How To Sing Like Chris Cornell: • How to Start to Sing L...
Chris Cornell is one of the greatest singers of all time. His studio performances are flawless and meticulously recorded, and his energy live is something to behold. When digging into his live material, there are a lot of takeaways for us aspiring aggressive Rock vocalists: Join me as I break down two different performances of one of Soundgarden's most vocally terrifying songs (as far as vocal range) I react to and comment on a version performed in the early 90s and the same song performed in 2012 when they reunited and put into practice some of the aspects of Cornell's voice in my own so that you can get a start on seeing how the great Chris Cornell does what he does!

It really isn't fair, it isn't fair to everyone that loved him, but he did this injustice to himself and everyone round him. Reasons for this are a whole nother topic again, but you gotta see that he did it.

I only got to see him live once. That time was basically by accident. Was doing the louder than love Tore. At that point, I really didn’t even know anything about them. I regret that I never got to see them live for bad motor, finger, super unknown, or anything else, but, that one time blew me away. It was like being hit by a primal force - just blindsided.

It really is amazing just how different his approach became over the years. In 1990, he had youthful endurance in addition to his own natural talent, but nowhere near the amount of control that he developed even immediately post-Badmotorfinger.
By 2012, he'd changed the route he took to hit the high notes -- and in so doing, he not only hit them more reliably, but made feats that most singers can't perform (and those who can generally have to put their whole body into it) look effortless.
Cornell sang rock music smarter than anyone I can think of.

Beyond the Wheel has always been my favorite song, from the day Ultramega was released. I used to harass Chris to sing it at every club show, lol. He'd be like, 'Angela, are you TRYING to destroy my voice?!' haha. When he hit that "Mother, who's your man..." I would (and still do) just lose my shit. I LIVED for that song, especially live when I could just let go.

True story: I was backstage at that show at the Paramount, and while they played it, Demri was getting high in the bathroom. Myself? I cried like a baby. Layne's soul was layed bare for that song and the love of his life/muse wasn't even fucking watching. Ugh.

Check the link.I' be left at the top of page ,Chris's vocals & Kim's guitar are off the scale.Ben holds his base virtually to his knees so very reminiscent of The Sex Pistols & punk bands of my youth I loved growing up in Liverpool UK .The music scene back then in Liverpool was almost ' twinned' with Seattle ,some of Kurt Cousin's favourite bands were my friends bands in my teenage years.Saw the last interviews he did only a few weeks ago and couldn't believe my ears :)
Yeah AIC and Soundgarden are my favorite bands along with Deftones. Early Soundgarden is incredible like this and stuff like Jesus Christ Pose, Gun, and I Awake.
He was very drunk in Germany... if I remember correctly, Andrew Wood had passed and he was pissed and heart broken.
This is the only analysis among bunch of them on TH-cam which shows complete greatness of Chris's incredible voice. All credits to you man and your fabulous voice too.
I clearly remember watching the "comeback" on Letterman.... I was screaming. SCREAMING! God, I was so damn excited. Beyond the Wheel was always top tier for me. I got to see the boys again in 2014 with NIN, and they did BtW as the encore. F'ing AMAZING. I still feel the loss of Chris so deep in my soul. He was my soundtrack since middle school. I got made fun of a lot by my friends because he and Prince were literally the only musicians I listened to. They knew I was coming down the road because they'd hear my stereo and who was blasting out of it 😂 The 90's were AWESOME. 🦋
For me, the older version was even better than the younger version. As you've said, seem to be more relaxed and natural, mostly on the screaming parts. The thing i love about Chris when he was older was he still put the effort in for us! Unlike, mmm, let me think, oh yeah, Jon bon jovi! Ballad versions of their hits and guitarist singing high parts, or ofcourse, getting the crowd to do it!

Chris was even better as he grew into his deliverance of song. He could comfortably hold a note long sing as high.he had no regrets in his art
The 1990 performance is not even his best. From 1992-94 Cornell managed to really round out the upper notes and it almost did not sound like pure head voice. The 1993 Sturgis performance is the definitive live performance of Beyond the Wheel.
I find myself stuck in that head voice phase right now, but I am not sure how I can change that.
For real.. 1994 he was godly. Check out the Japan - Club Citta bootleg, best Beyond The Wheel performance to me.

You nailed it when you remarked about that sense you get as you watch him in later years, thinking, can he pull it off?? Then having your mind blown as he pulls it off flawlessly. It’s the same feeling I got the last time I saw Terry Bradshaw throw one deep in his final playing days. Or when people wonder if Tom Brady can put one on the button 40+ yards downfield, and they still pull it off. Thanks so much for helping people to further appreciate all he did, while unlocking the gift he left us in his body of work. I'm glad you did this song. This is my go to song when I try to explain to anyone the vocal range of Chris Cornell. When I listened to this song for the first time in 1991 was like when I listened to Eruption by EVH for the first time in 80s. My jaw hit the floor.
I saw them at a Seattle venue in 89' and this song made the hair stand up on my neck...it was an amazing vocal performance

As we watch you talk about Chris's music and his voice...its so cool because we watch and listen to music videos and get so wowed by Chris's talent and sit there looking at each other with eyes big and mouth open...the music from him, Kurt, and AIC and other 90's musicians (actually it started with Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath) have opened our eyes and we are so happy to connect to the music in the most beautiful magical way. Excellent analysis. Interesting to note how all of the clean notes when he is younger are on closed vowels, since singing with grit through a smaller passage is more difficult and risky in a live performance unless you're placing it really forward. Glad I found this channel!
I’m gobsmacked. He’s a generational talent. Singers like this only come along every 50 years or so.
A lot of magic goes into knowing how to push from your diaphragm, relax your throat, control the shape of your mouth cavity, etc. I had to go to college studying classical trumpet to do that. I've always had a ton of respect for people with natural talent who just do it. You can play or sing every right note exactly and we know that doesn't mean anything, there's more to it than that. Even when I thought I knew that, it took me longer to understand. That's the difference between someone like me and someone like Chris Cornell or anyone else we all love that had true gifts.

Ultramega OK came out Halloween 1988 on Southern California's SST Records (Black Flag's label). It was Soundgarden's first true full-length record, and second major release (Screaming Life EP, followed by FOPP came out in '87 on Sub Pop).
UMOK was remixed and remastered for rerelease in 2017 on Sub Pop.

The thing that most singers and vocal teachers get wrong is he’s singing with a lot more chest than head voice or falsetto that’s why his voice was so much thicker and masculine sounding then say The hair metal singers for example.

I heard that as he aged, he learned how to protect his voice by refining his belting technique.
Hey Chris, I would like to thank you for your videos because they're helping me a lot understanding how to use my voice properly. I always wondered what technique Cornell used for this type of songs, I've always been able to hit those notes in falsetto but of course it was not as powerful as him and I didn't understand what was the difference. Could you try to analize Medicine Man by Pantera, please? It's unbelievable to me how someone who can go so low with his voice can hit such high notes in a Rob Halford way. Also, I've heard once that Michael Starr (Steel Panther's singer) couldn't hit really high notes until Rob Halford himself showed him the proper technique and it all clicked

Ultramega OK, their debut full length record, wasn’t originally a Sub Pop release. It was their first, and only record for SST (Greg Ginn of Black Flag). Fast forward to 2018; the band acquired the master tapes, hired Jack Endino to do a proper remastered, and had Sub Pop release it. Also, the first video you reacted to was from 1990, not 91.

Not sure what you mean really are you talking live or studio, maybe you need to watch some soundgarden superunknown to actually see the vocal chain used, its a long line of analogue gear, even live, making records is an art and only adds value to an already great tone, the recording of the voice is an art I understand with 30 plus years exp. If you mean raw, records are not made like that or speakers would be popping all over town esp drums, the snare and human voice fight for weight in a mix too :) listen to superunknown on headphones and notice Chris and matts snare floating in a huge compressed centre field, the kepplinger snare made from a pipe that goes in the ground :) yum

One of the very best headphone albums too, and the vocal production as well as the singing continues to inspire me daily.... maybe hourly haha :) I love the saturation, the placements, the doubling, ...all of it. I love Staley, but the high notes and the power in Cornells voice... I dont think that Layne Staley could do that.

Is he not constantly in a mix of chest and head voice with some grit to it? Obviously he's got plenty of range through his chest, but all his highs are basically a full voiced falsetto. Are they not? Stitches seamlessly, adds a ton of grit, has the breath to control it as if it were a full chest voice.

This is the first time I ever heard someone break down his singing technique like this, and for the first time I realise he is, actually, playing by the same rules as all of us, and not some kind of super human freak! An incredible singer.

Great video Chris. I have to say: I'm the biggest Soundgarden fan. I have every one of their studio albums, including Telephantasm just for the track 'Black Rain', and the only Temple of The Dog album. That being said, I'll be the first to admit what I think is the obvious: Chris's voice wore out as the 90's moved on. You could already tell during some live performances during 1994 and 1995 when they were at their biggest with their release of 'Superunknown', and it was patently obvious for those with an ear for music in 1996 when 'Down On The Upside' came out. See Soundgarden's performance of 'Pretty Noose' on SNL 1996. He does a great job, but you can hear and somewhat see him struggle to match the sound he had on the record. After the reformation of the band, I was blown away to hear that Chris could once again hit some (not all) of his old high notes. I was so impressed that I didn't care that he struggled. You can hear him struggle, and you can hear that he can't put the grunt or "dying cat" in his voice at the high notes anymore night in and night out. He holds back and substitutes lower octaves or occasionally different notes in places to preserve his voice and avoid hurting himself. It seems like he "rehabbed" his voice to a point where he could functionally perform songs like 'Beyond The Wheel', 'Hands All Over' or 'Hunger Strike', which amazed me and excited me for the new record, since other great vocalists who could formerly reach higher notes had to lower the tunings of their songs to perform them live, or omit them completely because father time and years of on stage punishment caught up with them (Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin during their 'Celebration Day' concert in London in 2007) . I even saw Chris perform 'Jesus Christ Pose' in 2012, which you can find on TH-cam, and although he worked hard, that was an awful performance because he strained so hard and couldn't hit the notes. His vocal cords weren't what they were twenty years earlier after decades of night in and night out touring, recording and practicing.
He was capable of some great stuff back in the 80's and 90's, and I'd say its just short of a miracle that he was able to pull off what he did during Soundgarden's reformation. But I think it's important to point out what singing at the top of your vocal range can do to you night after night for years. Look at Mark Slaughter. Slaughter was a good band and the song 'Fly To The Angels' was great, partly because of the guitars, but also largely because of Mark's vocals. But what happened later after extensive performing? He blew his voice out, and even though he still performs today and outlived Chris Cornell (R.I.P. Chis, I really miss you being in the music world, and your family misses you too), Mark simply cannot, and should not do that song anymore. You can hear him compensate and struggle while performing it in the year 2000: /watch?v=et0CJSAfpuc. It's still a great performance, but you can hear where it's going. Recent live performances are un-listenable.
Anyway, great video. I think you could have found a better live performance of Soundgarden's 'Beyond The Wheel' during the 90's to use. The one you picked from his set in Germany was awful. The whole show the crowd was dead and didn't move or make any noise (because it's in Germany during the 1990's) and it was the very last song in their set, so Chris was tired, out of breath and had already worn his voice out. In the right light you can see his skin looks flushed or even purple at times while he's performing. Two of the last three songs in their set are the hardest ones on your vocal cords: 'I Awake' and 'Beyond The Wheel'. The only one harder than those that spring to mind immediately is 'Jesus Christ Pose'. A tape of 'Beyond The Wheel' used in a 1990 video package when they hired bassist Jason Everman was absolutely fantastic, and I'd love to see it in its entirety, but I've yet to find it. Watch the interview and you'll notice it at 2:29: /watch?v=orDDfZCPGmI It's unbelievably good.
I'd love to see a video tutorials from various vocal coaches out there about how to avoid killing the high end of your vocal range as you get older, or tips on how to hang onto it for as long as possible for any future Chris Cornells, Mark Slaughters or Robert Plants out there?
I saw u mention Jesus Christ pose...2017 had some of the best performances of that song ever...and mean ever...Cornell was actively trying to get his abilities to what they were in his younger days and honestly...Chris in his prime went of key a lot and hardly ever did later on...but from 2010 up he was getting better and better for the most part...I think it's a fort Myers performance in 2017 on TH-cam you can find a great shot version that he hits every single note in it and does amazing
Mike Patton has a career that begins in the late 80's with Mr. Bungle, up to today in front of an orchestra, before you get to Faith No More in the middle of it. He would fill several videos worth of lessons.

Si se fijan bien, vean como importa la voz al colocar la lengua en una posición fija detrás de los dientes, cosa q no hacia antes. Olvide de de esos agudos de la etapa superunknown....

honestly, beyond the wheel is the perfect one to start with, even though it's high, because its thin mix. It's way easier to sing that stuff like Burden In My Hand which is more of a chesty middle mix.

Yes! Watch Cornell live! He is HUMAN lol! He was still a monster, but people who expect a live performance to sound like an album just have impossible expectations. And in my limited vocal experience, if you're expecting to sound like an album when doing a live performance, you are setting yourself up for dissapointment.
I prefer him live an that can't be said about many people

Im still not comprehending how to get that "throaty" undertone (idk if anyone understands what im going for here but the "breaks" within his rasp are farther apart than fry itself which has a faster "rate" of break, like static). My grit always has that thin fry overtone. How do i get that sound? Not the tone. But that distortion itself?
I can hit it flawlessly in falsetto but as soon as i go from chest towards head, suddenly the familiarity i had with the feel doesnt apply anymore because its almost like that particular part that i was using isnt accessible in that positioning.
