MXR Joshua Is a multi-tap ambient delay pedal with classic Eighties style processing. Designed to instantly create the sounds of a 1980’s rack with zero effort and in a package smaller than a deck of cards. Easily dial up ethereal tones of David Gilmour, U2 the Edge, Andy Summers (and many others). It’s a Tonal recipe that is delivered in Chef’s choice style. Umami tone… the reverb is always on and changes decay when you change the delay time.
Dude, you are a fucking great rhythm-lead player. It's a travesty that you aren't in a guitar,-bass,-drums,-singer thing, playing arenas. You have a great sense of how to keep the rhythm parts going while still keeping good phrasing on the leads. That's what I try to do as well. I picked it up from one of my top two favorite guitarists, The Edge. That is one of those musician-skills that never gets the credit. And that snare sound is really nice.
That was my favourite episode you've ever done. It took me back to sounds that are so prominent in my memory as a teenager it was pretty emotional. Never underestimate the power of music 💥
ATTENTION! You do NOT have to sacrifice a stereo jack for tap on the Flashback 2. There's a software update that allows you to hold down the footswitch and use it for tap - you sacrifice the mash function but I think it's worth it.
On the topic of why anyone would want their delay trails off, Kings of Leon has a song called Find Me where the instrumental section uses a delay that’s pretty much constantly ramping up, only to be cut off really immediately in a hard stop that allows the guitar player to go back into the main riff without the delay trails bleeding into it. I’d imagine it’s moments like that in songs that make turning trails off a helpful option for some!
I have an original Korg rack SDD 3000. The magic of Edge’s biting tone of that era is in the preamp in the front of that rack unit into a Vox AC30 The preamp stays in the signal regardless if the delay is on. I had the unit serviced by the guy who services the Edge’s Korgs about 15 years ago. He told me If you want that tone, you can get an SDD 2000 for a fraction of the cost. They have the same preamp. His picks also contribute to the raspiness.
I recently bought the Korg pedal. I don't know if it's 100% like the rack unit BUT, the preamp is something magic. I don't use a Vox, i have a tweed bassman, but it definitly gives a special character to the sound
@@JimWitschey Caught a YT video about the cost of upgrading hifi/audiophile gear. Ultimately, the best bang for the buck recommendation was...a fat'un.
Thanks for this. After more than 25 years playing guitar I finally built a stereo board (around my TC Flashback Triple Delay) and love that 2290 goodness. It's never too late to abandon old prejudices and expand sonic horizons!
Nice! I found a Flashback 1 in my dad's guitar case. Never knew why he had it. Now I realize he was playing U2 covers in his band, The Liathróidí(Gaelic for The Balls).
I was just telling buddies today that I want a Joshua "Every ambient guitar TH-camr who covered this was slightly excited when they described it, which is basically the ambient guitarist version of shouting in joy"
Very nice! Joshua coming in with the one poem per live stream is the perfect measure. Adds something to that one jam without us not expansively hearing the sounds. Great show guys, thanks.
Thank you for such a fun episode! My early 80s lessons in delay came via EVH’s “Cathedral”. It’s the first tune I play for friends who “aren’t into effects”.
18:48 that was one of THE best jams I’ve seen you do. At first I thought, oh we’re going into Post Rock Territory but then came the badass fuzz thing out of left field. Wow.
I love the TC nova delay. It looks like my childhood alarm clock and also the delorian Time Machine from back to the future. Is it dated? Yes. Is it beautiful? Also yes.
This comes at a great time I have been shopping for a U2 type delay(early U2 was the soundtrack of my early twenties) I saw them at the Cow Palace during the Unforgettable Fire Tour. I was recently thinking about paying silly money to buy the pedal version of the Korg SDD3000. This will save me a few dollars and probably a little more practical. Loved this episode!
Hey JHS you guys are great I have learned so much about pedals and where they come from and how to use them and different ways to hook them up God Bless you all for your hard work in producing these videos and Nick you are just a genius of production and sound mixing and making those stingers. I miss Addison but I hope he is doing well and having fun. I am not really an accomplished guitarist or musician but I do have a small studio set up in my back yard in a small 10x12 storage shed. and I love making noises with all my pedals and keyboards and guitars and basses. It is my only vice now that I am an old man of 73 and have quit all my other vices like smoking dope and drinking and smoking cigarettes and experimenting with drugs and alternate lifestyles. Yes I have tired a little bit of everything and have finally come to the conclusion that GOD was right all along nothing in this world satisfies like JESUS! Love you guys keep the vidz coming we all love to see an hear your take on new and old products and the history is fascinating too!
The Flashback 2 pedal does have tap tempo. He mentioned it did not in this vid as a negative. There was a firmware update for it about 4 years ago that added it and most revs out there have it already. In the usb editor app you select either mash or tap function. You will lose the mash function, but I always leave mine set to tap. Just hold down button until light turns green, then tap in your tempo.
For its size, sound and features, that Joshua pedal is all ya need. If I had that when I was young I’d have been the next u2, which is to say Coldplay lol. I remember hearing Parachutes album and those were the first words on my lips - they’re the next u2. Next album confirmed it. Still nostalgic about Parachutes. Tasty tones, right in the very first song on the album.
Love your JHS show and all the pedals you demo....however...being an old retired guy I can not afford most of the pedals you all demo. I just stick with the cheap Chinese Knock Off's they sound pretty good and for my money and skill they work just fine...thanks for all you do.🎸🎸🎸keep on jamming and rocking out !!!
The TC Flashback Mini has “Strum Tempo.” Hold down the footswitch and strum (or pluck) your tempo. I’ll keep it on my (bass) board for that reason alone.
Nova delay owner here. It replaced the cheaper nova repeater I had previously. Other than buying the new 2290 pedal I can't see it being replaced on my board.
I have the Flashback. Nothing against the other TC or the Strymon, but I don’t need to another $100 and can’t afford the Strymon. The Joshua is very compelling except that it doesn’t have stereo in. I presently have a stereo “mods/effect loop” pedalboard with the following: Fulltone Supra-Trem2; Neo Instruments Ventilator2 with remote*; TC Corona Chorus (would use a Boss Chorus if they had one with stereo in); Boss DC-2W; TC Flashback; TC Hall Of Fame; Boss EQ-200. All pedals are stereo I/O and I sometimes use multiple pedals simultaneously. *If you don’t have or haven’t tried the Ventilator 2, with the remote for speed changing, you are missing out. This is probably the best thought-out pedal I’ve ever heard of. I’d like to see you do a demo of it. Thanks for all your great work!
Great vid, will look out for the MXR - should turn up here at some point (HK) - I still have fondness for MXRs - when the first Phase 90 and Distortion+ turned up they were great. Love playing with delays - back in the '70s I had a WEM Copycat & Roland Space Echo and loved them - 1/4 inch tape and a razor blade! I use the TCE Alter Ego (for 'analog warbles) and the Flashback Triple Delay and 1/4 note + dotted 8th is terrific! Would like to try the recent Boss / Roland (?) Space Echo Pedal with built in 'overload' recreating the original machine which I used to like pushing a bit. Fun, fun, fun!
I got the Nova Delay when it first was released and it has never left my board since, and it probably never will. It's so damn useful, plus it has 9 programmable presets. And I get to see the exact tempo and settings. It doesn't take 9 volts though.
The FB2 can do stereo tap. If you update the firmware, you have an option in the TC app to use the footswitch as the tap tempo by holding it down for a second and then tapping. Yes, it’s lame that it loses the external tap function when in stereo and you have to use an app to get around that, but it’s feasible.
This is the first demo of this pedal that showed how good it is. Every other demo made it look like a dud. No one else seemed to know what to do with it.
The Edge used a Bond Electraglide on this album . I bought one about a year ago for pretty cheap. Josh if you’re interested in playing it I’d gladly send it to you. To borrow. 😊
Had one for ages and it’s really a great delay. Only swapped it for a Boss DD-200 because of it having a Space Echo simulation in it which is just marvellous.
It's definetely great! I have the keeley halo, which does a lot of the same, so i peobably will just stick with that one. But if this was out at the same time, i would consider this one as well.
I have a few delays and I use delay a LOT (yeah, sorry, worship guitarist here 🙋) Wampler’s “The Doctor” has been my delay du jour for about the past 3 years.
My Source Audio Collider can achieve these effects in a few different ways. However, unlike everyone else who will use this to sound like U2, I’m going to be a bit more original and use it to sound like Coldplay. 😂 Seriously though, I have an old song written on an ‘80s Kramer hollow body electric guitar that was never recorded. Keen to pull it out of the cobwebs and try to tastefully apply that type of effect. It might be just what is needs (also might suck), but If nothing else this vid has inspired me to revive an old song. Thank you 🙏

Stereo In... Please!!!

Is it stereo in?
What about analog dry through?

To be honest I like having the external tap
On the topic of why anyone would want their delay trails

Next stage of Josh's evolution is wet-dry-wet with modulation being wet and in stereo and drive being dry. The wet amps also see drive.
