MrsRandomMadeMeDoIt yes drop the coffee liqueur and ad the bailey's for a sweeter mix and it is lovely. If you have no beans a pinch of ground coffee is great !
I would say that my only gripe with this variation is the sweetness. I used Kulua, my coffee liqueur of choice, and I felt that the additional sweetness from the sugar syrup was unnecessary. The drink was lovely, smooth and I was pleased to get a great foam from rather rigorous shaking, buuuut it was just a little too sweet. So for those who don't have a sweet tooth, follow the instructions minus the syrup and you're on for one lovely, classy cocktail that'll wake you up in the morning (if that's when you start drinking).
When we were in Lucca we had a really nice espresso drink called The Bomb with espresso, sassolino (sp?), and white rum, with a little bit of sugar. It was a hot drink and oh my was it good. :) This one looks amazing too. I love coffee drinks.

My vodka drinking has been minimal, but given that my coffee drinking has been, well, maximal, I'll try this ASAP. Maybe with no syrup, the bitter taste is the whole point of coffee for me. Also, not sure if I would call it a martini though; but hey, I'm the newbie here. If I had to name it something jazzy, I'd give a nod to all the amazing Latin American coffee out there and call it "From Havana to Moscow". It's time someone acknowledges the cultural relics of the old communist block!

Make it without the sugar syrup, I find Kahlua to bring a lot of sweetness to the drink anyways! There are variations of this recipe using Creme De Cassis (white), but this is the original!

A Black Russian just uses coffee flavoured liqueur, whereas an Espresso Martini actually has a shot of real coffee in it. Plus a Black Russian is served on the rocks.

As a University student, this seems to be the sophisticated alternative to Vodka+Red Bull.. It's got caffeine and it's got Vodka. Time to pretend I'm sophisticated!
This whole class of drinks is not properly named imo. The name Martini has nothing to do with the brand; it's a stirred cocktail with gin, vermouth and orange bitters. But if you deviate from the formular and are going to make a black russian with coffee, go ahead. Because i do believe that this is quite tasty (although i would prefer it stirred i think).
I've been drinking a hot version of this for years. One day I ran out of milk for a White Russian. Made a coffee by mistake (not instant) and noticed my Black Caucasian on the side so just chucked it in. Voila. And as for my hot buttered rum, I drink that by the pint. A la North West Passage. A good knob of butter, Muscavado sugar, 1/2 pint hot water to melt the butter and sugar and top up with dark rum. It'll put hairs on your chest.
He knows how to sell it, but it looks way too diluted for my taste, plus I wouldn't use any sugar (unless coffee is very bitter) and I would use equal parts of vodka and coffee liquor. But that's just my preference :)
