  • Today i have something a little different for you!
You’ve seen it in the background of many of my videos and a lot of you have asked about it, so here it is…meet my faithful daily truck - a MK5 Toyota Hilux!
I’ve owned this truck for years having bought it in average condition. After a few years of service my old Toyota succumbed to that classic Toyota nemesis - RUST!
I couldn’t bring myself to give up and say goodbye to my faithful workhorse so i set about restoring it!
What you see today is the outcome of the blood, sweat and tears of that restoration.
I use this truck everyday for all manner of jobs and it is still as strong and willing today as it ever was.
Here are the top 10 things that i love about my Toyota Hilux…Enjoy!

I really like that I have the back closed, so I can use it as a trunk, as I probably do not carry stuff heavy and high as you do.

Greetings @JohnnyGetsCash: I drive a Hilux also, 1989 4wd. 5-speed manual. I also need to upsize my tires to 33" because on Tinian, the tropical Pacific island where I live, the soil is mostly deep, soft sand and our secondary roads have potholes the size of bomb craters. BUT! Before increasing tire diameter, I MUST lower the gear ratio. All the videos I have found on the subject call for replacing the ring gears in both front and rear diffs rather than installing reduction gears in the transmission. Why is that? Is it better? easier? cheaper?

In honesty, the rear tub was probably the hardest replacement part to source! I spent countless hours trawling through various websites, forums etc looking for a breaker vehicle with a clean tub (which, as you can imagine is pretty much an impossible task as the tub always gets a hard life on these trucks - that's if it hasn't rusted away first). In the end i found a breaker in wales with a truck that'd had a loadliner fitted from new which had lead a seemingly easy life. It was a challenge but i got there. Hopefully you will too. Good luck with your search.

Thanks! She may be an old commercial spec, but there's something about the truck. I wanted to keep it fresh and in daily use so it was worth the effort!
Regarding tray backs; This is where people ditch the tub altogether and fabricate a custom framework / platform (generally flat) onto the rear chassis. In my opinion, this doesn't look as good as a proper tub, but in fairness it is sometimes more useful depending on what the owner does for a living etc, plus with tubs getting harder to find, people often don't have the choice!

Yeh mine have been shot in body colour (I resprayed the whole truck in 'super white' a couple of years ago). Not too hard but it is what I do so maybe not the best gauge to use! If you're ensure though you could also coat them in raptor paint / bed liner stuff as it's easy to get a uniform finish and it'll make them very hard wearing!

I had a Toyota like this, reliable? You must be joking. Bought it new three days after I took delivery it got stuck and did so almost 170 times the first year I had it. At less than 80K kilometres the brakes failed; the vehicle wouldn't stop. Before that the bearings in the transfer box had to be replaced etc. This vehicle was meticulously serviced ever 5K kilometres. So much for Toyota's reliability.

I've got to say that's the first time I've heard someone suggest that a Hilux is unreliable! I guess yours was the exception to the rule. I genuinely cannot fault my truck, its never let me down at all, in any way and I can only base my opinion on personal experience!
