT TRUE. though hes steadily gaining fame (years after his passing) he might be the most criminally unappreciated musician of the 90s. the guy was just absurdly talented, and his style was so eclectic that its really hard to pin it down. he dabbled in everything from blues to classic rock to grunge. pls give this one a shot. (if you want a live version, the one from his mystery white boy tour is probably the strongest, but the bbc and npr versions are also solid.)

Yes, he was saying "Jesus is my friend". Alot of people, usually those who really arent fans but hear a song or two on the radio, sometimes mistake some of their songs for blasphemy, so Cornell wants to outright state that thats not the case.
In fact, the song is about a waging war in the 1800s in which a young man (young as an 12 or 13) is drafted and forced into battle.

@@thankyou2532 Cornell was singing "Jesus is my friend" as a coda from the previous song in that live set - "I Awake". It just segued into "Beyond the Wheel". He would often add little vocal ad-libs here and there. In fact, eerily, at the very end of Soundgarden's set-closer from the night he died, he ad-libed with Led Zeppelin's "In my time of dying".

It's really clear in this song how much that early nineties Seattle sound owes to early seventies hard rock/heavy metal. Even his voice sounds like it's straight out of the early-mid seventies. Cool.

Chris was not deeply spiritual in the sense that he believed in god or an afterlife. When he sang Jesus is my friend in the intro, it was borrowed from an old gospel song called Jesus Is Just Alright.

I knew Chris, honey. I can tell you're not old enough to have been listening to this stuff back in the day, but I'm glad you're getting into it now. Chris used what's called a "forced falsetto" to hit those high notes. It's an INCREDIBLY hard thing to do, and it takes a lot of practice to perfect it like he did. And for the record, it's also HORRIBLE on your vocal chords. But, DAMN, don't it sound fucking AWESOME!!! Peace! :)
