@@Matt-qv8zj holy shit I haven’t either but I clicked on this video…. I think this might totally be subconsciously why I haven’t been interested in watching lately!
Hey Hoovie fans, previous owner and seller of this ML63. I bought the ML63 early 2021 from an owner that seemed to have taken good care of it and did a lot of service and maintenance at the local MB dealership. I bought it and drove it 1,300 miles back home which was the initial “test drive” for this vehicle, and it made it with no issues. After approximately 1 year and 5000 miles of great ownership I woke up to a dead car, after replacing the battery it started and ran again, but it was drained by the next day. After watching Hoovie for the past two years I knew just the place where the ML63 would get the attention it deserves. AMG has done a lot of great things, but the 6.3(6.2)L V8’s in my opinion are the most iconic. Hope you guys enjoyed a little backstory to the car and I really enjoyed watching this video.
08' ML63 owner. Have Wizard check intake cams and old vs new headbolts. You know the m156 engine issue and part of that I think is that you have a very race car engine design from AMG, not the normal Mercedes design. I would also think that a m156 in a ML63 would have not been thrashed on as much as one in a c63. The valve train needs oil if it has been sitting, so I always let my 08' drop from fast idle at start up before driving. Usually takes like 30 seconds. The hatch needs to be run with its lift motor several cycles to reset limit switches. Other things to look out for on the w164 family is the rear SAM module sits behind the right rear turn signal area and the seals could leak and get water into the area of the SAM. Water damage or corrosion issues could then happen. As for interior trim level, they were much closer to the E Class of the day.
On the x164 platform (the GL series, which is the same platform, just longer, think Tahoe to Suburban) rear SAM water damage may also be from clogged sun roof/moon roof drains. I'm dealing with this right now and I have no idea to clean/unclog those drains!
I worked as a tech at a Mercedes’ dealer from 2008 to 2010 (Beverly hills) and we had a ton of these 63 motors come in with intake manifold gaskets and occasionally cam shaft solenoids. Both were pretty straight forward replacements. Still to this day the 63 motor is my favorite naturally aspirated V8.
Well, I would think the rear hatch thinking it’s open and the interior lights on all the time would definitely be a good start for the battery drain. Very nice combo and options, hopefully this one turns out good. Seems good so far!
a friend of mine had a car like that he got cheap because it was no longer brand new (problems) and the previous owner got tired of it....it had every bell and whistle you could imagine.....so many modules, and those shock absorbers probly cost 5 grand a piece. hence why with 175k its worthless....some sucker paid 100k brand new.....

@@ic1815 the back ones are even cheaper. And the module itself rarely dies, unless it's drenched in water due to blocked drains. On those MLs the rear Sam sits low behind the rear fenders and the taillight seals leak after ten years. Drowns the module and depending how bad it gets will kill it. But you only need a 75$ autel Ap200 to read codes and live values in each and every module, so diy diagnostics is not too hard.
Thanks for giving her a good home Hoovie. I'm glad you will keep her on the road. My daughter left a Frozen dvd in the player for your daughter. It was great dealing with you and finally getting to meet you although not in person, - Dave

Ikr, it made a good video, but what a Piece of Rust! The darn gas cap flew off on him. That Baja is probably gonna be scrapped or hopefully used as a parts car in junk yard.
2014 C63 owner here - This high pitched noise you are hearing is most likely a bad PCV valve, which is fairly common on these. Not too difficult to replace, however it is necessary to have the intake manifold removed, otherwise the job becomes a major pain, due to a lack of space. Other things to check on these are; Headbolts - Should they be the older "female" star patter, these should be changed to the upgraded "Male" Torx bolts. These were updated by Mercedes in 2011 -> Camshafts and Valve buckets - Camshafts wear prematurely on ALL M156's due to incompatible material hardness in the cams and the valve buckets. Ineffective oil distribution to the higher sitting intake cams is also a contributing factor to this issue. This is also why intake cams are usually first to go bad. Worn cams will begin to eat away and cause pitting in the valve buckets. This will usually present itself as a loud ticking, which will gradually get worse as they wear out even more. Camshaft adjusters - These are another pitfall of the M156 and affects all engines. The locking plates are the issue, they wear out prematurely due to low quality / too soft metal used in manufacturing them. This issue is identifiable as a metallic rattle during cold starts. There's a simple solution to the issue - aftermarket locking plates which have been machined out of a much stronger alloy. 63motorsports makes these. Changing the entire camshaft adjuster assembly is a waste of money, but that is what mercedes will do if you take it to a dealer. Intake manifold - These are known to corrode and eventually crack with time. Also an expensive fix, as the intake manifold is made of magnesium which is difficult to weld and often a new assembly is needed. Injectors should be replaced at ~ 100k kilometres or 60k miles. Engine oil should be 5W-40 or 10W-60 in hotter climates. The MB recommended 0W-40 is too thin and will accelerate wear in the cams. Engine oil should be changed every ~7k kilometres or ~4k miles. Ended up writing an entire essay about this engine here, but hope this helps anyone looking into buying a 63 with the M156. - 63 AMG masochist
This is why I TH-cam. I don't own this engine, but you probably saved a few people some massive headaches with these practical solutions to common problems. Kudos
Incorrect! Not all camshaft wear. Some early and most likely vehicles that have missed or had later oil changes, might possibly suffer with camshaft issues. Remember, this is a high performance engine, giving Racing car type performance, so needs regular servicing
@@bernardwarr4187 This is not true. In fact, the newer versions are more susceptible to premature wear due to stiffer valve springs which were taken from the M159. Pre-facelift C63's tend to run longer on their original cams than their facelifted counterparts. I've owned both and speak from personal experience. Also, please refer to videos of "Tasos Moschatos" on TH-cam. He's a tech genius who seems to know everything one could know about AMG Mercs. He goes through this issue on many videos.
Bought one last summer. After nine months of driving I can honestly say that it is the best all around car I've owned. No issues so far. Good for city driving, even better for highway. Most comfortable seats. The car was well maitained by the previous owner, though. With "Agility" mode on, acceleration is impressive!
A great buy indeed and love your work! Just to clarify for anyone interested, I had an airbag go bang while in the raised off-road setting and after lowering the car to ‘normal’ position I drove it home 150 miles or so almost as normal but with a little extra care. No need to be concerned about being stranded somewhere as such. These ML63’s are so much damned fun!
Check for water leaks in the “wells” behind the rear inspection hatches in the boot (trunk). Water can get in behind the rear light clusters and soak your electrics.

I bet (though obvs still could bewrong) the harness going into the trunk lid is broken near the hinge from hardened plastic insulation+constant movement and the wires are exposed and shorting on eachother. Seen that issue in a 5 series E61 touring and the symptoms were very similar. Trunk open warnings, battery drain, lock & light buttons randomly not working etc.
The rear hatch not working properly could be the actual switch mechanism getting "stuck" in the open or closed position. If you pull the switch to open, try pushing it back to the neutral position. This is what happened to our ML350 back in the day.
After owning one for 4 years I can tell you they are all in immaculate condition because they are either waiting for parts or being repaired. I would also immediately put split loom tubing over the engine wiring harness, the hood vents dump water straight onto the harness and ruin it over time.
I have that same car!!! mine not so much a hooptie haha 60k miles! Paid 10k for it and so far zero issues, also had to mention it is a 1 owner California car so no rust!! The hatch sign could be related to the rear Sam module and it's a common problem with the W164 platform. Water tends to leak into the area where the Sam unit sits. And don't slam the trunk! it has a soft close feature on it!

The air shocks themselves tend to announce failure by leaking down overnight. The bigger issue is pump failure, which leaves you with no suspension once the shocks have bled down.
Heads up: just take a voltmeter, put it into its microvolt range. Put the terminals of the voltmeter across each fuse. Ones which read 0 have no current flowing through them. Ones which show some small quantity of microvolts (or millivolts if the draw is high enough) have current flow. Much faster.
Finally an actual hoopty! I’m super happy I was getting real sick of super cars. Maybe it’s just jealousy because I’m a poor person. But I like seeing cars get saved from the parts yard.

So as someone who just tracked down a massive electrical issue on my w164 ML550, the rear SAM located in the passenger rear trunk compartment would be a great place to start. My issues were: key would not lock or unlock the car, no keyless go, interior lights would not turn on, no fuel gauge, auto trunk would not work, no blinkers, no wipers, no backup camera & srs fault. Everything was tied into the rear SAM. Swapped for a brand new dealer unit & everything came back to life. Also want to check for water ingress in the trunk on these. Tail lights, 3rd brake light & weather stripping over time tends to allow water in & cause these issues
It's as fun to see the rare and interesting things roll through as the complete dumpster fires. The ML63 is the second most interesting 63 of the era, only the R63 has more weird coolness to it. This one looks like a genuinely good and well kept car, too. I'm a bit envious, I'd have happily traded my E39 540i for this thing(it's perfectly sorted and looks very pretty but has almost a quarter million miles on it. Kind of a fun story behind this car.) I'm sure even I could sort out the issues on it for a reasonable cost. It's hard to see this as anything but a home run, well done!
M62s are great engines! The chain issue doesn’t exist if you use high quality oil. My M62 didn’t have that amount of miles, but it had 250000km (155k miles) when I sold it. Both me and the previous owner absolutely thrased on the car, but we both always made sure to change the engine oil every 10k km (6200~ miles) and always used Castrol Edge 5w-40 (not trash oil like Magnatec). Not a single rattle, and the guides looked brand new. However, it was sadly an auto, and with BMW’s stupid ”life time fluid” decision with the gearbox, the torque converter started to act up when I sold it..
@@jgripen969 This one's an auto, too, and seems original. Shifts good and when I serviced it, the fluid and filter was clearly due for a change but there wasn't any metal in it or anything, so it seems perfectly healthy! I don't get a sense this one was ever thrashed, the original driver's seat wasn't even torn(I replaced it anyway because the cushion had compressed a bit.) Torquey motors, they bite off the line real hard if you punch it. Chain guides look fine but get very brittle with age, they will always fail. Mine had failed and needed replacement, but they lasted about 230k before that happened. Handled the VANOS at the same time, it was starting to make a tugboat noise. Runs buttery smooth and quiet now, though. Trying to sell it, but I think the miles are scaring people away. Real shame, it's a really nice E39, black on tan, and a very clean car throughout. Not that I mind keeping it a little longer, I drive it on the weekends. I never buy the lifetime fluid claims, lifetime to a manufacturer means 100k miles. That's the most I let a car go without service, 55k if it's heavy or a performance car. 30k if it's a CVT.
@@Jack_S_ 230k and a bunch of years on a V8 that one ”uses” is definitely okey in my book. Thing is, people claim the chain only lasts a maximum of 120k~ miles, which is complete BS. Another thing you could do is change the thermostat. Stock thermostat opens at 105 celsius, and could easily get above that with a few degrees on a hot summer day. That bakes plastic components in the engine
@@jgripen969 I just did the job on a friend's car with 110k on the clock. Regular oil changes, bit of a creampuff of a car, really. The guides were almost entirely intact, but the plastic was very brittle, it cracked quickly and suddenly at a touch. I'm surprised so little of it had broken. The oil separator neck was falling apart, though, and the chain has to come off to replace that. Their failure is a guarantee, though things like regular oil changes do well to extend their life. I won't ever stray from factory spec, though. Too thin of oil can cause problems, too thick can cause different problems.
Exactly the videos we like. The older cars that draw us in and that a lot of your viewers could actually obtain. The reason many of us, including myself, started watching your videos. I believe the first video I watched was the Lexus ES that you drove a very far distance that you got for cheap and had bird poop caked on it. One of the videos with the higher end, couple hundred thousand dollar cars would not have piqued my interest enough to watch and they still don’t. I love the old cars content. That’s what is popular. This video has almost the same amount of views in 1 day that your last video from 6 days ago has. That should say something. Love this kind of stuff, would love to see more of it!
I love this. I just picked up a 2003 infiniti fx45 with the tech package has everything you could imagine 320hp v8 awd center difflocker picked it up for $3700 with all the maintenance records since brand new also has the brembo brake kit!! Has just rolled over to 190k miles but doesn't even have a check engine light or any lights at all it sounds great. I love watching your videos Hoovie
Some people have converted the Airride suspension to KW, Ohlins or Suncore Industries. To not have the worry of that on a older vehicle, the conversion is a life saver. If I could buy this ML65 I would. Looks great
Thank you Hoovie for deciding to preserve one of these instead of dumping them. Makes me sad to see people throw away rare cars instead of selling them to another owner who will love them. Obviously in terms of reliability some people may not be willing to put up with it but there are people who will love the car despite it's faults.
Remember, this is the same guy that threw away an Alpina B7 which is arguably even more rare and will be worth serious money in the not so distant future.
I have an ML550 with the sport package, looks the same without the headache of air suspension and AMG parts cost. 0-60 in 5.5! These things are a bargain for what they are
Hoovie's premature celebration just before it bucks is comedy gold. I can see the subscriber that sold this Laughing & thinking "yeah, it seems like a good deal until you have to chase down that electrical gremlin."
I had one of these! Check the rear SAM (right side cover in the trunk). The tail light & third brake leaks water into it when it rains or car wash, and damage that SAM (notorious for the awful gaskets on the tail lights), causing the rear latch to not work right and other electrical issues. Might also be the cause of your battery drain since there might be a short on the SAM circuit board from the corrosion!
Jesus, Kansas is so weird, just watching Hoovie drive along with that endless sea of nothing as far as the eye can see trips me out. Being from California, it's really strange looking.
I had the same problem on my w211 e350. Water would get inside the tailgate, run through the electrical connector and after a while it would short everything. Tailgate would randomly think it’s open, trigger the dome lights in the car, the dash and it kept trying to soft close it and lock it. If the car was locked, it would also trigger the alarm .The secondary battery would go low overnight. Water also gets inside the door stopper, make them rust and get all deformed. In cold weather it’s usually worst. They all need locking mechanism in the end haha. Also, grounds always get ripped off in both hinges. Good luck 🤞
This channel has taught me a)good mechanics actually save you $. B) get everything fixed. C) do the regular maintenance d) get the car derailed- all this = happy car
B) get everything fixed. I feel this really depends on the car and your situation A trusted mechanic though will help you navigate, even Wizard will point out small leaks and wearing items and say it *could* get replaced but we will just watch it for now and do it later. He also considers differently for beaters that aren't worth a lot. Like the car he setup for his daughter's boyfriend.
Except when you go nuts getting everything “perfect” on an old car. I bought a 2008 Mazda 6S hatchback, 3.0 V6 with the Toyota 6 speed trans. Decided to put money into it because it has a very reliable engine & trans. I’ve replaced almost everything there is to replace. Probably would be $6-7K in just labor for the stuff I’ve done. I mean I’ve gone as far as replacing all of the motor mounts, realizing aftermarket mounts aren’t so great, and then swapping them out again with OEM ones and reinforcing them with polyurethane lol. The car is mint though and should last another 100K miles (has 134K, but looks like 50K)
Open the trunk and open the box on the right side. All of these cars have the same problem with water inside that get in by the right light. It destroys your fusebox and also the pump tot opens the trunk.
A simple fix.... The rear door latch needs lubrication because it's stuck in the open position. If you manually push it back... It should work in theory. All your drainage power should go away once you replace the battery as well. I feel the door handle in the rear is causing all the issues if it's not closing properly. I have a GL550 that does the same thing you have to disassemble it to lubricate it. But I am sure that will solve your issue. Great content awesome deal on your AMG and all your other cars thank you for all your videos they are amazing! 💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Hoovie! I would start off by taking that WALMART Battery out of there asap! I had used a Walmart battery in my 2007 ML350 and it it would keep draining and dying and eventually needed to be replaced again in 3 months or less! I ended up going with a AGM battery and never had issues after wards! Also, that white battery symbol is for the Auxiliary Battery, it’s needing to be replaced! White is auxiliary battery and Red battery light is main battery! (I used to work at a Mercedes Dealer). Would test alternator output and make sure it’s around 13.8V or better… Hope this helps a bit! I love watching your channel, especially when it’s Mercedes Contact! I really love this AMG, Wishing I still had my 2007 ML350 4Matic! It was a great suv!
You two hitting the engine was reminiscent of Derek Zoolander and Hansel trying to get inside the Apple computer! Score! Mercedes interiors age SO well it's crazy!
You know, when the Wizard confronts situations where filming the work would take too long, a condensed re-enactment of the process would certainly be welcome. I hope it’s a win for team Hoovie!
The tail gate issue is probably a bad hatch latch - they wear out (ask me how I know!). After it cycles correctly a few times the close/lock button may work OK. If not, change the switch - they go bad also.
There is no way you lose on this. Even if there was a rod through the block you'd probably double your money at least just parting it out considering how good a condition everything is in.
I have a decent 03 4runner with 285k miles. I can't afford to redo the front end. Would you take? The muffler is messed up too. And it needs an intake gasket. And it has a bad seatbelt in the back. And a cracked dash. It's probably the most abused 2003 in the US. Great show material.
Hoovie, who told you the air shocks go out all the time on these cars? They last 70-100k with no problems. They’re obviously more expensive but they don’t just crap out frequently.
This may have all been mentioned already in the comments, however: You will need to do lifters, they wear and we've seen these engines wear through a lifter and then the top of a valve until the keepers let go and the valve drops 😳 You will need to do head bolts, very common as you mentioned. The rear gate has an electronic latch actuator, so common a problem our local dealer has them in stock. The power closing function is hydraulic, pump is under the rear luggage area on the right side. Aeroshell 41 is a good hydraulic fluid to fill the reservoir, or you can get the whole pump and cylinder. If the Wizard gets parts from WorldPac he can order one for reasonable. If it hasn't been done you will probably need to do a conductor plate in the transmission. Not terrible, I bet the Wizard has done a few of those. Look for water intrusion, super common on these. I have a GL of this era, I like them and with what you got this for and the condition it's in it may very well be worth saving.
“They tried to make these AMG’s special even though they’re made in Alabama..” that might be the biggest beat down since UGA handled business in the National Championship!! 🤣🤣
The battery drainage issue was more than likely the trunk latch not working. I had a similar issue with mine. Changed the latch and the issue was gone at least for the battery drainage issue.
Hey Hoovie, nice pickup! I have the exact same car and color, I ran into some of the same issues with electrical! I have some videos on my page that cover some of them and how I solved them. It might be having a sunroof leak. Also the OEM command radio can be causing the electrical drains, I replaced mine a few months back and it solved the parasitic draw. I actually traced it using the amphound tool that wizard had done a video on a while back. My 08 has about 80k miles. There are some sensors in the rear hatch that can cause that issue but I think the real issue is probably your radio! I went with a aftermarket apple carplay unit from AVIN that I've been very happy with. Tell the wizard to use the amp hound on the fuses when the car is locked, mine was drawing over 1 amp!
It started with the 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited. It was in the area of 345 Hp and about the same in torque. It was the fastest production suv at the time.
Now that’s a steal! Its really cheap even with issues. Although (depending the issue) repair costs can build up fast with these type of cars! A good one with that mileage would cost about 18.000 euro’s here in the Netherlands. Wich is approximately 20.000 USD. So that leaves u a lot of space for repairs! 👌🏻
You could part that out for at least double what he paid for it. Actually, you could prob get $5000 for the engine alone. A running AMG 6.3 V8 is a desirable engine!
@@elmayimbe_the_amateur_mechanic That would be a reconditioned engine then. A recon AMG 6.3 goes for around $10,000. One in Hoovies M-Class would easily fetch $5,000
A few things I have learned from Hoovie Garage is this: Mercedes and BMWs are terrible and unreliable out of warranty. Old exotic cars are money pits. Do not follow in the path of Hoovie, get a Lexus,KIA, or Honda.😂

My 1960 Pontiac was like that. They got tired of it because they had to put a transmission in it, which even then was hard to find the right one and they'd messed with trying to fix the original first. I put 30,000 miles on it as a daily in the mid-1990s with no real issues. Back then it was a cool car but worthless, a nice one wasn't hard to find for five grand. (because it was a four door). Probably the best driving car I ever had, big and comfortable like sitting on your sofa, but with the long wheelbase and wide track it handled like a slot car, and the 389 and 4-speed Hydramatic it was fast and could cruise 75 all day long.
Hoovie, I have a good friend would until recently had a similar ML. His trunk hatch did the exact same thing, and he fixed it by replacing the bottom trim and assembly mechanism. The lock actuator/trunk latch fails and it always thinks it open

If you find the amp draw, you can wire in a relay for power on that circuit/ fuse, tie it to the ignition switch fuse to turn the relay on. That will keep the battery drain from happening when the vehicle is off.
Did you get it fix as I had the same issue on my ML280 turned out to be a fault with the Rear SAM. Replaced that and all my electrical issues went away cost £350 to fix.

Yes it definitely needs a battery. Scan clear all codes. There will be a lot SAM’s screaming low voltage! Drive and check codes again. Far as the back hatch need actuator. Common issue on these. No big deal and not bad to put in. Find the battery drain and your good! Drain probably in air suspension system or bad alternator. More than likely it will need an alternator.

I had a 07 ML320 CDI and that hatch was problematic. At 170k I would often get "hatch is open" warning, and it would take a few slams before you would hear the mechanism latch. You have to replace the internal latch/locking mechanism/solenoid inside the hatch to get it to close right. I can tell you have the same problem by the sound it makes. If I recall correctly you remove the interior panel, drill out the rivets, put the new one in and rivet it back in.
I like how Mercedes/AMG rounded up 6208 cc to 6.3 liters. I guess since Ford did it forever with the 302 “Windsor” (which was technically a 4.9 liter engine, but 5.0 sounded better as well as they only rounded up .05 of a liter, not .92) then they can get away with it now. 🤷🏻♂️
Mercedes have been doing that for years, especially with the AMG models, the 6.3 specifically though is a call back to the famous 300 SEL 6.3 which is why the smaller engined versions kept the name for a while.
It's a German tax law thing. Annual road taxes for pre-2009 cars are calculated based on engine displacement, charging a certain amount per 100 ccm (these days it's based on emissions, so it gets more complicated), and they always round up, so your taxes on a 6208 ccm engine are the same as on a 6300 ccm engine (all other factors being equal).
The sam module in the right rear under the fuse box is wet which is why the battery dies and the trunk won’t open the taillight seals go bad and it leaks into the back wetting the module and the tailgate pump had the same problem I opened the module dried and cleaned corrosion with alcohol
Way to go Hoovie!…you have learned your lesson for sure!!…like the spare parts for lambos, bmw, audi,Porsche and so on!!….you sell your 5 cent sticker for 5$…hahaha hilarious!!
Ah yes, electrical issues on an ML Mercedes. I've experienced the uncooperative tailgate issue myself. No power opening/closing is one thing, but wait until the latch stops working properly too! Won't open, won't close, opens randomly when driving! No power seats, no problem. How about the door locks? Don't carry any guests if you're worried about the embarrassment of not being able to open the doors. The platform is solid and this engine is mighty, but the gremlins always win in the end.

A real AMG! (no 43/53)
Supercar Hoovie going back to his roots.
I agree. He’s definitely a far cry from where he started these days.
Hope you guys enjoyed a little backstory to the car and I really enjoyed watching this video.
which car have you gotten instead of ML63?
What drained the battery overnight
This man knows his stuff. This actually might be it
On the x164 platform (the GL series, which is the same platform, just longer, think Tahoe to Suburban) rear SAM water damage may also be from clogged sun roof/moon roof drains.

Seems good so far!
for that ESP and jerking movement it might need a new ECM

@@ic1815 the back ones are even cheaper. And the module itself rarely dies, unless it's drenched in water due to blocked drains. On those MLs the rear Sam sits low behind the rear fenders and the taillight seals leak after ten years. Drowns the module and depending how bad it gets will kill it.

2014 C63 owner here - This high pitched noise you are hearing is most likely a bad PCV valve, which is fairly common on these. Not too difficult to replace, however it is necessary to have the intake manifold removed, otherwise the job becomes a major pain, due to a lack of space.
Other things to check on these are;
Headbolts - Should they be the older "female" star patter, these should be changed to the upgraded "Male" Torx bolts. These were updated by Mercedes in 2011 ->
Camshafts and Valve buckets -
Camshafts wear prematurely on ALL M156's due to incompatible material hardness in the cams and the valve buckets.
I miss my ML320
A great buy indeed and love your work! Just to clarify for anyone interested, I had an airbag go bang while in the raised off-road setting and after lowering the car to ‘normal’ position I drove it home 150 miles or so almost as normal but with a little extra care. No need to be concerned about being stranded somewhere as such. These ML63’s are so much damned fun!
Check for water leaks in the “wells” behind the rear inspection hatches in the boot (trunk). Water can get in behind the rear light clusters and soak your electrics.

I remember that in my old ML430!
My bet is a bad SAM that isn't turning something off.
Got the same issue. Had my mechanics to relocate the electrical board under the passenger seat.... A real bummer 👎
I would bet it’s the latch that doesn’t work anymore. It happened to my ML350 as well, it’s a very common problem
I remember seeing them new and after all these years they’ve aged well. I’d sort and keep for sure.
After owning one for 4 years I can tell you they are all in immaculate condition because they are either waiting for parts or being repaired. I would also immediately put split loom tubing over the engine wiring harness, the hood vents dump water straight onto the harness and ruin it over time.

The air shocks themselves tend to announce failure by leaking down overnight. The bigger issue is pump failure, which leaves you with no suspension once the shocks have bled down.
Tyler: "you can do it on your own time" Wizard: "no I can do it on your time and you'll be charged per hour"

The R63 was seriously weird. The minivan that even Dads approve.

Was an ML that brought me to Hoovies garage page, long time ago.
Thank you Hoovie for deciding to preserve one of these instead of dumping them. Makes me sad to see people throw away rare cars instead of selling them to another owner who will love them. Hoovie's premature celebration just before it bucks is comedy gold. I can see the subscriber that sold this Laughing & thinking "yeah, it seems like a good deal until you have to chase down that electrical gremlin."
Exactly Adam, exactly. 👍
Well now that you say it, California looks pretty strange to the rest of the country too - just for different reasons 😉
kansas is a dump man. you would only know if youve been there.
I feel this really depends on the car and your situation
A trusted mechanic though will help you navigate, even Wizard will point out small leaks and wearing items and say it *could* get replaced but we will just watch it for now and do it later. He also considers differently for beaters that aren't worth a lot. Like the car he setup for his daughter's boyfriend.
How would someone get a car derailed?

Would test alternator output and make sure it’s around 13.8V or better…
Hope this helps a bit!
How long until someone steals it and drives it into a bunch of bushes.
That was the very 1st video I saw.
The tail gate issue is probably a bad hatch latch - they wear out (ask me how I know!). After it cycles correctly a few times the close/lock button may work OK. If not, change the switch - they go bad also.
Five bucks for a sticker?! Jesus Hoovie, I know you've got car loans out the wazoo but it's not on us to pay for them directly!
At least include S&H. It’s a stamp and an envelope! Cmon mang!
Don't buy it then.

I have the ml63 2007 70k miles i drive it everyday. No problems at all.
There is no way you lose on this. Even if there was a rod through the block you'd probably double your money at least just parting it out considering how good a condition everything is in.
Spoiler alert: he loses on this.
Hoovie I can see your struggle written in your eyes. God bless you.
I am amazed at how many times Hoovie doesn't take a German car to the Expert on them.
The Car Ninja.
Yeah, the ninja is a really good mechanic, BMW gods like that guy are rare, wish I lived by his shop!
70k is a lot ? Lol thats not a lot of miles.
i converted mine to traditional and it drives like a brand new truck
This may have all been mentioned already in the comments, however:
You will need to do lifters, they wear and we've seen these engines wear through a lifter and then the top of a valve until the keepers let go and the valve drops 😳
You will need to do head bolts, very common as you mentioned.
How about a shirt with your Hertz Mustang and Superbird on it with "They're real and they're spectacular" written on it?

Hoovie: this AMG suv is one of the first performance suvs!
GMC Typhoon: what am I, chopped livers?
And those apparently, surprisingly handle swell. Which is shocking.
It started with the 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited. It was in the area of 345 Hp and about the same in torque. It was the fastest production suv at the time.
Hoovie listened to his audience and got a true hooptie.
A running AMG 6.3 V8 is a desirable engine!
...after you do the headbolts and possibly cam actuators or phasers.
It would be criminal to part this out. Plus he is very wealthy and is above that type of hassle just to make a few bucks. Get real.

My '01 X5 has been excellent, but I miss my LS400 so bad so I'm selling it for a moneypit LS460 lol
Both Hoovie and Wizzard convinced me to Buy a Buick with the 3800...
I don't need one as I have 3 cars, but... for some reason... I just want one now.

Yeah it needs a break from the exotic cars!
If you find the amp draw, you can wire in a relay for power on that circuit/ fuse, tie it to the ignition switch fuse to turn the relay on. That will keep the battery drain from happening when the vehicle is off.
I'm so jealous right now lol. For $5k? That's a steal, even if it needs a little work!

Oh yea could never forget that vid good times ! 😂

Yeasir I do. I hope this doesn't get stolen.
Make sure you do the headbolts!! That's a masterpiece of an engine. They didn't fix that issue until 2012.
Nice to see you sticking with your Hooptie roots!
@Man ne the new C63 has a 2 litre 4cyl😞
Toyota/Lexus is doing it now with their twin turbo V6.

Check the release handle on the door above the plate. They tend to jam and could be the cause of the battery drain. This is a common fault and a cheap easy fix.
