I was so cranky at myself for that silly mistake but I’m glad I caught it before putting the video out! ❤🧂☀️🐔 Just to clarify, it’s four tablespoons of salt and four tablespoons of baking soda to make the mixture. Then, to make the liquid electrolytes, it’s two teaspoons of the mixture and one tablespoon of honey per gallon of water. ❤
@@breanas_mommy You could do it without the honey but you would want to be sure they are drinking it because it may not be as palatable to them. I would also offer them fresh water.
Dahlia I will order both of those products and make it. I ferment garlic cloves in honey and both eat the garlic and drink the honey off the spoon of garlic. Over time the honey gets thinner. I am considering using that honey because garlic is good for chickens. I am wondering if you think it would be okay to try it?
I think honey is generally considered antibacterial, but contains prebiotic oligosaccharides that help promote healthy gut flora. The good bacteria for chickens includes lactobacillius like in yogurt and bifidobacterium in fruits and vegetables. And raw honey has additional benefits of antioxidant polyphenols and bee pollen not in processed, but still bacteria can’t grow in honey, that’s why some people put it on cuts and it has an indefinite shelf life (honey found in pyramids).
Thx so much. I need this. My girls are in a run. They are covered by trees. But I still save all my old bananas and freeze them. They love them frozen. Cold cucumber chips in their water works. There is never any left overs
101 in south central Texas during the day so have been giving our chickens electrolytes we purchased. We may run out before it cools off so this homemade recipe would be great. Thank you so much for also sharing your recipe, of which I think one may be in your book too.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe so so much! I have been using this recipe from your book for my girls on hot days along with watermelon and frozen grape slices that the ducks love! ALSO so cool to see you partnered with redmond, LOVE their REAL salt! Thanks for sharing this amazing info!
This is timely information! I'm cooling off my birds with chilled spaghetti noodles and grapes. I've teased a number of bushes to grow into canopies to shade them. As the flock moves about the yard, I'll spray the next spot on their itinerary to cool it down for them. I've worked on the mulberry bush next to the porch steps for 3 years. First, I aimed to form a leafy arch to give the porch anoles a safe commute to the coop--now the twisted arch is 10 feet long and spreads out to shade the sun-blasted area beside the porch and the end of the bamboo garden spa with the big dustbath. These growing things are damned malleable!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia I started out by taking a set of long, thin, flexible branches and making them grow in a 4 -foot circle, so looking off the side porch there was a leafy hoop of leaves like a lush frame. It made me ealize there was a way to work with the new growth instead of having to trim the mulberry bush all the time. So, just for giggles, I started pulling the long new branches downward and twisting them together to make the arch for the anoles. Twisting it together kept everything together in one mass so I could redirect it toward the coop. As it got close, I wired it to the corner of the coop to make sure it got the idea. It then started spreading out over the garden, which I hadn't foreseen. It's a lot of fun. I've become a bush enchantress--well, in a different way than I was before. Hehheh.
Hey ladies, jumping in here, but do either of yall happen to know if chickens will eat rosemary bushes ? I was told that they wouldn't & think it would be a great plant to have in the large run since it'll stand up to Texas heat. If not, any other suggestions ?
@@aliciaspears7847 I'm just a bimbo, but I know my birds go gaga over Harvest Delight, which has thyme and oregano in it. Our learned President will know the score for sure--but from what I see online, an herb like rosemary is great for supporting liver function in chickens.
@Susie_Floozie I respectfully disagree. A bimbo would not have come up with a natural canopy for her flock, which sounds amazing BTW! Thanks for the reply & advice.
My shadow hen passed away this morning. Cheeya was her name, meaning shadow in hindi. She loved me, always fallowing me around and when i was out of sight, she would call for me. She loved cuddling with me and wanted nothing more than my love and attention. Im beyond devasted. I just hope she knew how much i love her.

Redmond’s gets electrolyte biz from the keto/fasting community, too, though I prefer Himalayan. Lots of ketovarians have gotten on the chook train, so we can conveniently make it for all of us together!
Perfect timing! I have a broody hen on a batch of eggs and its day 17. I'm getting a brooder ready just in case she's not a good mama, and I'll mix up some of this for her and any babies and the whole flock. Crossing my fingers. This is her first time and also mine incubating chicks. There may be some Prince Maximilian of Mayhem (Bubble Yum) babies soon!
I was so glad to find this video! We are in the middle of a brutal heat wave in Texas, and I'm doing everything I can to keep my girls cool and healthy. Thanks for the recipe, congrats on your new book (!), and I have to say - love the glasses frames. I have a sparkly pair myself, and I always get compliments. 🙂
I love making things from scratch if I can, thank you! Is it okay to use Himalayan pink salt? That’s what I have on hand at the moment, and it also has extra minerals in it. And I’m a beekeeper, so raw honey is my jam. Thanks! 😊🐓🐝
We also separate the lower pecking order broody hens for 5-10 days by then the chicks have their feet and are ready to keep clear of the big meany hens
I would offer it anytime a chicken is sick, when you have baby chicks, or if there's a heat wave happening. You could do it once a week if you liked but you also need to make sure they have fresh water.
Oh I am going to make that and I need to know how long can I store it? If I make some and put it in the refrigerator will last couple days or will it last in their container for a couple of days?
How much mixture and honey would you use in a 32-oz and a 2-gallon waterer? One waterer is for my chicks and the other for my hens, but I am unsure of the amount to use.
I just wanted to ask a question. One of my chickens ate non food grade diatomaceous earth but it was a pet approved dust DE powder, so what should I do?
So if there is a heatwave, how many times can I give this to my chickens or for how long? Like, is it once a week or for 3 days consequtively? I'm curious.
Daliah just now corrected this recipe. It is 2 tsp of salt and 2 tsp of baking soda NOT 2 Tabespoons. Then add the 1 tablespoon of honey. Thank you Daliah for catching that so quickly. Making it now cuz I'm in the Texas heat.
Yes, two teaspoons of the baking soda/sea salt mixture not two tablespoons! It won’t harm your chickens if you accidentally do tablespoons with good quality salt like real salt but it’s not the right dosage. I was so mad at myself for making that mistake but I was I. A hurry to make some videos before I had to leave town! 😱😳

This is slightly off topic, I have 6 Hy-line browns. After noticing that they had what appeared to be fluffy white feathers on their chests, that weren't there before, I looked at all of them and they are missing their breast feathers, in different degrees per bird. I saw Gloria plucking, so I tried moving her to the outside of the pen for a week. Put her back in and she started back with in a hour. So I rehomed her. (Much nicer) Now I see the others doing it to each other. What to do????? I have purchased some no peck spay, I'll give it a try. Any thoughts???? They have enough room, pecking block toy, balanced diet, dust bath.
It’s getting close to molting season. Have you witnessed them actually pulling out feathers? It really does sound like your chickens are going through a molt.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia yes, I have seen them pulling their friends feathers. An older man told me he thought since they saw Gloria doing it, it is a learned behavior. Their first birthday was Easter this year. I have your book by the way, nice job! 🥰 They are bare chested.
