Should of won an Oscar. This performance was so brilliant and unique. Jackie was able to combine a funny goof sheriff , but a sheriff that was actually a good competent smart police officer nonetheless. It makes his character so believable and likable. I think people overlook this aspect of sheriff Buford T Justice. There is no one that could duplicate this performance.

And when he hangs up, the one wise guy says "You're not gonna believe this. He killed 16 Checkoslavakians. The guy was an Interior Decorator!" the other guy says "His house looked like shit......"

I have this on Bluray Disc and it's like being back in the theater every time I watch it. Jackie Gleason's performance is the benchmark for comedic perfection!
I think my favourite Gleason scene is in the diner, especially when he has his mouth full and Reynolds asks him if the guy he's chasing is a bank robber--classic Gleason adlibbing!
My Dad took us to see this movie at the drive in.He was and had been a professional Truck Driver and still was.And I rode With him for many years when not in school.

I'm 55 years old and still laugh my ass off everytime I watch this movie! I even to this day in 2019 use all of the quotes from this movie! My Dad took us to see this movie at the drive in.He was and had been a professional Truck Driver and still was.And I rode With him for many years when not in school.
