@@swordguy1243 yeah.... no... Christianity spread with a lot of violence throughout Europe, the Inquisition started in the 13th century, but befor that often whole tribes were slaughtered for not bowing diwn befor the Christian rulership. Then there were the Crusades, the Witchhunts, the religious war of the reformation, the Conquests of India, Africa and America and several brutal genozidal attacks because the natives refused to convert, then there were and still are several Christian terrorgroups in America and Africa, there was a religious conflict in Ireland. The Nazis were mostly Christians and believed in a certain interpretation of scripture and Hitler as a Messianic figure, not to mention that the two major warmongering superpiwers of the Planet are dominated by Christians.

@@swordguy1243 The Inquisition killed a lot of people in the 15th and 16th centuries as well.
It's also worth noting cristians were also far more brutal than muslims preceding that. The wrechage from the capture of Constantinople in 1204 by the fourth crusade was worse than the capture by muslims in 1453. This is despite the city being captured from Christian rulers both times.
Theres also how followers of each religion treated third parties; Jews regularly fled Christiandom for places led by muslims because it was so much safer. As an example, Ladino first developed in the iberian peninsula, but all surviving Ladino-speaking communities are in places that belonged to the Ottoman empire.

I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and been disfellowshipped twice. First when I was 17 and lost my virginity , I was told I had to marry him if I wanted to continue the relationship and they questioned absolutely everything I had done as a minor. Did I have oral? Where? how many times? etc. I came back because of my parents, I missed them. I wasn't allowed to even have dinner with them . Three years later I divorced the guy I was with because he was extremely abusive and controlling. He made me quit college. And all the "Elders" had to say was that many other "sisters" have remained loyal to their spouses and by their side regardless of the abuse and eventually he would change with their help and guidance. That was in 2014 and I never went back. As a mom I could never do that to my children.

@@wireboar7321 Well don't take my word for it, but I think it's mostly an issue of dialect. Feminism was first coined as a term for the rights of women since they were indisputably worse off than men back then. But if I understand correctly, as women gained more and more rights, a lot of them started to realize that the negative effects of gender roles went both ways in society, like how boys locked away their feelings or commit suicide more often. And since feminists were basically already fighting for gender equality, they combined with their allies and strove to improve the condition for everyone since (...except for the misandrists of course but just flip them off and call it a day, they don't matter). So while feminism is still definitely predominantly for women, there's also a large push for men to do whatever they want. Language is a weird thing, no?

The Latter Day Saints don't really feel like a cult until you join BYU. Leaving the university is actually several times harder than leaving the actual church, and even on your mission, the members have actually been granted to talk to family members more and a lot of them I know talk to their friends home who all seem to be members. However, leaving the church is a very easy task and questioning seems to be encouraged all until and if you enroll into BYU, which a lot of members I know are completely against. Still could be a cult socially and economically, but not to its actual members

As an Ex-Mormon, I thought I would point out some mistakes/misconceptions about Mormons that were shared in your vid:
    1. The LDS church does prohibit intoxicants like Alcohol, tea, and coffee; however, there is no rule against caffeine. A few individuals in the church might say we can't drink caffeine (like my aunt who prides herself on not drinking it), but it isn't a rule.
    2. Mormon missionaries can speak to their families. When I was a missionary 3+ years ago, we were only allowed to email them once a week, and we could call home during a few holidays every year (Christmas and Mother's Day). Recently that rule has been changed, and missionaries have much more freedom to be able to talk to their families. I don't know the specifics of when they can call since I have not been an active member for about a year, but I know it's not nearly as strict now.
    3. As far as guilting members into staying, it depends. Doctrine says that members should be loving and open with members who are struggling with the faith. That being said, members are much kinder to inactive members who haven't been to church in a long time, compared to members who are actively going to church each week but not living like a member (i.e. drinking, premarital sex).
I'd agree that the LDS church is much more powerful than the JW's and most of the others, but honestly Mormons are more accepting and open to people with differing beliefs, and act much less creepy than JW's. Most Mormons I've met are accepting of LGB individuals, even though the church has taken a stance against it. Hell, I know a couple guys in the church that are openly gay (don't ask me why they stay when the leadership thinks they are sinners).
All-in-all, most Mormons don't act different than anyone else, and are often very kind people. The LDS church and it's leadership on the other hand are messed up in my opinion, and I don't much care for the organization.

I too was raised LDS. My experience must have been different from yours because, as you know, the Word of Wisdom that prohibits alcohol also prohibits hot drinks, which I was taught was Joseph Smith's way of saying no caffeine because all the hot drinks back then had caffeine. You are correct about 2, I was happy when the church started allowing missionaries to call home once in a while. But my experience with your point on 3 is the exact opposite. I was kicked out of my house for arguing with my dad about mormonism for 3 hours one night. In America, 20% to 40% of homeless teenagers are LGBT, while in Utah, it is 50%-60%. I used to volunteer at a homeless teenager philanthropy in Utah on a regular basis and LGBT acceptance was a major part of their mission. Utah also has the highest rate of teenage depression, 15% higher than any other state. It also has one of the highest rates of teenage suicide, over 3x higher than the state I just moved to from Utah this year, California. A typical thanksgiving with my Mormon family in Utah would include such opinions as 'why would you ever have a funeral for someone that isn't religious'. When I heard that, I simply stated that when I die, shoot my body over the Grand Canyon using a catapult and left. There is definitely varying degrees of cult like behaviour amongst the members, I find that the Mormons here in California are much more accepting of other people than the ones I left behind in Utah.

    • @Gkowi
      @Gkowi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@doubleirishdutchsandwich4740 And the hot drinks thing is why coffee and tea are not allowed. My family drinks a lot of mtn dew and Pepsi, and plenty of other Mormons I know drink soda and energy drinks, just not coffee/tea.
As far as 3 goes, it is very much individuals and their opinions, and in recent years many people have been changing. For example, I grew up in CA (I'm in Utah now) when Prop 8 got passed. As a kid, I went with some of my family and held signs saying "Yes on 8" on a street corner. This is something my dad wanted to do as he very much disagreed with same-sex marriage. However, today he is very pro-LGBT and is actually the one that helped change my mind and be supportive of same-sex marriage. Perhaps my experience was different here because though both sides of my family are LDS, my dad's side (and my immediate family) never acted like "Molly Mormons". We had fairly crude humor, and we didn't take everything the church leadership said at face value.
I'm sure that what you said about your experiences is true, but I'm just saying that much of Mormon culture is changing for the better. I personally have never met anyone that is outright hateful of LGBT individuals or has kicked their kid out of the house for being LGBT, though obviously it happens. Thing is I'm sure the stats would be fairly similar if Utah was dominated by any other strict Abrahamic religion.
I'm sorry that you have family that acts so awful. You would think people who believe in Christ would act more "Christlike".
Just like any religion though, people like to pick and choose doctrine that best suits them. Of course we only know our own experiences, and some of what I shared about doctrine are things I studied on my mission.
Regardless, I'm happy to be out of the church.

@@Gkowi Yeah me too. Happy to be done with it. I think the hardest thing about leaving is having no community and not knowing what is up from down. The only people I knew and hung out with were Mormon and everything I was taught was from them, no external influence, but I still came to the conclusion that it was astronomically more likely that JS lied than that he was visited by a native american that died several hundred years prior. People lie everyday and 100,000 books are written every year and I have never seen a native american come back to life. Ugh. I left Utah less than a year ago but was an active member of the Postmormon community on meetup when I was there. We would meet up on the weekend at board game stores and coffee shops to hang out. @@doubleirishdutchsandwich4740 Glad to hear you are in a better place. Funny thing is growing up in CA as Mormon, life was really hard since I was one of maybe 3 Mormon kids at my school, and I got bullied a lot for being different. Moving to Utah was a good change for the reason you said, having a community. Now that I left, it is difficult. I'm not "openly" a non-member yet, because I don't want people to try to bring me back into the fold, but my family knows I don't believe as well as some friends. I've never heard of the postmormon community, so maybe I'll check that out. If it wasn't for the rest of my family wanting to stay in Utah, I would be moved by now. Might leave the state in the next couple years, we will see.
I agree with you on the JS thing. I mean, plenty of people today are so called psychics, prophets, or claim to perform miracles yet most people recognize them for who they are: con-men. That's why I don't believe in Christianity as a whole. If these same prophets from the Bible were alive today, we could see how much BS they were spewing out.

The LDS church is more and more run like a business. It would be silly to discriminate against prospective clients and anyone can become a tithing-paying member. In many activities, non-members get preferential treatment. Bishops provide financial and other assistance to non-members in their area. The damage is mostly psychological, once you're inside. Conferences, local and church-wide will impress upon you the all-important need to follow, pray and obey, as well as doubt your doubts. Jesus said: "Love God and love thy neighbor as thyself" but Mormons break this admonition into endless commandments, rules, rituals, callings, assignments and responsibilities which will drive crazy anyone who sincerely attempts to abide by all of them. That's the core of it's cult-like nature. Sure beliefs are wacky, but to me the wackiest belief of all is the existence of the biblical god.

    Two corrections on Mormonism:
14:07 The 15-16 million number is only what the church claims. It is actually closer to 5 million active members. The reason is the Mormon church is simply counting everyone they baptized, regardless if they stay in the religion or not. I am an atheist and the Mormon church still counts me as a 'member'.

I don't know about the caffeine thing but another commenter said that the rules on talking to family members durring missions was changed relitively resentently so that might be a newer thing but Mormonism isn't high on the list because of that.
it's high because they have a relitively high population, money, and political power. They arn't on high the list because they are the most cultlike but because of how much power they have. It's partually because their similarities to a cult are relatively low that they can even have the power that they do since cults require an extrem amount of control and the more members they have the harder it is for them to actually keep up that control.
I think that the people going around calling every person who tries to make a correction a cultist are annoying. Cultist has a usefull meaning (the bite model) and shouldn't be used as a cheap off hand insult.

I'm LDS and honestly I mostly agree with your placing of the church. While I don't really like it being called a cult, I can definitely see why many consider it as one.
I would at the very least like to mention that in your section on Mormonism, you say that missionaries can't even speak to their families while on their trip, which is incorrect. My sister had just been on her mission for the last year and a half, and she was given one day a week (called a P-day) to email all of her friends and family, post on Facebook, and often called our mom to tell her everything she did that week.
Also, with the magic undies, I've never heard the church or a single member mention them, though I do know they exist. It almost feels like it's a topic they don't really want to talk about much.
Everything else though I agree on, high population with high growth rate, extreme wealth (most wealthy church on earth, $100 billion saved), most entrapment is just minor shaming, and a pretty strong grip on our politics.

You didn't quite get the whole picture of the political maneuvering and financial trickery of the haredim in the video, they actually have a lot more money than one would think because of several factors.
There is a law in israel that was made to encourage families having more children a long time ago, it was revised a bit since and basically it says that for each child a family has past 2 they receive a certain amount of money per child, the amount is greater for each child, this law doesn't seem at all suspicious until you take notice that the group with the highest birthrate that is eligible for that money by the law's conditions is the haredim.
There is a lot of money that reaches their community through government funding for their own school system and various services, their community in general earns more money than you'd suspect but most of it goes to the rabis either through socially encouraged donations and fees or through other services they provide as well as direct government funding.
They have another tool that allows them a great advantage. When one person from the community wants to open some kind of business he will ask for the rabi's blessing, in addition to the fee the rabi will set certain conditions for the business such as where it is located, he will then provide a loan (which according to community laws will have an interest rate of 0) and will have all of his followers approach that business if they have need of that service instead of any competitor (the business owner also must offer a discounted price for community members). The financial and social backing of members is very large and the risk of alienation is far greater than it would seem because of it.

Some years ago in Iowa, some Amish teenagers vandalized a vacant farm house. The kids were sentenced to 30 days in jail. They got to sleep in, watch TV and play basketball. When their parents found out how soft their treatment was, they asked the Judge to send the kids home. The Judge agreed and did so. Being at home was much more punishing than jail.

They haven't tried to convince me about their religion (yet?). I'd like to smoke a blunt with them. They're that polite and relaxed, which I respect heavily. If they talk to me about their religion, I will 100% listen to them and be cordial because of their personality.

Maybe it’s just Canadian Mormonism and the fact that our population isn’t dense but, I left the church freely and they all know I don’t believe yet they still associate with me. Missionaries are supposed to be super strict, it’s kinda like priests in most religions. The whole underwear thing I never really got though.
Also I 100% realize that Mormonism doesn’t any truth behind it and as a result I am atheist.
Again I’m speaking from what I know but from experience, they invite you to a lot of events but the less religious families just don’t get invited to the more religious events or stuff like giving to charity. They do however always invite us and anyone from the community to a lot of their activities like corn busts and potlucks.
