- If you don't pay attention to search engine results, you might just end up on a 'bank' login page which tells you to call their security department. This video goes behind the scenes and you'll see the scammers who are pretending to be your bank and how they rob you in broad daylight from thousands of miles away.

A lot of the hacking in Jim Browning's videos seem very dubious, especially when he "hacks an entire call centre and it's CCTV system. It seems like it's just there for sensational purposes. You don't even see the actual persons face, which makes it kind of pointless in the first place. A lot of these intercepted calls which are with third party victims don't feel authentic to me. At least these videos are educational of what these criminals can get up to.

Props to Citibank for being onto the scam so quickly and trying to warn their customer. It's too sad when victims don't believe the good guys tho....

Small piece of advice for when they mistrust you, Jim. Tell them to go to their purse/wallet, and call the number written on the back of their banking card. Even if they don't believe you when you tell them they are being scammed, they will at least know the true number they should be calling.
And by the time they get through the bank auto attendants and get off hold they'll be living under a bridge

The average Indian citizen HATES these people, because they're awful people who make their country look bad.
The should not be jailed. They should be publicly executed.
Remember, no bank will ever ask for remote access to your pc or ask for passwords or text varification codes. This should be a red flag straight away but people still fall for it. Great work as always Jim.

Almost. I worked for a bank doing tech support. I would almost daily do remote access on customer PCs. For some people that was the only way to help, since telling them how to solve a problem over the phone was impossible. Ofcourse, we didnt ever ask for passwords, and the people was calling us on a number provided on the legit site. We never did outgoing calls. Also, to make sure we spoke with the owner of the accounts, we would ask the caller questions only they could know. Like where they last used their debet card, how much money is it in one particular accound etc.
@@frantssagmyr-truksvik6140 I regularily remind my elderly mother and father about these things...Not least, when i read in the paper that there is a new scam around.
I told my mother, who is the one doing online banking and stuff, that if she is contacted by anyone from the bank and it is not her contact person in the bank to tell them that she will hang up, and call the bank main number and ask for the persons name, and then they can talk.
Also, if she received mail or calls that she is unsure about, she is to say to the person on the phone "I will have my son call you back, he handles all of this for me" and mails i check if they seem iffy.
That was just so sad when his own bank called him and he didn't believe them. Watching these videos have made me much more aware of what to watch out for. Thank you
A few weeks ago, Kitboga was on a call with what we all thought were foreign scammers pretending to be the bank (Wells Fargo, I think). He and the viewers were not shocked when they asked him for his full social security number, debit card number, and other personal information, yet as the call progressed it started to seem more and more like it was really the bank. He hung up and called the real bank, who confirmed the first number he called was real and that the agent was not breaking any bank rules by asking for all of the information. It was mind blowing, and makes me worry that some of these scams work because the legit banks don’t consistently follow the “we’ll never ask you for this information” rules.

Exactly. I’ve talked with someone from my bank on the phone and they always ask me for a lot of information like social security number and date of birth and complete address. They’ve even asked for my mother’s maiden name and I had to remember what security questions I picked and answered
It’s always nerve wracking when you are requested to send over your critical information over the phone such as your SSN. Like what you said, there are various legit banks that will ask for that information for security purposes. I had to do it for federal agencies such as the Department of the Treasury.
My Grandma just got scammed the other day and my family were real quick to change her bank account passwords, thankfully. After that incident, it made me more motivated to watch TH-camrs like you and Kitboga 😄

Check out Scambaiter also. I enjoy his content because he finds out as much about the scammer as he can (hella personal info, bank details, addresses) and scares tf out of scammers. Oh, and he infects their computers with viruses.
That is a bad feeling they got my dad for 10k usd he has dementia I live with him now and they call him about 10 times a day and I answer the calls now they don't like me

The way Jim gets access to all of their computers and personal info is utterly horrifying. Thank God he’s on our side.
He can't really hack into any computer he wants. In this case he had inside help but in other cases the he usually lets scammers get connected to his computer (because this is how the scam works) and then he reverses the connection and hacks into the scammer computer. Requiring to have remote access is the week point of the scam which makes scammers vulnerable.

@@dd462, what do you mean 'lol'? It's not funny. Age is not the only factor when it comes to vulnerability. There are loads of different factors such as knowledge that makes you vulnerable. You could be around 30 or even younger and get scammed.

Amen; I was thinking the same thing, esp. when they accept money to place certain ads at the top of the page.

I work for a big national bank in the US as a customer service agent and you’d be surprised how many calls we get from people who have been scammed or attempted phishing calls we get daily.
Used to work for a big UK bank 12 years ago, and it was relentless then - so I dread to think how it is now!!

Is it helpful to report these scams to your bank? I feel like it's futile but I'd love to be wrong... I've been getting text scams a lot lately and it'd be nice to be able to report them :/
@@ptanyuh If it is a scam text pretending to be the bank then also 100% yes report it. Most banks will have a number or email you can forward the message onto.
If it is a generic message then honestly, no. There isn’t anything we can do about them and we’ll likely already be aware of it. If you have suffered from it then yes 100% raise it with the banks fraud teams. They do record the details of common occurrences… but it’s very hard to us to action anything when there isn’t going to be a case opened.
To be fair, having people come up to your door and explain that there's a scam going on right now and they're here to help, but you have to hurry, is pretty unbelievable and sounds more like a scam than the actual scam.
But they never asked for any accounts or passwords. I think their approach was honest and sincere. And at any moment they could have brought up photos of account id’s and pw’s. She was just annoyed by them being on their property with a camera guy and just wanted them gone. They didn’t do anything wrong. But she didn’t do anything wrong as I would have told them to get off my property as well, especially being a small elderly woman if nobody was home with me. She was scared. But they were honest. No judgement on either party in my opinion.

You don’t think somebody showing up at your property or telling you personal information over the phone is more suspicious? That’s like “I’m a hacker and I know where you live” type of stuff. But what can they do, really? It find it hard to think of a scam warning that isn’t scary.

I think maybe a good message would be “I am a scam investigator and we’ve found you on one of their lists. If you are on the phone with an employee, please hang up and call the number from their website’s ‘contact us’ to make sure it’s the real deal. If they asked to see your computer, please uninstall the software that gives them access and shut down your computer all the way by holding the power button. Scammers can try to keep connecting to your computer otherwise.”
If it’s less direct and you don’t reveal that you know they’re currently being scammed, it might be less creepy and maybe they’ll be more trusting. I don’t know. Or maybe they can ask, “are you on the phone with an employee?” and then give the security advice after they say yes.

Could it have been worse? Yes. I don’t know what you’re getting at. I see both sides and what happened happened. End of story. I always tell people to ONLY call the number that is listed on their bank card, never reveal any information over the phone, and if in any doubt go to the local bank branch and explain everything there, not to a person on the phone.
Sadly people's pride and hubris will often be their end...
I had called the number on the back of my son's debit card to activate. It was sent in the mail after we set up his accnt. He's a minor but had started his 1st job, so I was a co-signer for his accnt. I was suspicious once I was having problems understanding his accent for one. THEN he wanted info on MY bank accnt -> which was at a completely different bank! I shook my head at my son n hung up. We went into the bank the next business day. I was just confused given it was the number on the back of the card! ??
Don't call anyone, don't talk to anyone who calls you about this nonsense. It literally takes SO MUCH effort and denial to get scammed than it does to just ignore these things.
If the government was after you they wouldn't ask request anything, they would simply take your money, worst case scenario is cops will show up at your doorstep, and they'll need a warrant to arrest you or search your residence. You have rights, basic ones, like the right to a day in court and representation. How do people spend 60 70 80 years on this planet without knowing these things?

Jim, I have been recommending your channel to family and friends for a couple of years now. It actually helped My cousin when she received a call from someone asking her to download some software, claiming to be from her bank. She immediately hung up, and ever turned off her computer. That wasn't necessary, but she thought "better safe than sorry!" Veiwing your videos made her very aware of scammers. Thank for all the good work!

I just cannot fathom the lack of judgement present in a lot of people - someone telling you to turn your PC off, that you're being scammed, and your response is to... stick by the scammers who are a split second from calling you a dickhead? Especially when the one that is easily understandable says to stop what you are doing or else you will be scammed.

@@JohnDoe-bd5sz The scammers have the psychological advantage. It's easier to convince people that they're doing something right, than to convince that they're doing something wrong or being fooled. The latter came after the first too. I can agree with your logic, however. It's just that in the moment, we sometimes go by gut feeling and not logic. Even Jim Browning himself got scammed once.

They would not give the Code if they know for what its for
@@ForumcoldiArchon I agree...That message with the security code should have started "This code authorizes the transfer of $30.000" this message is NOT to be read back to anyone, and is only to be entered by you, and only if you initiated this transaction.
If they changed the message to read that, those scammers would not even try to scam him, because they would know that he would be warned.
All banks in the country i live in already do that. They make it really clear when setting up your account that if ever something goes wrong you call them using a set number or go directly through they phone app and click "call" because that way all they will ask is your full name and address to verify this shit is real.
Most banks, and other companies that use these systems do warn people. Unfortunately, it's easy to ignore them, especially when these people already think they're talking to a bank agent.
As a caretaker for my 87 year old grandfather, these subhuman criminals can go back to Hell where they came from. Huge kudos to Jaani for not only changing his ways but actively fighting back against scammers. The gall of that Citibank piece of work convincing his victim that the legit Citibank was the fraud.

If you dial a number and someone with a thick indian accent answers, odds are you're getting scammed.
I tell my students as soon as you get an unknown call, and it's an Indian, hang up straight away and block the number.

When I was 18, I went to Bolivia with my now ex and some of her family. I never posted anything about it cause I’m not too big on posting to social media, but she posted all about it and her family did too. Well about 3 days into being there, my grandmother apparently got a call saying that they had taken me hostage, had my name, her name, some of the other peoples names. She said if it weren’t for the daily email updates she got, she would have 100% believed it. That shit is scary man, but luckily my grandmother was a stubborn old German lady. Miss ya grandma ❤️

I work for a fraud department. Sometimes we talk to fraudsters and call the actual person to verify who it is. If the actual person is also on the line with the fraudster we tell the person to hang up with everyone and call the number on the back of their card to make sure it is the right people.
I had a work call recently from a Scottish male claiming to be from our company bank, stating that we had a transaction going out that was suspicious so they’d stopped it and wanted to give me a reference number for the ‘anti fraud team’ - I said well that’s not us and hung up. Then another number rang, now a male with an English accent claiming to be from this anti fraud team asking me for the reference, saying he was going to help… I told him ‘you’ll want some bank details no doubt’. I questioned him on why, if this was a matter to do with the company accounts, our account manager at the bank hadn’t emailed us directly? He stopped and was sort of like ‘erm, well yeah that’s true’ and hung up! But it was the first scam call I’ve ever had in the UK from someone also in the UK and not a call centre. It sounded very genuine tbh and I can see how they must easily trick some people when panic kicks in. Scammers are such Scum. Glad there are videos like Jim’s, it makes you more aware and reminds me, if in doubt hang up any call and turn everything off!

I've watched enough of real baiters over the past ten years and from my own calls I get, to know that he fabricates everything he has done. Also he's worked for BBC, everything is too over produced. It's not legit.

We should really have courses for people who don't know how to use the internet specifically for the older generation so stuff like this doesn't happen.
I'm sure there are, at least in the USA. But they probably have to pay, and many older people have trouble moving and may not be able to drive to the place plus with the pandemic older people especially have to stay in their homes.
I think maybe they should have tablets or cellphones instead of a computer they don't know how to use. Plus it's harder for scammers to access these devices with remote control.

I'm 65, everyone in my age group knows how to use the internet. My 84 year old mother knows how to use the internet. The problem isn't the internet, nor is it limited to us old folks. If we check our email, our text messages, or answer the phone, and some legitimate company we do business with seems to be contacting us, we might fall for the scam. Even Jim Browning fell for one.
Or maybe let old people do banking the old fashioned way.
Here, the problem is that they forced everyone to use digital signature, online banking and so on.
So even old people, people that are not the brightest and basically people that did not want to, nor should, do online stuff like that, is forced because it is more convenient for banks and the government.
Ridiculous. Whole vulnerable adults are well...more vulnerable, anyone can fall victim. The desire to educate is important but courses and requirements and hamstringing is not a solution.
Boyfriend just almost got scammed by a fake message from Monzo, on the verification code number. Very scary, but noticed it was a scam not the same official number. Glad you are making these videos to make people aware. Keep it up!

Absolutely. This group had just 3 people. I noticed during lockdown, that a lot more scams were happening from home addresses.
Personally I've noticed quite the uptick in situations where a male scammer will hand the phone to a female scammer in the same room to speak to more.... emotional victims... since 2019. It's my belief that this is because small time scammers are doing it right from home which means they can hand off to their wives or even daughters or little sisters -- they sound younger and younger lately. 😕 usually the bigger call centers are all men, or very few women.
I remember reading an article some years back wherein a Police detective was being interviewed, he said similar things regarding drug dealers and gangsters. This was 10 or 15 years ago, and he said that, more and more they were seeing a shift away from traditional 'crime families' and toward much smaller setups wherein it was one or two criminals and more often than not, a lone drug dealer buying their supplies from someone and then selling them entirely on their own.

If a person sounds foreign, keeps saying "Do one thing" many times & the phone call sounds really bad the person will be a scammer. Plus NO institute will ask you to download remote control software.
I got a call on 4th February 2022, it was a Visa Card scammer saying an authorised purchase of $600 was made on my card. I live in the UK where the denomination is in GB Pounds not US Dollars.

A scammer using the wrong thing for the would-be victim's country reminded me, many years ago my great-aunt got an email in English doing the infamous stranded US soldier scam. (Basically, where somebody claiming to be a US soldier says they're stranded in a foreign country and need $$$...because apparently my country's massive military budget can't afford helping a stranded soldier get home or to wherever they're stationed.)
My great-aunt was a Hungarian woman living in Budapest, and didn't speak a word of English.
It's pretty simple: anytime you hear a indian voice on the phone, hang up

I mean, how hard is it to catch these scammers, Jim basically delivers evidence and personal details on the scammers. All the police in India has to do is drive to the address and arrest the scammer.
I think most of the police force is doing their absolute best protecting people from physical harm. And so vigilantes like Jim and Kitboga are the internet super heroes of our world. Taking the good fight where the law struggle to keep up.

Thank you for these videos. I used to work for a financial institution and part of my job was seeing things like this regularly. It was the worst part of my job and I'm glad that there are people out there trying to help those who are vulnerable.

It's so disappointing how people just don't think things through. Most bank 2FA say "DO NOT SHARE THIS CODE WITH ANYONE" and it should be common practice to never download remote access software or share passwords over the phone.

The best bits to me are always Jim's warning calls. I can imagine the confusion of the receivers, but whenever they succeed they are very fulfilling.
On the flipside, it's very infuriating when the person Jim is trying to save gets so arrogant and dismisses him. Almost like they're asking to be scammed. Feels like they deserve it.

When I saw the scammer cam in the corner all I could think of is a scammer speedrun.
The car warranty and student loan refinancing scams are super common. I get at least 1 a day of each. The social security scams and Amazon refund scams are thankfully less common these days.
I don't get calls but I get so many emails, it's so annoying.
I sometimes call them back and give them a piece of my mind. I tell them that they are being worthless, parasitic shitbags and that they need to do something worthwhile with their lives. They usually just hang up on me lmao

6:40 Regarding Thai bank accounts, it's now a huge problem here in Thailand too. Although it's illegal, there's a huge amount of people who allow to open their bank account and sell the account to the scammer for ~$30 along with their sim card (for the bank application's credential). I see the news that the account is used by a domestic scamming scheme but here's the first time I heard that it was also used with the overseas one too!
I, once in a while, also encounter a scammer who pretends to be a DHL or FexEx agent, tell me that I send illegal stuff to China, and tried to lure me to wire my money to the mule account I mentioned above.
Dad called me over, saying he was getting pop ups and stuff and if he should call the number. There was that annoying 'security alert, call us at -----' blaring out. Took me a few minutes to realise it was caused by him typing in b&m in Google, the first result being a slightly misspelled dud site.
It's good that I'm still 17 and living with my elderly parents to advise them on stuff like this. Can't always be there (pretty sure my Dad's fb account got compromised by clicking a link in a message last week) but I'm trying my best to let them know of common tactics. Thanks as always, Jim. I couldn't bear to see these scumbags steal from their bank accounts.

I was woken yesterday by a scam call.
As it was my day off, I got comfy and strapped in. Put on my daft old codger character and wasted their time. Strung them along for 58minutes and they couldn't even get me passed the 'windows key-R' stage.
As they seemed intrested in my (fictitious) bank statement balance, I assume it would have been the refund scam.
What? Did they really waste close to an hour just to make you understand the windows+R keys? How did you play that along for such a long time on such a small thing?

Each scammer got frustrated and passed my on to someone else, where I just ran the whole thing again.

I received my first MS-Support call last week! Immediately had to think of your channel! I stalled them for about 10 Minutes so at least they couldn't scam people during this time.
