- Welcome back to another EP!, Today Jack and I head out to some of our local tracks close to home to put the two rigs to the test. Two completley different setups. 1 being a tough solid axle 80s leaf sprung hilux, built for a purpose of absolutely dominating off-road #2 being the new 2016 N80 2.8L diesel dual cab Toyota hilux built up for a purpose of touring and handling the bush when its needed.
I hope you all enjoy this episode and comment below what you think!

Please please I have been following your ln106 for a long time would love too know what you have done , please help 🙏
٨
They both go pretty good, but that old solid axle flex just looks cooler doing it!
Hows the flex on it! Such a weapon the old girl
@@Onemoreventure no wonder a war was fought with only that single truck
@@FQP-7024 mine field. No problem if you are driving a Toyota hi lux
I madly love the shape of this old hilux, I think Toyota can’t beat their own hilux ! Shape wise.
Just like in the states, 1st gen Tacomas always look better than 2nd 3rd and even the new 2024 (4th gen tacoma) something about the late 80s and 90s body contours and built that are just unbeatable.
Who would be keen on a PART 2 or locker install & wheel vid on the old girl hilux? Any ideas what do people want to see?
@@rafaelguillermo3633 hahaha feedback ;)
yes as I am looking into getting a hilux myself as a first car don't if I should buy a cheap old one or save for a newer model
@@darkfyrelion5671
As a first car mate I'd suggest a cheaper one, being your 1st 4wd there will be things you'd need to learn and possible misshaps hehe along the way! I've had 3 or 4 4wds myself before getting into the new hilux & I'm glad i did because all of those learning curves payed off !! Hope this helps super exciting times😃
@@Onemoreventure like I do like the look of the holder hilux more, like price wise, what's the better car for the amount of money, a older model and doing it up and cash out for a newer model.
@@Onemoreventure also what is better specifically for a hilux, a solid Axel or a IFS
Love my ‘96 Lux LN106. Absolute beast of a thing off road
Gotta love the old girl with her solid axle setup and that flex. But you cant go wrong with the diff locks on the new lux either. They both did pretty well. I got a 2005 lux (2kD), and she's as solid as they come and reliable too. I guess you just cant go wrong with a Hilux given its history and reputation, that's for sure.
The 89 has more rocker clearance and ability stock than a modified modern version. Insane how much ground Toyota has given up on the capabilities and modifiability of their designs. Great comparison video! 👍
Go the old luxy
Such a beast
The only advantage new trucks have over the old is comfort. Otherwise less is more.
Comfort and easier power gains
And better traction control, both are great
Old rigs are easier and cheaper to fix most of the time
Chuck some 2nd gen surf seats in the 106, game over for the newer lux
just needs coils in the 106
Seeing the Kalamunda registration plate makes me feel so homesick . Been stuck in Sydney for two years ! Border supposedly opening in a week's time. YIPPEE .
Imagine what the old lux would be like if the same amount was spent on it👍👍
it would be insane! imagine an episode of that going wild on mods!
Imagine lockers 😍
My oldie had 100% Eaton front and rear lockers, it turned off-roading more like into a "let's rescue other fellas" event than having fun. It was sooo good, it was boring... Would buy it again.
Dude perfect music for the vid. Love me some mid paced metal with melody.
LN106 everyday!!!!
Love the way the old girl sounds with the turbo!
New is new, but old is gold. ❤
Solid front axle...leaf springs and shocks in front..... Game over ...old Hilux is a monster 👹
The 2016 hilux goes okay for a ifs car
However the old hilux easy won that for anything she’s a weapon
They are both sweet trucks but I like the old one better.
She is pretty beast running 35s now!
@@Onemoreventure hell yeah!
That 89 is sick
I love the simplicity and strength of old hilux.
They are beasts
I love the old Hilux unbreakable... the new look like comfortable nice shape.... hugs from Portugal I'm from Mozambique, khanimambo
Solid axle flex for dayss!
Btw aren't you terrified that there are people who roam this earth that call solid axles as "RiGiD aXLe"?
Owned an 87 ln65 for 28 years and loved it. Someone’s need was greater than mine, and they haven’t brought it back. Baxxards
i just discovered a goldmine of a channel here
You’re a legend mate Thankyou
Nice vid bro I like the effort you put in
That old luxy flexes real nice too! I miss my old one
Thanks man! she is a beast of a thing!
Miss my old one too. Biggest regret selling
So much more cabin sway and movement in the newer version!
IFS
Did you see any interior views of the older truck, illustrating the cabin sway? I certainly didn't. From what I did see, both trucks seemed to be bouncing around pretty good.
Just stumbled across your channel, and was super impressed. Nice work, and look forward to getting through more of your content 🤙 keep it up lads
Cheers Jono! Appreciate the support!
I like the old one better, the looks is more man, hope can have that one
Solo una hilux supera a otra hilux! Saludos desde Argentina
Bro I'm scared now lmao. A few days ago my dad gave me his 89' Toyota Hilux and I was wondering to myself if the newer models were better or not. Then out of nowhere this is in my recommendation, I didn't even say anything
Hahaha thats crazy
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING. 👁️
be carefull with it, there very prone to rolling. too narrow. you need big wheels. to offset the centre of grav, above axle weight. if they were 1 ft wider, they would be brilliant. the engine,,,if you can call it that,,needs upgrade to modern. when you can afford it,,buy an 80 series,or gu nissan,& never sell it..6 cyl tdi, is the go. not v6 or v8..
@@phantomwalker8251 would 35s work? And the engine has been handle, my dad and I extracted the old engine and installed a new and better one like it's brand new
The fact is that,
Old is Gold;
New is Bold
A big reason I want to move to Australia is for the old rust free Toyota’s!! Nothing like that here in Canada :(
I know right! Dont see then often
Come to NZ
Rust free toyota?? First time ive heard that said
Lol, they are called rustotas in Australia
don’t know about the rust free brother…but will get you to where you want to go…maybe not in comfort or in style or in ‘pussy pulling power’…..but WILL get you there…ab..so…fucking..lutely…that’s why we love em in ‘The Land Down Under’…ok maaate!
Well done mate great video. I'v got a current lux and have had a few of those live axles. New lux is really a billy goat with lockers front and rear, plus the auto, loads more torque, and my suspension is stock. Love the hill descent control too works amazing. Old one's have a lot more flex, superior for crossing over deep ruts etc and much cheaper and easier to lift and put big tyres on for the major woop di doos. More point and shoot, the new ones picking a line is much more important. Then again they do fall apart a lot, worst steering design on planet etc. They are nice in theory and to romanticise them but reality is if you want a live axle get an 80 series or GQ.
Thanks mate! I can't wait to put a front locker in the n80! I agree 80 series or gq is where its at even the old luxy is a beast! Thanks for the support 💪💪
damn you,,exact same i said. 80/100,or gu.. no computer. you want a 4x4. try find a 2000 ford s/duty,4.2tdi. low range is killer,,turns better than most toyotas,,79 series. &,with tdo6 turbo,more power. 12 lt 100.. in a 4t rig.. i fitted a disc 5.4 lt, rear diff,4.11,. lsd. tone ring. locker front,lunchbox. or detroit. no lines,no compressor.. i have 3 air tanks,for the tires. 3.5 minutes for 4 , 35,s. 3" lift,by me.. ford parts. 170 lt diesel, ford tanks,in cab type. 1 in tray.german motor,german g/box. IF,,it wasnt a work ute,,id cut the chassis to f100 swb specs..as did with my highboy f250 1975..if the lux was 8" to 1 ft wider.. would be killer 4x4..bit like a tacoma,with sas..
The old 80 and gq go bloody good, but the unlocked ln106 on 33s still goes further than a mates twin locked 80 🤷♂️
i always pick the simplicity of old vehicles
I done a old vs new aswell, felt like I won.... Old lux all the way
Literally just watched yours and then came to this haha
@@4wdantics636
I sold my one, felt like it wanted to roll over around every bend and when you high up on the mountain its not cool
@@ashfieldwakefield3221 any regrets? Other than the life threatening rolly part?😆
The old lux was a beast, but will stick with the new lux, with all it's technology and comfort. Both trucks done a awesome job......
As someone with a 2001 lux (460,000km) I was rooting for the old girl but still did not waning the new girl to fail.
With that said you will always have more fun in the old lux.
Both good rigs!
LN106 on 33's, can't go wrong 👌
Bloody oath!
Solid axle all day!
Id hope 1 point atleast for the n80 🥺❤ hahah!
don't be afraid to drive it mate.. they can do anything
Old girl for the win
she is a rig
5th generation best model yet🙂
Old 1 for me simple is best and I could work on the old lux with little knowlaged
Great vid, only thing is I wish I could have heard more engine less music.. they both sounded awesome. Love the old school, but technology moves on and the new even in standard is a capable beast before upgrade. Also wonder if they were both manual, or was the new an auto.
Definitely agree mate after re watching :/ editing skills aren’t the best in this as I’m still learning, I’ll try my best to adjust and adapt and learn from you guys watching to try and create nice content to view that we all enjoy, please keep this feedback 🤙
Definitely prefer the old ones the new ones just have too much shit that can break and too many electrics
Hello. Please tell me what kind of springs are on the hilux LN106 front and rear?
Greetings Onemoreventure: Great video! I also drive a Hilux (1989 4wh.manual 5 speed), here on Tinian island, Marianas, Micronesia. Most of the dirt here on our island is deep soft sand. Also, our secondary roads have crater size potholes. I need to up tire size to 33 or 35. But first I absolutely must down gear ratio. All of the videos I have seen so far call for replacing the ring gears in both front & rear diffs, not in the final drive of the transmission. Why is that? Is that better, or easier or cheaper?
Easier, typically. However, on my 92 rodeo, it’s about the same to get a lower gear kit for the transfer case. Definitely more difficult, but usually Rodeos have such a low gearing anyway in the diffs, the tcase is the last place to go.
I'll stick with my old RN 46. Those later ones must be almost 1000kgs heavier. I like the minimalist approach, bulletproof old school diesel, wind up windows and solid axles.
Oath mate I love the old girls too, such robust rigs & built for tough conditions! To be fair I still have the new Lux and have been talking her all around australia and it’s not letting me down one bit
With the old boy here
Very NICE!! I'm glad I have a 1985 Toyota 4runner with a 5 speed and a 22re engine, but I want to convert it to a D4d. here in the States it would cost me 15 thousand dollars to have it converted. worth it or leave my truck as it is?
I'd say you're better off leaving it mate for that price!!! Might even be cheaper importing one ?
@@Onemoreventure good idea! I'll check around. I know a guy here, he imports them from Japan... but they are right hand drives.... not allowed to register them as a daily driver, has to be registered historic.
@@dundeeecroc wonder if you could pick one up cheaper enough then you'll have all the bits to swap everything over, I'd say it most likely all bolt straight up
@@Onemoreventure Good Idea, I only have 28k miles on the engine. I have a long ways to go... maybe I'll bite the bullet and just take your advice. Thanks
You can import one from the Philippines, low KM’s and left handed drive like the states
Old will outlast that hands down the ball joints are as big as the axle
i enjoyed watchin.. Subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
this makes me missing my '96 Hilux, driving a vigo now which is nice too, but not as awesome as the old one was
My friend put 80 series axles to 1KD hilux and its absolute beast
up it jack show the boys how to do it in the old luxies
Does the job man, cheers !
My 'Canopy' consists of two cheap lockboxes from marketplace xD
Simple perfection 👌
@@Onemoreventure you need to learn to weld,fabricate. i built a canopy,2.8m long,2.4m wide. $650..alloy/steel.locks,windows,rack.
Good video guys!
Cheers man! keep the GQ build coming!!
I'd like to see whislindixie do this comparison.
like the ol man and his son haha
Haha! I like that
Awesome video mate, love that old lux!
Cheers mate!! Really appreciate it, I do to can't get enough of it 💪
@@Onemoreventure no worries and that’s the way. I drive a 75 and wish I could try this track. You’re gonna hit 1k subs in no time too!
Don't think you can beat old off road but brand new HiLux with 500 newton metres you cannot go wrong factory rear diff lock just depends on your budget but no matter what as long as you getting out there doesn't matter what you drive #phils_toyotas
no,,ifs,,should let out on any trail.. i saw an fj,drop down a 1ft ledge,,rolled. there weak & death traps.. put that ,,in your sales brocheure. like the bronco, ttb front, bit better than ifs,but ford had a class action against them,as it was killing people..NO TRAVEL.!.period..toyota,,yeeehh,,lost the plot..yrs ago..
@@phantomwalker8251 yeah mate happy Whelan Toyota largest car company in the world I think they're doing ok definitely would be nice to see a solid front back in the HiLux but we don't live in a Perfect World
I have the hilux 3litre and wouldn't trade it for a new 2.8 . the electronic system in the new one makes it way to easy.
Id say oldie and Golden
My love from Greece to Perth.
Old is gold🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have equal love for both!
which rims and tires are on the 89 Hilux? they look sick mate. any tip where you get them will be awesome.
great video.
Thanks majo! I will ask Jack and get back to you!
Hey mate! Running 15x10 -52 offset alloys but not sure of brand as they dont have any markings unfortunately, and running 33x12.5x15 hankook dynapros
correct me if i’m wrong…pretty sure they are Sunraysia…they come in 3 different finish… black or white powder coated… and this…
I’m drooling over here in the US….
Thee old Hilux is just better mate, fugn mongrel built like a beast
Just got myself a 53 model... looking forward to see how she performs
Bloody oath!
Wish we could get these boys in the US
Would be sick
Those vehicles are good only that I can afford the old one
They both have decent after market but how much you spend on each one all together? If the old has been going 20 years but cost is the same, I’d rather have the 20 years of fun then the 10 years of debt on the new one
If no one bought a new one there’d never be any old ones 😉
Yes sir
What year Spring front and rear on that 89 LN106 and are you running the old push/pull steering box or upgraded to the IFS steering box? From the clips it looks like the original box, if so what did you do for the antiwrap bar on the front axle? it looked modified and beefier
Those first courses were about half as bad as some of the roads/driveways I encountered in a Tahoe doing Amazon Flex in the Appalachian mountains.
What roof racks do you have on the 106?
Was this the Bridle track up near Mundaring?
defiantly the luxy mine just clicked over 500000kms and healthy as!
Very nice Video, both are good. Can anyone tell me, which name the Songs at the End is?
Hey mate I'll find out the song for you this afternoon!
Can't beat the reliability of an old leafy hilux
Shes a bloody beast of a thing! We might have a front locker video happening soon !
I'll happily take the old model Hilux. More reliable, better off road, better made quality wise, looks much better. The new ones are just no where near as good as the old models. Just a shame Toyota doesn't still make them.
Yet they decided to keep the 79’s
The old school hilux did it easier, but more of a compromise for on road.
The old lux performed better. Nothing beats a good old fashion solid rear and front axles.
are those tyres reversed on the old lux cause white lettering on the inside?
Alot of tyres now do white one side black the other so people can choose between the 2 colours thats all, they don't have a rotation direction
I would love to own an older yota like this
Things a beast
good video. showing my support by commenting.
Thanks Leo! You're a legend
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah, yeah.... ahhh yeah. Right yeah.
Hahaha so good 🤣🤣
Is the N80 an auto or manual ?
Manual 🤞
What inch mud tyres is the 89 lux running
Y'all are so lucky to get 4 door trucks. We get the shitty ones here in the US
My grandfather gave he's 1993 toyota Hilux 22R to my dad in 1997 he drove it for 20 years straight and in 2017 he gave it to me and in 7 years she's never let me down, my grandfather and dad aren't around anymore so it makes it all the more funny when my grandfather said it will outlive us all to my dad, I've got 34 on the clock and she has 718k so she's got a chance.
Does the 95 model have solid axel?
It would be cool it they made an old 80s look truck in 2020
Great vid, but please turn off the music! Hearing what the truck is doing is a big part of it!
Fark yeah ln106, always, new hiliux's are crap compared to the oldies.
appreciate ur work👍❤️.from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Legend ❤
Why ffs Toyota doesn't use front solid axles anymore. I don't want to buy crappy fiat wrangler or gladiator.......
Can someone let me know where this place is please
