I find it fascinating how this lady is just doing her thing, she's religious, she's bored and doodling. Well she's from india and india is a really shitty place she probably has a family to feed and there are probably not many ways she can get money so idk she scams people
People find it very easy to make excuses for things that are to their own benefit or that have been accepted by their peer group. Commonly they would think of their victims as not really people and compartmentalise them in a category that isn't deserving of empathy. We tend to think of criminals and such as nazi concentration camp guards as being monsters and psychopaths, but if you look into it they often turn out to be quite normal people with their families and friends, outside of the atrocities they commit. We, humans, evolved in small tribes, where loyalty within the tribe was all important, but so was grabbing stuff and competing with everyone else. So it isn't hard to understand the origin of this kind of behaviour.

When I am told my computer has a virus I get very worried and flustered. I ask if I need to get my wife and children to the hospital or can we get vaccinated. At this point I am usually handed off to another "more skilled" operator. After a half hour of wasting their time I tell them that I am not reading the message they say should be on my screen. It says that there is a hacker and a scam artist trying to rob me. They do tend to get upset about this. I then tell them that I am a programmer and I only use MAC at home. "What you can do is switch the computer off and leave it for two hours, after two hours you can start the computer back on again it will be fine". I couldn't hide my laughter at that.
Usually I would object to referring lying as disgusting, but considering the scammers on the phone sicken me with their consistent lying, telling more and more as the conversation progresses, I've clearly got nothing to object to. Their characters are so weak, they can't even stand up for what they're doing, being put in their position where its neutrally understood that the scam baiter knows everything and they still don't give in, thats not strong, thats weak, and whats even dirtier is it shows their understanding and belief that what they are doing is wrong. Its funny 'cause these people are probably religious, do you think they accept and embrace the belief that they are going to hell, or are they even deeper in the lies they tell themselves than any lies they ever tell their "customers" or scam baiters.
I think, at least in this case, they still believed the person was some rube. Remember, he was impersonating someone they successfully scammed. So they figured they could imply the person he talked to was wrong. I mean, you figure they could have caught on when all of sudden he knows wtf hes talking about.
Well to be honest, I figure they'd have the decency to not scam people in the first place, but that's mostly because I actually CARE about other people. I already don't understand how scammers can live with themselves, but this one was particularly despicable. Insisting to the very end that it was legitimate, despite knowing the "customer" has info on their operation. That is a whole new level of low. They didn't even have the humanity to say "yes it's a scam and you're not getting your money back ever".
I feel so tense whenever you confront these scammers. I'm so non-confrontational its too extreme. Though there's also a thrill of you helping victims out & confronting the scammers. But still i'm so tense. (also technology is complicated, incomprehensible & scary)
when you get that way, force yourself to breathe deeply a few times, and force yourself to move. kick your legs, move your arms, or turn your head a few times. this should break the fright response of freezing, and staying quiet. Adrenalin response control can be learnt. :) hope this helps!
I'm very annoyed at someone being called out for every one of their lies, and being PROVEN to be wrong, only to keep lying. It feels like a shallow victory when people don't admit and accept their own wrongdoings.
Thanks for adding "shadow victory" to my vocabulary. That's the perfect description and helps me to explain why I get annoyed in these types of situations. Sometimes it's just satisfying to let a lier know you know, even if they don't admit it. Failure to come clean just helps you too diagnose whether they have any morality or qualms left.

I find it fascinating how this lady is just doing her thing, she's religious, she's bored and doodling. I don't feel bad for her for you doing this to her, of course, but the psychology of criminals is always something I find interesting. How does she reconcile her morality with what she's doing? It would be fun to have a frank conversation with her where she didn't feel the need to lie.
Well she's from india and india is a really shitty place she probably has a family to feed and there are probably not many ways she can get money so idk she scams people
Naked Snakey she also is likely bought into the lie that westerns are all filthy rich and the money she’s taking is pennies
It's gradual desensitisation to such acts. Especially common in societies where living conditions are shit. Everyone fends for themselves.
isn't that the hypocrisy faced by most if not all religious people though?

When they call I let them know my computer is off and I need to start it. After awhile they ask if it is on yet. I let them know that my computer is running Win3.1 so it takes awhile, (Win 3.1 not internet capable if I remember properly), I say the same when they ask if I am on the internet yet, and many other times. They begin to swear at me so I disconnect as I get irritated with those who are rude, impolite and thieves.

Agree. I wanted Jim to say it.
This was absolutely disgusting. The relentless lying. "How can I type on your computer?" Yes, Nimmi, how did you type "dir/s" in the first place?

I think it's pathological - at a certain point, I have to wonder if they believe their own lies.
