In these ever worrying and unpredictable times, it’s nice to know Mercedes are keeping things predictable
I’m sorry but I’ve driven Mercedes S classes and AMG models my entire life. All have been extremely reliable and have only cost me the typical maintenance required of any car. This ML AMG isn’t reliable and issues because the previous owner didn’t take care of it properly and let problems and issues go without attention. And even then I don’t think previous owner was even the original owner.

W140! Had a 97 S500 that was finally traded with just 300,000 miles on it. And I had a 99 S600 that was wonderful. The only big things I did on it were replace the ac compressor and once replaced the starter. And on both I’ve replaced rear accumulators. The S600 I still have and it currently has 170,000 miles on the clock. I bought both of them from second owners and both had approx 70,000 on them. I’ve never owned a w220 as it was ugly smaller and cheaper. And I didn’t want any part of it. However, my late grandfather had a 03 s500 that he bought new amd had dealer service till warranty ran out and then his Indy merc guy maintained the car. It was sold at the estate sale with 140,000 roughly on the clock. The biggest thing in the service records was a headlight and having the air struts all replaced.

@@garrettdodson6110 "Your experience may vary". My elderly parent bought a lovely Mercedes, drove it "conservatively", had it dealer-maintained "by the book", and the rear differential seal failed at 40,000 miles. $1,000 to fix.....
I feel your pain, Hoovie. My 11 year old Honda CR-V needed a tail light bulb, and I have had to replace the rubber windshield wiper inserts _twice_ in just 120,000 kilometers, much of which was on cobblestone roads. It's just one thing after another keeping up with the repairs on that car. 🔧

Get a plate welded under the catalytic converter(s) on that Honda before the cat gets stolen by a thief. Honda OEM cats are outrageously in demand by thieves, are outrageously expensive, and aftermarket ones won’t pass smog!

I've got the exact same spec ML63 I've owned for the past 2 years. I can confirm no one should own it if they don't work on their own cars. I've had to fix so many things on the car since owning it including all of the electrical issues, water leaks and battery drains. Mine only has under 90k miles too. On the plus side its alot of fun to have that much power in a SUV, and I never see any on the road. Haven't decided how long I may want to keep it. This is NOT a daily driver, it can be down for a week at any point for various issues.

I remember considering buying one, i ended up with a 2007 ml500 with the m273, which apart from the usual steering rack issues, the failing radio, and the eventual airmatic rear suspension leak, it drove great

I owned a bluetec ml320 for a couple of weeks after like 30 hrs and 2500$ it was still needing much love, the worst (or best part) is that I still sold it for a profit.
Same story here. Had my ML for three years and i honestly cant remember a single time it would be reliable for longer than 3 weeks at a time before something new broke.
Major water leaks somewhere that filled up the floor area so that you would hear the sound of waves slooshing back and forth when driving. Electrical failures at random, engine oil leaks and air suspension failures.
Thanks to the horrible experience with my ML it drove me to go with a brand new EV for my next car simply because EV’s have less parts to fail, less maintenance cost and 5 year factory warranty. It also is alot faster and more fun to drive. So nice being able to put 100k km on my car and not have to pay a single penny for repairs or worry about it failing on me.
Love that 12.3 mpg number plate at least that's honest and reliable

well l get that a lot but with smart work and discipline, I have created multiple streams of income for myself from real estate and from the blockchain mining network,that makes it so easy for me to afford these little things.
Ironically those axles are like ~$200 in Germany for a name brand replacement (the Mercedes original will be insanely expensive here, too).

Since the W164 ML's (except for the AMG-designed parts, which have been made and installed in Deutschland after importing the bodies from USA) were all Alabama (USA)-made, could be that those replacement axles would be actually BETTER THAN OEM?

@@syxepop For example BMW used Löbro as OEM, they are best quality i had in hand. Much better than SKF. Im not familiar with Mercedes OEM brands.
Never smart money to replace a CV boot after it splits, I learned that from the past 30 years with various FWD cars I've owned, when the boot splits - the CV joint eventually in time craps out. The cost of taking the shaft out, dismantling the half shaft, replacing the boot almost is the same price as getting a remanufactured shaft (or at least 75% of the cost). When the boot is split or partially split it starts to throw most of the grease out and all you need to get into the joint is a bit of grit and it is not too long after that you have a failing CV joint. Usually when you spot a split boot it is too late and best to replace the full shaft
As the Wizard explained the part that failed is not available with is why they tried to fix it rather than replace it.
Do not agree, I keep my OEM joints as long as possible. That "rebuilt" axle from oreilly will rarely last more than 2 years. They are usually junk. Also OEM boots with grease/clamps are usually around $40
I bought a 2006 BMW 530XI Touring against all logic, and after watching your struggle with BMWs and only a year after my failure of a first BMW, my 04 750LI.
It had a dead transmission, but I had the foresight to buy an aftermarket warranty with the car and they covered the rebuild. Since then, it's been reliable. Drove it to Utah and back.
But now it seems the air suspension compressor has water in it, so whenever it's below freezing it completely craps out. But I still drove it to Kansas City and back last month without a single issue and only two quarts of oil.
The only reason I still put up with it (besides the fact I love it) is your inspiration of not giving up on hoopties
Compressed air tanks need to be drained periodically to get the water out, too, so that's not an entirely unexpected problem (even if shop air is likely to have far more throughput than an air suspension pump). The only question is whether they were smart enough to include a drain somewhere and where it's hiding...

My first Bmw, 1995 525i. Had all the receipts in the glove box, totaling over 46,000 bucks.
ONE RECEIPT, from 2001, was 22,000 bucks for a transmission repair, and 650 bucks for a clutch fan (40 dollar part now)
I only paid 1200 bucks, lasted me 9 months then the auto magic transmission had no more tricks left
I'm continually amazed at how unreliable these exotic/luxury cars are. It's like they just throw parts together, slap a $300,000 price tag on it, and no concern or care is taken for how long it will last.
The reason is that they engineered parts/electronics fast as F**** , it was a huge battle to have the latest and up to date stuff. Reliability was not the focus, thats why these cars dont last long.
Never used to be like that. German Luxury Cars made in the 80s and early 90s were made with the highest attention to detail and quality materials. Then it became a technology race so quality had to be sacrificed to keep these cars cost competitive unfortunately.
The only Luxury brands these days that hold up really well are Acura and Lexus.
The more expensive and troublesome they are, the better they work as status symbols.
It’s a shame that cars aren’t made like watches or tools, meaning when you spend more you expect to get a higher quality product that lasts longer. If you made a chart showing Price/Longevity, you should see a linear curve showing higher prices = longer lifespan, but it seems cars are the opposite these days. As the price goes up, longevity goes down, it’s a shame.

This past week I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a 1991 Park Avenue from a friend. $1,000. I was all-in until my wife convinced me it wouldn’t be a great idea. I know the 3800 is a great engine. But this video reminds me how little interest I have in owning something that requires repairs. I’ll have to live vicariously through Hoovie. And I think that’s why I love your channel so much. Keep it up, Tyler!
As long as that park Avenue was used regularly and not sitting around it could have been a great idea... but.. back in 08 I bought a 91 that had 38k km on it and had sat alot. It was it really great shape for a local car so I went to get it running and pulled it out of the driveway and almost simultaneously the water pump and the control arm broke... the car left on a flat deck to the scrap yard as I dont think that breaking like that is a good sign on longevity.
The true ownership cost of early 90s Buicks with the 3800 comes from flooring it every possible chance you get.

16:25 This is why I never replace CV boots and always replace entire axle assemblies. Used wouldn't be my preference, but if it's all you can find..? It is what it is.
That is a Warranty Claim for the Wizard right there. If it was that Bad, He should of never rebuilt and replaced the boots on that Front CV shaft. I would almost bet that the inner drive cup Circlip was not installed properly, hence why the shaft is spinning.

I love that Range Rover ! I had a similar one from 2010 that I totaled but it kept me completely safe and it was amazing to drive, I miss it so much !

Back in May of 2018, I bought a 2011 Honda Accord EX 4dr sedan (2.4 L) with 72,000 miles on it, for $11,000. As of now, March 1 of 2022, it has cost me exactly $0 dollars in repairs / updates. Best car I've ever owned. Back in October 2000, I bought a brand new 2001 model year Mercedes C320 - lots of problems, especially with brake lights / relays, and then traded up to brand new 2001 S430. My S430 had COMAND center software problems right from the get-go, and air bag suspension issues, all within 3 months after purchase (all covered under warranty, of course, but still). Got rid of it fast.

I had that happen on my 94 Subaru legacy. Same wheel too. It had actually failed about 20 miles before it let loose but there was a metal bearing retainer in the boot that got wedged just right so that my conservative driving that day kept it together. ¼ mile from my destination, a sharp left turn, and a hard acceleration onto a highway and it let loose around 45mph. I coasted in to the place I needed to be just fine, jumped out with the car in drive and saw the same thing (but it was the outside u-joint) I changed it myself in the gravel driveway I parked in over the next 2 hours between gathering tools and running to a parts store 12 miles north. It wasn't a bad day but could have been easily!

@@dcarts5616 they all have over 50k lol they take a regular service at intervals you really shouldn’t have problems with any car if you maintain it. I own a trucking company and own e-class, metros vans etc.

Can’t go wrong with a range! I have a 2010 full size and oh yes my timing chains needed replacing! I have good friends and was only nearly 2,000 for parts and 2,300 labor! OBVIOUSLY HORRIBLY EXPENSIVE… could be worse though. Also there is a slew of other problems but I love it!! Great car to drive.
A reason why we don’t like to do axle boots is because you never know how long the bearings have been contaminated, so it’s safer to not rebuild it
Yeah they almost never last long even just taking them apart to change the boot and reinstall you see failures

Yep, I always go with a new CV axle. Never sell a customer a boot.
I think it is a bit more common to repair them in the UK as you need a mandatory annual vehicle check so you can be pretty sure it likely was not too long ago .
Things that broke on my 2008 ML63;
- All 4 air suspensions (they're expensive and different from regular W164 of the same year)
- Front lower and upper arms
- Transmission electronics
- Cats (replaced with sports high flow which was a treat)
- ECM was replaced, it started acting like it needed exorcism
- Throttle bodies and entire intake, the TB are inside the manifold removing them was a real treat😏
- Rear SAM (There's a notorious leak on the rear of the W164 that soaks the rear SAM causes battery drain, messes with the rear hatch and brake lights, that could be your problem Hoovie)
- All AMG ignition coils (not cheap)
- Radiator (oil cooler side started leaking)
- AC compressor
- Oil cooler
- PCV valve (nightmare to change)
- Comand system (Stereo replaced with better aftermarket)
- Factory woofer
- Thermostat and housing
All these things failed at different times, the car was such a good car to drive and you'd forget the horrors when it's running, I eventually gave up and sold it for a quarter of the amount I had in the car.
What's strange is the head bolts of the M156 that get so much attention never gave me issues but all these little gremlins that cost a lot of money to fix. I still think they're brilliant cars.
I’ve owned a few heavily depreciated BMW’s but being a tech I can afford to fix them. They sure are fun when they work correctly.

I know I am going against the grain on many viewers, but.... It doesnt matter which vehicle you choose, there will ALWAYS be problems on the vehicle you end up with. I forgive Tyler because he doesnt know any better, but I have been blessed where I can afford many "regular" cars and I have had basically the sane problems across the board from Infintys to Hondas to Pontiacs. My Dad loved GM cars and I loved Japanese so we always had a bit of everything in the shop. Each company has MANY plants and the variance is huge. Just appreciate what you have and push on....
I like Hoovie's videos and Hoovie himself but what he does for me is convince me to stick with Japanese vehicles.
American here, may not be as pretty or efficient, but there's at least 6 models that use the same part.
Japanese cars are very stagnant tech wise (ironically) and they still rust really really bad especially Mazad's. Otherwise I agree

Well, I’m french living in Spain and only buy VW/Audi. Here the market goes mostly on turbo diesel engines; they are efficient and reliable and the cars have great quality. Got 2 VW right now and one of which for 15 years and never had issues other than regular maintenance
I guess it was a good thing I sold my 1999 sl500 after 9 trouble free years. Had 62000 when I bought it and 73000 when I sold it. Sunny day car only, no rain, snow, or other car killing adventures. LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF DRIVING IT.

To me the Mercedes looks dated. The Land Rover is a pretty timeless design.
Yea the merc doesn’t look that good. There was one parked by my house for 2 weeks, in those 2 weeks it deflated to the ground and puked up probably 4 quarts of engine oil. It was just towed away by the police for being abandoned
Land rover is timeless but the mercedes doesn't look that bad. Dated sure, but not bad looking.
ML could be a Hyundai or something quite easily, it doesn't look up market.
I personally think the W164 design is great, and considering how the current W167 looks, it looks pretty modern. I’m biased though, as I have a W164.

I love this channel. Simple as that.
i took a chance on a Mercedes m class (non amg) that i knew wasn't maintained and needed a new radiator and power steering pump. I spent a fair few bucks to replace those (the entire front end has to come off to replace either of those parts) and thought I might have gotten lucky. Then the cruise control started sticking on. It wouldn't kick off when you touched the brakes or tried to turn it off using the cruise controls. The engine was more than powerful enough to overcome any attempts at slowing down using the brakes. You had to put the car into neutral to get off the cruise. If you turned the car off in this state it wouldn't restart. The first time this happened it left me on the side of the road in 115 degree heat in the middle of a missile test site in New Mexico. After sitting for a couple of hours waiting for a tow truck it finally started and I was able to drive into Alamogordo. Nothing could be found and it was written off as a computer/electrical glitch. I tried the cruise again on the way home and the same thing as I was entering Palm Springs with similar results. When i finally got home (without using the cruise) i sold it to a recycler. Experiment over.
Both SUV’s are nice. Sorry to see the issues that you are having with them. In August of 2020 I bought a 2010 Mercedes GL450 with 97k miles. It had 2 previous owners. The interior and exterior are in great shape. The main reason I bought it was the car fax report. It showed that both owners had the vehicle serviced at a Mercedes Benz dealership throughout their ownership. Besides the routine maintenance, critical things were replaced such as rear air bags and a/c compressor. Right now it has 105k on it. I drive it on the weekends and use it for road trips. About 6 months ago I had the Service B done at the Mercedes dealership. As a part of the service they will perform an inspection. Nothing needed to be repaired. Since I plan on purchasing a small RV I had the transmission service done. So far the GL has been good to me. It rides very nice, especially for a 12 year vehicle.

This is the most honest vid I've ever seen. My family & I had a large wholesale / mech business for many years. Dealers & mechanics dabble in exotic & odd ball vehicles for the lulz because we can - and even then it sometimes is inadvisable. The average person should just watch for the entertainment value but never attempt it. Ruinously expensive. 😨
I almost bought a ML63 recently, glad I went with a GX470 instead. Thousands cheaper and priceless peace of mind.

I have an 04 GX470. Absolutely love this tank of a truck. Just did the white rim trail in Canyonlands. The truck didn't miss a beat with 200k on the clock.

@@autoavids What did you choose? I have TRD Pros with Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. I haven't done suspension yet but only rubbed a few times on the trail. A 1in lift would have avoided all rubbing.
I did a bunch of preventative MX. Radiator, hoses, thermostat, timing belt, pulleys and accessory belt.
Also did front hubs and CVs. I did get the front diff fluid changed but haven't had time to do the transfer case or rear diff.
I'll end up tackling them when I do the tranny (fluid, filter and gasket).

"Catastrophic" means a total engine or transmission failure. Not a broken CV joint. Catastrophic for the wallet though, I'll admit...
I had one of those but in 3.0 liter diesel, 2012 year build. Bought it at 164000km, sold it at 227000km last year and never did I ever had an issue with that car. And I do drive quite a lot. Replaced it with newer model 2016 year build, because there is simply no other car as a Range Rover.

In the 10+ years my family has had our 2006 ML350, we’ve never had major steering issues like that. I guess, despite the numerous small issues it’s had, we’ve actually been pretty lucky. Hoping she stays reliable for us 🙏🙏

I’ve got a 2009 ML63 for about 3 and a half years now. However, mine only had 48k miles when I got it and the previous owner did LOTS of preventative maintenance. At 103k miles now between cross country road trips and daily driving, and all I’ve done is refresh front suspension bushings, basic maintenance, and most importantly
mercedes is crap.

Even though it may be unreliable, I really want it! I had a 2007 ML350 4Matic, and I loved it, had its quirks but it was my first and favorite suv, super capable on and off road

People commenting on how bad Mercedes are, some even saying “European cars are bad” , don’t you all realize that the big troubles come when maintenance has been neglected for months or years ? If you watch Tyler videos OF COURSE you will get the impression that all cars are rubbish, because that’s the whole purpose of the channel ! I had a w204 c class estate about 15 years ago, drove it 333.000 km with ZERO issues and ZERO rattles, noises etc . But of course I did all the needed maintenance exactly when needed .
I've still got my 09 W204 it is the best car I have ever owned, still drives like the day I got it and had zero issues with it. looked to replace it with a newer CLA but I hate the cheap plastic Ipad screen thingy bolted on the dash. Give me old school dials.

Making it out at a young age is quite difficult. I started a side hustle at 17, saved up and made some good investments. l'm 28,live on my own and having a good life for myself. Big ups to you and everyone out there trying

Ford had such a CV issue in early testing of front-drive cars that they limited the turn radius to container ship levels. Dodge Omni the same way, until things were sorted. You could blow them to bits by cranking the steering hard and hammering the throttle.
You have just described my cornering technique. I don't think I'll get a Dodge Omni, whatever that is.
Their current stuff is much better. I've got a pre-facelift 2nd gen Fusion AWD from them and its turning radius is pretty decent for such a massively long vehicle.

Unless you love working on vehicles on a very regular basis and chasing weird mechanical and electrical gremlins, I'd not recommend any of the big, high horsepower SUVs. They're just not reliable enough. In terms of interior and exterior design, I prefer the Range Rover, but I don't know how usable its infotainment and various safety and driver assistance features are compared to the Mercedes. At the end of the day, I'd choose whichever one offered me the more convenient and comfortable ride, since that's one of the reasons you get an air-ride SUV, after all. Either way, unless you want to sell it off cheap, I'd let the wizard figure out what's wrong with the Range Rover, since it is a contender for the big bad SUV to keep.

I bought my wife a 2008 Mercedes 350 e series car. It ran so beautiful. Weighed a ton but the power to handle it. Everything in it was just awesome to drive. I was in a bad accident and my back I can’t crawl under or bend over a car any longer. Took it to tire shop and they changed the oil. Upon start up it knocked like crazy. The kid poured the motor oil in the transmission. Likely saved me a fortune in maintenance but wife cried.
If it doesn't last 24 hours, then it ain't fixed

I was a Euro auto tech for 15 years. People would ask me all the time what they should buy if they had enough money for a nice car, and I would always tell them to buy a loaded Camry or Accord.

it depends on whether Tyler was told that the regrease was a patch and risky but cheaper option,.or.go with a 2nd hand beer unit more $$$. That discussion didn't get raised though. If Wizard just took upon himself, then yep, he's ego is getting a little big maverick, and it's his fail again.
I've seen his own videos, he has a pretty high opinion of his work which is.good if it rings true. You'll never know, we don't see the other customers test drive their cars.
I used to work for a British Race car team (deliberately not adding the name!) And we used to see this once or twice a month on our cars, then we beefed up the cv's and driveshafts and started blowing link drives, then went back to the weaker shafts hahaha.
We would attend every race (24hr enduro normally) with about 6 fully built shafts and enough spares to build another 6 if needed! Seen this hundreds of times
I'm afraid the Wizard is going to have to take a little bit of heat on this one. That should have been spotted and replaced while it was apart and not put back on.
Due to how they where talking about parts availability and such, the Wizard and Tyler probably had arranged the fix

Sage advice Tyler, When my Daughter bought her 06 V8 XC90 to replace her 03 Diamante (Actually an AWD Magna Sport) I told her to keep the old car and explained that part of the deal with this next gen luxury SUV was higher cost and more frequent service intervals so her old car would get some use.
She paid about AU 7k to buy the XC90 and has spent that in the 2 years in repairs and servicing, enjoys the Volvo and feels secure driving it having accepted the sage advice of her dear old Dad but as part of the deal I also introduced her to my friends at a good Indy Volvo shop. She makes good coin, has disposable income and is kinda happy to pay for the experience......... But im now introducing her to noughties Grand Cherokee's as a better and more capable kind of Softroader SUV.
She wanted a Toyota but they too get VERY expensive to own after a while. #$UVlife

The Citroen DS, BX, CX hydro-pneumatic suspension was a simple system and amazingly reliable. You got driver adjustable ride height, self levelling, super smooth ride and great handling. Their unfair reputation for poor reliability was entirely down to rust. A problem that afflicted every 1960s to 1980s car. Why don’t todays makers use the Citroen system. Check it out.
I used to have a BX estate. Good car until the rust got into it. Estimate for getting it through the annual MOT (required to drive legally in the UK) was more than the car was worth. Sigh.

Many AWD vehicles deal with loss of traction on a single wheel by applying braking to that one spinning wheel, which redirects torque to the remaining wheels.
Because the CV had completely failed, applying the brake to that wheel didn't do anything - the input of the CV still spun, so no torque gets sent to any of the other wheels.
Had one of the front inner CV's on my Touareg pop out (circlip wasn't fully seated) one time and had exact same symptoms. Wouldn't move without engaging diff lock, and since the trans wouldn't have the brakes to keep the driveline still it'd grind going into park. Fun stuff (at least mine was fixed with a 2x4 and a hammer, though).

My daily driver is a 1990 Volvo 240DL Estate. One family car, as Ma bought Arthur new as her 60th birthday present to herself. 613,000 kilometers later, still purring like a contented cat and winter weather performance that will literally leave either of these fragile things in a snow bank. That is with the 2.3 litre Red Block and the factory installed Aisin-Warner AW70 automatic gearbox.
Those 508s are so beautiful to sit in and the 407s Peugeot diesels are very reliable
Maintenance costs and reliability are why my wife is hesitant for us to buy something like a Mercedes or BMW. Tyler I appreciate you mentioning about probably not having one as an only vehicle unless you have something else to drive also.

I have a lawn client with his ML63 amg been sitting in his driveway for YEARS. It's all mossy, wheels are rusted. Back window is busted and duct taped. I'd guess the car has 25k miles on it

Just before Christmas, same thing happened to my BRAT. Thanks to the locking transfer case I had the luxury to have FWD, 4WD and RWD on one vehicle. I live in a snowy country and was left only with RWD, that was the most fun trip to the shop ever.
I was actually expecting a much higher cost of ownership. I probably averaged 3-4K a year back when I daily drove my old 98 C5. For an SUV that could easily cost 2-3 times what the Vette did back in the day, that sounds pretty reasonable.
The suspension light is probably from the clunk. Broken ball joints will cause the car to drop and go into limp. The L320 gets a bad wrap, it's actually pretty reliable outside the grenade engine. The big problem is it is not fun to work on so the repairs ain't cheap. If you need parts you can get them air freighted from the UK where they are readily available and much cheaper, issue now is the shipping cost has trippled in the past year.
The range is heavier, the L320 is built like a tank it's body on frame, all steel.

No self-respecting mechanic would have replaced only the boot on a CV axle like that.. Replace the whole shaft assembly.
Boot replacements are fine on old clunkers with little power and little value but it's not worth the risk on a powerful, expensive vehicle like an AMG.
