    Thanks Mike! I do the same things for my chickens in this heat. I’m a first time chick mom so I go a bit overboard and give them cold watermelon, cukes, apples or figs, whatever I have on hand. They’re a bit spoiled 😁 The past 2 days here in the northwestern NC we’ve had 95 - 98* temps with heat index of 108. I’m so glad they’re calling for 66* on Saturday. I mean it is fall, right? 😁 My feathered girls won’t know what to think. Maybe I should knit them some sweaters 🤔😂😂😁😜

    Las Vegas, NV checking in. We rarely see humidity above 40% which is hard for us. So I feel for ya. Freeze gallon jugs of water overnight & put them in water, in pools, near nesting boxes, and any place you need it cooler. I lived in OH, KY, TN, MS, GA, so I get it. When I came here in 2008 we were looking for a house & I recall one night it was 112 at 10pm. Yikes! I got a Premiere1 because I have 2 dachshunds.

    You are correct the natural habitat for chickens is the forest line. When it is hot out like it has been here in N. Florida I will set a shallow container in the shade fill with water and my chickens will stand in it to cool off. I also occasionally throw my chickens some frozen fruit when it is really hot out. Frozen blueberries are their favorite with frozen banana next. It has been so hot that I had to start Fall seedlings over. I have been turning on the sprinkler and at least a dozen various birds will come and play in the sprinkler, cardinals, bluejays, etc.... The boy's are precious little helpers.

I have visited Louisiana the beginning of July and I know their humidity got even worse but at night I had to turn the windshield wipers on and it was like a downpour except there was no rain. Hey Mike, thank you for sharing you tips and tricks! I didn't know chickens couldn't taste the heat of peppers, thanks for teaching ;)
    Lucky for us it's not getting superhot in The Netherlands, we virtually never get above 35 degrees Celsius, and for sure not longer than a few days. But still, checking your animals often and adjust their living circumstances according to the weather, is the best we can do for them. We now have had a lot of rain, and it's doesn't seem to stop anytime soon the coming weeks, so we are right now trying to figure out how to give them more shelter for the rain. There is virtually no spot anymore, without the inside of their coop, that is dry. So we fiddle around with boards and sheets and plastic, but we need a more permanent solution. Ah well, we'll figure it out ;)
    Take care, blessings,
    Diana

    • @Freakontheway
      @Freakontheway 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's strange weather. Romans 8:22 came to mind: like the world is groaning as in the pains of childbirth.
      Ah well, we are given imagination and skills to be resourceful and creative, so you and we will find solutions. But it's hard work once in a while. Thank you for in the meantime sharing your skills (and answering comments)! We can help each other, even though we are on either side of the big pond ;)
      Blessings.

      It's been so bad. And I didn't mean for you to feel bad about not including us. It's just another day in the south. I lived in Houston for a decade. I'm handling it better than my husband and his children....it will soon...we will have acres and we will learn.
